PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN DAGG.
HOSPITAL.
Chicago, Illinois Children’s Hospital
The main objective of this semester was to provide Streeterville neighborhood with a children’s hospital. The form of the building was derived from early collages and regulating lines from the site both in plan and elevation. The concept of the towers was landed on in response to the height of the Women’s Hospital to the west and the Dental building to the east. As the project developed, the towers began to convey a relationship between the hurt and the healing. The notion that similar programmatic elements should be positioned next to each other and tight hallways should open up to large spaces dictated the experience of the building. Overall, this hospital pro-posal is intended to makes sense both functionally and pleasurably.

Rome, Itally Park by Torre De Conti
The main objective of this semester was to work collaboratively in a team of four to understand the neighborhood of Rome that includes the Roman Forum, the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Colesseum. Our goal was to design a park that would provide a more organized entrance to the ruins as well as a nice retreat at the cor-ner of two highly trafficked streets. My contribution consisted of a staircase design that allowed for views of the ruins and access to a proposed bridge connecting the visitors’ center across the street to our site.

Auburn, Alabama Lyceum
The main objective of this semester was to represent the academic colleges of Auburn and provide spaces for the various colleges to gather. My design intentions were to distinguish the fourteen dif-ferent colleges that make up Auburn University through a series of masses and voids. I stayed committed to the form of my original study model and assigned programmatic spaces to where they natu-rally belonged which resulted in a five-story interior atrium and a large rooftop terrace. Out of respect to the master plan of Auburn University, I found it important to stay within the context of buildings on campus and the proposed civilian walkways.

Montgomery, Alabama Natural History Museum
The main objective of this semester was to bring life to the riverwalk along the Alabama River in Montgomery by means of a natural his-tory museum. The building was to house educational spaces for field trip purposes as well as exhibit spaces and conference rooms. My design intentions were to provide a sculptural musuem that would be inviting from both the riverwalk and the river. Due to the content of the museum, my main focus was on the garden spaces and how the outdoors would make their way indoors.

Newbern, AL Rose Lee Turner’s Expandable House
The main objective of this semester was to work collaboratively to design an expandable home; meaning that our client, Rose Lee Turn-er, would be able to move into the main core of the house while the addition was under construction. Our semester began with a study of the local vernacular focusing on the use of porches in the area. We then interviewed Rose and began to incorporate her wants into our design through intensive charretting. Once a design was settled on, we got to work demolishing a barn in order to obtain recycled wood for the interior of the house. One of our big ideas was to have trusses that would make the room seem larger by both raising the roof and allowing in natural light.

Blakely, Georgia Fire Station
The main objective of this semester was to work collaboratively in a team of six to restore a sense of community to Blakely, Georgia’s courthouse square. Our intentions were to revitalize the square with a new theater, grocery store, library, bank, post office, and fire sta-tion. My particular contribution was in the redesign of their exist-ing fire station. After interviewing several residents of Blakely we realized that they were very hesitant to large scale change in fear that they might lose the small-town atmosphere. This led to very practical design decisions such as pull through garages for the fire engines and easy access from the sleeper rooms to the garage. A large part of the interior design focussed on bringing as much light in as possible. The fire station was meant to provide a sense of safe-ty to the community without being overly showy or iconic.

Birdhouses
The main objective of this semester was to work through the pro-cess of applying the essence of a living being to a common object in order to create a dynamic and inhabitable space. The first task was to build a bird house. After this we were required to letter a report about a bird, in my case, a loon bird. We used the research to create a bird+house, meaning that if the bird was to become a bird house this is what it would look like. The final task was to construct a bird watching tower that would encourage the activity of viewing birds.
