Financial year2002 saw Groupsales growth set a new record.Therefore we see2003 as a year of consolidation.

Contracting remains the Grouppowerhouse. Our SA and NToperations did well and our WAand NSW operations also had

credible results. Unfortunately, one ortwo difficult projects in Victoria andQueensland affected those operations.

Engineering Services, including ourHigh Energy activities, performedwell throughout Australia and ourstrong growth continues in thisspecialised area.

Switchboards also saw formidablegrowth and positive results. With thecommencement of manufacturing inWA, we now have another businesswith national focus. Further growth

is predicted, especially with winningthe large Lucas Height Reactor project.

Data and Communications havemaintained market share in what canbest be described as a slow market.

The technologies market was moredifficult as the fall in discretionaryspending from recent world eventscontinues. It has been restructured tosuit the new market conditions.

Revenue Metering continued to lookforward to the outcome of full retailcontestability. Our new 26FRC, aimedat this market, has won major ordersand market share. It is poised toagain contribute to group results.

Recognising that our strength is our people, we have developed anMBA-style Nilsen ManagementProgram in conjunction with thehighly respected Melbourne BusinessSchool. The inaugural coursecomprises six modules and is beingundertaken by twenty-six senior

Nilsen people from all over Australia.We expect a like number to follow. Itis our investment in the future of Nilsen.

Our new vision, simply ‘To bepreferred,’ has been launched. I hopewe are working to be preferred in ourbusiness dealings with you. If ourWA operation second ‘Subcontractorof the year’ award (their excellenceawards are still to be decided); ourSA operation winning anotherexcellence award (and the SAperpetual award); and our Victorianoperation being a finalist in theawards are any indication, we aretrying hard to fulfil that vision.

2002 was also a year of restructuringthat has seen us exit some non-strategic markets where volumes andmargins became marginal.

Orders remain high and thegroundwork in 2002 puts the Groupin a strong position for the year ahead.

The Australian Wine Industry.A real success story.

If there has been a recent successstory for Australian industry, thiswould have to be it. Certainly ourcongratulations go out to thosevisionaries who have takenAustralian wine to the world, andmade many Australian brandshousehold names.

In our own way, we’ve also had alittle taste. And we’ve been pretty farafield. We have recently beeninvolved with wineries in theMargaret River area, Barossa Valley,

Padthaway area, Coonawarra region,the Riverland and the Yarra Valley.All have had the ‘Nilsen Touch’. Not a bad spread of varieties (or is itvarietals?) and regions!

But our involvement with winedoesn’t stop there! We’ve also workedon the chemical plants that make theraw materials for glass manufacture,the bottle plants, the wineries, thewarehousing, the restaurants and theNational Wine Museum. We’ve beeninvolved in most parts of the industry.

Transformers. They are the most criticallink in your power supply chain, yetare often the most overlooked!

We expect transformers to last 20 or30 years, often without any attention.While that is certainly possible, don’tbe surprised if all of a sudden you arefaced with having to make somehard, and possibly very expensivedecisions when it’s too late.

Most power transformers are oilfilled. Under normal operation, thetransformer oil is in contact withmany materials that have a catalyticeffect on its oxidisation, materialssuch as copper, paper insulation, steelin the tank etc. Moisture may alsoenter through cyclic breathing or

a failed seal, while internal shortcircuits and loose connectionsdegrade the insulating properties aswell. All this, if left unattended, canlead to catastrophic failure.

The repair of a substantialtransformer can cost anything from$50,000 to $150,000, and can alsoinvolve it being off line for weeks. Sothere is a real risk of weeks of loss offacility use. Therefore, doesn’t it makesense to keep an eye on them?

This is where the oil can help! The oilin a transformer can reflect thecondition of the transformer like theblood in our veins can tell of ourwellbeing, or otherwise. Transformeroil testing should be a vital part ofyour risk mitigating strategy. Takingand testing regular oil samplesclosely monitors the condition of atransformer. It is an economical wayto protect such a valuable asset. Anydeterioration in oil quality and anyimpurities found can be veryprofessionally investigated and thecause determined! This allows formaintenance planning well in

advance.

Oil analysis, coupled withthermography and regularinspection, are the key toextending transformer life.They are your earlywarning system. And wherethe result of oil analysisrecommends filtering,

Nilsen can do this at site. We havestreamliners (highly specialisedtransformer oil filters) on botheastern and western seaboards.

And if the transformer requires repairor replacement, again, we have theexpertise and facilities to do thisacross Australia.

With development and patternapproval of our 26FRC nowcomplete, the first test of its marketacceptability was in response to arecent Energy Australia tender.

Talk about a make or break test!Energy Australia is one of Australia’slargest purchasers of revenue metersand its selection processes are veryhighly respected throughout Australia.

The tender was for a two-yearsupply contract, with the optionof three, one-year extensions. Soit was of very great interest toworld-class manufacturers, aswell as Australian companies.

Well, we are extremely pleased toannounce, that after the pre-qualification process and the testingof all the different manufacturers’meters, our 26FRC was selected byEnergy Australia, as one of thesuccessful units. Our 26FRC will beused for all of Energy Australia’sdomestic installations with off-peakhot water or other fixed heating loads.

It is expected we will be supplyingsome 20,000 units per year for thecontract period.

Our 26FRC offers the following features:

Time of use metering.

Up to 640 days of 30 minute loadprofiling.

An RS232 port as standard.

Single or dual element metering.

Up to two load control relays.

An optional disconnect relay.

Import/export metering.

NSC Pattern approval.

The inner city areas of Melbourne,Sydney and Brisbane - what do theyall have in common? Lots of people?Lots of traffic? Of course! But that’snot all! Over the last decade or so,significant waterfront redevelopmentprojects have sprung up in and nearthe CBDs of these cities.

The legacy of our once flourishing shippingtrade, derelict wharfareas have for manyyears remained unusedand neglected. But notnow. These areas arenow valuable waterfrontproperty, being developedinto prestigiousapartments, often just ‘astone’s throw’ from thecity centre.

In Melbourne, YarraWaters Building 1, thefirst of a number ofapartment buildingsaround the docklandsredevelopment, is nowcomplete. It is a strikingbuilding of 31 levels. There are 176apartments and a whole floor isdevoted to recreational activities. It is a new landmark on the bank of the Yarra.

Tenant security is one of the appealsand of paramount importance inaccommodation of this type. So,developer Mirvac was eager to have ametering system that didn’t need ameter reader to access eachapartment, or even the building. Theywanted to read the 176 electricitymeters from elsewhere.

The most cost effective solution tomeet Mirvac’s requirement? NilsenMeterNet. Utility Powercor, hasselected Nilsen electronic meters withhalf hour load data storage facilities

to connect to the MeterNet system. And Nilsen did not only supply the system, weinstalled it as well! Again, partof our end-to-end solution.

And when the building isfully operational, all meterswill be read remotely fromPowercor’s offices in Geelong.

For more than 40 years, Nilsen havebeen regarded as a nationalSwitchboard supplier. We havedelivered equipment to many projectsacross Australia. From Darwin toHobart. From Sydney to Perth. Andmany places in between. During thattime we’ve also had our share ofoffshore and overseas projects. So, to improve our service levels tothose customers wanting highperformance and reliability backed by the largest team of switchboardexperts in Australia, we now have a Switchboard facility in the Perthmetropolitan area at our Bibra Lake premises.

As noted by Richard Slater, managerof our new WA Switchboard facilities,“This new initiative will not only

allow Nilsen to provide a morelocal, faster response service, thecombined capacity and experienceof all Nilsen SwitchboardDivisions will allow us to deliverthe largest projects withconfidence, and will provide WAcustomers, looking for highreliability and leading-edgedesigns with the same qualitychoices as those ‘Over East’.”

And as Richard also noted, “Theversatility and flexibility of our NSeries design continues to impressboth our own people and ourcustomers, and will prove in WA as it has elsewhere, to be preferred.”

Certainly, we believe our commitmentto building Switchboards in the Westis further indication of our confidencein the industry and confirms ourcommitment to being a majorAustralian Switchboard supplier.

To emphasise our position as a majorcommunication and data systeminstaller, our team recently completedthe Melbourne University I.T.Building, a key part of the MelbourneUniversity Square precinct.

As with many high performancesystems, this installation requiredstringent manufacturers’accreditation. For this application,Melbourne University chose a Panduitinstallation to their ‘CertificationPlus’ accreditation. The system isfully to Cat 6 standards, designed tooperate on full duplex protocols at200MHZ bandwidth.

For the technically minded, theproject featured bend radius controland cable management techniquesthat offered a choice of angledfaceplates with removable inserts foroutlet positions on ducts. Also usedwere innovative NetFrame open racksand aesthetically pleasing “closedstyle” horizontal cable minders, allhallmarks of Panduit’s world-leadingconnectivity solutions. The use ofBelden’s MediaTwist category 6 cablehas meant that the impressive results

of the bonded pair technologycomplement the Panduit Giga-TXsolution providing for long termreliability and performance.

The project comprised 3800 pointsover eight floors with 38 cabinets, 21LAN cabinets and almost 20 km offibre and copper cable.

As a major communications and datasystem installer, Nilsen recognise thatoften customers like to choose theirdata system equipment suppliers.Therefore, we hold accreditation forinstalling many systems to deliver ona wide variety of projects. Our list ofaccredited systems includes:

In each edition of our Review we try to show Nilsen landmarks in a particular State. Youmay recall in past editions we’ve featured projects from WA (New Maritime Museum andSwan Bells), Victoria (MCG and Myer Music Bowl) and SA (National Wine Centre andDame Roma Mitchell Performing Arts Centre).

This time it is New South Wales’ turn.

Stadium Australia, for Multiplex: Where we played a major rolein refurbishing the stadium formajor football codes (AFL andNRL). Owing to the differentspace and to get the spectatorsas near to the action aspossible, the side stands havebeen made mobile, noinsignificant feat given theyweigh 3000 tons each!

77 Pacific Highway, NorthSydney, for BaulderstoneHornibrook:A complete refurbishment of this NorthSydney building probably best knownfor the ‘LG’ neon sign placed atop it.The building consisted of 18 floors.Work included new facades andincreasing the floor plates to provideabout 25% extra floor space.

MLC Building, Sydney CBD:One of many major buildings in the Sydney CBD andmetropolitan area. Our Engineering Services team undertakeHigh-Energy servicing designed to ensure maximum lifeextension of electrical assets at minimal cost, especially whencompared to the cost of failure where interruption to building useand massive repair bills can add up to astronomical amounts.

Bruce Bellis: Joins our WA Switchboardteam as Supervisor. He brings to thecompany many years of experience in thisfield and is well known and respected bymany discerning switchboard users in WA.

Ray Buckley: Now heads up the VictorianContracting team as Division Manager. Rayjoins us with a strong background incontracting. He will be looking after allcontracting and traffic activities from theMelbourne base.

Rob Chanter: Rob has been with NilsenContracting WA in the role of Supervisor for some time. His talents in this positionwere certainly noted and he has now beenpromoted to Project Manager.

Michael Clarke: Joins Engineering ServicesSA as an Estimator/Supervisor for specialcommercial/industrial projects. Michael’sprevious experience as owner operator of hisown contracting business will be of benefit.

Tim Dodding: Tim has joined our Darwinteam where he has already been hard atwork as an Estimator. Tim has also workedfor Nilsen in our Brisbane office. Wewelcome Tim back to the top end to look for those orders.

Allan Hender: Joins the well established WA Service and Maintenance team asService Manager. Allan’s challenge; tofurther develop our general and specialisedservice activities to major Industrial andCommercial customers.

Stephen Honey: Is Business Manager for SA Switchboards and will be responsiblefor finding and (with the help of the SASwitchboards estimating team) convertingthat division’s opportunities into orders.

Brad Galvin: Brad will be working withTom Leitchman (our WA High-EnergyBusiness Development Manager) to promoteour exciting range of High-Energy services.No small challenge in a state the size of WA!

Rod Garrett: Joins the Contracting SADivision as an Estimator and providesadditional strength to the already successfulSA Contracting Estimating Team. Rod’s skills will further complement our diverse expertise.

Jim McCallum: Comes to us with a wealthof experience joining our NSW ContractingTeam as Estimator. Jim will be instrumentalin helping that division to develop our NSW business.

John Manning: Is the new CommunicationsSupervisor working with our fast growing,highly specialised team of data andcommunications technicians. John joins WA Contracting to deliver ourcommunications projects.

Brad Miller: Brad has joined our Bunburyteam to further develop our industrialactivities in the Greater South West area,which boasts a wide variety of medium andlarge industrial organisations. This shouldkeep Brad very busy.

Arthur Morris: Arthur joins our QueenslandContracting team as the new SeniorEstimator. Arthur brings with him extensiveindustrial and commercial experiencethroughout Queensland and he will behelping the division grow.

Jeff Owler: Joins Contracting SA asSupervisor. Having a wide range ofexperience, especially in the industrialarena, Jeff will be able to apply those skills to the wide range of work thatdivision undertakes.

Garry J Parker: Has been appointedBusiness Development Officer for WAContracting helping the team fill their orderbook. Garry held a similar position with theWA company and has been able to hit theground running.

Garry R Parker: Fills a very important roleas Contract Administrator with WAContracting. With his solid estimatingbackground and considerable time withNilsen, Garry’s experience will proveinvaluable in this new role.

Richard Slater: Joined Nilsen some time ago in another role. But with our WAswitchboard initiative, Richard will now beits Manager. Knowing what WA customers’switchboard needs are will be of greatbenefit in this new division.

Victoria Taylor: Victoria’s keyadministrative skills have been recognisedand this has led to a promotion to the keyposition of Projects Administrator in our WA Contracting Division. This will furtherstrengthen our project delivery.

Mark Wiesner: Takes on the mostdemanding role as our Victorian Contracting Support Manager. Mark will be working closely with Ray to ensureNilsen remains a major and well-respectedcontractor in Victoria.

Ken McKenzie: Joins our EngineeringServices Division in Queensland as theSpecialist Sales Engineer promoting theHigh Energy Service throughout the State. It is Ken’s task to keep the Queensland HighEnergy Team busy.

Kieran O’Neill: Kieran has been with ourvibrant Bunbury operation for some timeand has moved into the position of ProjectManager. From our Bunbury base, Kieranwill be responsible for much of our work inSouth West WA.

Paul Reilly: Has transferred from NilsenTechnologies to Nilsen Electric NSW tomanage our growing NSW EngineeringServices division. A small move but a majorstep, we welcome Paul to our specialist teamat Rydalmere.

Rory Sweeney: Joins our South Australiancompany as Manager OH&S Systems. Rory has a wide range of experience in the Construction Industry and will ensurethe emphasis we place on OHS issues is maintained.
