Tuesday, December 3rd @ 7pm in the Church

There was a sense of anxiety as the seminary classmates gathered that day. They were somewhat surprised when the professor announced that there would be a final exam. Eve-ryone was asking, "How can you have a final exam in preaching?" How could one prepare? What sort of questions might be asked? Throughout the year there had been lectures on sermon preparation and style, but mostly it had been a course of practice and critique. Finally, the professor, who was himself a splendid and engaging preacher, strode into the room and a quiet fell. The familiar blue books were distributed. "Gentlemen," he began, "you may use your Bibles for this exam. You have three hours. There is just one question and it has three parts. Here it is: You have one last sermon to preach in your ministry. It is your last best shot. Choose your text and theme, explain why you have chosen them, and give a full, detailed outline for the development of that sermon." That morning and that question have left lasting marks upon this preacher's life and his min-istry! Today brings us that one last shot in this church year. Today the church brings to conclu-sion all that has been revealed and celebrated in the gospel story of God's work for our sal-vation since that story began with Advent's hope a year ago. Today it must come together for us into one concluding proclamation about Jesus Christ who is "King of kings and Lord of lords." And today we must address that ultimate question about Christ's lordship in our lives and in our world...

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE We are once again collecting for the Christmas Giving Tree Pro-gram. There will be special Christmas Giving Trees set up at each of the church entrances beginning the weekend of November 30th. The special gift tags hung on these trees will suggest the age and gender for whom you can donate a Christmas gift. We ask that you bring the unwrapped gift(s) with the attached gift tag(s) to St. Maxi-

milian the weekends of December 7/8 and December 14/15. The Christmas Giving sup-ports Catholic Charities, Mission of Yahweh, Casa Juan Diego and our own parishioners who are in need during this Christmas season. Do not miss your chance to bring joy and Christmas blessings to families in our community.

OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Uni-verse. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our prima-ry identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it is like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be--a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. Children’s Choir: The Children’s Choir will NOT have rehearsal on Tuesday, November 26th. There is a TIME CHANGE for the December 3rd rehearsal. Due to the Advent Penance Service @ 7pm, the Chil-dren’s Choir will rehearse from 5:30-6:30pm.

Youth at Christmas Mass: High School students who would enjoy singing at the 11pm Christmas Eve Mass are invited to come to a rehearsal on Tuesday, Novem-ber 26th from 6-7 pm in Canticle Hall. Our own David Woodlief, an Aggie student and occasional violinist at the Noon Mass, has volunteered to help organize this “new” ministry for the Youth.

Christmas Caroling: Share the joy of Christmas caroling immediately following the Youth Christmas Pageant on Sun-day, December 22nd. The Pageant starts at 4pm in the Church and afterwards enjoy hot chocolate, maybe a visit from Santa, and festive refrains of Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other Christmas favorites! You won’t want to miss the FUN!

Join Deacon Dennis and others in bringing Christmas to our friends at Elmcroft Senior Living Community. Meet us there and help bring joy to those who cannot come to us! If you sang this weekend, November 23rd, that is great! If you are planning to sing on Saturday, November 30th at 5pm, we are still on board to have you join us! See you then!

We invite you to spend 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes or an hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in the Immaculata Chapel. There are about 300 commit-ted and dedicated adorers in Adoration praying an hour every day so that you can come and visit Jesus exposed in

Please do not tape offertory/donation envelopes. That we may serve Jesus, Our King, with love and gratitude, generously offering our gifts to help build up the kingdom of God here on earth. “….giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” Colossians 1:12 God wants us to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we cannot do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our prob-lems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead.
