Always for Others
By Easter Almuena
You are the image and likeness of God, but with you the morning awakens
With the call to rise not for you, but always for others.
God handpicked you from a myriad of souls, molded you since you were a babe
To prepare you for a journey, not for you, but always for others.
God blessed you with wisdom to use to give form to his plans
And love to carry them out, not for you, but always for others.
Mary walks with you, guiding and loving you
For to her you are a Christ, not for you, but always for others.
You hold the Body of Christ, embrace his name and proclaim it
And a father and counselor you have become, not for you, but always for others.
God forever bless you, walk and carry you when your feet are weary
Bring peace and joy to your heart, for though your life is never for you
It is Christ’s and he delights in you.
Thank You Fr. Bob
For being our pastor for the past fourteen years!

The Word of the Lord
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 In this particularly poetic passage, Jeremiah complains that while teaching the Lord’s word, he is subjected to insults and derision. He determines to remain silent, but he cannot because the desire to speak the Lord’s name is “like a fire burning in my heart.”
Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the Christians to make sacrifices to avoid the trappings of the times, and to do God’s will.
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27 Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2020
“I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in. I cannot endure it... Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, pleasing and perfect.”
Recently some friends told me that they have an agreement, to speak with others about Jesus and their relationship with Him. One person found it exciting, as the person was so receptive to learn of her joy in revealing her story. The second, found it more difficult, as the person resisted, but she was convinced something good had happened.
Like excited children, we want to tell our story, the Jesus story. Others are ready to hear it but someone must bring it to them. If I hesitate, the story will never be known. As the story transformed my life, I look for a way to discern God’s will for me to do what is good, pleasing and perfect.

St. John’s Family Page
Perhaps you recall last Sunday’s gospel, where Peter professes the identity of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. While Peter understood Jesus as our Redeemer, he didn’t understand the divinely appointed means of redemption. Peter does not want to see his Master and friend suffer. Jesus rebukes Peter. Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Then Jesus goes on to speak about the cross. Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. This is one of the paradoxes that Jesus presents to us in the gospel. The cross will always be a part of our lives. The current pandemic and all the far reaching impacts on our lives is a kind of cross that we have carrying for the past almost six months. We carried the cross when the church was closed and we couldn’t receive Holy Eucharist or go to Confession…when we had to isolate ourselves or quarantine…in the lost of income of employment…not
being able to socially gather with family and friends…and in some many other ways. When the cross comes in life, we have the choice to either accept or reject it. When we reject the cross, it becomes a stumbling block to us. However, we we accept the cross, imitating Jesus Christ, it leads us to everlasting life and fullness of life in this world. The paradox Jesus presented in Mt16:25 (whoever wishes to save his life…) is first of all fulfilled in Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus loses His life on the cross, rises from the dead, gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit and the church is born. Losing oneself is a transformation of our will. We give ourselves in service to others and are transformed more and more into an instrument of God’s love. Then the will of God reigns on earth, as in heaven. We do not lose our own will, but the divine will becomes the operating will. Our Blessed Mother’s gave her fiat to the angel Gabriel and said “yes”to the will of God throughout her whole life. Through Mary’s intercession, may we too assent to the will of God, so it may be the operating will in our lives. May God bless us all always! Deacon Mike
Register for CCD now!
CCD registrations are now being accepted for the Fall. Registration is online at www.sjanj.net under Religious Education. Contact Deacon Mike in the Religious Education office, [email protected] or 732-388-1253 for information or questions. The Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese of Newark has directed all CCD programs in the Fall to be digital/remote. The option for in-class learning will be assessed again for resuming possibly in January, 2021. St. John the Apostle Religious Education will offer two options for CCD this Fall. The option of CCD homeschooling enables parents to teach their children at home, using the same book as in-class. New this year is CCD Virtual Learning. Students periodically Zoom live with their teacher and during non-virtual class weeks, complete assignments in the Google classroom.
