The Jesse Tree

A wonderful tradition of Advent which encourages us to remember the Family Tree. This is the name throughout the Old Testament concerning the Birth of His only Son…

Jesse, the father of the great King David of Israel of the Old Testament, is looked upon as the first person in the gene-alogy of Jesus. Some of the most important promises of all were made to Jesse and to his son David, most importantly the promise that God’s only Son would be born into their family. Symbols of the Old Testament ancestor of Jesus fill the tree. Take an ornament from the tree, return the un-wrapped gift with the ornament attached to it and place under the tree. All donations will be given to the Volunteers of America.

Christmas-At-Sea Seafarers’ at the

Port of Lake Charles

Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the Advent and Christmas season, the Stella Maria Seafarers’ Center spreads the love of Christ through our Christmas at Sea Program. Here are a few needed item: bath soap, combs, deodorant, disposable razors, mechanical pencils, hard candy, knit caps, lotion, pens, playing cards, prayer cards, shampoo, shaving cream, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, wash cl0ths and work gloves. Monetary donations are always welcome to help us purchase items needed for each bag. Items may be dropped off or mailed to the Stella Maris Seafarers’ Center, 150 Marine St., Box 10, Lake Charles, LA 70601 or call 436-1315 to have items picked up. Thank you for your generous support of this important ministry!

Treasures From Our Tradition

Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, Gaudete Sunday, is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice! This years Gospel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leap-ing for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary's visit to her aged cousin is an act of compassion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them distinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor parishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were ex-pensive and some colors, particularly purple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mol-lusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Advent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, reminding many peo-ple of Mary s presence at the heart of the Advent mys-tery. That theology is largely unplanned: it s all because of the clams! --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Celebrating Children at St. Theresa Catholic Church

To the parents of young children, WELCOME, and may we suggest…

*Relax! God put the wiggle in children. Don’t feel you have to suppress it in His house. *Sit toward the front where it is easier for chil-dren to see and hear. *Quietly explain the par ts of the Mass. Sing the hymns, pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by imitating you. *If you leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me; for such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” *For children that need a “quieting room” you may go to the side chapel or the front foyer.

To our parishioners…

The presence of children here Is a gift to the parish!

*They are members of this community, and a reminder our parish is alive and growing. *The way we welcome children here directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. *Let them know they are at home in this house of worship. *Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents.

Advent Penance Night at the Saint Charles Center Tuesday, December 18th

5:00-7:00pm

Take time to prepare well for the coming Feast of Christmas by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) in the Chapel of the Assumption at the Saint Charles Center. A number of area priests will be available during these hours of prayer and quiet from 5-7pm. There is no need to call for pre-registration for this program event. As our mission statement reminds us, “The Saint Charles Center stands as a place apart, offering an atmosphere of serenity and peace, where one can deepen one’s relationship with God and achieve spiritual re-newal and growth.” Join us for this sacrament of God’s mercy and joyful peace!
