R ecently the question of why the Chamber moved out of the central business district of

Fort Bragg has resurfaced. I thought perhaps it would be a good topic torevisit.

As some of you know this was not a knee jerk reaction but based onmany factors.

This decision was partly based on theinterview that we had with the Ran-dall Travel Marketing representative

which indicated our former locationwas lacking adequate parking, interior space for the visi-ors and lack of visibility.

am pleased to let you know that our numbers are almost even

with the old location of walk-ins. As I once explained to themayor of Fort Bragg, the city manager, and others who ques-ioned our decision, the visitors do not walk here from Sacra-

mento, Chico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Ger-many, England, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, and so many other places, they drive into our area and they are delighted tohave a spacious lot to park in. The visitors who bike here fromCanada, or from the south, are delighted with our new bikeack, as well as the beautiful redwood picnic table. They are ableo relax and look over maps before deciding what to see next.

Visitors can take their time looking at brochures in our expand-d visitor center area and ask questions or collect information

quickly with referrals and be on their way to see our members.Another question came up regarding the Chamber leaving an-other vacant ofce space in the downtown Fort Bragg area. I

an assure you that we forwarded half a dozen inquiries about he space to the onsite manager and owner, as we were packing nd moving. They were able to rent the space quickly, so it was

only vacant for a short time during the rainy winter days, whenhere are typically less visitors in the area.

A few of our members originally felt that our move did not makeense, but after hearing the reasons we did it and now having

more parking space available downtown for the “shoppers”,

most agree it was the right thing to do.can’t tell you how many times people would walk into our old

ocation and complain that they couldn’t nd parking, they ouldn’t nd us and that we needed better signage. What we no-

ticed was that trafc merged in front of our location and vis were more concerned about not running into the car in frothem, than looking over to see where we were located.

Another point of interest is that the work that the Chamstaff and board does behind the scenes to promote our are

promote business, to help strengthen the local economy, pning the whale festivals, organizing travel writer Fam Toorganizing the 4th of July Parade, the reworks, and so mmore goes on whether we are in the CBD or not. The supfrom our members helps us continue this work. This bene

 businesses, members and non-members.

Our new location also gives us room to hold our new “12@Brown Bag Lunch Series” which is free for members and for non-members.

All in all this has been a good move for us that benetsmembers and visitors.
