Brought to our Attention By HRA Member Jerry Middendorf

[email protected]

In a recent post to the HRA Facebook Page, Jerry mentioned that starting next year, travelers from certainstates will need to have a passport to travel within the United States. Since this will potentially affect HRAmembers traveling to the 2018 reunion, I did a little research. Here is what the Department of HomelandSecurity says:

NewsroomReal ID Identification Not Needed For Domestic Flights Until 2018

MAY 15, 2017

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that REAL ID-compliant identification, such as a driver'slicense from a REAL ID-compliant state or a passport, will not be required to fly domestically until January 22,2018. Prior to this implementation deadline, residents of all states may still use a state-issued driver’s licenseor identification card for domestic air travel.

Effective January 22, 2018, air travelers with identification that does not meet the REAL ID Act requirementsand whose state does not have an extension must present an alternative form of identification in order to boarda domestic flight. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include U.S. military or dependent ID, DHStrusted traveler cards, airline or airport-issued ID, passport book or passport card, or federally recognizedtribal-issued photo ID.

We encourage you to check the REAL ID compliance status of your state on the DHS website and reviewTSA’s list of acceptable forms of identification. You should also check with your state’s licensing agency abouthow to acquire a REAL ID-compliant identification card.

We encourage all travelers to Apply Early for a passport well ahead of planned travel or REAL IDimplementation dates. Whether renewing a passport or applying for the first time, the passport applicationprocess can be completed without added stress if done ahead of time.

There has been increasing demand for U.S. passports in recent years. Our peak season is January throughAugust, so during that time you can expect us to take longer to return your passport to you. If you can wait toapply during our slow season, between September and December, your passport will be returned to you morequickly.

NOTE: You can fill out your passport application online, athttps://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports.html

Tip fromHRA Member Bruce [email protected]

As some of you know, Marianne Baumgärtel Way is currently in Hof, to be with her sister who has end-stagecancer. Marianne recently posted a “HELP” request on our HRA Facebook Page. She was wondering howshe could get hooked up with Internet while she is in Germany.

Bruce Cook was able to help her out. He and Brigitte divide up their year between the U.S. and Germany, andBruce had the following tip:

“You can get an Internet USB Stick from Aldi’s. Talk to Aldi’s about the best way to get it registered, and then you can get 5 or 5.5 gigs of data for 15 Euros for 30 days. Just be careful and make sure youchoose the Internet XL which you can use 24/7. If you use a lot of data, the 5 or 5.5 gigs will not lastyou 30 days.”

NOTE: I don’t know about you, but I had no idea that you could do this. When I stayed with my cousin Sonjalast year, the problem didn’t come up because she has Internet service. But, if you are going to Germany andyou are staying someplace where there is no Internet on the premises, then this is a great alternative. Thankyou, Bruce!

FIRST FEMALE ENLISTED PILOT

Tech. Sgt. Courtney poses for a photo before the 558thFlying Training Squadron's Undergraduate Remotely PilotedAircraft Training Course graduation Aug. 4, 2017, at JointBase San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. Courtney is the first-ever enlisted female to qualify as an RPA pilot. Namebadges were blurred due to Air Force limits on disclosure ofidentifying information for RPA operators. (U.S. Air ForceIllustration/Tech. Sgt. Ave I. Young).

You can read the U.S. Air Force article here.

NOTE: As you know, an RPA (UAV/Unmanned AerialVehicle) is controlled via computer. I found this utube videowhich shows what a ground station (the place from which theRPA is controlled) looks like.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6H1rzSNFw0

Having worked in the ISR Directorate while I was at WarnerRobins Air Logistics Center, I can tell you that the software inthese ground stations is constantly being upgraded.

USAFSS TO AF ISR AGENCY 1948-2010

The previous page of emblem descriptions is from a find I made while searching for the origin of the name of“Hof Street” on Security Hill (Annex of Lackland AFB). I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did comeacross the “History of the AF ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance) Agency and itsPredecessor Organizations.” It’s lengthy–over 50 pages; but you can read it online here. (I’m possibly alittle bit nuts, so I printed it out.)

AN GLR-1/AN FLR-12 Site,6915 SG, Hof-Saale, Germany,1965

You can find this picture on Page 17 of the document.

NOTE: It’s been seven years since this document was published.Maybe there is an update out there somewhere, or maybesomeone is working on one? You might just find some of thenewest information at the 25th Air Force website.

HOF STREET ON SECURITY HILL, SAN ANTONIO, TX

Back to my original quest to find out how “Hof Street” on Security Hill got its moniker. According to itsdescription in the Internet, “Security Hill is located in San Antonio, Texas and is part of Joint Base SanAntonio. Primarily mission-focused in cyber and intelligence, Security Hill is home to numerous unitssuch as JIOWC, 24th AF, 67th Cyberspace Wing and the 25th AF (formally known as the Air ForceIntelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency). All units on Security Hill are consideredtenant units of JBSA-Lackland.” Many years ago, I had the occasion to visit Security Hill. A recentnewspaper article about San Antonio’s military history reminded me of that visit. I noted at that time that therewas a Hof Street. I Googled it and, sure enough, the street is still on the map.

I wrote an email to Public Affairs at Security Hill, and asked if they could give me the history of Hof Street. Sofar, I have not heard back. I think I will write to the History Office at Lackland AFB next.

THE CEMETERIES OF HOF

Did you know that Hof has three cemeteries? There is the main cemetery, located at Plauener Straβe 1 in Hof.Another cemetery is located in the area of Moschendorf, Friedhofstraße 27; and the third cemetery is theJewish cemetery near Wölbattendorf, between the Kaserne and the Site.

The Main Cemetery:

Most of you are probably familiar with the main cemetery, located at Plauener Straβe

The cemetery/Friedhof goes back to 1878. About 78 of thegravesites there are protected under the Landmark Status. You can click on the yellow circles on this map of the olderarea of the main cemetery, and get the information of eachlandmark gravesite.

13

At right, you can see a photograph of the gravesites of victims of thebombing of Hof, on 8 April 1945.

What some of you may not now, and what genealogists arehaving a difficult time with, is that a grave site in Germany is notforever in most cases. An article in the Stars and Stripes, on 29June 2010, describes what happens to German graves.“Under German law, families lease grave sites for aspecific period of time, usually from 15 to 30 years. And, ifa family is unable or unavailable to renew the lease, thegrave’s contents are removed and the grave site reverts tostate ownership and may be reused, German cemeteryofficials said.” This often is a disappointment to visitors whoCome to Germany to visit their ancestor’s grave site, and find it gone.

The Moschendorf Cemetery:

The village of Moschendorf became part of Hof on 1 April 1906. Whenit became part of Hof, Moschendorf was also allowed to have its owncemetery; but, because of the old cemetery’s small acreage, onlythose who actually lived in Moschendorf at the time of its incorporationwith Hof can be buried in the Moschendorf cemetery. All others will beburied in the main cemetery of Hof.

At left is theAuferstehungskirche, aLutheran church associatedwith Moschendorf and locatednext to the cemetery, on

Rabensteiner Straβe. The cemetery itself is located on (where else?)Friedhofstraβe and Rabensteiner Straβe (see sketch at right). Info fromWikipedia

Moschendorf has quite a history. From 1878 to 1957 it was home to aporcelain factory AND the Concentration Camp Moschendorf which was

established at the factory site in 1941. Go to http://www.dvhh.org/history/dp_camps/moschendorf-DE.htm forthe history of this camp, in English. After WW II (1945 - 1962), the former KZ camp became a large camp forrefugees. Today, a textile factory (Textilgruppe Hof) and other businesses occupy that area.

The Jewish Cemetery:

During our last reunion in Hof, as we were headed to Bayreuth and other places by bus, we drove by thiscemetery, which is located at the Hohensaas, in the direction of Wölbattendorf. From the comments of someof the bus passengers, I could tell that this was the first time they had noticed that cemetery. If you didn’t livein that part of town, and if you weren’t Jewish, you might well not have been aware that it was there.

According to Wikipedia, The cemetery was established in 1911. During the reign of the Nazis, it was used as astorage area for building materials, and after WW II, it again became a cemetery.

At left is a historical marker for the cemetery–one ofmany markers that the City of Hof has.

A mass grave of 142 Jewish concentration campprisoners is located here, as is a monument which bearsthe inscription "Hier ruhen 142 unschuldig ermordeteJuden - Opfer der barbarischen Naziherrschaft"(Here rest 142 innocent murdered Jews - Victims of thebarbaric reign of the Nazis). For more on this and otherJewish cemeteries, see http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/hof_friedhof.htm.

THE CITY ARCHIVES OF HOF

For you Hofers:

● Do you know who your ancestors are, where they came from, what their occupations were?

● How did streets in Hof get their names?

● Since when does Hof belong to Bavaria?

● Why is the majority of Hof protestant?

● What do you tell people when they ask you about the history of your hometown?

You can find the answers to all of these questions, and more, in the city’s archives. It doesn’t cost you a pennyto use the archives. However, if you do request information, via mail, about your ancestors, then you do haveto pay for the research and for any photocopies you may want the city personnel to send you. (Info fromhttp://www.stadtarchiv-hof.de/)

NOTE: Small groups can book tours to visit the archives, which is something that’s definitely on my bucket list.In my own genealogy research I have requested documents from Hof’s archives several times, and havealways been happy with the thoroughness and the quick replies I got.

Last week I took Calvin to one of his doctor’s appointments at a VA satellite clinic. While I was in the waitingroom with him, I was looking around for anything interesting to read, and came across an excerpt from TheBulletproof Mind, by LtCol David Grossman. Here it is:

LtCOL GROSSMAN ON SHEEP, WOLVES AND SHEEPDOGS

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: “Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident….” “Then there are thewolves,” the old war veteran said, “and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy.” Do you believe there arewolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in thisworld and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become asheep. There is no safety in denial….“Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live toprotect the flock and confront the wolf.”

If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacityfor violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath--a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are asheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart ofdarkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed….

Let me expand on this old soldier’s excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that thesheep live in denial; that is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world. They can accept the fact that fires can happen, which is why they want fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, firealarms and fire exits throughout their kids’ schools. But many of them are outraged at the idea of putting anarmed police officer in their kid’s school. Our children are dozens of times more likely to be killed, andthousands of times more likely to be seriously injured, by school violence than by school fires, but the sheep’sonly response to the possibility of violence is denial. The idea of someone coming to kill or harm their childrenis just too hard, so they choose the path of denial.

Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They wouldprefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports incamouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, “Baa.” Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately tohide behind one lonely sheepdog….

Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be.Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checkingthe breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the youngsheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to thesound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but thesheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizensin America said, “Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes.” The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, “Dear God, Iwish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference.” When you are trulytransformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want tobe able to make a difference.

While there is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, he does have one real advantage.Only one. He is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population.
