Two Types of Files

• Text file: • Contains only printable characters• Can be read by human directly• Slow

• Binary file: • Contains any characters. Never print

binary files directly• Read by human through related programs• Fast

• Programs are files: executable files.• Two types of files:

• Text file: contains only printable characters• Binary file: contains any characters

• Folders and files --- a tree structure• On the top: drive letters C:, D:,…• C: --- usually the hard drive with the system

installed: system drive• D: --- Usually the DVD/CD drive• A: B: --- Floppy disk drives if exist• E:, F:,…: Other drives such as USB drive

• A folder holds subfolders and files.• File name: name.extention

Text file: (by notepad): .txt Word file: old version .doc

Word 2010 .docx Executable files: .exe Web source file: .html, htm

• The file type determines the program used to open it: default programs

• Absolute path (full path) includes the drive letter:

C:\Program Files\Windows• Relative path: Its relative to the current

folder.

• Click the program:• Click the program icon if it is on the

Open a data file

• Click the data file and it will be opened by the associated program if its file type is known to the system.

• Click the associated program and use the Open command in the File tab.

• Right click the file and use the pop-up menu

• One can undelete a file if it’s still in the Recycle bin.
