D ear families: We all remember when we were young and at one me or another got disciplined by our parents because of our ac ons or misbehavior. In most cases we did not get our feelings hurt or take it personally, because we knew our parents loved us and wanted the best for us. They corrected us not to humiliate, but to teach us. This is called fraternal correc on. It is important not only to show our brother or sister that his or her a tude is wrong, but also to make it clear that we act out of love and respect. This must be done with great cau on, so as to avoid any feeling of hurt or rejec on.

Today, around the altar and through the Word of God, we are invited to share and help one another understand when we are not ac ng with love and compassion. We are actually helping each other to grow as individuals, and thereby strengthening the community. It is when we interact in a loving and produc ve manner that Christ is present, and we can proceed to live the life He promised us.

Tuesday, September 8 is the day the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Charity. She is the Patroness of Cuba.

Our Lady of Charity: May faith be renewed once again in Cuba; that your Church, Lord, be a source of salva on for all. Thank you, Virgin of Charity, for having preserved the faith of the Cuban people; help us to announce your Son to the new genera ons of Cuba.

Q ueridas familias: Todos recordamos que cuando éramos pequeños recibimos una y otra vez correcciones de nuestros padres por nuestros fallos y ac tudes equivocadas. En la mayoría de los casos no nos sen amos heridos en nuestro amor propio por aquellas indicaciones, porque sabíamos que nuestros padres nos querían y deseaban para nosotros lo mejor, por eso nos corregían no para humillarnos sino para enseñarnos. En esto consiste la corrección fraterna. No se trata solamente de mostrar a nuestro hermano que su ac tud es errónea, es muy importante que se note que actuamos mo vados por amor, teniendo mucho respeto y actuando con mucha prudencia, para que la persona a quien nos dirigimos no se sienta herida ni molesta.

Hoy, alrededor del altar y por medio de la Palabra de Dios, estamos invitados a compar r y a ayudarnos mutuamente, a reconocer cuando no compar mos el amor. Cuando nos corregimos unos a otros con amor, entonces nos ayudamos a crecer como individuos y fortalecemos la comunidad. Es cuando nos reunimos, nos relacionamos y compar mos por y con amor, que Cristo se hace presente y vivimos la vida que nos prome ó.

El domingo, 6 de sep embre, en la Santa Misa a la 1:30 p.m. de la tarde, los cubanos celebran solemnemente la fiesta de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre. El martes 8 de sep embre, celebrarán la Santa Misa en español a las 7 de la noche. Nos unimos a nuestros hermanos de Cuba para pedir por la libertad de Cuba; que sus ilusiones y esperanzas lleguen pronto a ser realidad. No más divisiones, no más dificultades, no más exilio, no más dolor. Sigamos perseverando en la oración.

Virgen de la Caridad: Que florezca de nuevo la fe en Cuba; y que tu Iglesia, Señor, sea fuente de salvación para todos. Gracias, Virgen de Caridad, por haber preservado la fe del pueblo cubano; ahora ayúdanos a anunciar a tu Hijo a las nuevas generaciones de Cuba.

El 8 de sep embre es el día en que la Iglesia de Cuba celebra la fes vidad de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre. Tuvo su origen en las minas de San ago en 1687. Un niño, Juan Moreno, la vio flotando en el mar en una tablita que decía, yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad. Su santuario defini vo fue declarado basílica en 1978 por Pablo VI. El pueblo cubano ene gran amor a la Virgen mulata quien lo ha acompañado a lo largo de su di cil historia. La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre fue declarada la Patrona de Cuba por Benedicto XV en 1916, y coronada solemnemente en 1936. En su visita a Cuba en marzo del 2012 el Pon fice Benedicto XVI visitó su Santuario y dijo estas palabras: “He deseado ardientemente venir entre ustedes como peregrino de la caridad, para agradecer a la Virgen María la presencia de su venerada imagen en el Santuario del Cobre, desde donde acompaña el camino de la Iglesia en esta Nación e infunde ánimo a todos los cubanos para que, de la mano de Cristo, descubran el genuino sen do de los afanes y anhelos que anidan en el corazón humano”.

A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Ma hew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correc on is always undertaken with Jesus present to us.

Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible.

We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objec vity is o en ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our mo ves cannot ever be misinter-preted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neigh-bor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law”. (Romans 13:10).

UN MENSAJE DE AMOR En los versículos finales de la lectura del Evangelio de hoy Jesús dice que cuando dos o tres están reunidos en su nombre, “ahí estoy yo en medio de ellos” (Mateo 18:20). Así entendemos que siempre se aplica la corrección fraternal cuando hacemos presente a Jesús.

De igual manera, alentar lo bueno en otros no sólo es actuar rectamente, sino que es una necesidad. El Señor dice al profeta Ezequiel que si él “no amonesta” al malvado para que se aparte del mal camino, entonces Dios le pedirá cuentas.

Vivimos en la era en que “cada quien hace lo suyo” y se suele ignorar la obje vidad moral. Claramente, cuando el mensaje que compar mos con otros es un mensaje de amor, nuestros mo vos no pueden ser mal interpretados. Como escribe san Pablo: “Quien ama su prójimo no le causa daño a nadie, Así pues, cumplir perfectamente la ley consiste en amar”. (Romanos 13:10).

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

During the month of September, as Holy Mother Church devo onally commemorates Our Lady of Sorrows, allow me to express my ongoing concern for the wellbeing of the Faithful of the Diocese of Venice. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may you and your family be upli ed in hope as together we face the challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Subtle signs of hope are emerging. For example, our Catholic Schools were able to open. The Clergy and Faithful of the Diocese have done commendable work in promo ng safety. As a result, Church a endance is gradually improving. More of the Faithful, feeling the urgent need for the Holy Eucharist, have decided it is safe to return to worship in person. With your fellow ci zens, you are adjus ng to safety measures as you shop, return to restaurants, and resume much of your normal ac vi es. Data about the Coronavirus, while not indica ng the threat is over, appears to be slowly moving in a posi ve direc on.

There is s ll a need to protect those most at risk, persons in convalescent homes or with serious health condi ons as well as the elderly. For this reason, a er consulta on, the dispensa on given to all the Faithful, from the obliga on to a end Sunday Mass, will be extended in the Diocese of Venice un l All Saints Day, November 1, 2020. Also, live streaming of the Mass will con nue during this me.

The con nua on of this extraordinary measure allows those who are sick to feel comfortable staying home as well as helps the vulnerable avoid the risk of larger gatherings. It is hoped that those who are healthy and involved in other ac vi es while observing the necessary precau ons will, despite the dispensa on, return to their Parishes for Sunday Mass. Our Parishes are safely celebra ng the Holy Eucharist with a congrega on. If necessary, Parishes could adjust Mass schedules to allow for the observance of Covid-19 protocols and safely accommodate those who wish to a end Sunday Mass. As Catholics, our worship is not an individual exercise. Rather, it is the way of experiencing communion with God and unity with our brothers and sisters.

Please remember the importance of being united in prayer. Your prayers bring needed comfort to those affected by Covid-19 and inspire you to prac ce the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love. Through prayer we manifest empathy and show solidarity with all who are engaged in a physical or spiritual ba le with the Coronavirus.

Your understanding and coopera on in these ma ers has been greatly appreciated. Let us con nue to remain safe, observe the protocols about face-coverings, carefully wash hands, and maintain safe distances. In addi on, you are encouraged to extend a helping hand to your neighbors in need of hope or healing. No doubt, there are challenging mes ahead. S ll, we can face these days with faith and courage because Our Lord is with us, and Our Lady and the Saints intercede for us.

Be assured of my prayer for the wellbeing of the Faithful, as well as the prayers of our Priests. May God bless and protect you and your family.
