IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR – when retail store planners, visual merchandisers and designers flock to New York to experience the city at its most magical time. The windows. The retail. The restaurants. The glow. The A.R.E. Retail Design Collective. There’s nothing like it!

A.R.E. would like to welcome you to this thrilling city for this exciting event. We encourage you to use this guide to help make the most of your Collective experience and your visit to the city. Here’s just some of what you will find this year:

• NEW — This year we’ve teamed up with our partner, WindowsWear, to offer a special holiday windows tour, exclusive to our attendees. Don’t miss this great opportunity – space is limited (details on p. 9).

• NEW — We’ve moved to the Metropolitan Pavilion, an exciting new space with a concentration of more than 15 pop-up showrooms and conference sponsors conveniently displaying on two floors and within walking distance to many of the other participating showrooms. (See a complete list of showrooms and sponsors on p.12.)

• Expect to be wowed by three great presentations from experts inside and outside the retail business (see p. 6).

• Networking events throughout the event, including showroom- sponsored gatherings as well as the not-to-miss party of the year, the PAVE Gala.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU! Stop by our event headquarters at the Metropolitan Pavilion to register, pick up your wristband, and grab a showroom map. Then take advan-tage of the presentations, showroom displays, and city sights to gather fresh ideas to launch your 2015 plans.

WELCOME

If you’ve never been to the A.R.E. Retail Design Collective before and are unfamiliar with New York, here’s an itinerary that may help you better navigate the show.

tuesday | dec. 2Arrive in New York City and get yourself acclimated – don’t forget to stop and take in all of the fabulous retail windows this city is known for. Consider taking a WindowsWear Fashion Window Walking Tour in the afternoon, but make sure to book ahead, space is limited (see p. 9). At 5 p.m. design:retail’s CitySCENE New York begins (see www.designretailonline.com/cityscenenyc for details).

wednesday | dec. 3Attend the morning presentation (continental breakfast included) and gain a fresh perspective on British retail. After, stick around the Metro politan Pavilion and check out all the pop-up showrooms and conference sponsors on both the 2nd and 5th floors. Join us in the Hospitality Lounge on the 5th floor at 2:30 p.m. for High Tea (and coffee)! Then, if there’s still time, start venturing out into the city – with more than 20 showrooms throughout Man-hattan, you’ll need more than one afternoon and you don’t want to miss any! At 6:30 p.m. the PAVE Gala kicks off at the Cipriani on Wall Street.

thursday | dec. 4Attend the morning presentation (continental breakfast included) and see what’s trending in retail design. Circle back to any pop-up showrooms you may have missed at the Metropolitan Pavilion and then hit the city for more showrooms. At 3:00 p.m. the free WindowsWear Walking Tour meets at Herald Square (limited to the first 50 registrants). This evening, visit showroom parties throughout the city (by invite only).

friday | dec. 5Get to the Metropolitan Pavilion by 8:30 a.m. for a sit-down breakfast (included with the presentation ticket) and then go on a visual tour of window displays from around the world. This afternoon, take a WindowsWear walking tour, catch up on showrooms you want to revisit or ones you may have missed, and don’t forget to explore the great retail throughout the city.

anytime during the showNeed a break from exploring the city? Make sure to check out the Hospitality Lounge on the 5th floor of the Metropolitan Pavilion – a place where you can sit down, grab a coffee, recharge, and connect with fellow attendees.

See p. 6 for daily presentation details. See p. 9 for WindowsWear Walking Tour details.

MORE THAN 800 retail luminaries will gather to celebrate the next generation of retail designers at the Planning and Visual Education

Partnership (PAVE) Gala. This celebratory industry-networking event includes cocktails, dinner, music, and awards. Now in its 18th year, the Gala is a major fundraiser for the non-profit educational foundation, which in 2014 awarded over $75,000 to support retail design students and schools.

During the Gala, the winners of PAVE’s 2014 Student Design Competition, sponsored by REI, will be recognized. PAVE will also present the 2014 Rising Star Award to acknowledge young visual and retail design profes-sionals in the retail environments industry. The event will distinguish the best in New York City retail design and visual merchandising as VMSD presents awards for Excellence in New York Visual Merchandising and Design, and design:retail presents the Winning Windows Awards honoring top holiday windows in NYC.

To see if tables or seats are available, visit www.paveinfo.org. Even if you are not attending, you can support PAVE through donations, scholarships, internships, sponsorships, and other programs; more information online at www.paveinfo.org.

GETTING AROUNDIf you’re unfamiliar with New York and its various neighbor hoods, here are some helpful apps to assist you in navigating the city.

We’ve also compiled a map of all participating showrooms to guide you. Download a digital version of it from www.retaildesigncollective.com or pick up a copy at the Retail Design Collective registration on the 2nd floor of the Metropolitan Pavilion (123 W. 18th St.).

APPSMaking your way through the streets of New York has never been easier thanks to navigational apps for smartphones and tablets. They provide detailed street and subway maps, transit information, the best corners for hailing a taxi and more. Here are a few that you may find useful; a more comprehensive list is available online from NYC the Official Guide, located here: www.nycgo.com/articles/best-nyc-smartphone-apps#Navigation

Embark NYC (letsembark.com): This free app promises to make mass transit simple. Users are able to plan trips, get alerts and trip times, and it will still work underground without an internet or cellular connection.

HopStop (www.hopstop.com): Find your way around the city using HopStop for directions, transit maps, schedules, and alerts. This app also provides a city guide to restaurants, bars and clubs.

Hailing a Cab? Go to www.nyc.gov/tlc, the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission’s website, for passenger information, rates, lost and found and more.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is also a useful resource for Subway maps, bus routes, schedules, service updates, and more. Go to onthego.mta.info from your mobile device and get all of their tools on the go.

In this post-9/11 era, airports have become synonymous with long lines, heightened security, and stress-inducing delays. But behind that dark cloud is a silver lining: A new approach to the design of terminals and the retail within them. The fresh takes can give retailers increased revenues and improve the experience for travelers.

The airport retail market is robust, with a large number of consumers within high-traffic spaces, thanks in part to a marked increase in air travel. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the number of passengers carried by U.S. airlines will jump to 1.15 billion by the year 2034—a 404.5 million increase over 2013 passenger levels (745.5 million).

Design and retail professionals agree that the market is ripe for growth and expansion as airports look to rebrand themselves and improve experiences across the board for their customers.“This is an extremely exciting time for air travel and airports,” says Justin Blatstein, director of aura at New York-based OTG Management, an operator of more than

A.R.E. IS PROUD to administer the Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE), which is the educational foundation for the retail environments industry.

PAVE’s mission is to connect students, educators, and professionals who support the retail industry in a vibrant, meaningful, and mentoring format. PAVE aims to:

• provide students with financial support and industry exposure

• connect educators and industry professionals–enriching curricula and encouraging industry dialogue

• provide retail industry businesses with new, qualified talent and encourage reciprocal investment in PAVE

• ensure the future viability of the retail industry by investing in the next generation of leaders.

PAVE provides a pathway to the real world of retail design. With seminars, workshops, and contests, students are exposed to design challenges similar to what they would face in their work lives. Students are able to respond to design objectives, constraints, and functionality in a way that moves them from “academic” to “experienced.”

During 2014, PAVE awarded over $75,000 to students and educational institutions.

Winners of the PAVE Student Design Competition and the Rising Star recipients will be recognized the first evening of the Retail Design Collective at the PAVE Annual Gala at the Cipriani Wall Street.

For more details about how you can get involved in PAVE, visit paveinfo.org
