Throughout the month of July, La Antigua celebrates its patron saint, St. James (Santiago), with many activities and and a fair – with all the rides and attractions that make them so unique – in the city and the surrounding villages. To keep up with all the events, check out our calendar which starts on page 30. Also, on page 28 we’ll tell you about one of the most delicious activities happening this month: The Fifth Annual Sacatepéquez Gastronomic Festival.
Here at Qué Pasa, we’re also joining the celebrations with pictorial article that we put together with the help of the Mesoamerican Regional Research Center (CIRMA) and its superb photo library. It’s called La Antigua: Yesterday and Today, and we’re sure that you’ll enjoy the article’s beautiful and historic photographs. It starts on page 20.

Saludos una vez más, mis Fieles Lectores...
Este mes, quiero hablar de cultura. Existen varias definiciones de esta palabra, y la más general es “las ideas, las costumbres y el comportamiento social de un pueblo en particular o de una sociedad”. En otras palabras, cultura puede ser utilizada para diferenciar – de manera general – entre la vida cotidiana y el entorno social general de grupos distintos, por ejemplo, la cultura de Japón en contraste con la cultura de Egipto, o incluso para hablar de la cultura juvenil o la cultura de deportes.
Cultura también se puede definir (de una manera que puede causar que algunos de los socialistas más radicales entre nosotros empiecen a chisporrotear y predicar en contra del “elitismo”) como “la calidad de una persona o sociedad que surge de la preocupación con lo que se considera la excelencia en las artes, letras, costumbres y actividades académicas”. Para muchos, esta definición es lo que quieren decir cuando hablan de ópera, ballet, teatro, música orquestal, pinturas al óleo, etcétera. A las personas que disfrutan de estas actividades les gusta llamarse a sí mismos “cultos”.
Entonces, ¿Qué define a la “cultura guatemalteca”? ¿Es
la cultura agrícola y rural de la campiña que es por lo general económicamente precaria? ¿Es la cultura maya? Si es así, ¿cuál? ¿Kaqchikel? ¿Tz’utujil? ¿Es la cultura de los Mames o de los Garífunas de la costa del Caribe? ¿Es la cultura colonial española de La Antigua? ¿La cultura de la capital? Si sí, ¿Cuál? ¿La cultura de los que visitan galerías de arte y asisten a conciertos de música clásica? ¿La de la clase media tranquila que asiste a la iglesia regularmente? ¿La cultura de los vendedores en el mercado central? ¿La cultura skater de los jóvenes que se congregan en el centro? ¿La cultura de los fans del fútbol? ¿La de los artistas, músicos y bailarines del país?
Por supuesto, siempre va a haber problemas cuando se trate de hablar acerca de “la cultura” de un lugar multifacético como Guatemala. Y la situación se vuelve aún más problemática cuando las personas que utilizan de diferentes maneras la palabra cultura tratan de hablar entre sí.
Todo esto me lleva a un honor que ha sido otorgado a Guatemala. En el 2015, la Ciudad de Guatemala será la “Capital Cultural de Iberoamérica” del año. Cada año, la Unión Iberoamericana de Ciudades Capitales otorga el título a una diferente ciudad latinoamericana, y el próximo año es el turno de la Ciudad de
Guatemala.Si vamos a hablar de
cultura en el sentido de arte-música-teatro-danza, la joya de la corona de Guatemala es, sin lugar a dudas, el Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias. Este complejo único y exquisitamente hermoso, ubicado en una colina con vistas al centro de la Ciudad de Guatemala, fue diseñado por el célebre arquitecto, muralista, pintor y escultor guatemalteco Efraín Recinos, y lleva el nombre del autor guatemalteco ganador del Premio Nobel, Miguel Ángel Asturias.
En junio, sucedieron un par de cosas que han marcado las diferencias entre los distintos significados de cultura. En primer lugar, el 40º aniversario de la muerte de Miguel Ángel Asturias se pasa por alto y es prácticamente olvidado – incluso por el Ministerio de Cultura.
Pocos días después, se llevó a cabo un evento de “motocross urbano” en el centro de la Ciudad de Guatemala. Durante la carrera de motos, partes de las estructuras del Teatro Nacional – el Centro Cultural que lleva el nombre de Miguel Ángel Asturias – fueron dañados, y algunas áreas de los jardines que lo rodean se redujeron a surcos y pistas embarradas. Ha habido indignación general por tal maltrato de uno de los sitios del Patrimonio Histórico

This month, I want to talk about culture. There are several definitions of this word, and the most general is “the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society.” In other words, culture can be used to differentiate – in a general way – between the daily life and general social environment of distinct groups, say, the culture of Japan in contrast to the culture of Egypt, or even to talk about youth culture or sports culture.
Culture can also be defined (in a way that can cause some of the more radical socialists among us to begin to sputter and rage against “elitism”) as “the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellence in arts, letters, manners, and scholarly pursuits.” For many, this definition is what they mean when they talk about opera, ballet, theater, orchestral music, oil paintings, and so forth. The people who enjoy these pursuits like to call themselves “cultured.”
So, what defines “Guatemalan culture”? Is it the culture of the rural, agricultural, and generally economically precarious countryside? Is it Mayan culture? If so, which? Kaqchikel? Tz’utujil? Is it the culture of the Mam or of the Garífuna of the Caribbean coast? Is it the Spanish Colonial culture of La Antigua? The culture of the capital? If so, which one?

del país, y las diversas entidades involucradas – el Comité Organizador del evento, la Municipalidad, la administración del Centro Cultural – han tratado de quitarse la culpa y echársela los unos a los otros. Al cierre de esta columna, el Director del Centro Cultural ha sido suspendido y el Ministerio Público está investigando todo el lío.
Estos dos sucesos – el olvido del único guatemalteco ganador del Premio Nobel de Literatura y el daño al Teatro Nacional – destacan la naturaleza esquizofrénica de la apreciación cultural (en el sentido del arte-música-teatro-danza) en el país. Guatemala tiene inaceptablemente altos niveles de analfabetismo, pero incluso entre la población alfabetizada, estudio tras estudio ha demostrado que los chapines simplemente no tienden a leer por placer. Esto ayuda a explicar la amnesia y la actitud de “¿y qué?” acerca de Miguel
Ángel Asturias, el escritor. Pero el daño a Miguel Ángel Asturias, el Centro Cultural, provoca indignación.
Para mí, lo irónico es que estos dos eventos desafortunados ocurrieron menos de seis meses antes de que la Ciudad de Guatemala se convierta en la Capital Cultural de Iberoamérica. Guatemala cuenta con muchas culturas diferentes. Pero una queparece faltar es una cultura de LA cultura.
Bueno, es todo por este mes, my friends. Asegúrense de buscarme el próximo mes – a la misma bati-hora, mismo bati-canal – para más. Y para ustedes que se me quedaron hasta el final de esta columna, me disculpo por la falta de humor y de sátira este mes. El próximo mes haré mis mejores esfuerzos para llegar de nuevo a mi estado usual de malhumor y gruñosidad – leudado con humor.
The culture of those who visit art galleries and attend classical music concerts? That of the quiet, church-going middle class? The culture of the vendors at the mercado central? The skater culture of the young people who hang out downtown? The culture of fútbol fans? That of the country’s artists, musicians, and dancers?
Of course, there’s always going to be a problem when you try to talk about “the culture” of a multifaceted place like Guatemala. And the situation gets even stickier when people who use the word culture in different ways try to talk to each other.
All of this brings me to an honor which has been awarded to Guatemala. In 2015, Guatemala City will be the “Latin American Cultural Capital” of the year. The Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities awards the title each year to a different Latin American city, and next year it’s Guatemala City’s turn.
If we’re going to talk about culture in the art-music-theater-dance sense, then the crown jewel of Guatemala is, without a doubt, the Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias. This unique and exquisitely beautiful complex, located on a hilltop overlooking the center of Guatemala City, was designed by the celebrated Guatemalan architect, muralist, painter and sculptor Efraín Recinos, and was named for Guatemala’s Nobel Prize-winning author, Miguel Ángel Asturias.
In June, a couple of things happened that have thrown into stark relief the differences between the different meanings of culture. First, the 40th anniversary of the death of Miguel Ángel Asturias was overlooked and all but forgotten – even by the Ministry of Culture.
Then, just a few days later, an “urban motocross” event was held downtown in Guatemala City. During the motorcycle race, parts of the structures at the National Theater – the Cultural Center named for Miguel Ángel Asturias
– were damaged, and some areas of the gardens surrounding it were reduced to muddy tracks and ruts. There has been widespread outrage at this treatment of one of the country’s Historic Heritage sites, and the various entities involved – the event’s organizing committee, City Hall, the administration of the Cultural Center – have been falling all over themselves trying to point the finger of blame at each other. As of this column’s deadline, the Director of the Cultural Center has been suspended and the Ministerio Público is investigating the whole mess.
These two things – the forgetting of Guatemala’s only Nobel Prize winner for Literature and the damage to the National Theater – highlight the schizophrenic nature of cultural appreciation (in the art-music-theater-dance sense) in the country. Guatemala has unacceptably high levels of illiteracy, but even among the literate, study after study has shown that chapines just don’t tend to read for pleasure. This helps explain the amnesia and the “so what?” attitude about Miguel Ángel Asturias the writer. But the damage to Miguel Ángel Asturias, the Cultural Center, causes outrage.
To me, what’s ironic is that both of these unfortunate events happened less than six months before Guatemala City becomes the Cultural Capital of Latin America. Guatemala has many different cultures. But one that appears to be missing is a culture of Culture.

La Antigua Guatemala es conocida como la Ciudad Colonial. La Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, su nombre oficial, se desempeñó como la tercera sede de la capital de la Capitanía General de Guatemala (que incluía lo que hoy es parte del sur de México y Centroamérica) desde 1543 hasta que en 1776 se trasladó la sede del gobierno a la actual Ciudad de Guatemala. Debido a los pintorescos encantos de la ciudad – sus edificios históricos, calles empedradas y hermosas vistas de los volcanes cercanos y campiña circundante – La Antigua ha sido un imán para los fotógrafos desde que se inventó la fotografía. Las fotos del pasado nos permiten echar un vistazo a la vida cotidiana como lo fue hace mucho tiempo. También nos brinda la oportunidad de ver qué cambios se han producido en esta ciudad “atemporal”.

El complejo de la iglesia y el hospital, cuyas construcciones inician el año de 1654, es uno de los muchos edificios diseñados por el Arquitecto Maestro José de Porres. El hospital (a la derecha) fue fundado por frailes dominicos en 1663 y fue utilizado originalmente para atender a clérigos y otros trabajadores eclesiásticos. Hoy en día es administrado por frailes franciscanos y sirve como un centro social para los más necesitados, un hogar para adultos mayores y un lugar para el tratamiento de la niñez desnutrida y personas con discapacidades.
The church and hospital complex, constructed starting in 1654, is one of the many buildings designed by Master Architect José de Porres. The hospital (on the right) was founded by Dominican friars in 1663 and was originally used to care for clergy and other ecclesiastical workers. Today it is managed by Franciscan friars and serves as a social center for the needy, a shelter for the aged, and a place for treatment of malnourished children and the handicapped.

La antigua:Yesterday and today
La Antigua Guatemala is known as the Colonial City. The Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Saint James of the Knight of Guatemala, as the city is officially known, served as the third site of the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala (which included what is today parts of southern Mexico and Central America) from 1543 until the seat of government was moved to present-day Guatemala City in 1776. Because of the city’s picturesque charms – its historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and beautiful views of the nearby volcanoes and surrounding countryside – La Antigua has been a magnet for photographers since photography was invented. Photos from the past let us catch a glimpse of daily life as it was here long ago. It also affords us the opportunity to see what changes have taken place in this “timeless” city.
This month, in honor of the city’s birthday, Qué Pasa presents a window on the past: a few pictures from yesteryear, along with modern recreations of those photos.

El Arco, uno de los monumentos y símbolos más conocidos de La Antigua, fue construido en el siglo XVII, y originalmente conectó el Convento de Santa Catalina con una escuela. La torre del reloj en la parte superior se añadió en la era de la Federación Centroamericana, en la década de 1830.
The Arch, one of the most well-known landmarks and symbols of La Antigua, was built in the 17th century,and originally connected the Santa Catalina Convent to a school. The clock tower on top was added in the era of the Central American Federation, in the 1830s.
En 1618, la Hermandad de la Tercera Orden de Penitencia de San Francisco decidió tener iglesia propia y construyó esta ermita (ahora una iglesia) a 1,322 pasos de la Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande. El camino entre las iglesias tiene varias capillas marcando las Estaciones del Vía Crucis.
In 1618, the Brotherhood of the Third Order of Penance of San Francisco decided to have its own church and built this hermitage (now a church) 1,322 steps from the San Francisco El Grande Church. The route between the churches has several chapels which mark the Stations of the Cross.

¡Bienvenido! Vamos a ayudarte con algunas de las cosas que no deberías dejar de hacer mientras disfrutas de tu tiempo en La Antigua.
La comida del mercadoEn el Mercado Municipal encontrarás pequeños y rústicos comedores donde comer. Ya sea que te decidas a comer en uno de ellos o si prefieres caer ante la tentación de uno de los antojitos que venden en muchos de los pequeños puestos también dentro del mercado, esta es una buena forma de probar la sazón chapina. Pero una advertencia: esta es una actividad que no se recomienda mucho para los débiles de estómago.
Películas de Q10Música, películas de reciente estreno y todo lo que tu fanática persona desee están en una de las más concurridas entradas al mercado (en la esquina de la 4a Calle y la Calzada Santa Lucía). ¿Lo mejor (aparte del precio)? Los vendedores van a comprobar que los discos funcionan justo frente a tus ojos (y antes de que pagues).

Food at the marketAt the Municipal Market, you’ll find small, rustic dining rooms where you can eat. Whether you decide to eat at one of them or if you prefer to give in to temptation and nibble on of one of the snacks sold at many of the small stalls which are also located in the market, eating there a good way to try chapín flavors. But a warning: this is something that’s not highly recommended if you have an overly-sensitive stomach.
Q10 MoviesMusic, newly released movies and everything else a media fanatic like you could want can be found at one of the busiest entrances to the mercado (at the corner of 4a Calle and Calzada Santa Lucía). The best thing (besides the price)? Right before your eyes (and before you pay), the vendors will make sure that the discs work.
Move to the back, ma’am!The old school buses which have been rebuilt and redecorated and which will transport you from the La Antigua bus terminal to other places are known in English as chicken buses. For the price of a small fare, you will get “in touch” with many people, many bags and boxes, maybe some animals (hence the name “chicken bus”), and the everyday life of the city and its people who converge in these small, tight spaces.

With magical powers to relieve a hangover, they’re available made with different varieties of seafood at various small food cars throughout the streets of La Antigua and you can accompany them with a jazzed-up cerveza (beer) – part of the secret recipe includes lemon, salt, hot sauce, and tomato juice.

fifth annual edition of the Sacatepéquez Gastronomic Festival arrives this month. It includes the participation of many culinary virtuosos from the cities and villages of the departamento. Thanks to the efforts of the municipal government of Antigua Guatemala, the Sacatepéquez Committee for Sustainable Tourism, INTECAP, INGUAT, and the Cooperación Española (which is hosting the event), you can savor some of the most important dishes from the cuisine and culture of Guatemala. If you don’t want to miss the chance to try over 30 chapín delicacies – including sweets, beverages, and desserts, as well as dishes that have been officially designated as part of the Cultural and Historical Heritage of Guatemala – don’t forget to mark your calendar. ¿Qué han hecho?Gracias al internet nuestra canción “Fútbol” fue la canción oficial de una radio latina en Alemania para el mundial 2006 y también en el 2010 logramos hacer una gira de conciertos en Madrid, España. Hemos tocado en muchos conciertos y eventos en Guatemala. Ahora estamos enfocados en nuestro tercer disco que está en la fase final de grabación y que saldrá más o menos en agosto o septiembre. Estamos preparando
las fotos, chequeando nuestras expectativas y creando un plan para dar a conocer el disco.
¿Qué pueden esperar quienes van a sus conciertos?Mucha energía porque somos una banda latina y que hace Ska (de Jamaica). La combinación de nuestras influencias y la música que tocamos, además de las letras con sentido social que tenemos hace que la gente se divierta pero que piense en lo que decimos.

What have you been up to?Thanks to the internet our song “Football” was the official song for the World Cup 2006 in a Latin radio in Germany and in 2010 we did a concert tour in Madrid, Spain. We have performed in lots of concerts and events in Guatemala. Nowadays we are focused on our third album which is now in its final phase and will be ready in August or September. We are preparing the photos, checking
our expectations and creating a plan to publicize the album.
What can people expect when attending your con concerts? A lot of energy because we are a Latin band that makes Ska (from Jamaica). The combination of our influences, the music we play, and the letters with social meaning that we write results in people having fun yet thinking about what we sang.

Nueva York (Estados Unidos). Ha participado en diez exposiciones colectivas y siete de forma individual en siete países (incluyendo la que ahora presenta en Antigua Guatemala). La tecnología, la astronomía, la evolución y la naturaleza son influencias significativas para su trabajo. Todas las preguntas a las que probablemente no se encuentren respuestas, todo aquello que nos espera afuera, más allá de los límites visuales y que generan preguntas quedan plasmadas a través de su arte y de la interacción con el mismo. La curiosidad y el asombro, la luz y las sombras, los colores y el vasto universo se ven representados en sus obras.

Javier Barrios, a Mexican-Guatemalan born in 1979, grew up in Norway and studied art
at universities in Guanajuato (Mexico), Oslo (Norway) and New York (USA). He has participated in ten group and seven individual exhibitions in seven countries (including the one now being presented in Antigua Guatemala). Technology, astronomy, evolution, and nature are significant influences in his work. Questions without answers, everything that awaits us beyond visual boundaries and which generates uncertainties – these are reflected through his art and interaction with it. Curiosity and wonder, light and shadows, colors and the vast universe are all represented in his works.

Made of a corn dough (called the masa) mixed with tomato broth and filled with beef, pork or chicken, chuchitos are an intrinsic part of Guatemalan national cuisine. This traditional food is often served at celebrations or, even more commonly, fresh from the baskets of vendors who offer them throughout the city as a morning snack.

El capirucho es un juguete compuesto de un palo de madera unido por una cuerda a una figura de madera perforada. El objetivo del juego es, mediante movimientos de la mano y sin más ayuda que estos movimientos, incrustar el palo a la figura a través del agujero. Uno de los atractivos más grandes de este juguete es el costo y la posibilidad de fabricarlo en casa, pintarlo de colores brillantes y decorarlo al gusto.
A capirucho is a simple toy. It’s a relative of the cup-and-ball game. The Guatemalan version has a wooden stick attached by a string to a perforated wooden figure. The goal of the game is to get the figure to land over the end of the stick (with the stick through the perforation), using only the movement of the hand holding the stick. One of the great things about this toy is its low cost and the fact that you can easily make one at home, painting and decorating it to your own taste.

Un trompo es un objeto (generalmente de madera) que tiene la capacidad de girar sobre una punta. En Guatemala, se decoran con motivos alegóricos a celebraciones, eventos especiales, símbolos patrios o simplemente con colores vistosos para que puedan distinguirse y ser atractivos a los ojos de aquellos visitantes que estén buscando un souvenir que llevar a casa después de su visita. Son juguetes fáciles de transportar y sencillos, pero son entretenidos para chicos y grandes.
A trompo is known in English as a top. It’s an object (usually made of wood) that spins on its point. In Guatemala, they are usually decorated with allegorical designs of celebrations or special events, patriotic symbols, or just bright colors so that they’ll catch the eye of visitors looking for a souvenir to take back home. They’re simple and easy to transport, but they make entertaining toys for both children and adults.

Llamado originalmente Cerro del Manchén, este cerro es uno de los sitios turísticos de La Antigua por excelencia, y para poder llegar a la cruz y el mirador – que se observa desde algunas de las calles de la ciudad – deberás subir 333 gradas. El esfuerzo habrá valido la pena cuando estés arriba y te deleites con la vista a La Antigua y algunas aldeas circundantes. Si decides que quieres conocer un poco más, al subir por el camino natural que se ha formado, llegarás hacia una enorme estatua de Santiago Apóstol, patrón de la ciudad. Aunque la zona es generalmente segura para los turistas, aquellos a los que les gustaría subir acompañados por elementos de la Policía de Turismo pueden llamarlos al 7968-5303. [MAP A5]
Originally called Cerro del Manchén, this hill is one of the quintessential tourist spots of La Antigua, and to get to the cross and the overlook – which can been seen from some of the city’s streets – you must climb 333 steps. The effort will be worth it when you’re up there and you enjoy the views of La Antigua and some of the surrounding villages. If you decide you want to see a little bit more, by climbing up the natural path, you’ll come to a huge statue of Saint James, the city’s patron saint. Although the area is generally safe for tourists, those who would like to make the climb accompanied by members of the Tourist Police can call them at 7968-5303. [MAP A5]

Nimakaqapek. Hoy en día se le conoce como Mixco Viejo y es uno de los destinos ideales si estás planeando un viaje en Guatemala que puedas realizar en un día. Aunque no está muy lejos – está ubicado en el departamento de Chimaltenango – llegar a Mixco te tomará al menos dos horas y media si viajas desde La Antigua. Durante el trayecto hacia el lugar, disfrutarás de fantásticos paisajes y de montañas con abundante vegetación, además de las típicas estampas de la campiña.
Al llegar, podrás observar un mapa en relieve del sitio que va a permitirte conocer la disposición del complejo con una sola mirada. Una vez que recorras el sitio, te darás cuenta que las edificaciones presentan una textura única, bastante distinta a cualquier otro sitio arqueológico maya que hayas visitado antes gracias al estilo de construcción especial ideada por los Poqomames.
En cuanto a edificaciones se refiere, Mixco Viejo tiene 120 estructuras entre las cuales encontrarás una pirámide conocida como A1, además de un par de pirámides construidas en una misma plataforma que se conocen como B3. También hay varios paredones, dos campos de juego de pelota maya y una sola estela, algo que indica que la ciudad no tuvo muchos cambios de soberanos, porque las estelas usualmente se erigían para conmemorar los cambios de gobierno.
Aunque muchos de los marcadores (cabezas de monstruos en las paredes de los campos de juego de pelota) que existían en el lugar han sido reemplazados con réplicas para la conservación de los originales, el ambiente de la ciudad conserva el misticismo de haber sido una fortaleza que acogió a algunos de los más valientes guerreros de la historia Maya.
Built in the early 12th century, this site was the capital of the Poqomam kingdom and its name was Saqik’ajol Nimakaqapek.
Today it’s known as Mixco Viejo and is an ideal destination for a day trip. Although it’s not that far – it’s located in the department of Chimaltenango – getting to Mixco Viejo will take at least two hours if you travel from La Antigua. Along the way, you will be treated to fantastic mountain scenery and views of abundant vegetation in addition to typical postcard-like vistas of the countryside.
When you arrive, one of the first things you’ll see is a relief map of the site which will enable you to take in the layout of the complex at a single glance. As you wander through the site, you’ll probably notice that the structures have a unique texture, quite unlike any other Mayan archaeological site you may have visited before, thanks to the Poqomams’ special building style.
As far as buildings are concerned, Mixco Viejo has 120 structures, among which you’ll find a pyramid known as A1, plus a couple of pyramids built together on the same platform, known as B3 . There are also several walls, two courts used for the Mayan ball game, and one stele – which shows that the city did not change their rulers often, as steles were usually erected to commemorate changes in government administrations.
Although many of the markers (heads of monsters mounted in the walls of the ball game courts) that existed have been replaced with replicas in order to conserve the originals, the city’s mystic atmosphere of having been a fortress which housed some of the bravest warriors of Maya history still remains.

Este es uno de los calendarios mayas, conocido como la ronda Tzolk’in (o el Ciclo Sagrado), que tiene 20 días nombrados y 13 días contados. A cada día se le asigna un nombre en la serie y a cada día se le da un número de serie. Los 13 números y los 20 nombres forman un ciclo que se repite cada 260 días. Hay muchas teorías acerca de por qué los mayas hicieron un calendario con solo 260 días. This is one of the Mayan calendars, known as the Tzolk’in Calendar Round (or Sacred Cycle) which has 20 named days and 13 numbered days. Each day is assigned a name in succession and each day is given a number in succession (much as the Western calendar numbers the days of the month). The 13 numbers and 20 names form a cycle which repeats itself every 260 days. There are many theories about why the Maya made a calendar with only 260 days. Some of those theories include that 260 is 13 times 20, both symbolically important numbers to the Maya; that it’s the approximate time of human gestation; or that it’s the cycle of the planet Venus in the night sky.

en el 2005, varios ciudadanos holandeses decidieron trabajar unidos para apoyar y encontrar soluciones a las problemáticas que viven a diario los
niños y padres de esta comunidad y cantones aledaños y fundaron la Asociación Caras Alegres.
A través de diversos proyectos, la asociación se enfocan en dos grupos específicamente: madres solteras y niños. Para esto, cuentan con una guardería donde brindan cuidado y alimentación a niños desde los 3 meses hasta los 3 años (mientras sus madres estudian o trabajan) y enseñan los grados de kinder y párvulos (donde preparan a los niños de entre 3 y 6 años para asistir a la primaria).
Uno de sus proyectos, “Caras Alegres Tarde”, acoge tres veces por semana a niños que necesiten hacer tareas (ofreciendo computadoras como recurso educativo) y
a aquellos que necesiten un espacio para jugar. Otro, llamado CALI – Camino A La Independencia – proporciona becas a madres de familia para que terminen la primaria y puedan continuar con estudios a nivel básico y diversificado, además de recibir capacitación técnica en áreas como repostería, corte y confección, bordado y pintura. A través de estos y de su programa de alfabetización (avalado por CONALFA – el Comité Nacional de Alfabetización) para madres y padres de familia, Caras Alegres espera poder brindar herramientas a esta comunidad para un futuro mejor de la mano de la educación.
Aunque el mayor porcentaje de ayuda económica y educativa proviene de voluntarios
extranjeros a través de donaciones, es bienvenida toda la ayuda que se puede brindar a la asociación para llevar a cabo los diferentes proyectos.

the community of Las Rosas in Quetzaltenango is one of many communities in the country with
alarming rates of poverty and child malnutrition.
In 2005, a number of Dutch citizens decided to help the children and parents of this community and the surrounding villages by working together to find solutions to their daily problems: they founded Asociación Caras Alegres (the Cheerful Faces Association).
Through various projects, the association specifically focuses on two groups: single mothers and children. They have a nursery where care and food is provided to children from 3 months to 3 years of age (while their mothers work or study) and they teach pre-kindergarten and kindergarten (to prepare children between 3 and 6 years old so they’ll be ready to attend primary school).
One of their projects, “Caras Alegres Tarde” or “Cheerful Afternoon Faces,” is held three times a week, and helps children with their homework (and offers computers as an educational resource) as well as providing a place
for the kids to play. Another, called CALI – an acronym for “Camino A La Independencia” or “Path To Independence” – provides scholarships for mothers so that they can complete their primary schooling and continue their studies at the middle-school and high-school levels, as well as receive technical training in areas such as baking, sewing, embroidery, and painting. Through these projects and its literacy program (which is supported by CONALFA – the Guatemalan National Literacy Committee) for mothers and fathers, Caras Alegres hopes to provide tools to the community for a better future through education.
Although the largest share of economic and educational aid comes from foreign volunteers through donations, any assistance to help the association undertake these different projects is welcome.

- “Abuelo, ¿por qué paramos?”- “Porque va a pasar el tren, mijo.”
Momentos después, el tren pasó frente a nosotros y así fue como vi por primera y única vez, el tren en movimiento pasar frente a mí.
¡Qué maravillosa experiencia! Esto fue hace ya casi 20 años y, hoy en día, uno de los lugares donde puedes ver esos “caballos de acero” es el Museo del Ferrocarril que abrió sus puertas en el año 2004 en la Ciudad de Guatemala.
Hoy, vamos en un pequeño viaje por este museo. Comenzamos en la taquilla, donde pagamos Q2 cada uno por el derecho de entrada. Luego, un “maquinista” recibirá los boletos y nos invitará a dejar nuestras pertenencias en unos cajones de madera. (Al observarlos detenidamente, el pasar de los años es obvio.)
Lo primero que verás serán las imponentes locomotoras de vapor que se encuentran en el pasillo de carga de pasajeros – es imposible no notar la “No. 204” y la “No. 205” – otras locomotoras de diesel y algunos vagones, entre ellos el “Motagua” y el “Michatoya”, que fueron utilizados por miembros ejecutivos de la IRCA – International Railways of Central America – y Presidentes de la República en turno.
Caminando un poco a la izquierda, encontrarás la antigua taquilla, por donde miles de viajeros de todo el mundo decidían su destino y compraban su boleto. Está ambientada con el mismo mobiliario y equipo que se utilizaban en la “época de oro” del tren guatemalteco. ¡Incluso tienen boletos auténticos! Pero tristemente, el taquillero no te dará ninguno porque todo está como congelado en el tiempo.
Al seguir por el pasillo de carga de pasajeros, encontrarás la entrada a los salones con la exposición permanente donde está en exhibición todo lo relacionado con la
historia del ferrocarril guatemalteco. Al entrar, podrás observar una serie de artilugios utilizados desde los primeros días de la historia del ferrocarril en Guatemala hasta su cierre, y verás fotografías de los ex trabajadores de FEGUA (Ferrocarriles de Guatemala), quienes son considerados verdaderos héroes del desarrollo nacional.
El letrero que dice “Prohibido el paso a particulares” estuvo colocado (junto con otros más) en la antigua estación de Pamplona, cerca de donde comienza el Boulevard Liberación y en donde hoy en día hay vestigios de una vía en forma de “Y”. En la época en que funcionaba el ferrocarril, esta vía servía para que las “Caimanas” – como se les llamaba a las locomotoras de doble eje, tan pesadas que se destinaron a tramos relativamente planos – dieran la vuelta.
En el museo se ha acondicionado uno de los vagones de carga que se utilizó hace años para que puedas interactuar con el equipo de la época. Al salir del vagón, encontrarás la clásica señalización de fondo rojo y letras blancas: “Alto, Mire, Oiga” ¿Cuántos accidentes pudieran haber sido evitados al seguir estas simples instrucciones?
Hace algún tiempo te habrías encontrado frente a frente con una preciosa maqueta a escala HO, construida por un grupo de amantes del ferromodelismo en la que era fácil tener una idea más clara de cómo era el ferrocarril, pero ésta ha sido guardada y es probable, lastimosamente, que las futuras generaciones tendrán que esperar varios años antes de poder ver un tren en circulación, incluso uno a escala.
Como ocurre con la mayoría de las aventuras, esta llega a su fin con el momento de partir. Probablemente de regreso a casa pienses cómo sería escuchar a estos “caballos de acero” funcionando a toda potencia y qué se sentiría recorrer a bordo de uno de ellos los parajes de nuestra bella Guatemala. Ya sea por los recuerdos que puede traerte, por el amor al hierro y al diseño, o porque consideres que es un símbolo importante de una época significativa para el país, seguramente este museo va a dejarte una sonrisa en el rostro y en el alma.

Moments later, the train did indeed pass by, and that’s how I saw a moving train
go directly in front of me for the first and only time. What a wonderful experience! This was nearly 20 years ago, and today one of the only places you can see these “iron horses” is the Museo del Ferrocarril (Railroad Museum) which opened its doors in 2004 in Guatemala City.
Today we’re going on a short trip through the museum. We start at the box office, where we each pay an entrance fee of Q2. Then an “engineer” will take the tickets and invite us to leave our belongings in wooden drawers. (If you look at them closely, their age is quite obvious.)
The first thing you’ll see will be the imposing steam locomotives that are in the passenger boarding area – it’s impossible not miss the “No. 204” and the “No. 205” – other diesel locomotives and some passenger cars, including the “Motagua” and the “Michatoya” which were used by executives of the IRCA – International Railways of Central America – and in turn, by various Guatemalan Presidents.
Walk a little to the left and you’ll find the old ticket office where thousands of travelers from around the world decided where they were going and bought their tickets. The ticket office is outfitted with the same furniture and equipment that were used during the golden age of Guatemalan train travel. There are even authentic tickets! But sadly, the box office attendant won’t give you one, because everything is as if it were frozen in time.
Moving along the passenger boarding area, you’ll find the entrance to the permanent exhibition halls which house displays about the history of railroads in Guatemala. Upon entering, you will find a number of gadgets that were used from the early days of railroading in Guatemala until the closing of the industry, and you’ll
see pictures of former FEGUA workers who are considered true heroes of national development. (Railways of Guatemala – Ferrocarriles de Guatemala – is known by its acronym in Spanish as FEGUA.)
The sign that says “Prohibido el paso a particulares” (“Public entry prohibited”) was located (along with others) in the old Pamplona train station, near the point where Boulevard Liberación begins and where today there are remnants of a Y-shaped road. During the period when the railroad was running, this route was used to turn around the “Caimanas” – the “Crocodiles,” as the double-axle locomotives were called – which were so heavy that they could only run on relatively flat sections of track.
In the museum, one of the freight cars that were used years ago has been reconditioned so that you can interact with the equipment of the era. When you leave the freight car, you’ll see a classic sign with a red background and white letters: “Alto, Mire, Oiga” (Stop, Look, Listen). How many accidents could have been avoided by following these simple instructions?
Some time ago, you would have come face to face with a beautiful, HO-scale model which was built by a group of model railroad enthusiasts and made it easy for everyone to get a clearer idea of what the railroad was like, but it has been put into storage, and it’s probable, unfortunately, that future generations will have to wait several years before they can see trains in motion, including scale-model ones
As with most adventures, this one has come to an end, and it’s time to depart. Back home, you’ll probably think of how it would be to hear these “iron horses” running at full power and what it was like to travel on one of them around the beautiful land that is Guatemala. Whether if it’s for the memories, for the love of iron and design, or because you consider it an important symbol of a significant era for the country, this museum will surely leave you with a smile on your face and in your heart.
