In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land just north of the town of St. Helena. He immediately sensed the property’s potential. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon, and the property’s gravelly soils, sloped pitch, and excellent exposures seemed perfect for growing grapes. Studies of the soil composition confirmed that it was an ideal location for premium Bordeaux varieties.

Planted in 1998, the Revana Family vineyard is comprised of eight separate blocks totaling nine acres. There are five blocks planted with Cabernet Sauvignon clones, one block of Cabernet Franc and two blocks of Petit Verdot. Clone 337 and Clone 7 were selected for Cabernet Sauvignon. Clone 332 of Cabernet Franc and Clone 2 of Petit Verdot were specifically chosen to provide layers of complexity in the finished wine.

-- 2008 Revana Cabernet Sauvignon --

RETAIL: $150/bottle

TASTING NOTES: The 2008 Revana Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is an incredible example of what the 2008 vintage had to offer. A supple blend of our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2008 vintage is opulent and well-balanced. Dark and dense in color with aromas of lavender, cassis and earthy wild berry, this wine displays great depth. It boasts stunning concentration on the palate with dark cherry, cacao, coffee bean and a hint of caramel. Finishing with full-boded tannins, this wine exhibits an undeniable finesse.

ACCOLADES:

Revana Cabernet Sauvignon 200797 pointsAromas of roasted herb, red pepper and sage are complex, elegant and spicy, joined by ripe currant, plum and black cherry fruit, but this is at its best on the full-bodied palate, where thetexture is supple, graceful and polished. Drink now through 2020.” -- Wine Spectator

Revana Cabernet Sauvignon 2007#4 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2010Houston cardiologist Madaiah Revana grew up in rural India, immigrated to America and caught the wine bug. In 1998, he planted 9 acres of grapes north of St. Helena, across Highway 29 from Grace Family. This 2007 is Revana’s best effort to date. Winemaker Heidi Peterson Barrett ferments small lots and ages them separately for 20 months in French oak (40 percent new) before making the final blend of 92 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.-- Wine Spectator

Alexana Wines was born of Dr. Madaiah Revana’s love of the great wines of Burgundy. In the spring of 2005, Dr. Revana began a search for both the ideal region and an experienced winemaker with the goal of making Pinot Noirs that could rival those from Burgundy. His search ended in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where he met Lynn Penner-Ash. Together they found an 80-acre property in the famed Dundee Hills of Willamette Valley. Sixteen acres had already been meticulously planted with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.

In 2006, the first two wines, a Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir were made from the property. A third Pinot Noir was made from the famed Shea Vineyard.

Dr. Revana then gave the wines and the property their name, Alexana – after his daughter Alexandra Revana.

-- 2008 Alexana Pinot Noir Signature --

RETAIL: $75.00

TASTING NOTES: Carefully had selected for complexity, beauty and overall high quality, the Signature represents the most elite six barrels of wine produced using our estate fruit. The Revana Vineyard is embraced for its soil diversity and exudes intricacies usually experienced from older vineyards. Initally light floral tones waft from the glass, mingling into a melange of black fruits, wet coffee grounds, soil and a kiss of mocha. Electric and gripping as it explodes mid-palate with earth and minerality but without weight, the Signarure is complex and pretty, eternally lingering. Only 140 cases produced.

ACCOLADES:

Alexana Pinot Noir Signature 200893 points | $75| 140 cases made | RedLight and fragrant, brimming with cherry, raspberry, orange peel and spice aromas and flavors. An elegant wine that remains supple and inviting as the finish sails on and on. Drink now through 2018. -- Wine Spectator

Alexana Pinot Noir Signature 200892 pointsThe 2008 Pinot Noir Signature is a selection of the top 6 barrels from the Revana Estate Vineyard aged for 9 months in 35% new oak. It displays a similar aromatic and flavor profile to the Dundee Hills cuvee but with greater volume and intensity of fruit, more structure, and additional aging potential. This impeccably balanced offering will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring and have a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2023. -- Wine Advocate

-- 2008 Alexana Pinot Noir Dundee Hills --

RETAIL: $75.00

TASTING NOTES: The engaging flavor profile of the 2008 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir is quite a departure from what is typically expected from the Red Hills of Dundee. Produced using entirely estate fruit from six clones from seven different microblocks, the 2008 Pinot overflows with deep dark fruit and freshly tilled earth; delicately balancing fennel, spice and smoky nuances. Brooding and tantalizingly mysterious with the texture of raw silk, this Pinot emgulfs the palate and lingers seductively.

NOTABLE POINTS ABOUT ALEXANA:

• Alexana Wines was born of Dr. Madaiah Revana’s love of the great wines of Burgundy.

• Winemaker Lynn Penner Ash’s reputation stretches beyond the border of Willamette Valley where she has crafted world-class wines for two decades. -- 2008 Alexana Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard --

RETAIL: $75.00

TASTING NOTES: Dick Shea’s highly respected vineyard nestled in the steeply contoured hills of the Yamhill Carlton AVA sits on sedimentary soil over fractured sandstone. Staying true to the characteristics of the Shea Vineyard, the 2008 has an intense purple hue, inky and inticing in the glass. Bushels of black cherries and blueberries coalesce with dreams of Christmas spice intensely caressing the nose. An eruption of big bold blue fruit, dusty road and minerality teases, expanding on the mid-palate, bursting with weight, fine tannins and a finish that never ceases. Only 220 cases produced.

ACCOLADES:

Alexana Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 200892 points | $75| 220 cases made | RedBright and refreshing, with a dark cast to the fruit profile despite the light texture, hitting black currant and pluot notes as the finish lingers. The tannins have a mild bite. Best from 2012 through 2018 -- Wine Spectator

Alexana Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 200894 pointsMy favorite of this trio is the 2008 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard which was aged for 16 months in 35% new oak. Darker in color with a splendid bouquet of sandalwood, Asian spices, incense, underbrush, black cherry, and black raspberry, on the palate it is dense and rich while maintaining a sense of elegance. This lengthy, precision offering will evolve effortlessly for 4-5 years and is likely to see its 20th birthday in fine form. -- Wine Advocate

Sitar Wines is an artistic collaboration conceived by vintner Dr. Madaiah Revana which brings together the craft of the winemaker and the artist under the unifying concept of music. He found the sitar, an intricate and challenging instrument, whose 23 strings require constant fine-tuning and maintenance, to be the perfect metaphor for the production of great Pinot Noir as well as an ideal link to his past. Seeking to further embrace the concept of artistry in wine, he asked his friend and renowned artist Thomas Arvid to create an original piece of artwork to become the wine’s label.

Dr. Revana contacted another friend, the highly respected winemaker Tony Rynders to craft the Sitar Pinot Noir. The trio has composed an entirely unique wine – Sitar Pinot Noir. Made from select vineyard sites across Oregon’s Willamette Valley, packaged in a striking bottle and adorned with Thomas Arivd’s original charcoal sketch. Sitar Pinot Noir is a five vintage series that will showcase the transformation of Arvid’s original “Sitar” masterpiece; each unique vintage label will reveal a stage in Arvid’s artistic process from charcoal to completed oil painting on the 2012 vintage.oregon

TASTING NOTES: Medium to deep garnet in the glass, this wine has a nose of perfumed lavender accentuated by sweet cherry and rich plum. In the mouth, bright stone fruit gives way to velvety caramel flavors that are both delicate and poised. NOTABLE POINTS ABOUT SITAR:

• Why Sitar? The sitar instrument is both a link to vintner Dr. Revana’s Indian heritage and a metaphor for the production of great Pinot Noir. It is one of the most intricate and complex string instruments whose 23 strings require constant fine-tuning and maintenance; much like the precision required to craft great Pinot Noir.

• Embracing the concept of artistry in wine, renowned artist Thomas Arvid has been commissioned to create an original piece of artwork to become the wine’s label. Over five vintages, each new Sitar label will showcase the transformation of Thomas Arvid’s original “Sitar” masterpiece; the label for each vintage will reveal a stage in Arvid’s artistic process from charcoal to completed oil painting on the 2012 vintage.

• Devotees of fine wine and art will want to collect each of the five vintages, beginning with the 2008 Sitar Pinot Noir Prelude.
