EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP—RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS The Look Have you ever made the mistake of telling your spouse that you’re out of something—only to see them respond with The Look? Then you realize it: of course, he or she knows you’re out of bu!er. They knew it before a bu!er shortage was even a blip on your radar. We might go to the fridge and lament the complete lack of ketchup. Then someone moves a couple items and show us the ketchup that so savagely eluded us just moments before. Some"mes, we all have “the look” when dealing with God. We tell Him our stores are empty. “I’m out, God! I can’t do any more! Can’t give any more. Can’t take any more. It’s all gone.” But we forget: God is the keeper of our stores. He is the one who fills them, and the one who watches as they empty. See, we don’t know how much we are capable of loving. We don’t know how much we are capable of serving. We don’t know how much we are capable of hoping. We see everything with spouse eyes. Only our Creator truly knows the limits of His crea"on. Do you ever make the mistake of telling God “I’m done”? Be careful the next "me you do. Chances are, He’s far from finished working. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

In today’s readings, we encounter two widows who, though among the poorest of the poor, gave generously all they had to live on. We don’t know what became of them, but they had great trust to be able to share despite an uncertain future. Some"mes like the widow of Zarephath, we may feel we have li!le personal strength or resources to share. But the Prophet reassures her and tells her not to be afraid and nothing will go wrong with her. In the same way, God will certainly reward our giving with uns"n"ng bounty. In the Gospel, Jesus praised the poor widow who dropped two small coins in the treasury box of the Temple because she gave all she had. God loves a cheerful

giver, the one who is willing to part with things without any hesita"on. Compassion and care for others surely prompt our own giving. Perhaps like the scribes, our giving may some"mes be marked with a need for recogni"on or affirma"on. Contribu"ng to charitable works is important, but we can also be generous in sharing ourselves in a simple way. We reach out to those in need and giving the li!le we can share with others. During November, we are called in a special way to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest. A book is placed at Bap"smal Font in the church in which you can write the names of your beloved deceased who would be remembered in prayer during this month. I will be gone on retreat from November 8 to 12 (Sunday evening to Friday). I will be joining some of my brother priests and do this retreat at Winona. Please remember us in your prayers. I shall also keep all of you in my prayers. There will be morning prayer instead of daily Mass from November 9-12 at 7:15 am. St. Joe’s will have Daily Mass at 8 am on November 9, 10, and 11.

SAINT OF THE WEEK—EXAMPLES OF OUR FAITH

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini | Feast Day November 13 You may recognize the name St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850 – 1917) as the first United States ci"zen to become a saint. Known for her deep trust in God, she was a courageous woman doing the work of Christ. Her life of service began when she was first refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher. Not one to take things face value, she instead focused her charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy, and in 1877, professed vows there and took the religious habit. When the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, he named St. Frances Xavier Cabrini prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. However, she had a dream she was determined to fulfill. Since her early childhood, she had dreamed of being a missionary in China. Pope Leo XIII, however, urged her to see the need in the west. She traveled with six of her fel-low religious sisters to New York City, where they worked with the thousands of Italian immigrants residing there. Although she experienced many disappointments during this "me, she persevered. When she arrived in New York, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. Rather than come back to Italy and the order she oversaw, she instead found a way to establish that orphanage elsewhere — plus a few more. Throughout her life, she is known for founding 67 ins"tu"ons dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated, and the sick. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago in 1917. ©LPi

Wear Orange Fall ac"vi"es are beginning and the leaves will soon be changing. If you go into the woods to take in the scenery or do another kind of ac"vity, please wear orange or another bright color. Hun"ng season is here, and we want everyone to be safe. Bright colors help hunters more easily iden"fy you. If you are in the woods and see a hunter, stop and make sure they see you by waving or calling out to them. Happy Autumn and Happy Hun"ng!

Handicap Parking We have been having issues with people parking without a permit in the handicap parking spaces on the west side of the church, especially when picking up students from St. Mary’s School. Please do not park in the handicap parking spaces unless you have a permit to do so. These spaces are reserved for those who need them. Thank you.

Campaign for Human Development There will be a second collec"on on November 20-21 for the Campaign for Human Development. There are envelopes in your bundles. Funds raised will help address the root causes of poverty in America through educa"on and self-help organiza"ons. Thank you for your generosity.

No Daily Mass November 9-12 There will not be Daily Mass from November 9-12. There will also not be Confession on November 12. We will have Morning Prayer instead November 9-12 at 7:15 am.

A Seven Sister: One Holy Hour, One Priest, Each Week, One Heart of Prayer Sacred Heart Seven Sisters invites all ladies to join them by commi&ng to pray one Holy Hour each week on a specific day for our pastor, Fr. Swamy. We need Fr. Swamy to celebrate Holy Mass, distribute the Eucharist, hear Confessions, Anoint the Sick and dying, and a mul"tude of other priestly du"es he is called to do as an ordained man of God. Just as Jesus asked His followers to “pray an hour” with Him, we are asking you to pray an hour for Fr. Swamy, who is here in “persona Chris"” in the person of Christ. If you are able to commit to praying one Holy Hour per week for Fr. Swamy, please contact Margaret Supalla at [email protected]. We are also looking for subs"tute prayer warriors, of which men are welcome to serve. No mee"ngs, no dues, you pick the "me and the day! Your reward will be eternal! It is s"ll permissible to pray your holy hour at home, though preference is that you pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Read about the world-wide apostolate at www.sevensistersapostolate.org. Seven Sisters Apostolate started in St. Paul in 2011 with 7 women praying for their pastors in 7 parishes. We now have over 2,200 groups with over 15,000 women praying throughout the world for our priests and bishops.

National Vocation Awareness Week Na"onal Voca"on Awareness Week, celebrated November 7-13, is an annual week-long celebra"on of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote voca"ons to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and educa"on and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these par"cular voca"ons. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebra"on was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Bap"sm of the Lord, which falls on January 13. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was moved to the first full week of November. Please pray this diocesan voca"ons prayer each day: Diocese of Winona-Rochester Prayer for Voca"ons: Loving Father, source of all that is good, we beg You to look upon us with mercy and love. As Your beloved sons and daughters, redeemed in the blood of Jesus Christ, we seek to do Your will in every ac"on of our lives. We beg You now to pour out Your Holy Spirit upon the Diocese of Winona-Rochester and help each member of this diocese to live out the call to holiness given to them in Bap"sm. Please grant us many priests and consecrated persons to serve Your Church, strong and holy marriages that serve as a sign of Your self-giving love, and single men and women who are intent on living out Your plan for their lives. Let each of us be more deeply conformed to Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to live in holiness and love, keep us on the path You have marked out for us, which leads to eternal life with You. May Your grace be abundant as we rejoice in hope and confidently trust in Your Divine Providence each day. With grateful hearts, we ask this prayer through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the name of Jesus Christ, who is Lord, forever and ever. Amen.

St. Vincent de Paul November 7—Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us, “I want you to observe that this poor widow contributed more than all the others who donated to the treasury. They gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live on.” Ask yourself, “Am I only giving from my surplus wealth?” and then donate your gi' in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who are suffering will be able to know God’s love and care. This past week, St. Vincent’s Table served 96 take-out meals. Membership: We meet the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, at St. Joseph’s Church. If you would like further informa"on on growing your spiritual life and serving those in need in our community, please join us at a mee"ng or contact Deb McManimon at [email protected]. Our phone is 507-676-5508.

Building & Grounds Committee Update Our latest significant accomplishment has been the comple"on of the driveway/landscape project. This is the area be-tween the rectory, office, and church. It is the final major project that is part of the overall “refurbishment” list. Not only did we repair the gravel driveway, but we also put in a new sidewalk from the rectory to the church, landscaped this area and the lawn on Cedar Ave., and did an electrical run to the maintenance shed. The area looks great! Harvey Miller did addi"onal work on the doors of the rectory by repain"ng both the back door and the upstairs door to the roof area of the garage. Howard Engen refinished the 2 outside doors of the Narthex. We had to do work on the retain-ing wall and to a church window on the north side of the church due to vandalism. We changed out our flagpole rope and put up a new flag. Congratula"ons go out to our custodian, Dennis Paulson, as he has been a!ending classes and studying for his boilers license. Dennis did pass his test and now has a license to operate our boilers. Thank you, Dennis, for your extra "me and effort. We’ve had a great summer of comple"ng projects! We are con"nuing to work on other smaller projects. Please con"nue to support our efforts with your contribu"ons. Thank you. -Tony Nowak, Chair Building & Grounds Commi!ee, Sacred Heart Finance Council

All Saints Day at SMS This past month, the St. Mary's School second graders prepared for pu&ng on the All Saints Mass on November 1. We dressed up as our saint and processed in at the beginning of Mass. Everyone enjoyed seeing our costumes and signs we carried saying who we were. We studied saints that had names similar to our names and wrote a report on their lives. A'er Mass, we were able to give a presenta"on of our reports to students and guests in church. The students did a wonderful job! We were then able to go around and listen to the Jr. High students give their presenta"ons on the saints as well. What a special All Saints Day for us!
