St. Mary Parish 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 24, 2017
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The parable in today’s gospel has many explanations. In
it Jesus presents a lesson for his first disciples as well as
for his disciples today. It is almost as if he is saying,
“Everyone, no matter when they come to the faith, is
equally precious to God.” As Christ’s disciples today,
we need to celebrate each new generation and culture
that comes to the faith. If we are to be the evangelizing
parish that God intends, we need to welcome all those
who come to our parish, not excluding anyone with a
different language or religious practice, but rather see
them as “equally precious to God.”

Our Lady of the Rosary
Novena September 28—October 6
Feast Day—October 7
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, in
these times of such brazen impiety,
show your power with the signs of
your former victories. Look with
mercy on the Church of your Son, on His Vicar on
earth, and on all the clergy and laity, who are sorely
oppressed in this might conflict.
Powerful vanquisher of all heresies, hasten the hour of
mercy even though the hour of God’s justice is every
day provoked by the countless sins of men.
As I kneel before you in prayer, obtain for me my
requests (mention your intentions). Queen of the Most
Holy Rosary, pray for us.
(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)
Council of Social Concern Items of the month for September

at the Winchester Stop and Shop
Dear Parishioners,
September has always been a very
beautiful month for so many reasons
here in New England. It is often a
month with devastating weather also
for many. For many years my family
had an orchard business in Marlboro,
so this was a month when most of the
crops were harvested. Some of my older uncles recalled the
hurricane of 1938 when that hurricane struck and eliminated
not only the apples from the trees, but also all the freshly
purchased apple boxes that were smashed to pieces and became
airborne to distant fields. Those involved with agriculture
know the precarious nature of weather and critters always
challenging crop production.
This month we also have the opening of our school,
religious education registrations, many funerals and a number
of weddings. In so many ways, the life of a parish is non-
predictable and a blessing at the same time. Our school is a
blessing for not only the children who attend but also for the
entire parish. It is an opportunity for the intellect and soul to be
enriched with God’s graces and blessings. Please keep all the
children and parents in your prayers.
Our next Parish & School Newsletter will be coming out in
October, and I hope this small electronic communication
provides a little insight in to the good things that are happening
both in the Parish and School. One of the main purposes of this
means of communication is to share the many ways our
Catholic Faith is put into action through the many Good Works
and Ministries shared by parishioners and School Families.
Some may not receive this through their email accounts, but
know it is accessible online through the internet connection that
the vast majority of households in Winchester are connected
with.
Last Sunday I met with our Parish Pastoral Council, and
we had a conversation on a number of topics that were
informative. In the coming weeks, there will also be meetings
with our School Board and Parish Finance Council members.
In so many ways, the advisory roles of these boards and
councils are very helpful to pastors/administrators assisting in
the pastoral care of parishioners. I also received word this
week that Fr. Rick has been granted an extension of his leave
from his pastoral duties here through the end of October. His
time away has been fruitful, reflective and enriching to his
priesthood and life. May the Lord continue to bless and grant
him all the graces needed during this time.
On behalf of all my brother priests, I would like to also
thank the many parishioners who contributed to the annual
September collection to benefit the Clergy Health and
Retirement Trust Fund. Your generosity helps provide for the
medical, health care and retirement needs for the priests of the
Archdiocese of Boston. Thank you!
Blessings always, Fr. Michael

CORI Form Weekend September 30/October 1
After all weekend Masses
Every year we are required by the Archdiocese of Boston
to distribute CORI forms to all paid parish and school lay
employees, any layperson who draws a check from the
parish, school or agency (including 1099 folks) and
volunteers 18 years of age and older ministering to
children, youth, elderly, and the disabled or serving within
various ministries, including but not confined to:
Religious education volunteers, pastoral visitation to
the sick and homebound, choir members, Eucharistic
ministers, ushers, greeters, lectors and nursing home
and hospital volunteers. If you belong to any of these
groups, you MUST complete and submit a CORI form!
IF YOU DO NOT TURN IN A CORI FORM, YOU
CAN NOT EXERCISE ANY FUNCTIONS IN THE
PARISH!!
You can return the form with proof of identification
(driver’s license, passport or another photo ID) to the
Rectory (Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm), or bring it to
the Gathering Room after all Masses on CORI weekend.
Staff members will be available to take and verify your
form.
The CORI check is a requirement of the Archdiocese of
Boston AND the Commonwealth of Massachusetts!
Forms and instructions can be found at the Church doors.
Your cooperation is appreciated!
Winchester ABC Bottle Drive September 30, 2017
It’s back!!! After a three-year hiatus, the Winchester ABC
Bottle Drive is back! Bring your redeemable bottles and
cans on Saturday, September 30 from 8am-3pm just
outside the Transfer Station at 6 McCay Avenue. A Better
Chance (ABC) is a national organization changing the life
trajectory for academically talented youth of color via
access to rigorous and prestigious educational
opportunities. The Winchester program has been in
operation since 1971. To learn more about ABC, visit
winchesterabc.org. Have questions about the bottle drive
or want to volunteer that day? Contact Beatriz Harley at
Taize Prayer Service
Tonight (September 24) at 7:00pm we will
celebrate a Taize Prayer Service for peace in our
hearts and in Fr. Dick’s heart. The Taize service
consists of simple chants, proclaimed by all in
attendance with musical accompaniment, a
scripture reading, prayers for Fr. Dick, and a
blessing. Light refreshments will be served in
the Gathering Room after the service.
Beacon Hill Hearings Doctor-Prescribed Suicide Bills
Set for September 26
A hearing on S.1225/H.1194 in the Mass. End of Life
Options Act, which would legalize doctor-prescribed
suicide despite the will of the votes expressed in the
defeat of Question 2 in 2012, is scheduled for Tuesday,
September 26, at 10:30am, at the State House in Room
A 1-2. Please check the bulletin board for information
on what you can do to let your voice be heard.
Music Ministry
Did you know that choral singing boosts cognitive
function, increases social connectedness, lowers blood
pressure and calms the vagus nerve which in turn boosts
the immune system and provides the chance at a longer
life? If you are interested in making a resolution for a
healthier 2017/2018 school year, come join St. Mary’s
10:00am choir. The choir is made up of men, women
and teenagers from ages 12-70+. You do not need to be
able to sight-read or audition to become a member.
There is a place for you in the choir as long as you enjoy
singing and wish to make the liturgy more meaningful
through your participation. The choir gathers weekly to
rehearse on Sunday morning at 9:00am followed by the
10:00am Mass. If you think you might be interested in
joining this welcoming group of parishioners in the
Music Ministry, come to the choir loft any Sunday at
9:00am, and add your voice to the choir. You’ll become
part of a wonderful community while possibly adding
years of improved health to your life!
For more information, call Jane O’Keefe at the Parish
Office, or simply wander up to the choir loft after any of
the weekend Mass to speak to her directly.

OUR COMMUNITY
Today’s Reflection
Every now and then our Sunday celebration reminds us more than usual of God’s lavish and generous love. Today the Gospel presents the parable of the generous landowner and the workers in the vineyard, with the latecomers getting paid as much as those who worked all day. The message is that it’s simply never too late to experience God’s mercy and forgiveness. Today let us pray in gratitude for God whose generosity is so compelling.
Pray for Peace and Safety If you have a family member serving overseas, please let us know. We will publish their names in the bulletin to remind everyone to ask God’s blessing on them, that they may return safely to their families.
