The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program includes basic reading, writing, and math skills. These FREE classes are

appropriate for beginning adult readers through the intermediate level as determined by ACC’s reading assessments.

Classes are offered morning, afternoon, and evening at ACC’s Carrington-

Scott Campus in Graham and the Dillingham Center in Burlington.

Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) Call 336-506-4308 Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program offers free courses to adults

with intellectual disabilities who have the academic and adaptive skills to be

successful in a college classroom setting. Our program is designed to foster

reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills with a goal of further

academic study and/or employment. Classes meet mornings and afternoons

primarily at the Dillingham Center.

High School Equivalency

ACC offers many options to help you earn your high school equivalency diploma. Our programs offer free classes

during the day, evening, online, and through a postage-paid mail correspondence course.

This program helps adults who have not graduated from high school to complete their credentials through

individualized instruction. Classes are available day, evening, and online. Graduates receive a diploma jointly issued

by the Alamance-Burlington School System and Alamance Community College.

Study for the new computerized exam which includes four subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and

Mathematics. Total cost is $80 ($20 per subject at time of test).

Newly approved in North Carolina, the Hi-SET offers paper and computer-based testing options for five subjects:

Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Total cost is $50 ($10 per subject at time of test).

*GED and Hi-SET completers all receive an identical High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the NC State

Board of Community Colleges. Each subject can be re-taken up to two times for free.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) programs helps adults improve their skills in speaking English, reading,

writing, and listening. ESL also helps with computer literacy and career readiness.

Specialized classes help students prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam.

All personal student information is kept confidential.

These FREE classes are offered mornings, afternoons, evenings, Saturdays, online and through a DVD

Coursework emphasizes growth and development throughout the life span. 8-week Nurse Aide courses are available at the Goodwill Industries Burlington Community Resource Center,

Early Childhood

Coursework introduces the foundations of early childhood education.

Machining

Coursework introduces processes that are common to the machining industry.

Pharmacy Technician

This course is for people already in the field and will help prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination.

Plumbing

This course will introduce students to the basics of plumbing.

General Office Certificate

Coursework covers word processing, office software and systems, and text editing applications.

Manicuring/Nail Technology

Coursework prepares students for work as a manicurist/nail technician.

Access is a full-featured relational database that is part of the Microsoft Office suite (professional edition). This

beginner’s Access course is designed to acquaint you with setting up databases. You will learn to design a database

so that information is entered only one time in one table but linked (related) to other information. For example,

information about a customer can be entered only once and that information can be related to information about sales

in another table. You should be very familiar with Windows and the other parts of the Office package before taking

Digital Photography

With a focus on improving the quality of your digital photos, this course will begin with a brief history of photography

as an art form and contemporary issues in photography. You will learn basic photographic knowledge as it relates to

General Contractor License Preparation

This course is designed for individuals seeking to become licensed as a general contractor in North Carolina. While

the course is not required in order to be eligible to sit for the exam, it is designed to help improve your chances of

passing. Course topics discussed that the contractor’s exam covers include licensing requirements, building codes,

insurance requirements, pertinent employment laws and blueprint reading. This course is NOT a course on

construction techniques and terminology nor does it tell you how to organize subcontractors and schedule

construction. You should either have a very strong background in reading and interpreting architectural blueprints or

take the basic “Building Blueprint Reading” course. There is a significant amount of books and materials used in the

class, the purchase of which will run about $400-$500. NOTE: While course information will be appropriate whether

you are seeking the commercial or residential license, the course is geared primarily to the residential license. Call

This course will introduce students to the basic of plumbing. Topics will include installation and maintenance of

piping, fittings, valves along with tool safety and standard practices in the plumbing industry. Upon completion,

ACC Yellow Belt Certificate Program

Course provides an orientation to the Lean basic history, concepts, and improvement process. Training focuses on

how to apply and develop Kaizen and Lean principles for minimizing the amount of time and resources used in work

Motorcycle Safety

Basic Rider Course –

The Basic Rider Course is aimed at beginning riders of all ages. Never ridden a motorcycle? Maybe you need to

refresh your skills. You will be amazed with your newly-found skills and confidence. (Even experienced riders have

expressed appreciation for the skills they have learned.) Most self-taught riders are unaware of the skills needed to

minimize chances of accidents or injuries. Successful completion will exempt you from the riding portion of the

BRC2 - The Basic Rider Course 2 is for someone who has been riding for a little while. It’s a great way to learn

more about your riding abilities and the capabilities of your motorcycle. Students interested in attending must possess

a valid motorcycle license or motorcycle endorsement to their license. It is recommended that you have at least 6

months riding experience or 3,000 miles under your belt. You must provide a street legal, properly licensed

motorcycle for the range exercises, and must show proof of insurance. Your bike must also pass a visual safety

inspection on the morning of the class. The course consists of a full day of riding on a controlled course to allow you

to practice new skills or to refine existing skills. If you normally ride with a passenger, passengers are allowed in the

AKC Canine Good Citizen/ Therapy Dog Training

Prerequisite: Advanced Basic Training. This course is taught according to the AKC CGC Guidelines and Therapy

Dog International. Dog/ owner teams will receive training and to be able to walk and behave calmly around all types

of distractions such as other dogs, people, items on the floor and medical equipment. Dog/ owner teams will be

tested and evaluated on the 7th week for temperament and training that ensures proper behavior in the home and

community as well as being able to pass a Therapy Dog Test. Upon passing the AKC portion of the test, owners will

be provided with the necessary paperwork to submit to the AKC to register the dog as a Canine Good Citizen for life.

A list of Therapy dog evaluators will be provided should you wish to have your dog tested to become a therapy dog

and make visits to hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. This course ensures that the dog has temperament and

training to work in stressful situations with composure and good manners, along with ensuring that the dog/ owner

Wood: Woodworking, Furniture Finishing & Refinishing

Do you have an antique or older piece of furniture that needs some work? Would you like to refinish that bargain

piece you picked up at a yard sale? Does that family heirloom need some work before it is passed down to the next

generation? Then this is the class for you. Learn basic minor touch up procedures and basic repair techniques for

older furniture. Learn how to revitalize and restore older furniture to a ‘like new’ condition or upcycle those gently

used pieces for a different look. This class is perfect for the beginning or seasoned woodworker and women are
