Club Captain’s Report December 2013 Hi everyone,

It was great to see a many happy faces at the Trinity Grammar Fair, the weather was great and I must

say that fun was had by all. We met a couple of new members on the day which was great to see.

This month is the wind down to another fantastic year. We have two outings for you to choose from,

BMC Experience Grand Day Out which offer a great view of a wide range of classic car,

And/Or the MMCCV Christmas Party on the 12th

at Canterbury Masonic Centre.

Hope to see you there and don’t forget to bring a raffle prize to the Christmas party or give it to Barbara

I wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year.

Presidents Report December 2013

Hi All

We had two great runs last month, the first a fun day out at Wayne & Lyn’s place for Melbourne Cup.

Thanks to Wayne & Lyn for putting on such a great day (the desserts were superb) and I won a bit of

money. It was a good turnout for the second run to Trinity Grammar fair. I think we had one of each

type of Morris Minor on display. It also was the first showing of our new club banners (they look great).

Thanks to Barbara and Ken for hosting the morning tea at their place. (More in the Run Reports).

The Mornington Australia Day parade run is back on, as I have had a meeting with the council and we

have been able to come to an agreement on a suitable location for us to park after the parade. Details of

the run in Up Coming Events.

A.G.M is in February. All committee positions will be vacated. I therefore ask all club members to think

about coming on to the committee. The committee needs new members to rejuvenate itself to keep our

great club going.

Please remember that if your Morris Minor is on the Club Permit Scheme, you need to have your club

membership renewed by the 31st of December. If it is not done by that date, your car could be on the road

illegally.

I am looking forward to catching up with you all at the Christmas Party.

Keep On Morrying

Mark

Melbourne Cup Day at Wayne & Lyn’s in Ballarat

Attendees:- 21 members 4 visitors

Barbara & Ken Urquhart, John & Ann Druery, Mark & Sue Parritt, Graham & Lesley Dines, Neil &

Sue Cheney, Wayne Cunningham & Lyn Waites, , Bruce Kerr, Percy & Cheryl Scicluna, Joy & Jack

Vears, Tim Lengyel, Geoff & Bev O’Donnell, a new member Joy Wescombe. Visitors Michael Patmore &

Norma Addison (Ballarat Club) and Joan & Graham Bulluss.

12 members met at the BP Service Centre at Rockbank for the journey to Wayne & Lyn’s house in

Ballarat. New member, Joy Wescombe joined us for the journey.

On our arrival we were met by Wayne, Lyn, Graham & Lesley, Percy & Cheryl, Neil & Sue followed by

Bruce, Geoff & Bev, Michael, Norma, Graham & Joan.

Barbara

There were fascinating fascinators and top hats and some had none. I opted for the public car-park dress.

Most arrived at around 11.30 just in time for morning tea. There was plenty of food on the table with the

hostess telling me to take my contributions back home. Everyone was happy and in the cup spirit.

Coffee and wine flowed, more of the latter, as spirits reigned high.

Morning tea finished just as lunch was announced “the barbeque is ready so place your “chops”. Then as

if morning tea hadn’t happened, everyone sat down to feast again.

With the cup time advancing there was frenzied selling of places in the sweeps. Two dollar sweep, then

one dollar followed by another two dollar. Then we were summoned inside to watch the race of the big

screen. Sheep stations were at stake here so everyone watched the screen intently until Gai Waterhouse

jumped up shouting that her horse had won the cup.

Dividends were paid out and then it was afternoon tea. All sorts of sweet delights were on offer. My pick

was the finger lickin’ vanilla slice that Joy Wescombe offered. Pavlovas, cheesecakes and other delights.

I pulled in my tummy and tried a bit of each.

With all of that out of the way it was time for the Melbourne people to head home. Joy’s car didn’t want

to climb out of the court so back it came and Percy proceeded to check it out. Finally all headed off

toward the highway.

Bruce Kerr.

The journey home was filled with problems with Joy’s car, John Druery came to the rescue & drove her

car home , Joy hitching a ride with Ann. Here she learnt the joys of the two way radio communication!!!

All arrived home safely after a good Melbourne Cup Day. (ps Joy’s car is now fixed)

Trinity Grammar Founders’ Day Fair NOVEMBER 17TH

Attendees

Ken & Barbara Urquhart John & Ann Druery, Percy & Cheryl Scicluna, Graham & Lesley Dines,

Graham & Rosalee Harper, Mark Parritt, Tim Lengyel, Stewart Carr, Mal & Margaret Baker. A new

member Debbie Blair & her parents Ken & Nancy caught up with us for lunch.

We all met at Barbara & Ken’s house in Kew for a much appreciated morning tea, then off in convoy to

the Trinity Grammar 25th

fair.

We angled park on the road between some of the school buildings, the new tear drop signs were used for

the first time – they looked terrific.

The fair was of a very high standard, many stalls selling food, books plants clothing, craft treasures, an

animal farm, rides (some definitely for the young, the screams were heard far & wide.) etc. Music was

played most of the day featuring many bands from the school.

Plenty of shelter from the sun, actually a perfect day weather wise.

We managed to fill a large table for lunch many of us sampling the goods on offer. A relaxing afternoon

chatting before some of us returned to Second Ave for tea & more goodies to eat.

Trip to Halls Gap (Grampians) 5 C’s (by Big Ed)

Graham & Lesley met Graham & Rosalee at the BP Rockbank on Friday 29th

of November at 3pm for a

220kms drive to Halls Gap arriving at 5.30pm then checked into their cabins at the Lakeside Tourist

Park. That evening, they adjourned to the Halls Gap Hotel for dinner then back to their cabins for a

coffee and bed.

On Saturday, breakfast included feeding the cockatoos and parrots then after that they popped into the

town centre for supplies and a coffee then made their way up to the Boroka lookout for magnificent views

over Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield. On the way back to the tourist park, Michael & Veronica, Bruce &

Ann, Mark & Sue and Wayne & Lyn had arrived towing their caravans.

After camp was set up, we gathered under a tree for happy hour then later decided to take over the

communal BBQ and fireplace. After everyone had eaten, we were entertained with a sing-along with

“Mike & Gerry”. We decided to let the back packers go to sleep so we all headed off to our beds even

though some nearly fell over kangaroos on the way.

Page 13: RETURN ADDRESS: P.O. BOX 354 BALWYN, VIC. 3103 THE … · REGALIA: Graham Harper Email: regalia@morrisminorvic.org.au AH: 9439 5791 ... And/Or the MMCCV Christmas Party on the 12th

On Sunday, we gathered at 10am and drove to the Zumstein’s Historic Area for morning tea then off to

Mackenzie Falls. We walked to the lookout above the falls then went back to the car park for lunch. It

was good to sit and watch the kookaburras steal food from unknowing tourists who got the fright of their

lives.

After lunch, some who had to work the next day, headed back home while other adventurous ones

trekked to the bottom of the falls.

The remaining group then returned for another happy hour and BBQ. During the day, new members

Graham & Joan Bulluss arrived.

Monday was a day visiting the Historic Heatherlie Quarry where stone was cut for the building of

Parliament House and the Melbourne Town Hall as well as other major buildings.

In the afternoon, the remaining group drove to Lake Bellfield for swimming and canoeing then the

mandatory happy hour and BBQ.

Tuesday saw them venture off to the Sundial Carpark in the Grampians and a walk to Silverbank Falls.

The afternoon was a visit to the Brambuk Aboriginal Centre.

This event is still going when the “generator” went to print but most will be home by Saturday.

Those who attended were:- Graham & Rosalee Harper, Graham & Lesley Dines, Michael & Veronica

Dobson, Mark and Sue Parritt, Bruce Kerr & Ann Rasmussen, Wayne Cunningham & Lyn Waites,

Hi, my dad has a 1954 Morris Minor that he would like to sell. It is a two door, split front window, side

valve. The body is in good condition, and has been sanded and nearly ready for painting. Carburettor

needs to be set up, and has a re-conditioned motor. If you able to assist me in any way, would be greatly

appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Meeting Hazel

By Freddie Arp

In the July Club meet last year 2012 I went along because I had promised Percy that I would see him

there. I was rather tired and for a while contemplated ringing up Percy and apologizing. Percy had

kindly tested a clutch pressure plate for me to make sure it would work before undertaking doing the

clutch on my Morry. He rebuilt a gearbox for me prior to that and that was ready and waiting for the

job. In the meantime my Morry was being driven with a crunchy gearbox complete with a slipping

clutch. So, just as I stood up to leave our son Alexander asked. "Can I come?" I could do with the

company that night so I agreed.

At the meet everything went along as normal then about half way through a gentleman I had never seen

before stood up and introduced himself. His name is Alan Woollard. He then announced that he had a

1956 Morris Minor. He's the second owner - the original owner was a lady called Hazel who had the car

from new. Hazel loved her Morry. Alan had the car for eighteen years. In that time he stripped it down,

repaired, repainted and generally had fun with it, going on many drives around the countryside in

Queensland (and often taking Hazel for a ride in it, which she enjoyed immensely).

Barbra had some pictures of it up on the wall for everyone to see. Alan then continued by saying that "I

do not want to sell it. I just want to give it away to a young club member that would look after it." At this

point there were a few people looking around to see who would claim the car. A few nods of approval

came from the guys running the meet towards Alexander, and then Alexander naturally put his hand up.

Alan accepted. There was a question if anyone wanted to contest it, but that was met with silence.

Alexander, stunned and overwhelmed by this amazing generosity, became even more so when he was

taken outside to see the car. A beautiful blue four door Morris Minor stood there in all its glory. Her

name is Hazel. Still stunned, Alexander was taken out for a drive in his new classic car. Later on, when

Alan officially handed over the Morry to Alexander, he shook Alexander’s hand and said he could feel

him shaking. Alan assured him, saying “it is true, things like this can happen”. Alan has advised us that

Page 16: RETURN ADDRESS: P.O. BOX 354 BALWYN, VIC. 3103 THE … · REGALIA: Graham Harper Email: regalia@morrisminorvic.org.au AH: 9439 5791 ... And/Or the MMCCV Christmas Party on the 12th

he is very happy with the outcome and feels that what he set out to achieve has been accomplished.

Hazel had a noise in first gear. I was then compelled to explain how I had ended up with a rebuilt

gearbox from Percy. Replacing the gearbox in Hazel was quite interesting. Alexander and his younger

brother William have always helped with work on the cars when they can. This time there was a genuine

very keen helper out of Alexander. Alexander is left handed and he has the tendency to cross thread

things. This was rather annoying as he has cross threaded a couple of filler plugs on my Morris Minor.

He never did that once on his own car. How curious? Later on Alexander would cheekily say something

to likes that his Morris Minor is better than mine. This of course would have been laughable except he

was right. It was time to ask Percy if he could rebuild another gearbox for me.

Alexander is currently learning to drive and because we have fully registered cars for him to learn in

there was not really any pressure to get Hazel registered straight away. However he recently turned

eighteen and one of the things I promised him for his birthday was that I would put his car on the road.

Naturally he held me to it. Hazel was road worthy checked at Morris Garage in Bayswater. As the

gearbox and clutch was replaced, the rest of the car looked sound as I had replaced whatever I thought

might be a road worthy issue. The road worthy check showed Hazel needed new rubber boots on the

steering rack, new bushes in the rear spring shackles and the fuel pump relocated back next to the

battery. The electric fuel pump was mounted under the back seat and Richard Milligan who did the

check was not keen on having fuel running through the passenger cabin. A couple of weekends later, all

the road worthy work was done and Hazel got her road worthy certificate.

Hazel is now registered with club permit and Alexander has already had a few of his driving lessons with

her. He absolutely loves it!! He is looking forward to taking Hazel on a club run when he gets his license.

I would like to thank Alan Woollard and his lovely wife Lyn for their most generous gift, Percy for his

help and expertise, Richard from Morris Garages for his help with the road worthy and the Morris

Minor Car Club of Victoria for making all this possible. Freddie.

Cooling problems From technical advisor ROB THOMASSON (Extract from Minor Matters)

I've had one or two cooling

problems this summer and I

did all the usual checks. I back-flushed

the radiator and even made the modified fan

bigger. I removed the thermostat as a

trial, as although memory told me I had

changed this, I couldn't remember when.

The first clue to the real problem was when

I took the thermostat housing off. Although

there was water in the header tank, the

engine block was only partly full. It was when

I came to refit the housing that I realised it

was not going the be a quick fix.

Unlike the Minor, the Metro system I'd

fitted has a header tank with an air bleed

pipe to allow any trapped air to get out. The

little pipe had snapped off the thermostat

housing leaving me with a problem, as

getting a new one would not be easy.

So out with the Lumiweld. It made a good

job of attaching a piece of aluminium bar,

which I then drilled out to make a tube as all the tube I could get was too thin-walled.

It was as I was refitting it that the penny dropped. If the pipe was that corroded, the inner part was likely

to be solid with muck. As a result the air could not get out of the top of the engine, and hence the poor old

Minor was running rather hot to say the least as the top part of the head only had air in it.

It is a tribute to the engine design that it could tolerate this without melting. Oh and way has the van has a

Metro cooling system? Well I’d fitted a Ford 5 speed box to cope with the 1275 engine, and to get the

gear stick where I wanted it I moved the engine forward. This meant I needed a thinner radiator and the

Metro fitted. All the ancillaries I needed for the engine build came from a scrapped Metro, including the

radiator. Compared with the pictures I’ve seen of a steam powered Minor complete with a flash steam

boiler on the back of the Pick-up, these modifications were a mere trifle.

aluminium piping I made to repair the connection to the thermostat housing.
