A lifetime of working compels many people to look forward to their retirement. Some people even work to retire early. But what are the ad-vantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any downsides to this plan?

A 2014 survey by the financial ser-vices provider TIAA-CREF found that 37 percent of Americans plan to retire before age 65. However, many of them will not have control over the matter. Those who do may want to consider the pros and cons of early retirement.

Pros and cons toearly retirement

SOCIAL MEDIA TEXT: Some people even work to retire early. But what are the advantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any detriments to this plan?

ADVANTAGESMany people seek early retirement

so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retire-ment, time becomes, more or less, a retiree's own.

Leaving a job can be a boon to a person's health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping.

The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early re-tirement also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers.

DISADVANTAGESOne of the disadvantages of early

retirement is a loss of income. Contribu-tions to retirement accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate savings were not al-located for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings.

While retiring early may be good for health, it also can have negative conse-quences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications.

Another consideration is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare, such as Medi-care in the United States, at age 65.

Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

It's never too early to begin saving for retirement. While millions of people have no doubt heard or read those very words before, surveys indicate that few people are taking that lesson to heart.

A 2018 survey from Bankrate.com found that 20 percent of Americans don't save any of their annual income. Things aren't necessarily rosier in Cana-da, where the financial institution CIBC reports that 32 percent of people on the cusp of retiring have nothing saved for retirement. Saving for retirement can seem impossible in households where every dollar counts. But the following are four simple ways to save more for retirement without making dramatic lifestyle changes.

1. TURN RAISES INTO RETIREMENT SAVINGS.

According to the WorldatWork 2018-2019 Salary Budget Survey: Top Level Results, salary budgets in the United States are projected to rise by an average of 3.2 percent in 2019, while those in Canada are expected to rise by 3 percent. Working professionals can save more

for retirement by converting some or all their raises into retirement savings. Pre-tax retirement accounts allow working professionals to put aside money before taxes are paid, so weekly paychecks will not be greatly affected if you choose to increase the percentage of your income you deposit into such accounts. Do this each time you receive a raise and your re-tirement savings will grow considerably.

2. PUT BONUSES TO WORK.Professionals who receive bonuses

can speak to their employer and request that their retirement contribution rates be increased when bonuses are issued. Many 401(k) retirement plans allow workers to contribute as much as 80 percent of their paychecks. While that's not sustainable for most people every pay period, increasing your contribution rate dramatically when your bonus is issued is a great way to save more for retirement. Contribution rates can then be returned to normal the following pay period.

3. DOWNSIZE YOUR HOME.Empty nesters nearing retirement

age may benefit by downsizing their homes. Doing so can reduce utility bills, property taxes and other ex-penses, and those savings can then be redirected into retirement accounts.

4. REINVEST TAX RETURNS. Working professionals accustomed to

receiving tax returns can use that money to catch up on their retirement savings. Rather than spending tax returns or depositing them into traditional savings accounts, reinvest them into a retirement account. Speak with a financial planner to help you figure out how to accomplish this goal. Even if it requires opening a new account, the long-term benefits or reinvesting returns are substantial.

Saving for retirement is important, and it's never too late or too early to start setting aside more money for your golden years.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. Retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for re-tirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of hav-ing more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires.

Crossword puzzles are an integral component of newspapers. In addi-tion to their entertainment quality, crossword puzzles can help improve cognition and brain health in individu-als of all ages.

The first known crossword puzzle to be published was created by a British journalist named Arthur Wynne, who is often credited as the inventor of crosswords. The first puzzle appeared in the New York World on December 21, 1913. The original crossword was diamond-shaped and did not feature the familiar black squares.

Throughout the 1920s, crossword puzzles became a standard offering in many newspapers. During this period, puzzle shapes evolved to the more familiar form, and certain puzzle standards were established. Puzzles now appearing in most North American newspapers and magazines feature solid areas of white squares. Each letter is usually part of both an "across" word and a "down" word, and usually each answer must contain at least three letters. In these puzzles, shaded squares are typically limited to about one-sixth of the total.

It is estimated that approximately 50 million people in America routinely par-take in crossword puzzles. Each year, one best-of-the-best is crowned in the Ameri-can Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

Everyone wants to improve his or her crossword-puzzling skills. These tips can help.

• Practice — a lot. Practice makes perfect, even with crossword puz-zles. Start with simple puzzles and work up to the more difficult ones.• Divide and conquer. Divide the puzzle into smaller sections and complete each cluster before mov-ing on. It's easier than completing all of the across or down clues.• Watch "Jeopardy." Puzzles used to be comprised largely of defini-tions, but they now incorporate just about every subject. Improving general knowledge and perhaps watching trivia shows can help with puzzle completion.• Learn repeat offenders. Over time you may recognize certain words appear in puzzle after puzzle. You'll soon be able to match the clues to these repeat words.• Familiarize yourself with mul-tiple word meanings. Remember to think like a puzzle creator, who is probably trying to stump you. The word "flower" may not imply the blooming plant. It may represent something that "flows." • Take a break. Taking a few mo-ments to step away from the puzzle before returning to it can clear the mind and make answers more ap-parent.

Crossword puzzles are a popular component of daily and weekly newspapers. They're fun to fill out and boast a rich history.

The Active Life at 90 and counting

By Jennifer KreftMarcia Spaly is an active 90-year-

old, who wants to keep it that way. That’s why, when she fell and broke her arm on a trip to Mackinac Island, she went to Hurley Medical Center for the Fast Track Emergency Depart-ment experience for patients 65 and older. Her daughter-in-law Connie Spaly had heard about the service through a friend, so when the urgent care they tried first sent them to the ER, they chose Hurley.

“We usually use a different hospital,” Connie said. “But we thought we’d just put (the program) to the test.”

Marcia certainly didn’t want to sit all night in an ER, having already endured a 3½-hour bus ride home from Mackinac with her tour group. She had avoided most of her pain by holding her arm still and was relieved to be in the ideal place for getting help. From the moment she arrived, Mar-cia was impressed with how quickly things moved along.

Marcia Spaly received treatment for her broken arm at Hurley Medical Center for the Fast Track Emergency Department. “I’ve never been to Hurley before and I had a very good experience,” she said. Photo: DOUG PIKE

“She (the front desk nurse) took my name and whisked me in back and started taking care of me,” Mar-cia said.

Then Dr. Weber came in and treated her with thoroughness and respect. “He was nice, down to earth. He didn’t act like a doctor,” Marcia laughed. She appreciated that he never talked down to her, and her family members liked that they were included in the exam.

“He had her best interests at heart at all times,” Connie said. “The fact they put her in a cast that she could still move with was wonderful. They understood she didn’t want to be slowed down.”

Now Marcia can get back to all those activities that make her life so active and fulfilling—her breakfast club, her luncheon club and the Red Hat Society, which is a social group for women age 50 and up. She is not a woman who likes being cooped up in the house. In fact, the first question

she asked the doctor was, “When can I drive again?”

“I try not to let age slow me down. I feel so good,” Marcia said. “I’ve never been to Hurley before and I had a very good experience. I don’t know if I’ve gotten any better treatment of any kind.”

Hurley Medical Center is the area’s only Senior Center of Excel-lence. In addition to the Fast Track rooming policy for patients 65 and older in the ER, their services include a team of geriatric nurse

specialists who follow older patients from admission to discharge to ad-dress age-specific needs, a virtual geriatric fracture center and a bone health program. Hurley is also one of only five hospitals in the state with NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) Exemplar status, a geriatric nursing distinc-tion indicating their commitment to excellence in the care of patients 65 and older. For more information on the special services Hurley offers senior patients, visit hurleymc.com.

The benefits of having

hobbiesDo you knit? Bake? Do pottery?

These hobbies are not just fun to do, but research is finding that they are also good for your well being. Picking up a hobby can help you live a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Did you know that your hobby could be helping your health? Re-searchers are finding that people who are active with hobbies tend to be healthier. Getting into physical hob-bies promote good health. It burns the fat stored in your body and helps reduce the cholesterol levels. It also promotes better blood circulation which is good for the heart. It tones your muscles. These hobbies not only benefit the body, but also help in mak-ing your mind more alert and sharp.

Hobbies are a great de-stresser. Research has revealed that people who partake in hobbies use them to reduce the stress levels in their bodies. Science is finding that the hobby diverts the focus of attention away from the problem causing the stress and places it on the hobby. The researchers found that people who engaged in leisure activities were 34 percent less stressed and 18 percent less sad during the activities.

Hobbies are a great way of meet-ing new people especially if you enjoy social hobbies like dancing or sports. Even hobbies that tend to be more one-person hobbies can become a social setting. With the internet and social media, it is easier to meet like minded indi-viduals. More interaction is great for the spirit and the body.

Researchers are studying the ef-fects of hobbies on the mind and self esteem. Exercising your mind can help you improve your mem-ory and increase problem solving abilities. Studies are being done to determine if hobbies can slow down mental aging and dementia as well. With hobbies, science has found that self-esteem is raised by the learning of something new. A hobby can give you an opportu-nity to focus on something to help

improve yourself. Plus hobbies can create new goals and new accom-plishments to be proud of.

New t-coil system installed at St. John’s in Fenton to help parishioners with hearing loss By Sally Rummel Sheila Churchill, a pa-rishioner at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Fenton, wasn’t able to hear Mass very well, even with two hear-ing aids. She wasn’t the only one. Many sen-ior members at St. John’s were having the same problem, until parish-ioner Marie Druick brought the issue to the parish council. “I’d estimate that about 35 to 40 percent of our parishioners have some

kind of hearing issues,” said Shauna Meyers, operations manager at St. John’s.

A new t-coil “hearing loop” system was installed Sept. 4 2018,

after Labor Day weekend, bringing the sounds of

worship more clearly to Churchill and oth-er parishioners who suffer from some degree of hearing loss.

This t-coil system works through the

You’ve been smoking for how many years?By Sally Rummel

If you’re a senior who’s still smoking, you already know you should quit. Smoking cigarettes causes almost one third (32 percent) of all cancer deaths in the U.S.

Lung cancer is the most well known cancer caused by smoking but others include cancer of the liver, colon, rectum, lung, oral cavity and throat, esophagus, larynx, stomach, pancreas, bladder, kidney, cervix and acute myeloid leukemia.

The good news for our national health is that fewer people in the 65+ age group smoke than any other age group. Senior

smokers account for nine out of every 100 adults, or 8.8 percent of the population, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The benefits to quitting are almost immediate. Ex-smokers have fewer illnesses such as colds and the flu, lower rates of bronchitis and pneumonia and feel healthier than people who still smoke.

Just 20 minutes after quitting:• Your heart and blood pressure will drop.

Just 12 hours after quitting:• The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

SOUNDSContinued from Page 7system works directly through St. John’s audio system, it’s very clear, like you’re connected directly to the micro-phone,” Meyers said. “It completely

eliminates all the background noise.” If you were to walk into the sanctuary at St. John’s, you’d notice the copper wire around the pews. “It almost looks like copper ribbon,” Meyers said. Churchill was so pleased with the

results that she spoke at all of St. John’s Masses after the t-coil installation, en-couraging people to visit their hearing specialist to make sure their device was compatible with this new system. “People are very happy with this new

system,” Meyers said. “We’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from the people. We invited anyone to come in and test it and hear it.” This t-coil system was funded partly by the Knights of Columbus and also the St. John’s parish, Meyers said.

• Your breath smells better, food tastes better and everyday activities like climbing stairs might no longer leave you out of breath.

In as little as two weeks:• Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

Being older creates both challenges and advantages when it comes to quitting this habit.

The challenges:• You’ve likely tried quitting before, so you can easily feel discouraged about trying to quit again.• If you’ve been smoking for a long time,

smoking has become such a daily part of your life that it’s hard to imagine quitting.

The advantages:• Older people have strengths that can help them quit. Over their lifetimes, they’ve had lots of experience accomplishing difficult tasks.• They are likely to be better prepared to quit than when they were younger. They know quitting is tough and that it won’t be easy, so once they decide to try again, they may be more willing to work at it to make sure they succeed.

Here’s how to be successful with quitting your smoking habit:• Make a firm decision to quit and pick

and definite date to stop.• Make a clear plan for how you

will stick to your new smoke-free lifestyle.

• Talk with your doctor.• Read self-help information.• Go to individual or group counseling.• Try online mobile tools from 60plus.

smokefree.gov.• Take medicine to help with

symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.• Let your friends know you’re quitting

so they can offer their help and support.

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That's perfectly understandable, because life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents.

Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones. But life insurance is a purchase unlike any other, and people may be confused or intimidated when attempting to purchase life insurance policies.

Deciding if you need coverage

While life insur-ance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that's not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

Buying life insuranceMuch like various other types of

insurance, life insurance can be pur-chased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company's website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, because no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from vari-

ous providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

Choosing coverageWhen choosing coverage, you will

no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only

want life insurance until they retire or until their chil-

dren reach adulthood. Permanent insur-

ance is more expen-sive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many peo-

ple choose perma-nent life insurance

policies so the money their beneficiaries receive

upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to perma-nent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it's easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. How-ever, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income re-placement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the fam-ily's day-to-day cost of living expenses.

Life insurance merits serious con-sideration, and adults should do their homework and fully understand a policy before signing any contracts.

Life is full of the unexpected. But just because the future is unpredict-able does not mean adults cannot prepare for what lies ahead. Estate planning is important, and establish-ing power of attorney can be essential for men and women looking to protect their financial resources and other assets.

What is power of attorney?A power of attorney, or POA, is a

document that enables an individual to appoint a person or organization to manage his or her affairs should this individual become unable to do so. According to the National Caregivers Library, POA is granted to an "attorney-in-fact" or "agent" to give a person the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated "principal." The laws for creating a power of attorney vary depending on where a person lives, but there are some general similarities regardless of geography.

Why is po wer of a ttorney needed?

Many people believe their families will be able to step in if an event oc-curs that leaves them incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, this is not always true. If a person is not named as an agent or granted legal access to financial, medical and other pertinent information, family members' hands may be tied. In addition, the govern-ment may appoint someone to make certain decisions for an individual if no POA is named.

Just about everyone can benefit from establishing an attorney-in-fact. Doing so does not mean men and women cannot live independently, but it will remove the legal barriers involved should a person no longer be physically or mentally capable of managing certain tasks.

Power of attorney variesPower of attorney is a broad

term that covers various aspects of decision-making. According to the legal resource Lectric Law Library, the main types of POA include gen-eral power of attorney, health care power of attorney, durable power of attorney, and special power of at-torney. Many of the responsibilities overlap, but there are some subtle legal differences. Durable power of attorney, for example, relates to all the appointments involved in general, special and health care powers of at-torney being made "durable." This means the document will remain in effect or take effect if a person be-comes mentally incompetent. Certain powers of attorney may fall within a certain time period.

What is covered? An agent appointed through POA

may be able to handle the following, or more, depending on the verbiage of the document:• banking transactions• buying/selling property• settling claims• filing tax returns• managing government-supplied

benefits• maintaining business interests• making estate-planning decisions• deciding on medical treatments• selling personal property• fulfilling advanced health care

directivesAlthough a power of attorney docu-

ment can be filled out and an agent ap-pointed on one's own, working with an estate planning attorney to better understand the intricacies of this vital document is advised.
