Dear Friends,
We are living in an age when it is much easier to see what
separates us, than it is what unites us. In the political arena
where we see the rhetoric that tears the other side down
rather than lifts big ideas up; in a denomination that is po-
larized in so many ways; in local churches that are at odds
with each other over control, and what the future may look
like; and even in our personal relationships, it has just be-
come easier and more accepted to identify with that which divides us. So, this
month, I have a simple message. For the Body of Christ, it is time that we re-
focus ourselves on that which unites us in Christ.
In Ephesians 4:5, we are reminded that there is one faith, one hope, one
Lord… and in that we are reminded that in Christ, we
are united. And so, I challenge you to stop and reflect
on the many ways that we are united, and how to-
gether we can accomplish far more than we could ever
do apart. In the weeks and months ahead, I encourage
you to think before speaking, to pause before posting,
to build up rather than to tear down, to encourage
rather than attack. In other words, I encourage us all to be the Body of
Christ!
I know that this doesn’t erase our differences, but when we are able to act in
unity, there is always hope that these differences can be bridged.
So be encouraged, know that you are a beloved child of God!
Peace!

Rev. Amy Haines Assistant to the
Accessible Worship and Other Ministries
was "Disability Awareness" mandated by the 2012
General Conference. I found the combination of
these two themes powerful, as we ponder how to
give ourselves away as the church on behalf of the
gospel to all God's beloved children.
Dr. David Watson shared his experience of parenting adventures with his son Sean, and Bishop Peggy Johnson shared her experiences of pastoring a deaf congregation, and what they have both learned about the church's struggle and the gospel's message for ministry with people with disabilities. This is not ministry to, but ministry with. How are people with disabilities welcome in our congregations? How are their various needs met, especially when seeking to work with children? How are they and their families integrated into the life of our congregations? Or are they seen as burdens? Are they tolerated yet not welcomed? Are they the forgotten neighbors around us? Dr. Watson shared the statistic that 20% of society experiences life with a disability, either temporary or permanent. A disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that can inhibit normal functioning in society. As our congregations and buildings age, we often become aware of the limitations of mobility when faithful members can no longer navigate the steps into the church building without an elevator or ramp, can no longer access the restroom that is downstairs or at the end of the hallway, or feel in the way as their wheelchair blocks the aisle in worship. Yet mobility issues is only one aspect of disability.
How do our ministries shut out children with ADHD who are expected to sit still for an hour, or children with autism who may be overwhelmed when our music becomes too loud? How do we train our volunteers in Sunday School, children's church and nursery to handle children who are developmentally different than most their age, or who become anxious in large groups? Bishop Johnson reminded us, "One of the greatest things Jesus taught us is accessibility for all God's children." She went on to say, "We need to open our hearts to the possibility that disability is a gift." And that in ministering with people with disabilities, healing is possible in ways that may run deeper than the physical. Bishop Johnson urged everyone to ministry in four areas:
1. PROVIDE FULL ACCESSIBILITY so all can hear God's word and respond
2. PROMOTE SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY to include everyone 3. PUSH EMPOWERMENT so all can use their giftedness 4. PERMIT OPENNESS IN ATTITUDES toward disabilities so they are seen as gifts to deepen understanding of grace and hope

May we all be blessed by the gifts people with disabili-ties bring to the beloved community of God, the church!

this year. The theme was "Given"

Table One Ministries
You are invited to visit, see and taste a brand new ministry in Northwest Plains
District. Table One is a “pay what you can afford” restaurant now open for
lunch in Kenton, OH. Table One is located in the old Brunson’s Restaurant site
to help address food insufficiency in Kenton and the surrounding area. At Table
One everyone eats regardless of their ability to pay. When you come in you will
be invited to pay what you can afford and a little extra for those less fortunate.
If you need a meal but can’t afford it, one will be provided in exchange for your
volunteer time. As such, Table One is a “hand up,” not a “hand out.”
More than a restaurant, Table One is also a ministry designed to create a com-
munity of caring persons where who you are becoming matters much more
than who you were. Table One offers hope in Christ through fellowship and love. Volunteers of all ages are
needed every day to serve in a variety of ways. For more information, check us out on Facebook or at our
website, www.tableonekenton.com.
