The main advantage of the ROV unit is that its design beer controls and contains varnish mist. By posioning the gravure roll and fountain on the leſt side of the applicator roll instead of the right, the “rooster tail” misng from the gravure and applicator roll contact is directed downward into the enclosure’s lower pan rather than upward toward the print secon. This redirecon allows the mist to be more effecvely contained and exhausted, which results in a cleaner-running OV unit which requires less maintenance. Following are details on the features of Stolle’s new ROV unit, several of which are available as separate upgrades for tradional Concord OV units: Stainless steel enclosure The ROV unit enclosure is fabricated from stainless steel which will not rust and corrode. The heavier stainless steel construcon also makes the enclosure more robust than previous aluminum enclosures so it will stand up to heavy use over me. Improved mist removal Built into the stainless steel ROV enclosure are 3 strategically- placed exhaust duct nozzles for more efficient mist removal, which results in a cleaner-running OV unit. Two nozzles are located at the top of the enclosure on either side of the contact area between the applicator roll and the mandrels where more mist is created. A third nozzle is located on the lower right of the enclosure near the fountain to collect the “rooster tail” mist from the gravure roll and the applicator roll. The mist exhaust nozzles are designed to not interfere with removal and installaon of the applicator roll. Stolle Concord DecoratorTechnical Update 1411-1

Stolle has developed a Reverse Over Varnish (ROV) unit for Concord 24 mandrel 8-color decorators that includes a number of features that improve performance and reduce maintenance time and costs. The main advantage of the ROV unit is that its design better controls and contains varnish mist. By positioning the gravure roll and fountain on the left side of the applicator roll instead of the right, the “rooster tail” misting from the gravure and applicator roll contact is directed downward into the enclosure’s lower pan rather than upward toward the print section. This redirection allows the mist to be more effectively contained and exhausted, which results in a cleaner-running OV unit which requires less maintenance. Following are details on the features of Stolle’s new ROV unit, several of which are available as separate upgrades for traditional Concord OV units:

Stainless steel enclosureThe ROV unit enclosure is fabricated from stainless steel which will not rust and corrode. The heavier stainless steel construction also makes the enclosure more robust than previous aluminum enclosures so it will stand up to heavy use over time.

Improved mist removalBuilt into the stainless steel ROV enclosure are 3 strategically-placed exhaust duct nozzles for more efficient mist removal, which results in a cleaner-running OV unit. Two nozzles are located at the top of the enclosure on either side of the contact area between the applicator roll and the mandrels where more mist is created. A third nozzle is located on the lower right of the enclosure near the fountain to collect the “rooster tail” mist from the gravure roll and the applicator roll. The mist exhaust nozzles are designed to not interfere with removal and installation of the applicator roll.

Keyless OV fountainThe new design varnish fountain features a large reservoir that reduces the chance the fountain will run dry. The fountain features a ¼” thick blade for minimum deflection, and no blade adjustment keys makes fountain set up easier and only needs to be done once. The new design fountain also facilitates application of more consistent film weights to the cans. This fountain design is also available for traditional over varnish units, as well as for Concord Basecoaters.

Two piece applicator rollThe new design 2-piece applicator roll makes it easier and less expensive to replace the roll when needed. Previous applicator rolls were a single unit that had to be completely removed and replaced. The new 2-piece roll unit has a new design hub that is installed once on the roll shaft, then the outer applicator roll can be easily changed on the hub, similar to changing a tire on a car. The rubber roll portion comes in many widths, all of which fit on the same hub. The 2-piece applicator roll is available on the new ROV unit, and is also available for traditional over varnish units.

In-line ROV driveThe Reverse Over Varnish unit features a new drive design that makes varnish overlap adjustments easier and more accurate, while eliminating mechanical components which reduces maintenance costs. A 7.5 HP vector drive motor with controls precisely follows the speed of the main decorator drive, and its speed can be easily controlled for simple and accurate overlap adjustments. The motor is bolted directly to the backside of the decorator frame and drives the applicator and gravure rolls with a simple shaft, belt and pulley, which eliminates the complex gearbox as well as the outside jack shaft, pulleys, belts and guarding and their associated maintenance.

For more information about the ROV unit as well as the individual component upgrades for traditional Concord OV units, please contact Tom Beebe at Stolle Centennial at +1 303-708-5141 or [email protected].

Stolle’s new Reverse Over Varnish unit is available on new Concord Decorators and as a retrofit package for existing machines. The retrofit package includes a new mounting weldment that repositions the air-vacuum solenoids for the mandrel section (can load, blowoff and missing can mandrel retract). This weldment includes lower steel air and vacuum lines that attach to the customer’s existing solenoids and air/vac flexible lines.
