CLASS HEADQUARTERS AND SCHEDULE

Reunion 2013 ■ www.middlebury.edu/reunion

June 2013

Dear Alumni,

On behalf of the Middlebury College Alumni Association Board, welcome to your class reunion. This weekend will be a special time for you to reconnect with friends and faculty, and to get a chance to meet alumni from other generations. You will find yourself surrounded by members of the Classes of 1938 through 2008—that is a lot of Middlebury experience.

This program provides you with the details of the many events planned for the weekend—from golf, hikes, campus tours, alumni achievement presentations, Q&A with President Liebowitz, and various panels. Good luck choosing!

On Saturday afternoon, don’t miss the parade of classes up to Convocation in Mead Chapel, where you will hear class memories from 70 years ago up to today. Over the course of the weekend, I hope you will have a chance to reflect on the meaning the College had, and still has, for each of us. Thanks for all you do to make Middlebury the great place it continues to be.

Here’s to walls of ivy for years to come,

FRIDAY, JUNE 7

Noon–4:00 p.m. Organic Farm Open House The Middlebury College Organic Farm is celebrating its 10th year!

It began in 2003, when students, faculty, staff, and area community members established a small, organic garden within walking distance of the campus. Today, the farm is an extremely important asset to the College, providing produce for the dining halls and local community and fostering environmental excellence, academic involvement, and community connections.

Middlebury College Organic Farm, Route 125 west

Noon–5:00 p.m. Biomass Virtual Tour (continuous showings) All are invited to watch a short slide show about Middlebury’s

gasification facility, which is the College’s most significant milestone toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2016. The $12 million plant is centrally located on campus. Learn how the technology used

in the plant has enabled the College to reduce its carbon emissions by 40 percent and to stimulate a local renewable-energy economy.

Donald E. Axinn ’51, Litt. D. ’89 Center for Literary and Cultural Studies at Starr Library

1:00–5:00 p.m. Middlebury College Special Collections In conjunction with the schedule of Reunion Weekend activities,

Special Collections (Rare Books & Manuscripts and the Middlebury College Archives) will offer two exhibits and a special event. Uncle Orlando and Me, an exhibit highlighting a selection from an archive of nearly 200 Civil War letters, 1861–1865, will be on display in the Atrium of the Davis Family Library. The letters, written by Orlando French, an ancestor of Susan (Washburn) Buckley, Class of 1963, offer an extraordinarily detailed and intimate view of one soldier’s Civil War experience. Susan Buckley provides an exhibit statement in which she contextualizes these letters, not only as invaluable historical documents but also as a significant part of her family heritage and her personal journey to produce a book that blends American and personal history.

Special Collections also celebrates the 25th and 50th Reunion Classes of 1988 and 1963, as well as the 100th and 150th anniversaries of

the Classes of 1913 and 1863, with displays of rare archival materials throughout the Davis Family Library.

OPEN HOUSES

Reunion 2013 ■ www.middlebury.edu/reunion

1:00–4:00 p.m. Solar Decathlon Open House: Self-Reliance Come see Self-Reliance, Middlebury’s fully solar-powered home

and fourth-place entry in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Midd kids did it all—and walked away with three first-place awards: in communications, market appeal, and home entertainment, and the highest combined jury score of all the 20 homes in the competition. After the competition in Washington, D.C., the home was returned to campus where it has served as student and visiting faculty housing. Several members of the 2011 and 2013 teams will attend the open house to answer questions about the home’s design and the upcoming 2013 Solar Decathlon competition. That’s right—Middlebury is in it again! Porter Field Road between Porter House and Meeker House

1:30–3:00 p.m. McCardell Bicentennial Hall Science Demonstrations What’s going on these days in McCardell Bicentennial Hall,

Middlebury’s center for the sciences? Come watch live demonstrations and talk with our students and faculty about their work.

1:30 p.m. Have you ever wondered how nerve impulses become muscle contractions? How the brain creates perceptions from sensory stimuli? What a person’s frontal lobe actually looks like? If you have (and even if your interest is just now piqued), then plan to visit Assistant Professor of Psychology Mark Stefani in the physiological psychology teaching laboratory, where he’ll conduct demonstrations and activities illustrating

the anatomy and physiology of human experience. McCardell Bicentennial Hall, Room 236

2:15 p.m. Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Roger Sandwick will present a group of chemistry demonstrations that he and his students have performed at local elementary schools as part of an out-reach science program. The show is designed to “wow” both young and old individuals alike while simultaneously informing them about science principles. Many of the demonstrations are ones that Middlebury faculty perform in their introductory college classrooms.

application process and does not focus on Middlebury College. It runs from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and covers five areas of the college application process: 1) choosing a college; 2) visiting colleges; 3) the process colleges use to select and admit a class; 4) financial aid; and 5) an overview of the Common Application through a hands-on session. Following the final presentation, families may schedule individual afternoon appointments with Student Financial Services. High-school-age children of Middlebury alumni, faculty, and staff, as well as students from Vermont high schools are invited. For any students who are interested specifically in Middlebury College, a group information session will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. at the Admissions Office, and a campus tour will be offered at 2:30 p.m. Priority will be given to juniors. Erin Quinn ’86, director of athletics; Christal Brown, assistant professor of dance; Anne Kelly Knowles, associate professor of geography; and several current students will complete the panel. This session is interactive, with demonstrations of technology in use and plenty of time for Q&A.

In many ways our experience with aging is unique as we blaze a new trail through “bonus years” that most of our parents and grandparents did not enjoy. That’s why we have asked Phil Burgess, the author of Reboot! What to do when your career is over but your life isn’t, to moderate an informal roundtable conversation, where we can discuss our own experiences with (and planning for) longevity—from opportunities for personal growth and enrichment to how to live a purpose-driven life of meaning.Kirk Alumni Center

Reunion 2013 ■ www.middlebury.edu/reunion

1:30 p.m. Discussion with John Elder: “Reflections on Teaching and Learning” Please join John Elder, professor emeritus of English and American liter-

atures and environmental studies, as he explores how his perspective on the books he taught at Middlebury for 37 years has shifted since retirement. “One important influence on my changing outlook has been dedicating myself to playing traditional Irish music on the wooden flute, an instrument beloved of the pastoral poets since the classical era.” He may even play a tune or two to illustrate these newly discovered connections.

1:30 p.m. Campus Public Art Walking Tour featuring Professor Emeritus John Hunisak In the fall of 1994 the president and Board of Trustees of Middlebury

College adopted a “One Percent for Art” policy at the College. This decision set aside one percent of the cost of any renovation and new construction at the college for the purchase, installation, maintenance, and interpretation of works of art publically displayed on campus. A walking tour of Middlebury’s public sculpture collection is the perfect way to enjoy one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country and to be inspired by some amazing art. We invite you to join John Hunisak, professor emeritus of history of art and architecture and the original chair of the Committee on Art in Public Places, for a walking tour of Middlebury’s campus sculpture.

The tour will begin at the panther sculpture on the south end of Alumni Stadium
