I the New Order o the Ages is to be established during thepresent cycle, the minds o those who are to become membersor citizens o that new order must be enlightened and awakenedto the grave allacies that have held men enslaved throughout

the ages.Te tentacles that bind man today are stronger and more

inexible than ever beore. Mans intellectual advancementand inventive achievements in many elds, though admittedlynoteworthy, have by their very reactions bound him moresecurely than at any time during recorded history.

Te greatest and most ar-reaching o these allacies is theuniversally accepted idea that man must choose between twoall- important achievements. Man may, by his eorts andapplication, succeed and reach great heights in a material sense.

Tis success includes possessions, high position, worldly honorsand everything that is usually considered desirable in lie. oachieve this success he must devote all o his time to reaching theset goal, to the neglect o his Spiritual nature.

In reverse, his conception o what lie should be and theattainment to be achieved, may lead him into Spiritual activities. Here he may believe it necessary to devote his every eort to theawakening o the Soul that God breathed into his nostrils asbirth, and bring that Soul, by means o a Spiritual or secondBirth, into Consciousness.

He is told that to attain to this degree o development hemust transmute his gross sel into a temple wherein God maydwell while he, as a result o his desires, eorts and experiences, changes or transorms the son o man into (like unto) the Sono God. In accomplishing this, he erroneously believes that he

must ree his mind rom everything that has to do with earthlywell-being, possessions, honors or high position.

Tese erroneous ideas have governed men and their activitiesthroughout the ages, despite the positive command:

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars, and to Godthe things that are Gods. - Mark 12:17

Tis is a clear, simple and positive statement that man owes asmuch to himsel as he does to God. He must devote as muchtime to his material sel and its responsibilities, as to his Spiritualsel. Te present text is devoted to making this plain. It explainsthe Way, the ruth, and the Lie, so that all who will shall beable to walk in the way o the Lord, or the Law. In doing so,man receives all o the benets, material and Spiritual, o theReaction o the Law.

Tis is the Law o Justice, the Law o Balance, the Law oEquilibrium; the Law that supports heaven and earth. I the Lawis obeyed, it will help man rst o all to become a Man, andthen, according to Gods own promise, a god, or like unto theSons o God.

Men throughout the ages have listened to the expounding othe Law; but have obeyed the desires o the esh. Tey have hadan occasional clear vision o the kingdom or Spiritual reality, but the esh was too strong to permit them to seek the kingdomand have all other things added thereto ...and why? Because

they had been led to believe, did believe, that they could notunction on both the material and Spiritual plane at one and thesame time.

Tey believed that i they ate o the ruits o the tree oknowledge, they could not also eat o the ree o Lie. Terein

has been the allacy. Te desires o the resh being too strong tobe denied, even though submission meant Spiritual death.

Te satisaction o these material desires promised immediatepleasures, or what were considered as benets, while those o

the Spirit were to materialize some time in the uture, like thepromise o the return o the bread cast upon the waters. Menclosed their eyes to the promised benets o the uture, thoughknowing them to be the only realities, and accepted those o theimmediate present.

Te Science, Philosophy, Religion (Spiritual concepts) o thepresent text - it is all o these - are based on the most Anciento teachings, the Wisdom o the Ancient Priesthood and theinculcations and promises o the Nazarene, who made the mostpositive statement that man, i he would obey the Law, could

have all that the material and Spiritual had to oer. Here is hispromise:

But seek ye rst the kingdom o God, and His righteousness;and all these things shall be added unto you. - Matthew 6:33.

Interpreted in simple, every-day language, this tells man that ihe desires to obtain or himsel everything that is most desirable, most lasting, most certain to bring health, strength, peace andpossessions, he must seek to understand the Laws o God, i.e.,do that which is Right. He must Obey Te Operating, ReactingLaw. As a result o this obedience in the spirit o willingness, all

things worth while and to his benet will be drawn to, or accrueto him.

Te Law itsel is simple as illustrated by an every-day, commonexample: Suppose a business man is in need o money to carryon his business or increase it. When applying to his bank or a

loan, HE MUS COMPLY WIH HE LAW, the rules andregulations governing such loans, and he will obtain it.

Strangely enough, man never questions the justice o theserules and regulations. Yet he ignores or evades Laws no less

denite which, observed and ollowed, would bring him argreater and more lasting benets.

Te basic allacy o mankind, except or a very ew, has beenthe conviction that success is concerned only with achievementson the material plane. Tis suggests, inclusively and exclusively, prosperity in business; success in a chosen proession, a specialline o endeavor - perhaps in the arts or music, or socialachievement. Unortunately, the term success has seldom beenassociated with Spiritual attainment. Just as unortunately, andquite as erroneously, it has been taken or granted that success,

as commonly understood, also brings peace and happiness tothe successul person. Te reverse is generally true.A man may be ever so successul in a worldly sense, be the

owner o houses, lands, jewels; be highly honored - a sociallion -posses great authority, lord over all he surveys, yetbe ill at ease, lacking peace o mind, burdened with a guiltyconscience, depleted in health and generally distressed. Despitehis possessions, his position in high places, such a man may bein truth, the most miserable o ailures. Any real success mustinclude peace o mind as a rst essential.

Tere must be a clear vision beyond the immediate present;a happy amily lie, the assurance o real (dependable) riends, and the ultimate goal beyond the immediate present lie. Tis isthe balanced, complete and satisying success which the Science,Philosophy and Religious concepts o the New Order o the

Ages must teach mankind.o attain prosperity in business aairs, prominence in social

lie, in the proessions or in the arts, holding high position, wielding power among men, at the expense o health or peace o

mind, is to all ar short o success. Such a success is certainly notto be sought by the wise man o the present age.

o be ound wanting in the vision o that which is greater.more lasting and more constantly satisying than anythingobtainable in the business, social and proessional world, isactually to be a ailure. Unquestionably, the Master-eacher, theNazarene, at the beginning o the past age, had this in mindwhen he propounded the question:

For what shall it prot a man, i he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own Soul? - Mark 8:36

Tis question proposed or discussion some nineteen hundredyears ago, has been almost completely ignored with the inevitableand unmistakable results: while there are a ew great successesin the material world, there is more enmity, maliciousness, dishonorableness, degeneration, lack o law and order, moremisery and sorrow, than could conceivably have existed at thetime this question was asked.

As this was oreseen, the prophecy was made that there was tobe a time, a New Order o the Ages, in which many would beginto see the wisdom o gaining knowledge o the Divine Laws,

and ollowing the revealed concepts o the Laws governing two-old success (material and Spiritual) without intruding upon therights o others or working to the disadvantage or detriment oothers.

Admittedly, one may achieve worldly, material success in

almost any phase o physical, mundane lie without givingany consideration to Spiritual verities. Man can, i he so elects, wholly ignore the Science, Philosophy and Spiritual concepts(Religion). Tere can be no actual peace o mind or that man, no

unadulterated satisaction, no real happiness; thereore no truesuccess unless the Spirit,1 the eeling, the governing mood o aSpiritual Consciousness overshadows all endeavor; illuminating, hallowing every desire, as the rays o the sun shed their light overall things upon the earth.

Te basis o true religion, the ennobling phase o lie, is thespirit o devotion, an inspired adoration o all that is, ancientlycalled Isis, symbolic o the she or mother side o Godscreation. Isis symbolizes the mother o all things and the highestdegree o eeling o which humanity is capable.

Love, devotion, adoration, sympathy, tenderness, kindness, ellowship, riendship companionship ... unless these eelingsare present in all mans plans, he is lacking in Ideals; his plan olie will be ephemeral, unstable, and his success will be literallysprinkled with the gall o bitterness. Te reerence here is to theinner, exalting, upliting, cleansing eeling that is the basis oadoration; a sensing o the beautiul, the eeling that wells upwithin the true mother when she holds her beloved child in herarms. It is not to be understood that this spirit o devotion hasany reerence to loud and long prayers, nor to the giving o almsto those who, by all the Laws o Nature and o God, shouldexercise the manhood to provide or their own necessities, whatever these may be. Te drone, like the unbearing tree cursed by

    1. Te word Spirit may also be dened as eeling on an Idealistic, yet practical level. Ananxiety to accomplish certain specic things o a Spiritual or Love nature. It is an `in betweenthe Spirit and the Spiritual. It is actually undenable and most requently elt as an urge.

the Nazarene has no right to existence.Te Spiritual side o lie, as opposite to the material, is the

exalted, heavenly (upliting), enlightened (lled with light andlove) in heart and mind. It is best contacted and appreciated

through the medium o prayer, prayer being the expression odesires and Ideals. rue prayer nds expression in continuousconstructive eort within its own sphere. Prayer is the act odoing, living, eeling. Under the Divine Law, Every Act is eithera prayer or a curse. It is this Science, Philosophy and SpiritualConcept in which all men should be instructed.

In this concept o the Laws o the New Order o the Ages,we nd the basis or the achievement o success on all levels, including the attainment o Soul Consciousness. Here wend the impetus or every activity based on honesty and

constructiveness, and or perpetuating the welare o all withinthe Law o a religious way o lie. Every constructive, exaltingact is a prayer because it is the expression o an Ideal and bringsabout a practical maniestation. Toughts, desires and deedso kindly service are practical prayers - these are the tools withwhich we labor in the Masters vineyard.

Tus, the lie o the tiller o the soil, the humble (ungrumbling)toiler, roughly clad... the mechanic...all those who render anyorm o useul service, represent the highest phase o prayer.Any activity benecial to the laborer and essential to mankinduniversally, i perormed in kindly eeling and love, is bothpractical and a Spiritual expression o the highest orm o prayer.Expressing itsel through a constructive activity o mind andbody, it ullls a need in the proper unctioning o universal lie.

Te spirit o the deed, the eeling in which it is perormed

determines the classication o the action. As is the action oreort, so will be the Reaction to the one making the eort. Likethe `Biblical bread cast upon the water, it always returns.

Tat success is most lasting and most secure which continually

has in mind, benevolently and not selshly or hypocritically, thewelare o the Soul, the commanded:

Seek ye rst the kingdom o God... - Luke 12:31.

Te highest and noblest service in the interest and the benet o theSpiritual sel and toward the attainment o Soul Consciousness,is possible only as we ollow the dictates o Natural Law. Manmust use all things: his energies, talents and possessions towarda useul, constructive end, and above all, toward the awakeningand development o the Christos, culminating in Sonship orSoul Consciousness.

Man nds the Christ - not in some ar-o sphere, but righthere on earth, within himsel - by making o that sel thecommanded emple wherein God may dwell. As this is done, the humble son o man, by obedience to the law becomes a Sono God. In the process o attaining this Sonship, the Christoswill become known in the New Order o Ages, as a ManisticIndividualization, a gloried manhood achieved by gloriyingGod. Tis is the command o the Law, the end o all achievement.

What, in this grossly material age, can be greater, nobler ormore sublime, than the attainment o a real, vital, unswayable

manhood? Such manhood is something almost wholly unknownin the present era o weakness, inertia, imbecility, dishonor, disloyalty, irresponsibility and downright slavery to the now sonumerous sel- constituted leaders boasting authority oundedin might, rather than in right.

Te betrayal o trust by those in authority, by religious leaders oalmost all denominations, the agrant and ever increasing actso violence generally attributable to the anti-Christ, - these aredriving people by the millions away rom the ormal established

churches.2 Tinking men and women are unconsciouslydemanding both a new leadership that is unswervingly dedicatedto God and the Divine Law, and a new adaptable, applicableinterpretation o the Ancient Laws o human behavior andactivity.

Here presented is a Science, Philosophy and Religious(Spiritual) concept that may readily be applied to the everydayphysical, material and Spiritual needs o all seekers or a betterway o lie. Although seemingly turmoil reigns or the momentand God, it would seem, has all but orsaken man - as man has

orsaken God - the Eternal Law is in operation, and the Godless, the Anti- Christ, will be destroyed by the Reaction o their ownactions. Te operating Laws o the New Order o the Ages aresurely, though perhaps slowly, coming into operation.

More and more men are sensing and seeing the Godlessness, thedishonesty, the betrayals, the dishonorableness and degenerationo many o the leaders and those in power. Tey are watchingthe debasing and destructive results, and are beginning, asolstoi said, to bethink themselves. Tey are becoming moreand more dissatised and intolerant o empty words, emptypromises, empty orms o worship, and demanding vital truthsand equally vital, constructive activities and procedures in all

    2. It is gross misconception to believe the larger attendance noticed in many churches is actuallya return to belie in the Cross as the way to Salvation and in the Christic Spirit. On the contrar y,investigation indicates it is all too requently due to the preaching o oreign ideologies tea chinga seemingly simple method to escape not only Spiritual responsibilities, but material as well.

human aairs.Forms, however beautiul, promises, however air, are

acceptable only to the non-thinker. Only the thinkers, or thoseawakening to realities ater their long sleep o illusion and

delusion can truly be saved. Tey have advanced to a newconcept, a practical interpretation o mans duty to himsel andto his ellow man. HEY DEMAND OF HEIR LEADERSACIONS HA HARMONIZE WIH PREACHMENSAND PROMISES. Te heart o mankind is beginning to cryout and it will not rest or be silenced until order is restored: theDivine Law ollowed by Priests and leaders o men and those inhigh places.

Te needs and longings o the heart can be satised only withwhat which is real, lasting, eternal; that which comes rom the

heart and not with the trumped up and empty promises o men.Tat part o man which is imperishable...that which we knowas the Soul...can be satised by nothing that is wholly temporal.Within man, usually buried deeply and under ages o debris, may be ound all that brings satisaction; the peace that is atreasure beyond price to those who rightly esteem it - as gold isto the world or which men curse themselves and die.

Te concepts taught in the Arcane, and what is known as theScience o the Soul, in no sense underestimate the requirementso the material, physical man; the Caesar o Biblical teachings. Here man learns unequivocally that the requirements o thephysical material sel shall be selected rom that which canonly benet others. Whatever is meted out to the physical selshall be on a par with that rendered to the Spiritual sel...thusmaintaining a balance.

Te inculcations o the Spiritual Laws o the present age mustwholly satisy the reasoning and conclusions o thoughtul menwhile comorting the heart with logical conclusions. Te presentday interpretation o Natural and Spiritual Laws aim to instruct

by means o logical principles that can be applied in all the dutiesman is called upon to perorm. Tis mode o action becomes amaterial-Spiritual activity which will be the oundation o allactivities in which man engages. It will be the activating principleo a mans every undertaking, all on a natural, normal Spiritualoundation that includes nothing arbitrary, radical or irrational.

oo long mankind has accepted as an uncontradictable actthat a truly Spiritual lie is incompatible with material, social, proessional success, or the ulllment o the duties o highposition or oce. Tis is a wholly wrong conception due in large

part to two seemingly contradictory statements in the Bible:Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesars and to God,the things which are Gods. - Mark 12:17.

    and:

Ye cannot serve God and mammon. - Luke 16:13.

Te word Caesar, means that which is o the material world.the word mammon means the wrong, evil, destructive use omoney - in itsel not evil - in the accomplishment o an evildeed.

Te error, or misconception, also became prevalent because

men have been led to believe that the esh, even its naturaldemands, must be denied and sacriced, that the Spirit maybe exalted. Tis implies in its concept, an abuse o the wholephysical, material man, and itsel works evil, hence is a sin andwholly at variance with the Divine Law.

Mankind, almost in toto is still bound by creeds, dogmas andmass opinion. An increasing number, however are graduallyawakening to the act that Spirituality and true worship has itsbeginnings in the realms o the heart, culminating in constructive

    - NEVER destructive action. the Axiom:As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.

is only partly true and should be revised to:As a man thinketh in his heart, the thought giving birth to

desire; and desire ollowed by action, so will he become.Tought, however noble or exalted, is only o the moment

and then passes on into the limbo o orgotten things. Onemay have the thought o a house, the mental picture o whatthat house is to be, and may even possess the material or it,but unless the thought becomes desire, and the desire is strong

enough to induce action, there will be no house.Tis interpretation o the Laws governing or underlying

Spiritual activities, makes it thoroughly compatible with thedemands o a business career and every manner o materialactivity, so long as a mans actions are motivated by honesty anda willingness to comply with Divine Law. Actually, it assuressuccess because such a one will not be guilty o any action thatwill have a harmul Reaction. Nor does the law ever demand oman that he allow himsel to become the victim o dishonorablepeople, or to sacrice himsel or the benet o those capable

o helping themselves: possessing, as he does, the divine andinalienable right to demand an exact justice. It cannot be too requently repeated that to succeed on the

material plane o action, and at the same time make an eortto attain to Soul Consciousness, is BY NO MEANS EIHER

INCONSISEN or CONRADICORY. On the contrary, one is essential to the other so that a balance may result. Tisundamental truth, previously stated, is clearly expressed in theNazarenes statement as also in all Arcane eachings:

Seek ye rst the kingdom o God and his righteousness [acomprehension o the Law and its application] and all thesethings [all things else] shall be added unto you [as a result o theuniversally active Law o Compensation or Exchange].- Matthew 6:33.

Te interpretations o the new concepts in this New Order othe Ages recognizes the Law o Karma, but simplies it as theLaw o Justice; likewise as the Law o Compensation. It is inperect harmony with the Nazarenes edict:

...For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Galatians 6:7.One does not modiy the other. Instead, one adds positivenessto the other, commanding acceptance and compliance.

Te present text is in no sense intended as a medium toproselyte or to convert a single human Soul now belonging toany one o the present active religious denominations. However,it is a medium to exempliy and simpliy the concepts o theAge-old Science, Philosophy and Spiritual teachings. It oersan easily understood and readily applicable interpretation o theDivine Law in harmony with Natural law.

Tis work is directed especially to those millions who onceheld membership in one or the other o the ormal churches andwho gave up their membership because they could no longeraccept the interpretations o the laws and their application tothe daily pursuits o lie, as presented in the interpretations by

the various denominations o the present day.I these are sincerely and honestly seeking a concept they can

accept, a concept that harmonizes with both Natural and DivineLaws - this volume presents a wealth o inormation.

It explains the Laws o Justice and Righteousness; denies mennothing that is to their welare; yet, at the same time, clearlyindicates the path leading to Spiritual Consciousness; the literalconsummation o the Biblical Spiritual, or Second Birth, and,at the same time, clearly outlines the path to reedom in everydepartment o daily lie.

Troughout the entire text there is considerable repetition.Tis is deliberate and with a purpose. Just as in Opera, orinstance, there is the theme or motive, repeated time and againthroughout the entire Opera, to rmly impress it upon the mind

o the hearer, so with this eort, the purpose sought is to impressrmly and irresistibly upon the mind o the reader the operatingLaw in its multitudinous applications. Each time this Law isexplained rom a dierent point o view and or a dierentpurpose, always having as its intent an acceptance o the Lawtaught and its application to the readers or Acolytes materialand Spiritual welare.

In some instances new terms are used, or the reason thatbecause o the many rapid changes occurring, many terms, phrases, appellations now in use may soon be discarded ororbidden, and it is expedient that substitutes be prepared andmade use o in advance.

Atheism and the Anti-Christism are rampant. Te Lordo Light is betrayed by many o those who pretend to be Hisservants. Tere are concerted eorts by well organized and

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    9/112

powerul groups to destroy what they call the Divinity oChrist, but which we call the Spirit o Christ; the Christos hiddenin man. Because o the desecration o the name or word Jesus, the ancient orms are used: that o Christos or the Living Christ

who must be awakened by the Second or Spiritual Birth, andthe Nazarene, Master-eacher and Lawgiver o the rst century.Tese names, being in essence, the Christ personication andSpiritualization in the hearts o men, cannot be eradicated orprohibited by legal enactments or malicious acts o men.

However evil some men may be, however bent on thedestruction o all that is highest and most desirable, whatevermeans devised by them or their purpose, it is erroneous tobelieve or to claim that the nations they victimize, though theybe utterly destroyed, have been destroyed by the evil acts o such

men.History o the many nations which once ourished and arenow decadent proves that these nations were not destroyed butthat HEY GRADUALLY FELL INO DECAY BECAUSEHE PEOPLE OF HOSE NAIONS PERMIEDHEMSELVES O BECOME SLAVES O HEIR OWNWEAKNESSES; FAILED O NURURE AND KEEP ALIVEWIHIN HEMSELVES AN IDEAL O UPLIF, INSPIREHEM AND GOAD HEM ON O GREAER GOALS.HEY LACKED HE DESIRE AND EFFOR O BRINGINO MANIFESAION HE MIGHY ALENSHIDDEN WIHIN HEMSELVES, AND, MOREESPECIALLY, HEY PERMIED HE DIVINIY - call itChristos OR WHA YOU WILL - WIH WHICH HEYWERE ENDOWED A BIRH, O REMAIN DORMAN

OR DIE OU.I America, once a republic paying allegiance to the Spirit o theChristos and the Ideal o mans reedom, alls, it will not actuallybe due to the machinations o those engaged in an attempt to

destroy religion, aith in God and the Spirit that IS Christ, but because men, due to their inertia, have PERMIEDthe enemies o God and man, to take over. In truth, men andtheir reedom are not destroyed by others, they DESROYHEMSELVES AND ALL GOD GAVE HEM, BECAUSEOF LACK OF VIGILANCE IN GUARDING SO GREA AREASURE.

Te New Order o the Ages, A Science Philosophy andSpiritual concept, called the Science o the Soul, deals largelywith the Spirit inherent in normal man and which, i awakened

as commanded by the Divine Law, BECOMES the Soul broughtinto Consciousness. Te process whereby this is accomplished iscalled the Great Work, because it deals with all that is highest, greatest and alone is eternal. Tis process divides the activatingincentives governing mens every action into two categories.

On the one side are the PASSIONS - those eelings whichare degrading, demoralizing, debasing and destructive. Teseare many and varied. Perhaps the most general are anger, envy, avarice, jealousy, hatred, maliciousness and ill- will. Tere areothers o course, too numerous to mention, but known to allbecause their REaction is depressing, a lowering o morale, anincentive to inertia, a desire to do harm or destroy, the ever-present desire to GE EVEN. All o these lead to weakness,dis-ease, ailure, inharmony, sorrow, Spiritual suicide; the givingup, as a result o denial, o mans Divine birthright. Tey are the

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    10/112

DEVIL IN MANIFESAION.In opposition are the emotions that have their birth in the centero eeling. Te greatest, most sublime and exalting, uplitingin their tendencies, protable to body, mind and the Spiritual

sel are love, aection, riendship, kindliness, generosity, devotion, adoration, orgiveness and FORGEFULNESS INFORGIVENESS.

All o these are exalted eelings that create upliting vibrations.Tey lit up the body and mind and awaken the Spiritual sel, theChristos within, and wisely direct, give health and well-being tothe body: success in material aairs and aairs and, at the sametime, impart Immortality or Consciousness to the Soul.

In the Arcane, the hidden mystery o the Great Work, theterms Son o God, Philosophic Initiate, Occult Master, are

more or less synonymous as are those o Soul Consciousness,Philosophic Initiation, Illumination and Christication. Teyare all ends achieved as a result o exalted desire, continuedeort to awaken the hidden Christos into Consciousness, as wellas to bring the Biblical indicated talents, mans possibilitiesand capabilities, to the highest degree o development. In eachinstance a two-old development is essential: that o all physicaland Spiritual potentials. Te dierentiation in terms is due tothe direction o the development.

Te Church Formal and the Church Christic

Te Church ormal is an organization o those o commonideals, common needs, human association. As long as there isone human being who has not come into the understanding othe dictates o the Divine Law, such an association or institution

is essential to his advancement. Te benets to be derived romsuch an association will depend entirely on the wisdom o theleadership and the desires o the individual and his willingnessto obey the Divine Law.

Te Church Christic is actually the temple o the living God.It is the Gnostic, or Church o the knowers. It is individual.Every one who obeys the Divine Command to prepare, orBECOME such a temple by means o eliminating all possibleevils - the Passions - rom within himsel, and at the same timemakes consistent eort to awaken the Christos within himselso as to become Soul Conscious is, in himsel, Individualized, the Church o Christos, o God. o deny this is to deny GodHimsel:

Know ye not that ye are the temple o God, and that the Spirit

o God dwelleth in you. - Corinthians 3:6Tis is NO a normal state, it is a BECOMING by desire andeort and the gradual elimination o weakness and all that isdebasing in its nature. Tis is the GREA WORK. It is theMystery o the kingdom o heaven and given, a COMINGUPON, o the ew who OBEY HE DIVINE LAW.

Ages change; a new cycle ollows the old. In natural orderand by Spiritual design, the New Order should begin withthe benets, advancements and Spiritual attainments achievedduring the old and advance rom there. Unortunately, during

all o the past ages, the change o Cycles began in a DYINGnot a living age, and all because o the inertia o the massesin ailing to recognize their Divine inheritance and to reelyexchange eort or the retention o the reedom o body, mindand Soul. Inertia in each instance took the place o vigilance,

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    11/112

and the inheritance was lost.Te past age ended no dierently than did all the other ages, yet these signs are signicant: Great advancement is reectedin inventions that are as two-edged swords, destructive and

constructive. Greater material and Spiritual knowledge are inevidence, but unappliedor misapplieddue to universal inertia.Freedom is given up without a struggle, or sold or a messo pottage. Morality has reached a new all-time low; there isan almost complete loss o Spiritual verities; almost universalirresponsibility, dishonor, or lack o honor, treason - all the signso a decadent and dying humanity.

All o this was oreseen ages ago and clearly visioned by theNazarene, the prophets and the ounding Fathers o the Republicovershadowed with wings and by those who visioned the

possibility o a New Order o the Ages or those living within itscircle. Tere was also the possible destruction o the great massand the beginning o a new race rom the small remnant whochose to obey the Divine Law, thereby surviving the devastation. All this is clearly oreshadowed in Revelation.

Relative to the statements toward the end o the text havingreerence to the New Bible, mens religious blasphemy, publicprayers, Biblical inculcations in public schools, organized eortsto destroy religion, the elimination o the cross as a symbol osalvation, the hidden attempt to make criminal the use o theterm Jesus...these acts may be readily veried by reerringto the revised Bible, daily newspapers, magazines and publicspeeches. ruly, all who have eyes to see, can see and thosewho can read may be inormed. All that has been said might make it appear that the

accomplishment o the Great Work, the attainment o SoulConsciousness, is well nigh impossible or the weak mortal, andthat great sacrice is necessary. Tis is not so. All that is reallynecessary is that man be his best sel. Tere is need or a change

in character.Te undesirable and unworthy must be gradually eliminated -

changed - transmuted into - what is commonly called a sweetnature. Man must ree himsel rom criticism, intolerance, intererence in the aairs o others, and that universal weakness- babyishness - paralyzing sel pity- another name or selfshness.Man needs to devote less time to gratiying new wants otenunnecessary and even detrimental, and to nd more time andopportunity or constructive work to be done. Especially tobe desired is a gradual but certain replacement o the passions

which never served any good purpose, and a transmutation othese passions into upliting and Godly emotions.LIVE HE LIFE and ye shall have the ruits thereo - is

the command and the promise. A prime necessity is to acceptand become conscious o the act that the body, the physical, material sel, is the ground or soil to be prepared or thesowing. the Will and Desire inducing eort are the sowing...and in the sowing is the assurance o reaping or recompense orthe eort made.

It is written that when the Nazarene, the Master-eacher oGalilee, generally called Jesus, asked his disciples: Whomsay ye that I am? Peter answered him and said: Tou art theChrist, the Son o the living God. Te Nazarene replied:

Blessed art thou, esh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. - Matthew 16:16,17.

Flesh and blood, the material sel, is not and cannot beconscious o Spiritual things. Only that which is Spirit is able tocomprehend that which is o the Spirit. Tis Spirit is the Godpart hidden WIHIN every normal human being. It is almostuniversally unawakened. and unconscious, because VERY eware those whose desires are great enough to cause them to makethe eort to awaken and bring this Spirit into maniestation.

When this awakening is accomplished, then another part

o the Great Work is well under way; that o transmuting bypurication into ennobling emotions all that is o the body, thephysical sel, the gross passions.

Tis brought about, the body becomes - Biblically speaking- the EMPLE OF HE LIVING GOD, and as a result, Goddwells within that temple.

Spiritual things, Godly things, can become known only tothe Spiritual. It is thereore truthully written that only God theFather, who is in his heaven, could have made known to Peterthe real nature o the Nazarene.

Te Spirit within man is mans unawakened or awakenedSoul. It was known by the early, pre-church Christian Fathersas the Christos. Tese early men o God taught, even beorethe word Christ was known, that within every normal humanbeing there existed a Spark, or part o God, in the orm o Light

or Fire, and that each human being, might, i he so desired, awaken and bring into maniestation this Christos or Spiritualsel.

It was promised that in doing this, he would become an

individual church or temple or this Christos, having byeort become the living Christ within man. Tis was to beaccomplished not by mere belie, or aith, but by eort, and isclearly indicated by the statement: Know ye not that ye are theemple o the Living God.

Te Nazarene, throughout his entire ministry, made everyeort to convey this knowledge to all who would listen to him.It was this: Tat i man, as a result o his own constant eortand desire did everything possible to live in harmony with theDivine Law, in thought, desire, and elling, he would rebuild his

material sel - body, spirit and mind - and would, at the sametime, be building the temple wherein God, the Immortal sel, could and would dwell.

In so doing he would also awaken the dormant or buriedChristos into Consciousness, attaining an at-one-ment withGod; becoming a Son o God - Christos transormed into aChristic state. Tis Christos awakened and become conscious, would make known unto him the mysteries o the kingdom oheaven, a secret knowable only to those who obey the DivineLaw.

o know God, to become conscious o the Christos within, ispossible only to those who, by their Spiritual awakening, comemore or less ully into unity with the Soular selhood conveyedto all men at birth in an unawakened or unconscious state.

During the many centuries between the ministry o the

Nazarene and the present age, the true conception o the Christicmysteries has been lost to all but the ew endowed with a keendesire to become that which God desired them to be, and whomade, or are making, every eort to obey the Biblical command

to develop all their talents. the Nazarene was ully conscious othis, hence the statement to his disciples: o you (that is to theew), it is given to know the mysteries o the kingdom o God,but to others: (because o their unwillingness to ollow me, thatis obey the law I teach), it is not so given.

Troughout the ages only the ew out o the millions havecome to know the Mysteries o the kingdom o God, andhave had all other things added thereto. Tis has been so onlybecause o mans basic weakness - his selshness - his desire orglory, temporal power, the plaudits o men. Man preerred the

material things o earth that would give him ease and demando him the least eort and sel-denial. All this had the tendencyto bury still more deeply the Spiritual alents and the Sparko the Divine, the Christos, which he inherited in embryo(unmaniested orm) at his birth into the material world.

Unortunately, throughout the ages, mankind sought theattainment o intellectual knowledge - cold and uneeling - andscholastic achievement, irrespective o its ultimate desirabilityor possible Spiritual benet. Tis again had the eect o buryingthe Christos even more deeply within the Biblical tomb, andgave rise to a tendency to question all things, even God, leadingman toward atheism rather than toward Eternal ruths.

Te greatest enigma is not in the act that the mysteries o thekingdom o God may be revealed only to those who obey theDivine Law, and that this will bring to man ALL things else,

without loss o anything material or spiritual, but that most omankind reuses to recognize the Law. By non-recognition mandees the Law, attempting to secure by sel-destructive meansthat which might be possessed lawully, with blessings, instead

o the absolute certainty o losing all; including his Spiritualinheritance.

Te Divine Spark rom the Divinity Himsel, the Christos, which by desire, eort and obedience to the Divine Law wouldbecome the Christ, the Son o God, is inborn in every normalindividual. Tis Christos is not a human, material element. TeChristos become the Christ is the individualization o God inman; the unity o the Christ Child and the Godly Father, theend and aim o lie.

Individualization, despite every eort made by men

collectively to prevent it, means rising above the mass, andattaining the only reality in this or any other world. Te eort toattain individualization is the only means o individual Spiritualsurvival. It is the eternal warare between Satan, symbol odestruction, and the Christ, symbol o Eternity.

Te Christ, or the Nazarene becoming Christic or theChrist, is not a term limited to one person, nor does it representan experience which took place only or uniquely in the lie othe Nazarene, known as Jesus o Nazareth. Te Christ is theSpiritual or Conscious Individual Soul realization that may beattained in the LIFE o eVERY MAN, IF HE WILL OBEYHE LAW LAID DOWN BY HE MASER-EACHER oHE FIRS CENURY.

Tis Law is now Reinterpreted or all peoples o the presentor Manistic Age - the NEW ORDER o man. o become

Christ-like, Christied, Soul Conscious, God Conscious, is toreach a SAE OF CONSCIOUSNESS possible to all whowillingly meet the conditions essential or its attainment. It isthe Christos, Spark o God, the Divinity, awakened and brought

into INDIVIDUALIZED CONSCIOUSNESS. Mankindshould not orget the absoluteness o the Divinity and HisLaws, a knowledge available to man throughout the ages. Tisknowledge has produced world teachers o Divine Law, such as:Osiris-Isis, the Master-eachers o Greece and other Countries, the Nazarene called the Christ, and lastly, he o the New Order,Manisis; all o these representing one great achievement oattainment: Manhood gloried, God made maniest by, and in,man.

In its incarnation, or as a result o its incarnation in humanity,

this Divine Spark becomes unconscious and non-individualized.Trough deliberate eort on the part o the possessor, this DivineSpark is awakened and gradually brought into Consciousness asan individualized entity. Anyone or anything that intereres withmans eorts to individualize himsel retards his progress towardhis ultimate attainment; his material welare and Spiritualdestiny. Such a one acting in deance o the Divine Law tendsto eclipse or short-circuit mans ull development o his Biblicaltalents, as demanded o him by his Creator.

    In its primitive or original state, this Divine Spark is anemanation or separation rom the Godhead; just as the germinalseed in the acorn is an emanation rom the parent oak. In thenal, ully awakened and developed state, ater being broughtinto ull Consciousness, it is the maniest Son o God, a Divinitybecome such by its own eorts and there ore in its own right;

just as the acorn, just as the acorn, sel-planted or by design,in proper soil, under proper conditions and with no inimicalintererence, becomes the giant oak, a perect pattern o itsparent.

Te teachings, examples o lie, and accomplishments o theNazarene were not, in themselves, the reason either or the ameor the deamation attending his lie and ministry. Te potentideals he pronounced and requently demonstrated, became theincentive or those who heard him, to ollow in his ootsteps.

His Spiritual Ideals were the secret o the inuence he exercisedamong men, as also the act that he would not deviate one jotor tittle rom the Path laid out or him or the dictation o theDivine Law - the Fathers Will.

Prophets beore him had, at least in part, taught the same

Arcane doctrines; had healed the sick and even raised the dead. Inevery generation o men, seeming miracles had been perormed, but prior to the ministry o the Master-eacher none had daredpreach the Way, the ruth and the Lie as openly as he did; nordared condemn evils as ercely and consistently as he did, andall without the slightest ear or his own saety; knowing, as hedid, that death would be the penalty.

None o the prophets and teachers since Egypts greatness andglory had dared to teach that every Soul in human orm wouldbe responsible solely to God, and not to other men, whatevertheir position o earthly greatness. He taught that each Soul borninto the orm o man, is a trust, actually a pawn, or either thepayment o evils done, or a receiver o the reward or its aithulstewardship i.e.,or the talents placed within the Soul as a testor mans obedience to God or His Divine Law, or Deance

o the Law. Tese truths, these expositions o the Divine Lawcould be taught, revealed, exemplied, demonstrated, andpersonalized only by one who actually LIVED in harmony withthem; had become ONE WIH HE LAW and had no regard

or the saety o his own lie. John in the Wilderness gave voiceto only a ew o the pronouncements and paid with his lie, justas the Nazarene was to do later; all because he thought not ohimsel, but constantly had in mind the welare o humanity. Both recognized the wondrous benets that would accrue toman i he would obey the Divine Law, awaken the ChristosWIHIN himsel - the God IN MAN - the God WIHIN hisinner temple into Christhood in accord with the divine dictateYe are, that is, may become the temple o the Living God iyou will obey the Law.

o actually know - not merely believe in - the Christ, thisGod-in-man, or in the temple, it is, rst o all, necessary to solive and make eort as to bring the Christos into Consciousness. It is then that this Christos, or the Soul, may attain to Divineselhood, i.e., individualization; reedom rom the dominationo other men who are not living in obedience to the Divine Law,as well as rom their own evil and destructive tendencies.

Te Nazarene, like other men beore him who had chosen asimilar path, was enabled to attain the supreme Consciousnesso being, or Cosmic Consciousness, in the one incarnation inwhich he was born as Jesus o Nazareth. Te one all-important

dierence between him and those beore him who as the sons omen had, according to the Biblical statement, become the Sonso God, was in the act that he was willing and ready to oreithis lie to prove to all men that they had the opportunity to do

as he had done. In other words, to so live that the death o thebody, the material sel, would have no eect upon the Soul, theDivinely-awakened Consciousness within.

It was written, presumably by his oldest disciple, but no matter

who, that the Nazarene was tempted, like as we, (all men),and yet was without sin. So concerned was he with his missionon earth that he was obedient to the Divine Law above all else.Tis statement presupposes - and who is there with authority toquestion it - that the Nazarene was destined to meet the sametemptations, and was actually subject to the same passions andthe same laws, natural, moral, and ethical, as are other men.

However, his one great desire, his ideal, was so strong andso overwhelmingly predominant that it held the desires andappetites o the esh in subjection until he succeeded in

RANSMUING HEM IN HE DIRECION AND FORHE PURPOSE o HIS ONE GREA DESIRE.As a result o this ONE, all-predominant desire, he was able

to keep himsel ree rom the bondage which every selsh andignoble desire imposes on all o mankind, as also rom thedictation and domination o other men. As he was ree romselsh desires, he could not be bribed, threatened or by anymeans induced to do that which would retard his progress andthe ull development o the talents with which he was born, orthwart the mission he had set out to accomplish.

Te Christ - a principle in being - is synonymous with the

awakened Christos, BECOME the Illuminated, ConsciousSoul. It is a part o the ourold nature o the perected man, isin intimate relationship with every other department o mansnature and thereore active in the dictation or direction o mans

every thought, desire and act.Te incarnate Spark o the Divinity breathed in at birth - at

rst latent in every normal human being, but capable o beingawakened, developed by thought, desire and action into a state

o Individualization, or Individualized Consciousness - has thenbecome the Conscious Soul o man. Developed and Illuminated,it has BECOME Christic, hence as a Son o God. Tereore, thisattainment to Consciousness or the Individualization o boththe person and the Soul - this reciprocal, hand-in-hand progressconstitutes the state o Christhood.

Stating it another way, the unconscious Soul is the germo Divinity, i.e., Godhood, in an undeveloped orm. It is theSpark or part rom the ather o humanity which is conceivedin humanity through material-maternal conception; capable, by

desire and eort on the part o the possessor, o being nurturedand anned into a Flame or ery state - God Himsel alwayshaving appeared to man as a Light or a Fire - culminating atera time in Soul Consciousness or Christhood.

    HE MIND

Te mind o man came into being or existence at the momentwhen body, spirit (which is lie) and the Flame that is the Soul inembryo merged into a single unit, then man became a consciousbeing, capable o thinking and reasoning - a reasoning being;hence a human being dierent rom all other creatures - a man.

Tis mind is the analyzer, having the ability to reason, decideand judge between right and wrong. Te mind is responsible ornourishing and anning the Soul Spark into a Flame or Light;this Light ultimately becoming the Conscious Soul.

Te mind is actually the architect, as well as the builder, othe Soul. Te mind must select the material, this materialbeing thought, desire and incentive to action. o the mind, the reasoner, selector and director, is delegated the mission

o developing the inner Spiritual sel, the germ o Divinity, into Christhood, or Sonship. In other words, the mind is themedium or the development o the talents with which man isborn. Te minds choice is tremendously ar-reaching; a choicebetween selshness and carnality, and their opposite, idealismand idealistic accomplishment aecting both the, as yet, personalsel and humanity.

    HE BODY

Te body, lowly as it may be, is the oundation upon which all

must be built. It is the world wherein all operations, all activity, must take place. It can be, and should be, a sacred sanctuary;made so by the marvelous alchemical processes through whichthe threeold operations in man - mental physical and Spiritual -become elevated, ennobled, unied and harmonized in a perectcentralization o Idealistic Individualization on the one hand, ora cesspool o evil and destructiveness on the other. the choice isthe responsibility o the person not yet become an individual.Te penalty or blessings are upon the Soul within, which, though as yet not conscious, must o necessity accept the burdenor the blessing.

Te body, in the Divine tragedy o humanity, though lowlyand earth-born, the Biblical worm o the dust, is both the battleground and vehicle or all Spiritual operations. It urnishes thecrude material and uel, in its carnality and gross passions, or

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    17/112

the process which makes possible the building o the Spiritualor Soul. Were this not true, then the God Father erred grossly inthe creation o physical man.

Te body is not erroneously and ignorantly to be considered

as an undesirable accident; bitter experience through which theSoul must pass; but an essential in developing Divinity out ohumanity; the means or the experience as a result o which thesons o men BECOME as the Sons o God, knowing by theexperience both good and evil.

    HE SPIRI OF LIFE

Te spirit, concerning which there is such great conusion, is thelink holding body, mind and the Divine principle together. Tisspirit is the lie orce or activating principle animating all livingthings; even the atoms o steel. It is the lie equally o the tree, the vegetable, the beautiul ower and man. It is interchangeablebetween the animate and the inanimate. Te spirit is lie. It isthe lie and the heat o the ame. It is the warmth o the body.It is even, indirectly, the activating principle o mans deepesteelings - love.

Without the spirit there could be no warmth; withoutwarmth, there could be no lie; without lie, neither aectionnor love; both the earth and the heavens would be void. Asspirit, it is neither elt nor seen; yet it pulsates through the bero everything that is.

Te universal conusion relative to the word spirit is dueto its dual usage; dening as it does, the lie o all that exists;not seen, nor elt, but activating all that is material, and, at thesame time applicable to all that is highest, most Divine. Spirit

(capitalized) has reerence to God the Creator, the Cosmic Souland the Cosmic Consciousness, the Divinity within man, theessence that is riendship, aection and highest o all, Divineand human love. Spirit is all that is eternal and never changing.

Why should this be so? Because no other word than Spiritualhas yet been coined by any man throughout the aeons o timethat embraces and includes the universality o all that is highest, greatest and best in both Divine and human nature. Te termSpiritual is applicable to all that is. It embraces everythingthat applies to all that is Divine and above, just as the wordspiritual (not capitalized) includes and embraces everythingthat makes material things possible.

Te solution to the problem is not dicult i those in searcho the ultimate, o the Way, the ruth, and the Lie, will bear

in mind that the uncapitalized word spirit has reerence tothe lie principle, while the capitalized word Spiritual hasreerence to all that is Holy, Divine and Eternal; including theaectionate and love nature o man; the Divinity that is hiddenwithin himsel and generally known as his Soul, as well asthe eternal sel- created Creator known as God, the Father, theChristos and God in man.

Tese, in brie, are short descriptions o the various departmentso mans being while on earth. I any o the our natures o manare out o balance there is inharmony, and where harmony islacking peace cannot exist. Peace being a state o heaven, the

lack o it constitutes the hell o mans earthly existence. Hisrst duty then, is to establish harmony.

Mind is the executive o the entire corporation known as man.It is the architect responsible or the biblical temple not built

with hands, that is, to give residence to the Soul ater the DivineSpark has been awakened and brought into Consciousness.

Mind is also at one and the same time, the awakener othe embryonic Soul and its gradual development into that

Consciousness. It must thereore receive prominent considerationin this volume devoted to the Biblical ten alents.Mind is the womb in which is born every thought and desire

o which man is capable. Perhaps it might be said that physicalneeds give birth to desire, but desire is part o the mental processitsel. It thereore is the duty o mind, by means o its reasoningability, to analyze and judge every thought or desire at themoment o its birth and retain and direct it i good; or reject iti it will serve no useul, constructive purpose.

Every thought the mind thinks, or that comes into the mind,is a vital, living reality i retained. It is a vibratory (living, active)orce possessing in itsel either constructive or destructive power.Whether permitted to enter the outer ether or retained, everythought becomes a part o the inner sel, either liting upwardsthat inner sel, or degrading (damning) it to the degree o itspotency or good or evil.

I the mind o man is lled or activated with the eelings ogentleness, sympathy, aection, love, devotion or adoration, heradiates the vibrations o these eelings. He surrounds himselwith them as with a brilliant light; maniests them in his everymovement; in his voice and by the look in his eyes; but greater

than all these, the vibrations are impressed upon the DivineSpark within himsel. Tis Divine principle acts as a lmupon which everything man deeply thinks, desires or does isirrevocably impressed.

Likewise, as certainly - i possible, even more so - the oppositeeelings o ill-will, hatred, malice, o resentment, jealousy, unorgiveness, eelings o resentment o unjust treatment andthe many other evil passions, create a vibratory orce which

maniests in mans every activity.Tese impress themselves upon the record within, areunconsciously sent out in the manner o a radio station, andnding no resting place, return to the sender with increased orceand are the cause o his weaknesses; his illnesses, his ailures, hislack o peace o mind and happiness. Tey cause him constantdiscontent and mental distortions but he blames everything buthimsel or his many afictions.

    EMOIONAL VIBRAIONS

All o the varied gradations o emotional vibrations known asaection, love, good-will, kindness, generosity, orgiveness andthe many others, are constructive, ennobling, elevating andSpiritualizing and, to tell the truth, they also build health andvitality. All emotions belonging to the category o ill will, hatred, malice, resentment, avarice, unkindness and similar eelings, aredegrading, debasing, destructive and depressive upon the minditsel, the body and the Spiritual sel, even though that Spiritualsel is still unconscious.

Te Nazarene devoted much eort in teaching man to recognizethe great powers inherent in the emotions o riendship, good-

ellowship, compassion and gentleness combined with rmness, graciousness and sympathy. He was positive in his inculcationsthat kindly motives, good works, clean thoughts and loty desires, would always yield a desirable harvest, basing this conclusion

on his edict: As ye sow, so shall ye reap. His recognition odivinity, his daily ministry, his simple lie, was the most positiveevidence that his own heart was lled with the eeling that isakin to love, and an understanding o truth illuminated by the

clearness o his outlook on lie in all its aspects.Basically, the Soul is the ountain, the source, o every shade othat which we know as riendship, aection and love. Friendshipand aection are phases o that which is most eternal in thehuman Soul: Love. Each o these has its own application. Onets in where the other does not.

Te passions that include hatred and malice may undamentallybe phases o these destructive eelings, may be in head and heartalone, but their evil and degrading inuences are, in the rstplace, directly upon the Soul and then upon the person towhom directed. Te vibrations resulting rom every thought anddeed, whether good or evil, constructive or destructive, impressthemselves upon the record. Tat record is the Soul.

Tese impressing vibrations are the Biblical RecordingAngel; they never sleep nor do they miss one jot or tittle. Tegood, or Godliness, maniested as love o truth, benecence andreadiness to orgive, open the inner door o the hidden Great Within to the unoldment o the Christos hidden or buriedthere. Every one o these exalted eelings creates its own vibrationand bears ruit o its own nature, be this sweet or bitter.

ry to sidestep as we may, the act remains that MAN IS

HE CREAOR OF HIS OWN DESINY, hence IS HECREAURE o HIS SELF-MADE FUURE. Moreover, perhaps regrettably, to a lesser or greater degree, he helps inshaping the destiny o all whom he contacts and as a result,

to the degree o his undesirable or evil example and inuence, will be orced to pay the penalty. Tis is an irrevocable Law ewrealize.

Practically everything in our environment was drawn to

ourselves by means o the attracting vibrations we created. Weunction, both consciously and unconsciously, in hope, a peaceakin to happiness, goodness and kindliness, or their opposites.Te soul itsel is revealed to the degree o its progressivedevelopment; this development depending on the intensity andconsistency o our desires.

I the personality, the as-yet undeveloped individuality, isevilly inclined or led astray: (1) It dwars, cripples and retardsthe Souls progress by its eeling o envy, jealousy, hatred, maliceand all o the other degrading and stultiying passions, whetherman realizes this or not. (2) It has, at HE SAME IME, a likeeect upon mans physical sel, mind and body, (3) as also hismaterial or economical welare.

Te three departments are aected as a single unit. It were arbetter or men to nish their journey on earth halt and blindand otherwise physically imperect, but whole o Soul, than tonish lies brie existence physically perect, but imprisoning aSoul still in darkness.

Te Biblical temple not made with hands must be built bythought, eort and desire. I the desires are o the right nature, then the hidden Christos will also, and at the same time, be

brought to an awakening and the means toward this end aregoodness o a positive nature, kindness o disposition, notmerely o act; wisdom directing all eorts. All this is plainlyoreshadowed in the ew and simple words uttered by the

    Nazarene:

Know ye not that ye are the temples o the Living God.- Corinthians 3:16.

Yes, there is an ever-present God ready to direct mans every

eort. Millions have read these words, and untold millions haveheard them, but ew have been impressed by their inconceivablyvital importance to themselves and all humanity.

Uncounted numbers have been told that hidden within theirbeing there is a part o their Creator, a Spark to be anned into aconsuming Fire; a ame that will consume within the sel-beingall that is unworthy, undesirable and retarding to their everyeort. I this Christos is permitted to grow in stature as did thebody, man will come into complete control o the direction ohis own destiny here and hereater.

Know ye not... No, mankind does not know. Men have readthe words. Tey have heard them spoken innumerable times. But, like surace water on earth that ails to nourish vegetation, neither the meaning not its implications sank in, and thereorethey derived no benet. Others have listened to the words; havegiven thought to them, but oolishly led themselves to believethat they might have the benets by aith; as a result o some oneelse doing his own work, and theirs in addition.

Tey should have been impressed by some potent means that:...Ye are the emples o the living God, but that entrance to

the temple is impossible until that temple is made clean andprepared or its Glorication by means o pure thought, lotydesires and deliberate and consistent eorts.

Tis preparation or building o the temple includes within itscategory the command: Judge ye not. A mans behavior, his

eorts, his habits bespeak the man. A man judged by his actionsmay be indierent to all renement and all honor. Such actionsare to be condemned, as within him there may be awakeningdesires not yet strong enough to direct his actions. Tis no

man may know because only God and he can know what isin his heart. Moreover, we who cannot see within him, cannotknow what the inner directing orces may be; nor the reasonor his actions; thereore, we may not judge the man, thoughwe condemn unworthy acts; nor may we excuse ourselves romequally great evils because he, our neighbor, is guilty o them.

God is no respecter o persons; nor can he be deceived. Bothyour neighbor and you will be judged or what you really are, notor what you appear to be or try to make others believe yourselvesto be, but or the thoughts, desires and eelings harbored withinand your acts in the world o action. God created man in Hisown image; His creation was perect. But man, having been givenree Will so that in his activities he might be like God, saw tto abuse this privilege, debasing all that is good and noble, andseldom thinking or acting in a wholly noble and constructivemanner.

In this betrayal o so great a trust, man, ollowing in theootsteps o his ellow man, instead o God or the Law, andnations ollowing in the lawless ootsteps o other nations havesold themselves into slavery. Teir own ree Will has becomethe evil Will o their dictators and thus must continue until the

man who sleeps within awakens and commands obedience tothe Law operating or the good o all men, to the degree o theWillingness and Readiness o the individual to obey Divine Law.Men, all men, including ourselves, see as through a glass darkly,

and terribly dark it is! Seldom, i ever, are we actually awareo what manner o spirit (sel-being) dwells within us, until webegin to awaken rom our long sleep in darkness and vaguelysense the actualities o what lie was intended to be by Him who

called us into being. It is not until the inner, better sel has partlyawakened and we see a glimmering o truth in the distance, thatwe begin to be conscious also o the Spiritual sel hidden withinus. It is then that we hear His voice, not in words, but bypromptings, and there is an inner incentive to mend our waysand to learn o lie as it may be or us i we are willing to ulllthe contract o our destiny.

Within each and every one there is awaiting, patiently, butexpectantly, that which is greater than all else in the world; greaterthan possessions, honors, powers; because with the awakeningo the Christos, as a result o our desires and obedience to theLaw, we will become, by degrees, one o those o whom theNazarene said:

Unto you it is given to know the mysteries o the kingdom oGod, but others are taught in parables, that seeing they mightnot see, and hearing, they might not understand. - Luke 8:10.

Seek ye rst the kingdom o God [build that emple within sothat God may dwell in it} and all [other] things will be addedunto you. - Matthew 6:33.

Never did He say: I you would have honors, power, possessions,

be great among men AND IN HE SIGH OF GOD, cheatyour ellow men, enslave them, deraud them and take possessioneven o their loved ones, and you shall be great in the land othy God. Nevertheless, men by their actions, almost universallyhave translated the command o the Nazarene to mean just this

and nothing more.Within every man, ever present, is a watchman that no power,

no orce, no man, no temptation can lead astray or cause to betrayhis duty. Tis watchman, the Recording Angel, transcribes

into the Book o Lie o every man his every transgression, and is just as aithul in entering therein mans every goodness,be this o eeling, desire or eort. Tis is the book o accounts, and each Soul must answer or every act during its pilgrimagehere on earth.

Tis is not as grim as it would at rst appear. Nor is it asdicult as it seems to reuse to bear ill-will toward ones ellowman. It is not too dicult to prevent ones sel rom takingpossession o that to which one has not earned the right. It isnot too dicult to bethink ones sel, instead o seeing onlythe evil in man, to see the good; weigh the good against the evil, and act accordingly.

Feelings become habits. With each better eeling anotheris born until we look or something to be bitter about. Withevery smile we see on a trusting childs ace, we will see another, perhaps on the ace o the woman we meet around the corner.

Evil gives birth to evil, goodness and kindliness to goodnessand kindliness. Te common saying: Birds o a eather ocktogether, is based on an eternal truth and can readily andcorrectly be applied to our every thought, desire and act.

Love, not the passion generally so called, but the actual

Spiritual eeling o love toward all - called goodness or wanto a better word, is the key to the eternity o existence. It is toevery stumbling, struggling creature as a beacon light rom bothabove and within that will dispel the dark valleys o lie with its

rays and bring the Soul into greater Light. In time and orderlyprogress it becomes the Souls Consciousness; God Gloried.

Man is NO man because o his orm or being born o woman. He is man only to the degree o a development within himsel othe elements o aection, kindliness, sympathy and compassion, and his capacity to think and reason. Every normal human

being, that is to say, every one born into the world who haswithin himsel the capacity to eel or others suciently, so thatthe cruelty o the beastly or carnal nature is held in subjectionin dealing with his ellow creatures, is a normal human being.

Tere are, even in this day, in various parts o our earth sphere, literally millions o beings having the orm o the human being, who are not human because they lack humane eelings, thecapacity to actually love. Tese are more directly related to theanimal than to the human kingdom, and in them despite theirhuman orm, there was not born the Divine Spark.

Teir nature is innately suspicious, treacherous, cruel. Somuch so, that their erocity is greater than that o the cruelties oall cruel animals, or animals seldom i ever, kill except when it isnecessary as a means o obtaining ood or to protect themselvesor their young. Tis cruelty and inhumaneness, not to sayungodliness, on the part o man, has been amply illustratedduring the recent teen years o warare.

When we state that in every normal human being there existsthe Divine Spark, a particle o the Godhead; a lesser Light rom theGreat Light, we have reerence only to those whose developmentthroughout the ages has been such as to give them the capacity

to love; to love both individually and in general. With this, orAS A PAR o HIS CAPACIY O LOVE unselshly, there isalso the capacity or deep and sincere aection; true undeviatingriendship, loyalty, kindliness, compassion, generosity and

JUSICE UNDER ALL CONDIIONS.When the Nazarene stood at the well at Sychar and requested

a drink o water o the Samaritan woman who was condemnedand abhorred by nearly all o those who knew her, he quickly

sensed and intuitively elt the potential love nature o whichshe was inherently possessed and which had led her, as it haduncounted other women throughout the ages, into a lie o sin- sinning having reerence to a MISuse, or MISdirection, o acapacity, ability or capability. In her case it was the MISdirectiono her creative orces; a sin o which all too many are guilty, andbecause o which the world as a whole today so gravely suers.

According to the Biblical narrative, this Mary not onlygladly and willingly complied with the Nazarenes request, but listened respectully to his teachings. She accepted themwithout question or suspicion and became a convert in act, notin mere aith alone. In doing this she proved that, at heart, inHER FEELINGS, she was neither evil not vicious, and that hercapacity or good was as great, i not greater, than that o any oher sisters.

Tis change rom being a woman o the street to a sincereollower o the Nazarene and the Christic lie, illustratestrue conversion. An actual change not only in thought, butalso in desire, an acceptance not by aith alone, but by aithFOLLOWED BY ACS. Tis is true conversion, the onlyactual conversion.

As a result o her conversion she also gained the means andthe method or the transmutation o the creative orces ormerlyabused and debased, into the divinely potent orces o love -a love that induced her to oer her all; aection, kindliness,

sympathy, generosity and ALL that is possible when humannature is transposed into Divine Nature.

Te transormation o the woman o Samaria is a lesson toall who will accept it as proo that the great evils within can

be changed into the uel which gives birth, lie and strengthto the Divine Fire WIHIN, provided the nucleus, the DivineSpark, exists hidden, possibly deeply buried within, waiting tobe aroused and brought into a ame o Lie, Light and Love.

Mankind is more certain to learn by example than byinculcations, however loty they may be. Te people o Samaria, having ull knowledge o what manner the woman o Samariahad been, the lie she had led, and the great change wrought bythe inuence o the Nazarene, were, in turn, led to ollow in herootsteps. In this Biblical example o true conversion or changein lie, we are brought ace to ace with a great eternal act:

Te Nazarene did NO lower himsel to the womans status olie in order to convert her; to change her mode o lie. Instead,he, by his strength, his sINCERIY, his NOBLENESS OFPURPOSE, lited her up to his conception o what lie shouldbe, and HOW O LIVE I.

By this one example in the Nazarenes lie and ministry we arebrought ace to ace with two glaring modern allacies:

    (1) Tat men can be made good, noble, kindly, and trust-worthy, can become possessed o love, kindliness, gentleness andgenerosity, by means o orce, and:

    (2) Tat the individual - having in mind a personality - or a race, can be uplited to the status o the higher, by means o the higherlowering themselves to the plane o those they would help.

Even in the unawakened and undeveloped state, there is a

Soul, a Divine principle in man, though possibly still whollyunconscious, as illustrated in the story o the Magdalene. Teproblem: Is there within that being a sense o what we termgood, and which embraces in its meaning, possibly not actual

love, but the capacity o aection, riendship, kindliness, andABOVE ALL, pity? Are these eelings o sucient depth to prevent viciousness,

cruelty, uncontrolled lustulness or beastliness? No beast othe eld or woods would stoop to acts committed by beingsparading in the orm o men, as in the butchery committed inRussia during the early part o the century and which hangsas a Karmic curse upon the race that committed these crimes, and ALL WHO HAD DEALINGS WIH HEM OR HEVICIOUSNESS OF BEINGS IN HUMAN FORM DURINGHE LAE WARS.

Within the generous and charitable human being thereexist the Divine Spark, which by the exercise o kindly, noblereelings and the necessary desire and eort can be brought intolie. Tese like Mary, will become greatest in the kingdom orwhich the Nazarene was laboring.

Te humane being comes into the knowledge o his Spiritualpossibilities and capacities, only by the result o an awakeneddesire. Following this experience is born a willingness, aye, anxiety - as in the case o Mary - to make the necessary eort; theWill given birth by the desire and eort, succeeds in awakening

the sleeping, inert Divine Spark and ultimately brings it intomaniestation and consciousness.

As this honest and sincere eort is made, all pretense, subteruge, petty and bold hypocrisy, deceit and above all, sel-

righteousness, will be cast aside or, more correctly speaking, willserve as uel, by conversion, to give lie to the Divine Spark thatis to become the Soul which shall know no death.

As progress is made by the gradual development o the

talents or orces hidden and dormant within, the likeness othe Soul to its Divine counterpart will become apparent. Itsorigin in the bosom o the ALL Creator, the Cosmic Soul, willby recognized. As man undergoes the process o regenerationall doubt will pass and he will be as certain o Divinity as wasMary ater accepting the Nazarenes direction and assurance oher complete redemption.

Te assurance o the DIVINE IN MAN is contained in theBiblical assertion that God breathed the breath o lie intoman and he (man) became a living Soul. Tis statement is asimplication o the original text which had its beginning andwas taught in precept in the Ancient Mysteries in Egypt, longcenturies beore the lie and labors o the Nazarene.

Te term man implies a human creature who througheons o gradual development not only attained to the humanorm in the image o his Creator, but became possessed othe Divine attributes among which is eeling; making o mana man. But or the birth o this eeling, it would have beenimpossible or this creature to display the God-like qualities olove, aection, kindliness, sympathy, devotion and adoration;and an understanding o the sorrows and suering o his ellow

creatures with a desire to help them.By the inbreathing o the breath o Lie and a part o

the eternal Spirit, i.e., the Divine Spark, man was given seedwhich, i planted, that is, NURURED, would awaken (grow)

    25/112

and by desire, eort and action, become DEVELOPED INOA LIVING SOUL. Tis seed or Divine Spark could not bea LIVING SOUL until it had attained Consciousness; andthis Consciousness could be made possible only as a result o

acceptance and by awakening, as did Mary, the desire to sothink, FEEL and live that the seed o the Divine might grow anddevelop as does the human seed into the child; the child into theyouth; the youth into the adult, himsel a creator o his kind.

When man has attained to Soul Consciousness, then has hebeen born again o the Spirit, as was his body in his motherswomb. Ten, and then only, is he a Living - a Conscious Soul.Ten only is he ully aware o both good and evil; become, asa result o his suerings, his desires and his experiences, as likea Son o God. Until this inner Consciousness is attained, manmay honestly, sincerely and unquestionably believe that hepossesses a Soul, but he has no knowledge that this is true. Aterhe has attained to this Spiritual Consciousness, then he is ascertain o it as when, awakening in the morning, he gazes outo the window, sees the shining sun, and he knows that it isdaylight. Paul speaks knowingly o this REgeneration when hetells us that:

He was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable wordswhich it is not lawul or man to utter. - II Corinthians 12:4.

Here he tells us in simple words that ater much traveling i.e., ater

great and continuous eort, he was able to ree himsel o all thatretarded Spiritualization. Puried o all guilt o consciousness,or conscience, he achieved inner peace (paradise) and then, likeSolomon, he came into a knowledge or understanding (knowinggood and evil) o such import that he was not allowed to speak

o it to any who had not so attained; to whom the Mysteries othe Kingdom o God had not (as yet) been revealed.

Te breath o Lie has nothing whatever to do with the Spiritor the Soul. Te breath o lie is the principle o lie. Without it

nothing can live. It is to the body that which the Light is to theSoul. A sharp and never to be orgotten distinction is to be madebetween the Soul o man, and the spirit o man.

Both the breath which gives lie to man and the Spiritemanate rom God and are part o His creation. Te spirit, thatis, the lie o man, is o itsel, unconscious and its expression ispossible only through the actions o man. It is a means to anend. It is to the body as gasoline is to the engine. Te Soul, orSpirit, on the other hand, is an eternal principle, and thoughman may destroy himsel, his personal sel, he cannot destroythe Soul any more than he can destroy the spirit which is his lie.

Te spirit which animates man does not possess the eternalizingpower o orces insoar as man is concerned, though in anothersense it is eternally existing - passing rom on thing, one beingto another. It is an element, non-individualized, unconscious.

Te spirit i man is eternal in that it existed beore anyindividual being ever breathed it in, and it will continue to existas long as there is any living thing, be this man, animal, tree orower.

Te Divine Spark, being a part o God or the eternal Flame,is invested in man or the purpose o individualization. It

possesses the inherent possibility o becoming an eternal entityindividualized, Centralized, sel-existing, a Son o its Creator.Coming, as it does rom God, it has the inherent Right todevelopment into the Spiritual image o its Creator; with all,

    26/112

though in a lesser degree, o the creative powers possessed by theCreator Himsel. Tese are the Biblical talents that are mansinheritance, but must be brought into maniestation by manhimsel; God will not do this or him, nor can any other man do

it or him. Hence the dictate: As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Notas another may sow, or be orced to sow or you, but ONLY asyou sow.

All things in nature have dual qualities represented by goodand evil; by God and His opposite, the Devil. Man has ree Willand is at liberty to abuse and debase the Soul; but in doing so hedestroys himsel, NO the Soul.

Nothing in existence is o a single nature. Tat which can beennobled, exalted, raised on high, is equally capable o abuse, demoralization, degradation, degeneration, hence the terms weuse to describe states o becoming: Degeneration, REgeneration.Tat which is capable o doing good, or being o service, obenet to man, is equally capable o evil o every nature, evento the destruction o man himsel, but in this God provided aproviso: Men may destroy the bodies o other men, but theycannot destroy their Souls, and in destroying the bodies o theirellow-men, except when necessary or sel-protection, theydestroy themselves, body and Soul. All this is illustrated in theNazarenes statement:

Te Soul that sinneth it shall die.

Tis statement is a simplication o the original text and wastranslated to make it understandable to all men. Te Soul, beingpart o the Divine, cannot actually be destroyed. What is meant,is that he who sins Soulully shall be beret o his Divine Seland return into nothingness. He himsel, shall be lost. Tis is the

Law. Te Law is ounded in Justice:

    Justice dictates:

As ye sow, so shall ye reap. - Galatians 6:7.

Tat which ye do, ye do not only to others but more especially

to yoursel in a twoold manner: In suering or loss to yoursel;and in being compelled to compensate those whom you deceivedor derauded.

All that exists, all that grows and maniests, is evidenced in theeternal unctioning o the Law. Tis Law is basically Action andREaction. Action sets up a vibration o the nature o its activity. It perorms its unction and returns to the actor, or creator o theaction. Lie itsel, the result in inbreathing the breath o lie,is activity. Activity is vibration. Vibration creates heat. Heat islie. Where heat ceases to exist lie becomes extinct. Every act

creates it own peculiar activity and this activity is a vibration.Tis vibration cannot be neutral. It is either constructive ordestructive.

Mental activity, thinking or desiring, determines the trend olie insoar as we are concerned. By thoughts and desires mansets into motion an activity which is or physical and Spiritualbenet, or the gradual, sometimes violent, destruction ohimsel. Man cannot truly benet his physical sel without at thesame time benetting his Spiritual sel; nor can he make eortto benet his Spiritual sel without at the same time benetting

mind and body. Here again, the action is dual.Toughts and desires o kindness, compassion, aection, together with other ennobling eelings, rmly established inthe mental sphere o our being, and becoming the activatingmotives o our every action, will gradually transmute all that

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    27/112

would otherwise be destructive to ourselves and others.Man, in the department o his intellectual center and his

conscious mental activities, is responsible or the developmento the Soul, the Spiritual sel dwelling within him. Trough

normal unoldment, by means o his reasoning ability, theSoul sel will ultimately become a potent center o constructivevibratory orces capable o disintegrating and then raising theslow, heavy, degrading vibratory currents due to unbalancedcarnality and materiality.

Te Divine in man, and there is a Divinity in almost everyman to a lesser or greater degree, may by centralized andintensied to a high degree o orce by which to gain the gradualascendancy over every carnal tendency. It would be incorrect tosay material tendency because much that is material, unlessit is o a destructive or degrading nature, is essential to thedevelopment o mans ourold nature and the talents inherentin him.

It is most certainly possible or the Divine nature to transmutethe carnal and material into that which is upliting and to mansadvancement. At present, in the lives o most men, the earthlyand carnal desire or sel-satisaction, sense indulgence, thirst orpower and dominion, high places and glory are actually, thoughslowly, consuming the Divine; leaving not so much as a shred oit or the attainment o Soul Consciousness and Immortalization- the aim and end o mans incarnation on earth.

It must not or a moment be concluded that the DivineSpark itsel is destroyed. At the end o a continually destructive, vicious, malicious, and murderous lie, one beret o all pity, sympathy and compassion, such as has been common over

large portions o earth during the past orty years, the DivineSpark, i it originally existed in these endish ones, will returnto its primary abode, totally divorced rom the personality itinhabited. At a later date it will again take up its pilgrimage in

a new personality, with the hope o better results; the possibilitythat it will be cherished instead o abused; and be brought intothe Consciousness o its Divine origin.

As part o the Innite, the Divine Spark, even in the mostbeastly men, it is indestructible. Nevertheless, having incarnatedor imprisonment, much ater the ashion o the Godly manbeing imprisoned or enslaved during lie by the most viciousenemy who would do all but destroy him, and at last gaining hisreedom by the elimination o those who held him imprisoned.

Te development in man o the Divine element as a potentialSoulual Light oreshadows the gradual growth o the Soul intoan individualized entity; into an individualized Center o thehuman-Divine Consciousness; the primary reason or the Soulsincarnation into the human orm.

I the grosser elements o mans nature are permitted tocontinually and consistently overshadow and overwhelm thisDivine element and keep it buried beneath the rubbish omateriality so that its potentially Divine qualities cannot unoldand maniest, it becomes as a seed sown upon a bed o stones. Itlacks the conditions that permit it to germinate; like the grainso wheat ound in Pharaohs tomb, which though lying there or

thousands o years, contained within themselves the potentialsor germination and reproduction. Tese wheat germs remained, during all the intervening centuries, in their native, undevelopedstate - mere potentialities.

  • 8/3/2019 Reuben Swinburne Clymer - Soul Consciousness

    28/112

So long as the carnal nature is decidedly in ascendancy, theessentials o Divinity in man constitute little more than anucleus around and about which an accumulation o carnalityhas collected and buried it, as under the Biblical tomb. I it is

orced to so remain until the transition known as death, theaccumulation that held it imprisoned, is rent asunder; symbolizedby the great storm during the Nazarenes crucixion and death.Te mortal and evil, the cha o Revelation is thrown backinto the great melting pot o nature.

Te Divine essence, the undeveloped, UnindividualizedsleepingGod. is returned to the haven o the All-Father, to restand then return on another journey; seeking to nd the rightmedium that will help it, the son o man BECOME as oneo the Sons o God, knowing good and evil. Such pilgrimagesmust continue until the Soul has an opportunity to pass throughits second birth, that o the Spirit, which no Soul can avoid iit is to come into God, or Cosmic Consciousness.

In the exact proportion that a man awakens to his capabilities, recognizing the possession o the talents hidden WIHIN anddevelops these talents while expressing the Divine nature ohis being, will he maniest and portray his Cosmic progenitor, not alone in his Divine nature, but also in the material world oaction. He thus becomes an active dual being; unctions withequal acility upon both planes in thought, desire, eeling andaction, and not by procession alone.

A potent reerence to this is ound in the rst Epistle o John:He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not his commandments,is a liar and the truth is not in him. - John 2:4.

For a man to proess to be a Christian, that is, that
