Hugs and Kisses Series

This is a Hugs and Kisses Stitch Concept in the rows. The sister to this blanket which is more popu-lar is the wave version.

A straight row version was requested by several crocheters and an additional border was added that works for the straight across version only.

Revision 3February 7, 2021

The colouring is naturally coming out of the ball with the Caron Big Cakes but you can plan those co-lours if you wish for a unique and personalized look.

The planned colour above using Caron One Pound is using a colour scheme as follows:

Rows 1 and 9 = CreamRows 2 and 8 = Soft SageRows 3 and 7 = Soft Pink

Rows 4, 5 and 6 = Sky Blue

To change the size of the blanket:

Multiples of 6 + 4

The border is also adjustable which is noted in the border section.

The dc5tog stitches are always crocheted on the wrong side as they naturally pop out the opposite side of the work, in this case, right side.

InstructionsCh 118 or multiples of 6 + 4.

1st row: (WS) 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. 116 dc.

2nd row: (RS) Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn. 116 sc.

3rd row: Ch 3 (counts as DC here and throughout), *sk next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in skipped st; rep from * to end, 1 dc in last st. Turn. 57 x-st, 2 dc

4th row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn. 116 sc.

5th row: Ch 2 (does not count as st), 1 hdc in first 2 sts, *dc5tog in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts; rep from * to end. Turn. 38 bobbles, 78 hdc.

6th row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn. 116 sc.

7th row: Ch 3, *sk next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in skipped st; rep from * to end, 1 dc in last st. Turn. 57 x-st, 2 dc.

8th row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn. 116 sc.

9th row: Ch 3, 1 dc in each st across. 116 dc.

Repeat rows 2 to 9 until 81 rows are complete.

BorderThe border has to have a repeat established that can be easily done in the first round. The top and bottom edges already have the correct math to make it happen.

The sides have to be crocheted in multiples of 4 + 2. The + 2 is the corners.

Side edges should be counted 1, 2, 3, and 4. As you get close to the next corner, space out the last 1, 2, 3 and 4 before doing the corner. This will give you the counts you need that are the same as the top and bottom edge.

You will notice I placed red lines on the main body of the blanket. There are 4 stitches between those red lines. You will see the corners have 3 single crochet in them.

Though the diagram only shows the one edge, the same stitching pattern is happening on all four sides.

Jeanne used a stitch count of 4 stitches for the front post trebles that occur. This causes the edging to

have 1 extra stitch appearing at the start of each side. This is barely noticeable and if you never said anything to another person, they will most likely not even realize it.

Please note that you need to turn at th end of round 5 so that round 6 is being crocheted on the wrong side. This is intentional to make those dc5tog stitch-es pop out the front of the project.

If you prefer to improvise the border, by all means, go for it.

InstructionsBegin working in rounds.

1st rnd: Fasten on colour to 1st st of top edge with RS facing up. 2 sc in same st. 1 sc in each st across, 3 sc in last st. [Work edge evenly spacing sc counting 1, 2, 3 and 4. Ensure you finish with a 4] before doing the first st of the next corner with 3 sc. Work 1 sc across the bottom edge, 3 sc in last st. Rep [ ]. 1 sc in same starting st. Join with sl st.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in same beg st. 1 sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner (middle sc of a corner). 1 sc in beg st. Join with sl st.

3rd rnd: Rep border 2nd rnd.

4th rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in corner, sc in next 4 sts, [fptr 2 rows below and count 2 sts ahead, ch 1, fptr 2 rows below, fptr 2 rows below and 2 sts behind, 1 sc in next st], rep [ ] until 2 sts from corner, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in corner; rep for all 4 sides, 1 sc in beg st, sl st to beg sc. See diagram for clarity.

If you have to alter to fit by adding or decreasing a sc on any side, that’s fine. Don’t stress over stitch counts. This can be easily faked.

5th rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in corner, *1 sc in next 5 sts, *now working behind your crossed sts, [3 dc in cen-ter sc of round 3, 1 sc in next sc of round 4]; rep [ ] to corner, 3 sc in corner; rep from * all 4 sides. 1 sc in beg st, sl st to beg sc. Turn.

6th rnd: Ch 2, 3 hdc in corner, 1 hdc in next 5 sts, *dc5tog in next st, hdc in next 3 sts; rep to next corner, 1 hdc in last 4 sts before corner. 3 hdc in corner; rep all 4 sides, sl st to beg hdc. Turn.

7th rnd: Rep border 2nd rnd.

Fun Jeanne Facts• Jeanne’s favourite colour is blue. • Her patterns are heavily downloaded as she

has the pulse of the community for finding the right balance of repeating and stitchwork tex-tures within her project.

• Jeanne and Mikey compete, in a friendly way. Often sharing ideas and consulting.

Jeanne has since learned from this design of 2018 to not over complicate borders. If the project body has a lot of texture, keep it simple.

She would encourage you to follow your own path for the border and many people do already.

Rnd 1 needs a border that matches 4 + 2. Notice the red division line. There are 4 stitches between them. The corners are the + 2 per side.

TIP: I would count 1, 2, 3, 4 along the sides between the corners. Keep counting in sets of 4 and this will work.
