T he BLESSED TRINITY is the zenith of our faith; and its mystery is this: “ONE GOD in THREE PERSONS… GOD is ONE but not solitary… They are distinct from one another in their relations of origin: it is the FATHER who generates, the SON who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds. The DIVINE UNITY is TRIUNE.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #253-254) From that narrative account of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the complexity of the BLESSED TRINITY, our faith explains this MYSTERY, not in theological terms, but through the expressions of our relationship with God, and the sign of the CROSS: The FATHER as a LOVER! He created us with his love; and we become the image and likeness of this unconditional LOVE. And when say, “In the name of the FATHER”, we touch our minds to be empowered by the wisdom to understand that God is love. This is the reason why we become so loving. The SON as a kindhearted SAVIOR! When God’s image and likeness is stained by our sinfulness, the SON forgives us. He redeemed us by his suffering, death and resurrection. When we say, “and of the SON”, we touch our hearts to be empowered by the grace of Jesus’ compassion and forgiveness. And we respond by becoming reconcilers and live a reconciling life. The HOLY SPIRIT as a SANCTIFIER! The Holy Spirit consecrates us with the fullness of his gifts and mercy. When we say, “and of the HOLY SPIRIT”, we touch our shoulders to be empowered to carry the CROSS of life. And we respond by laying down one’s life for one’s friends. We become holy people of the TRINITY. So, wherever and whenever we are, the TRINITY is present in our lives. This enduring presence of the TRINITY calls us, through the words of Jesus in our gospel to carry the following mission: “Go…make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT… And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

FEAST OF FAITH Liturgy and the Holy Trinity

The Trinity is the central mystery of our faith. We believe that God is one, yet three: total unity and rich diversity. God is not a monolith, but a dynamic community of persons, a perfect, loving harmony of three. And the liturgy is the work of the Trinity. We begin all our liturgical celebrations with the sign of the cross, a reminder of our Trinitarian baptism, and the simplest of all professions of our faith. We believe that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and we gather in the name of this triune God. Throughout the Mass, we address our prayers to God the Father, through Christ our Lord, in the Spirit’s power. And the Father hears our prayer, transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of his Son by the Holy Spirit. The Church is “the sacrament of trinitarian communion” (Sacramentum Caritatis, 16). It is the Trinity who holds us together as well. In the words of Saint Cyprian, we are “a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (quoted in Sacramentum Caritatis, 16).—Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families Most Holy Trinity

Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20

On the Way to Mass: When you pray, do you think of God the Father, Jesus, or the Holy Sprit? On the Way Home From Mass: When do we most often say, “In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”? What does it mean to begin and end our prayers in this way? Living the Word: Throughout the centuries, there have been many names for the three Persons of the Holy Trinity. For example, God is called Father, Mother, Creator; the Son is called Redeemer and Beloved; and the Holy Spirit is called Sustainer and love. Create with your children a chart with three sections and list new names that help your children identify with the Persons of the Trinity. Look to the Bible and Catholic artwork to help with this. Which name do you identify with most?

Matthew 28:16-20, “I will be with you always.” Jesus appeared to the Apostles on the mountain-top in Galilee so the crowd with them could see the Resurrected Christ and get their final instructions: to go, baptize and make disciples, and to teach them all he had taught them. Jesus also promised his disciples, and us, that he will be with us always. Because Jesus is God, he is present everywhere. However, we encounter him in a special way in the Sacraments, especially in Holy Communion. At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine, blessed them and gave them to his disciples, saying “This is my body...this is my blood...Do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19-20). When the priest prays over the bread and wine at Mass, they become Jesus’ Body and Blood. This is how Jesus keeps his promise to be with us always. What can a parent do? Remind children that Jesus loves them and is with them everywhere, especially in the Sacraments. Tell them that in every Catholic church where the Eucharist is kept, Jesus is really present, waiting to spend time with them.
