• Experience comes not only from internshipsand jobs but from campus acvies, classprojects and volunteer work as well. There isvalue – what employers call transferable skills –in all you do as a student.

• Readers only know what you tell them. Includeconcise yet thoroughly detailed aconstatements to pique a reader’s interest.

• Demonstrate skills through your bullet pointsin addion to lisng them in a “Skills” secon.

• Think ahead to the interview. Make sure thecontent you’d talk about is well-represented inyour resume.

Your resume’s job is to get you an interview.

• Consider the context for which you’re usingyour resume and adjust content, headers anddetails to match the specific job/internshipposng, scholarship applicaon, career fair/Meetup or other opportunity.

• Note differences in style, tone, keywords andcontent across industries and around theglobe.

• Disnguish yourself from other students bydetailing your individual role and uniqueimpact, especially when several students mayhave the same experience (for ex: club officeror honors program student).

• Do not include personal informaon like age,Social Security number, marital status, religionor parents’ occupaons.

• Do you need a CV or resume? In the U.S., a CVis used primarily for admission to – or roles in –academia. It is a type of resume with anin-depth focus on research, presentaons, academic awards, and/or publicaons.

The document should be written with the reader in mind.

• Use bullet points instead of paragraphs.Avoid pronouns (I, we) and minimize the useof arcles (a, an, the).

• Use CAPS, bold fonts, and line spacing todisnguish between secons.

• Keep document to one page. Set the marginsbetween 0.75” and 1” (ideal) and no lessthan 0.5”.

• Use consistent font styles and sizes (10-12pt)throughout the document.

• Save space by leaving off your mailingaddress. Your phone number and emailsuffice. Include your LinkedIn profile link.

• List content in reverse chronological order ineach secon of your resume.

Your resume should be easy to scan and digest in 15-30 seconds.

Crafting Your Descriptions

Step 1: Identify your transferable skills Place a check mark next to each skill you possess. Think about all sengs in which you may have used/developed

each skill, for example: in a work experience, during an internship, while working on a class/group project, as a member of a club. Then, circle the ones you consider to be your top 10.

Students oen lament a perceived lack of experience, struggle to make connecons between their experiences and what is required in a job descripon or worry about how experiences in one realm (e.g., independent research) translate into another (e.g., an industry internship). To allay those fears, use this three-step worksheet to (1) idenfy your transferable skills or the skills listed in a specific job descripon (2) note where those skills were learned/developed, and (3) turn these general concepts into acon statements.

Page 5: resume thinbg [Recovered] · • Set an appointment with a career counselor to review your resume. Contact careercenter@norwalk.edu As long as you are aspiring to professional advancement,

Step 2: Brainstorm examples of how you used each skill

List your top 10 skills in the far-le column, then note the place(s) where you demonstrated each skill. Do not sweat the details here, you’ll get to that in Step 3. Although the example below illustrates a skill in use across all three categories, some of your specific skills may have only be used on one or two.

Step 3: Bring it all together with an accomplishment statement Turn these general concepts into bullet points on your resume. You can ACE this part of

resume-wring by starng with an Acon Verb to show you did something, providing the Context for that acon using quantave and qualitave terms and then demonstrang the End Result of your acons to show the value of your contribuons.
