History of home delivery system

Food delivery services offer vital assistance to thousands if not millions of people in the country

and around the world. Essentially food delivery services are an important support system for

those that want help in ensuring they have well cooked, prepared meals delivered to their

door. But where does the service originate? And how does it help people on a day to day basis?

The first food delivery services started during the Second World War, particularly throughout

the Blitz where many homes were destroyed and large swathes of the population were left with

no kitchens in which to cook their meals. The idea was developed from the work of the

Women's Volunteer Service who had previously delivered meals to servicemen; transferring the

process to families that had lost their homes due to bombing raids.

Following the war the food delivery programmes developed by the Women's Volunteer Service

were continued. It is believed that the first use of the service occurred as early as 1947 in

Hemel Hempstead. At this stage, rather than the vans that are used today, the meals were

delivered using old prams. At this stage the meals that were being delivered were

predominantly pre cooked and kept warm. In the modern age most local councils have

developed similar services although predominantly councils now use frozen ready meals rather

than delivering hot food.

Whilst it was in the UK that the first food delivery networks were created the idea soon spread

around the world. In the United States the inaugural home delivery service for food was

created in Philadelphia. From 1954 onwards this service strived to feed those that were

housebound, ensuring that they received their quota of dietary requirements and would not go

hungry. The Philadelphia model was used across the country, first in Columbus and then New

York.

Australians were also quick to realize the benefits of food delivery services for the elderly. The

first service in this country was started in 1952, apparently delivered by a woman on a tricycle

before the Red Cross took over to ensure supply could meet the demand. Many other services

started throughout Australia, including one in Port Adelaide and Sydney. Today food delivery

programmes are well established and organized on regional basis.

Today food delivery services are well established in many different countries. Some still deliver

hot food whilst others deliver chilled and frozen variants. In some cases volunteers are still the

backbone of the service although many councils choose to pay their delivery drivers and chefs.

As well as council run operations a number of private sector companies have started delivering

frozen meals to people that may not necessarily meet the requirements for free meals

Decide whether to deliver restaurant meals, gourmet chef-prepared meals or both. Choose

your target market. A good example of a target market is corporate offices. You could

provide them with a lunch delivery service Monday through Friday.

Research online or look through the phone book to get a list of restaurants in your area.

Discuss your proposal with restaurant managers. Ask for menus and price lists to place

online. Agree on a commission for each meal delivered.

Contact several personal chefs in your area and discuss your proposal. Ask chefs to provide

you with menu and prices to place online. Add a commission to the price of each meal.

Fill out all required business registration forms with city, state and federal agencies.

Set up a website that allows customers to place orders online. Display menus and prices

online for easy ordering.

Generate a flat rate to charge customers for delivery service. Advertise the price online, on

menus and on flyers.

place of your own. If you decide to use your own kitchen as the preparation site, ensure that

it has sufficient space for refrigeration, proper stove tops, counters and a small office space

to process orders. Make sure to acquire the necessary permits for the kitchen. Ask your local

state offices regarding any additonal licensing that may be required for your kitchen.

Obtain a catering license. Before you begin your homecooked meal delivery service, you

must obtain a catering license. Contact your local government office to find out which state

agency is responsible for issuing a catering license. It could be the local health department

or a different food agency. Submit the application and wait for approval.

Familiarize yourself with the state regulations for hygiene, food handling, safety, liability

insurance, employee handling and management. You will be dealing with regular inspections

from the health department, so guarantee that your equipment, cleaning and processing

services meet their standards to avoid any penalties.

Develop meal plans for your customers. Narrow down your target audience, such as retired

senior citizens, college students or working adults. Create a menu that will cater to your

audience and appeal to them. Keep your management and preparation costs low in the

beginning by offering a simple menu. You will have to have a set plan of meals that you can

prepare and refrigerate in advance if possible.

Find chefs that will help you prepare your meals and work in the kitchen. You will need to file

for employee state licensing on their behalf. Visit the United States Personal Chef Association

(USPCA) website to find chefs.

Purchase catering equipment, packaging supplies, plates, cups, soap bowls, forks, spoons and

other items essential for your delivery service. Make sure that you meet the state regulations in

terms of labeling your meals. Please refer to the FDA's Food Labeling Guide.

Buy a reliable meal delivery vehicle that meets the state regulations. Consider hiring a driver to

deliver your meals or simply deliver them yourself in the beginning to cut costs.

Develop a marketing plan. You may decide to market your services to a larger area beyond the

local neighborhood. Use fliers, brochures and word-of-mouth to spread the news about your

new homecooked meal delivery service.

Create a database of all your current and prospective contacts. Send them menus and samples

of your meals, or call them and offer them special deals and discounts. Provide good quality

meals and maintain a friendly and reliable service.

Delivering Meal Plans and marketing

y  Insulated bags or carriers

y  Delivery truck

y  Website

y  Marketing materialy  Software for order taking and processing

Decide What Type of Meals to Provide. There are many types of meal delivery services. For

example, you can provide basic well-rounded meals, meals from restaurants, weight-loss

meals or gourmet meals. The meals you deliver will determine your target audience.

Decide how you will deliver the meals and the frequency of the delivery, i.e., daily or weekly.

If you do not have much capital, you may have to deliver the meals yourself. Otherwise, hire

someone to deliver the meals. This decision is contingent on your budget and thegeographical area you are targeting. If you hire someone to deliver meals, place help-

wanted advertisements for delivery personnel.

Decide how you will store the food before it is delivered. Special refrigeration equipment may

be needed, and government regulations may affect this. You may need order taking software,

insulated delivery bags or carriers, or an insulated truck..

Capitalize your business and decide how you will pay the start-up costs, either from your

savings or by taking out a loan. Start up costs will include telephone and computer

equipment, website setup and Internet expenses, refrigeration and insulation equipment, marketing, delivery costs and meal preparation.

Create a marketing plan once you have determined your target audience. Emphasize the

convenience, nutrition, and quality of your meals. Use such basic marketing materials as fliers

and business cards. Create and distribute menus with prices and delivery information. A

website is an effective way to reach your audience and take orders.

Decide what type of business entity to be, such as a sole proprietorship or limited liability

company. Incorporate or register your business, and apply for required permits and licenses.

A lawyer is useful to oversee this process.

Home food delivery services are nothing new, of course, particularly those who deliver

goods and packaged meals. Small scale businesses are actually catering to a new trend in

home food delivery services, particularly with merchants offering to sell only specific goods

like organically grown produce; and professional chefs and home based cooks offering home

meal delivery service.

Home delivery services are nothing new and there are many types that thrive in the market.

In fact some of them are paving the way for new markets, with the potential for further growth

and development. However, since the list for home delivery service is rather extensive, (from

furniture home deliver service to, home delivery pharmacy service, to restaurant home delivery

service, to pizza delivery, etc.) we will focus our discussion on only one emerging trend in the

home direct delivery service.

. We are however, focusing our attention to small scale businesses and micro entrepreneurs.

These businesses are actually catering (literally) to a new trend in home food delivery services.

Well, it is not really new, so to speak, but rather this delivery service is given a whole new

façade.

To back track a bit, some of the more common food delivery services include: goods and

packaged meals. Goods refer to: grocery home delivery service and home water delivery

service; while packaged meals refer to: lunch delivery or dinner delivery service and food home

delivery.

The home delivery express for goods delivery is evolving, with particular merchants offering

only specific goods to sell; organically grown produce, for example, is the basis for organic

home delivery service.

Another emerging trend that is seeing a lot more actions these days is the home meal delivery

service, particularly in personal chef delivery service category. Professional chefs are lending

their skills to the general public by actually establishing their own market like personal chef

home catering service, gourmet delivery for parties, gourmet vegetarian delivery service, and

gourmet based diet delivery service.

Smaller entrepreneurs, (particularly those not considered as professional chefs and are not in

the restaurant business,) are hitching a ride on this bandwagon by offering home cooking

services, with fresh delivery of milk and meals. This home meal service is particularly attractive

to certain groups of people who cannot cook for themselves like senior citizens or those

afflicted with illnesses.

Some people actually prefer home delivery foods, particularly home delivery dinners. The

service is the perfect way to end a long day for many home makers who want to skip the fast

food craze but still be able to feed his or her family home cooked meals. Besides, this home

dinner service is far cheaper than the delivery meals offered by professional chefs

In the restaurant delivery service you can start an independent delivery system which delivers

the food to customers without the restaurant having to keep more staff !

Page 10: review of litrature NIRAJ

Its a fact that people nowadays prefer to have food delivered to the home rather than dress up

and go out to a restaurant for dinner! Restaurants have woken up to the fact that no matter

how good your food is, sometimes people are just too tired to go out to eat! It pays off to have

a good food delivery system which will send food to the customer at a nominal fee.

How a t delivery system works!

You dont need to have a restaurant of your own. All you need to do is find all the

restaurants in your neighborhood that do not have a home delivery service but are

pretty popular with the people in the neighborhood.

You can even have your own food cooking in your home kitchen, print menus and then

deliver it from your home.

A food delivery service also needs a huge amount of organization to organize therestaurants and their menus.

You will have to have a strict inventory of when each restaurant has a peak time for

delivery and what the restaurants products are.

You will also need to take the orders, organize the orders with the restaurants and when

the delivery times are, and when and where to dispatch delivery drivers using the

shortest route.

Target areas where there are a large amount of people who will need meals delivered

like apartment blocks, office buildings etc.

You might need to hire two more boys with their own transport systems to deliver the

food to different localities.

You will also food insulation systems, brochures for advertisements, mobiles and faxsystems to get orders instantly and to record customers addresses and telephone

numbers for delivery.

Decide what fee you want to charge for your food delivery system. A few restaurants

offer a percentage of the food bill or you can ask for a flat fee. Either way, make sure it

is feasible to cover your delivery expenses and the fees of the staff you keep.

Choose a niche market where you are guaranteed customers like a gourmet meal

service or a diet meal plan where your customers require meals nearly everyday.

Try personal chef services where you can arrange a deal with the chef to prepare and

send out personal meals to all his clients. One good way to do this is to visit the UnitedStates Personal Chef Association website where you can find a gourmet chef with a set

of clients. On the websites main page, you have to click on the Find a Personal Chef"

link, put in your zip code, and then link up with them!

Small businesses are really important to the national economy, and these days, with the big

businesses taking some pretty significant blows in the economic crisis (see the news...any news

station), a lot of Americans are taking advantage of the opportunity to start up their own

business. The options are infinite, and as long as a person has the entrepreneurial spirit and is

willing to put hard work into a project, there is a good chance that a home business will be able

to flourish. One area where business is just about always good, if you're offering a good service, that is, is the food industry. Everybody needs a bite to eat, and the meal that people most

commonly eat out for is lunch, which makes selling lunches a good option when trying to start

up a business.

Some Things to Consider

Anybody considering preparing meals at home and running a meal delivery business will

first need to do some number crunching. Ask yourself the following:

How much do you have to put down immediately in this investment?

What size operation would you be looking to run?Do you live in an area with a big lunch-hour market, as in an area with lots of office

space?

What are the eating habits of the folks in your area?

This last point could make or break a workplace lunch delivery operation: if you're selling

burritos to hamburger-lovers, or vice versa, then you're going to fail as a business.

There is an incredibly informative article available at Restaurant.Org that discusses the

Page 12: review of litrature NIRAJ

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/review-of-litrature-niraj 12/14

average American's eating habits, and will shed light on some very important topics that

any person undertaking this operation should keep in mind.

Lastly, consider the logistical part of how you would make your meal delivery business

work:

Who would deliver? How many deliverers would you need?

What do you forecast for fuel costs and necessary times to get the work done?

Is your home kitchen equipped to take on the task?

Will you need to hire a cook, or can you take on the work yourself?

What kind of certification will you need from the local food inspector's office?

Get in touch with your local governmentgenerally the jurisdiction into which food

licensing fallsto discover more on this crucial prerequisite to starting this kind of business

up. Use this State Government Office Directory to find your local government office.

Choosing theMenu

According to the National Restaurant Association, Americans choose fruit first, then

hamburgers, then wraps as their favorite lunch time foods. A strange succession, but true.

Salads also have a distinctly strong presence in the lunch market, especially among women,

who are also more inclined to eat fruit for lunch. People today are doing more work on their

lunch hour, so they need practical food for lunch: something they can hold in one hand

while they flip through their agenda or Blackberry with the other. Hence the popularity of

the above items (discounting salad), which are so hand-friendly. Apparently, wraps are

popular in the cities, and regular old cold-cut sandwiches are more popular in rural areas.

Whatever the options, you need to make sure you're putting together a menu people aregoing to like:

You'll need to make it a little daring, but don't make all the options outlandish; just one

or two.

Furthermore, don't make your menu ridiculously long or complicated: you need to

streamline your business operation, which will probably be done out of your home

kitchen.

Offer a certain variety of breads or wraps, a certain selection of meats, and a few kinds

of vegetables and fruits.

Sauces are what you can really work on elaborating, with many varieties of aiolis and

other mayonnaise sauces being simple to put together, and easy to diversify.

Once you have your set of ingredients, it's really a matter of knowing how to put together

powerful combinations, and making it seem like each option has been thoroughly thought

through. Cover all your bases: a little carbohydrate, a little protein, a little fiber and vitamin-

rich fruit and/or vegetable.

Page 13: review of litrature NIRAJ

Packaging It

You need to be packaging your lunches properly. The standard old brown paper bag is a

classic and will never fail you, though styrofoam and plastic or cardboard containers are

also a good choice. Whatever it is, make sure it's in mass supply and dirt cheap (if you can,

try to get recyclable products, it's good for your image). Again, make sure that you'reoffering a comprehensive package: main item, small snack, and a drink as a bare minimum.

You need to wrap warm foods in aluminum to preserve the heat, and if you're offering

potentially messy meals (probably not the best idea, though somethings just never cease to

be popular) make sure to put in several napkins and or corresponding wrapping.

You can find a directory of packaging suppliers, at ThomasNet.

Choosing the Right Supplier

If you're going to be running a meal delivery business, make sure you're operating with a

business mentality and buy from wholesale suppliers, not retailers.

The difference in your budgetwillbe astronomical. Of course, when buying in bulk you need to make

sure you have the right storage facilities, and that you're buying the right kinds of foods (ones that

won't go bad too quickly)..

Marketing Lunch Delivery Business Effectively

In order to get paid to make and deliver lunches, you need to develop your clientele. This may

be a slow process at first, but if you're offering a good service and are in an area with a lot of

people needing to buy their lunch, then you should win over a good group of faithful before

too long.

Get creative with your marketing strategy:

Launch an email campaign.

Distribute flyers throughout the zone you're looking to work.

Get phone and fax numbers of local office branches to call them and leave faxes, preferably

with somebody higher up in the command chain.

Put a sign out in front of your house.

Even get your kids or family members to do a little word-of-mouth marketing for you.
