EDITORIAL

First published in November 2014, the Review of European and National Elections offers a comprehensive, detailed and up-to-date overview on the composition of the European Parliament, national elections in all EU Member States as well as a historical overview on the now nearly forty years of direct elections to the European Parliament since 1979. The current edition, published in May 2019, is the sixth update since the May 2014 European elections, including and building up on the previous updates from July 2015, February 2016, July 2016, January 2017 and September 2018. The wealth of data assembled in this Review makes it an invaluable source of information and indeed a reference on the composition and development of the European Parliament and its political groups.

HOW THE COMPOSITION OF THE EP HAS CHANGED The present edition documents all changes in the composition of the European Parliament since the 2014 European elections. Of note is the creation of a new political group, Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF), on 15 June 2015, as well as the replacement of 110 MEPs who had left the European Parliament since the last European elections. The Review also tracks and documents the changing of political groups by ninety-six Members since November 2014. While at the constitutive session on 1 July 2014, the total number of MEPs included 277 women (36.88%), this figure slightly changed until 18 April 2019 to 273 female Members (36.40%). The European Parliament is composed, as of 18 April 2019, of 749 Members: 216 EPP, 185 S&D, 77 ECR, 69 ALDE, 52 GUE/NGL, 52 Greens/EFA, 42 EFDD, 36 ENF and 20 Non-Attached Members.

HOW THE NUMBER OF NATIONAL PARTIES IN THE EP HAS CHANGED Political developments in the Member States have also resulted in a change in the number of political parties represented by MEPs in the European Parliament. As of 18 April 2019, thirty-seven new parties entered in the European Parliament, with the total number of political parties represented rising to 219. Furthermore, during the whole legislature period, 25 political parties ceased to be represented. BG:

COMPARATIVE RESULTS PER COUNTRY The current update also covers some of the elections held in the Member States since the Constituent session on 1 July 2014. In the EU, there have been: - thirty-seven general elections BG (two elections), CZ, DK, DE, EE (two elections), IE, EL (two elections), ES (three elections), FR, HR (two elections), IT, CY, LV, LT, LU, HU, MT, NL, AT, PL, PT, RO, SI (two elections), SK, FI (two elections), SE (two elections) and UK (two elections); - fourteen presidential elections by direct universal suffrage (BG, CZ, IE, FR, HR, CY, AT (two elections), PL, PT, RO, SI, SK, FI). At the same time of the European elections 2019, other elections will be held in the Member States: - 24 May: Ireland, local elections - 26 May:

Belgium legislative and regional elections Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy and Malta regional elections Lithuania second round direct presidential election (first round will be on 12 May)
