Rally
In our everyday life, we come face to face with situations of
varying levels of difficulty. It is up to us to decide how we
are going to deal with such challenges. Well, okay, maybe
we do not always choose the right path, but living is an art
and it is important for us to be prepared. This is one of the
lessons we can learn from adventure sports such as car
rallies where competitors need to have grit, persistence and
concentration since limits are tested at every twist and turn.
In order to win this contest, the participants need to, above
all, not to be afraid of what is new, since the unexpected can
and does happen, requiring quick decision-making and
precise movements. The result of all this effort is much
enjoyment. In the case of producer and pilot João Antonio
Franciosi, the highlight of this edition, the reward is victory.
The winner, furthermore, wins an even better prize: a
feeling of personal achievement that comes from knowing
that you are capable of going beyond what is expected...
This is how we identify champions!
In life we must do the same: we must exceed ourselves
every day. For this reason, this edition of FMC Square is
dedicated to the many champions we have in Brazilian
agriculture.
caso do produtor e piloto João Antonio Franciosi, nosso

By gosh! We all know that agribusiness is cyclical. But, despite this fact, will we
join the chorus of those who complain and are unable to find solutions?
Obviously, the answer is NO!
Without losing our sense of reality, we must understand that agribusiness is
going through, a difficult adjustment period for many of us. This situation will
continue for some time. However, we should be confident that our sector will
reemerge newly invigorated in 2008.
This new Age of Prosperity will come from more careful and efficient
management of on-farm resources and of a substantial improvement the prices
of commodities related or not to biofuels.
In the midst of all the uproar due to low profitability, or even the lack of it, in
the soybean and corn business, it is a good sign to see our best agribusiness
leaders reducing costs, rationalizing areas and processes, investing in biodiesel
units and delving into cash flow analysis. On the other hand, the map of world
production and demand will drastically change within the next five years.
Sugarcane area will expand here in Brazil and in other producing nations. The use
of corn in the United States for ethanol will not only increase the price of this
important grain in world markets, but will also occupy soybean areas in the United
States and influence the global supply of both commodities.
Food consumption will continue to grow and, along with it, the demand for soybean,
corn, wheat and rice, thus creating a broad market and room for price recovery.
Let's turn this tide of negativity.
Let's think positive... Let's search for solutions and prepare ourselves for this new age
in an efficient, competitive and cautious manner.
After all, “The best is yet to come!!”.

Getting rid of bad companyChemical control is the only efficient method to
eliminate the nutsedge problem, one of the main villains
responsible for the reduction of productivity in sugarcane
plantations
utsedge (Cyperus spp.) is one of the least desirable
companions for sugarcane, yet it has almost always
been present in sugarcane plantations since its arrival Nfrom the Ganges Valley in India. In the Americas, both
sugarcane and nutsedge were introduced by Christopher
Columbus in 1493. Today, this invading plant infests over 100
sugarcane producing countries, including Brazil where it is
present in close to 50% of arable land. Nutsedge is one of the
main villains in the fight against productivity reduction in
sugarcane plantations.
Sugarcane today is one of Brazil's main crops, with consistent
record-breaking harvests. In a recent survey conducted by
Conab (National Council of Supply), the 2006/07 harvest is
estimated at 471,170,000 tons, 9.2% higher than the previous
harvest which came in at 431,410,000 tons. According to the
survey, this growth is thanks to an increase of 321,500 hectares
(5.5%) in harvested area and an increase of 2,599 kg/ha
(3.5%) in average productivity as a result of investments in
technology and new mills. These investments reflect the good
prices obtained by sugarcane-derived products in domestic and
international markets.
The increase in productivity is closely related to a series of
conditions, ranging from the choice of the most appropriate
sugarcane variety for the edaphic-climatic conditions of a
specific region to the choice of products that need to be used for
controlling pests and weeds, such as nutsedge (Cyperus spp.).
These weeds have a number of competitive advantages over
sugarcane. One of them is initial fast growth, which leads to a
greater competitive control over mineral and water resources of
the soil. Another advantage is their capacity to disseminate
rapidly through tubers, the main propagating units of this type
of weed. Tubers are produced at a rate of one every two days
and can reach density rates of up to 3,000 tubers per square
meter and approximately 2,000 plants per square meter.
Other than competing for soil resources, nutsedge also causes
another effect that is just as or even more harmful: the
allelopathic effect. This phenomenon consists of the elimination
by nutsedge of compounds that inhibit sprouting and growth of
sugarcane. This may lead to a 30% reduction in number of
plants per meter in the field.
Chemical control is the only efficient method to eliminate the
nutsedge problem, because after being weeded, nutsedge can
grow 1 to 3 centimeters a day. This is why nutsedge is
nicknamed “see you tomorrow” in certain regions of Brazil.
Nutsedge control cannot be restricted to the aerial part of the
plant because, as previously mentioned, the tubers are
responsible for disseminating the weed. Products need to act on
the tuber patch and not only reduce the weed population, but
also eliminate its important propagation tool.

Mill achieves over 95% reduction
Currently, the main molecule used for controlling
nutsedge in sugarcane is Sulfentrazone, sold in Brazil
under the name Boral 500 SC. Introduced in the
sugarcane market in 1997, Boral quickly became a
standard weapon in the fight against nutsedge thanks
to its solid performance in reducing tuber patches in
the soil. In some cases, more than 95% of patches
were reduced in three years of use. This result was
proven by a five-year study conducted in a mill
located in the region of Iracemápolis in São Paulo
state where 16 points were marked with GPS in a plot
and Boral was applied to the plants and on the two
following stubbles. The visual results can be
compared as shown in figure 1:

The plant control visual results were also very satisfactory
thanks to the excellent control of the tuber patch provided by
this application method, as can be seen in the treatment photos
shown below:
At the end of 2005, important mills in the state of São Paulo joined
in the development of a new method of using Boral for nutsedge
control. This new method consists of one application prior to
planting sugarcane and another one following the planting, aiming
for fast disinfestation results. The initial results were highly
positive, demonstrating there a strong reduction in the tuber
patch, at much higher rate than obtained with the previously used
pre-planting disinfestation treatment. As can be seen in graph 1 a
greater amount of tillers is obtained by using the glyphosate
treatment, but it is important to keep in mind that glyphosate
does not have the same effectiveness in reducing tuber patches
(graph 2), which is essential to guarantee the productive potential
of sugarcane.

Velocidade de desinfestação;
Alta eficácia do programa de desinfestação rápida aliada à alta seletividade do Boral à cana-de-açúcar;
Flexibilidade de uso, não tendo limitação de tempo entre a aplicação em pré-plantio e a aplicação em pós-plantio;
Redução do banco de tubérculos de tiririca e do banco de sementes de outras invasoras (folhas largas e gramíneas);
The main benefits of this application method
are as follows:
Speed of disinfestation;
High efficiency of rapid disinfestation program together
with Boral's high selectivity for sugarcane;
Flexibility in use, no time limitation between pre-
planting application and post-planting application;
Reduction of tuber patches and seed patches of other
invaders (broadleaf and grasses);
Avoid losses caused by nutsedge through allelopathy

he cotton crops in Brazil are predominantly planted
in the areas of the Cerrado and the West of Bahia.
The States of Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and TGoiás, responsible for most of the domestic production,
present very serious problems with nematodes,
pathogens distributed in all of the cotton-producing
regions, distinguishing themselves merely in terms of the
species that is predominant in each area.
The main nematodes that occur with the greatest
frequency in cotton in Brazil are: Meloidogyne incognita
races 3 and 4 (gall nematode); Rotylenchulus reniformis
(reniform nematode); and Pratylenchus brachyurus (root
lesion nematode). The risk potential of these phytonema-
todes increases even more, as they are also parasites for
a wide range of hosts, including soybeans and maize.
Depending on the population density, any of these could
cause great losses in cotton. Therefore, the nematodes
have become the cause of damage in cotton plants, when
during an inadequate management of the property, their
population overcomes the limits to crop harm. In Brazil,
there are high percentages of samples with the M.
incognita population (gall nematode) and R. reniformis
(reniform nematode) above damage levels.

The gall or branch nematode and the reniform nematode were responsible for large losses in the States of São Paulo and
Paraná, but so far are not a reason for concern in Mato Grosso, probably as their occurrence is limited and circumscri-
bed. Surveys carried out in that State showed that only 4% of the 623 samples collected presented M. incognita, in
contrast with the 94% of frequency of the nematode for root lesions (Silva et al., 2003). The scenario in the State of
Mato Grosso do Sul shows an expressive presence of nematodes in branches and the reniform nematode, with a
predominance of the lesion nematode (29%, 19% and 59% frequency of M. incognita, R. reniformis and P. brachyurus,
respectively, in 104 samples) (Comunello and Asmus, 2003).
The reniform nematode occurs in high population densities in the municipalities of this state, that is responsible for
29% of the area planted with soybeans. In the State of Mato Grosso do Sul (in the localities of Chapadão do Sul, Costa
Rica and São Gabriel do Oeste) high frequencies of occurrence were observed with P. brachyurus (respectively, 82%,
79% and 87%), but in low populations (Asmus, 2003).
Pratylenchus brachyurus is a cotton plant parasite that has been studied little and its importance as a pathogen in
cotton plants is still being debated, probably because it causes damage only in high population densities. In experi-
ments in a vegetation house or structure, initial populations of 16.000 to 27.000 nematodes per plant were needed to
significantly reduce the growth of the cotton plant (Inomoto et al., 2001; Star; Mathieson, 1985). The scanty
information in the field available about the pathological systems of cotton/P. brachyurus summarize the few works of
the last 40 years, with an emphasis on those of Lordello and Arruda (1957) and Ferraz and Lordello (1961), that
reported the occurrence of the lesion nematode in cotton plantations in Ribeirão Preto, Campinas, Laranjal Paulista and
Presidente Prudente, municipalities of the State of São Paulo. At that time, the authors attributed the cause of the
premature decline of cotton plants to the nematode, as these plants had deficient root systems, symptoms of
nutritional deficiency and under-development in general in the aerial part. Later, Lordello (1986) called this situation
"Pratylenchus Brachyurus or the creeper disease". In the last 40 years, interest in studies of P. brachyurus as a parasite
for cotton has decreased, however, input for an adequate control of this parasite is necessary in our present days, due
to the high rate of occurrence of this nematode in cotton crops of Brazil.

Controle

Planning the reactionIn areas contaminated by nematodes, when there activities are
diversified on the property, such as a rotation of crop and integrated
crop-husbandry, nematodes remain in population densities below
damage level. On the other hand, if these actions are unable to avoid
having nematodes attain high populations, the return to low
populations will be slow and may require measures that will limit the
profitability of the area. For a better control of such contamination, be
alert in terms of the symptoms and signs of dissemination and, plan
and react in this way.
The symptoms of the Meloidogyne incognita attack are the formation
of branches in the root system. The galls or branches are enlarge-
ments that alter the root diameter and are normally found in a
greater number in secondary roots, but can nevertheless be found in
smaller quantities in the main root. This characteristic is important to
be able to diagnose the problem on the field, as, by pulling out plants
without the help of tools (mattock hoe), the fine roots break off and
remain in the soil, making it impossible to detect the galls or
branches (Abrão and Mazzafera, 1998). Roots of the cotton plant
infected by Rotylenchulus reniformis and Pratylenchus brachyurus do
not present galls.
Parasitism of Meloidogyne incognita, as that of Rotylenchulus
reniformis and Pratylenchus brachyurus, lead to a reduction in the
transport of water and other nutrients to the aerial plant, causing
symptoms of water and nutritional deficiency, a reduction in size,
drop of production, among others. A type of yellow swarm of flies is
caused, distributed by the foliar limbo, in contrast with the slightly
light red. These yellowish areas then turn to brown, and finally dry
up. This symptom is known as “Gossypium hirsutum”.

Control• Fallowing with successive plowing, removal out and elimination of
the crop residues: for the three phytonematodes this is an efficient
control practice, mainly for P. brachyurus.
• Resistant cultivars: most of the cotton cultivars present great
susceptibility to the three phytonematodes. Cultivar IAC-22 shows
a behavior of resistance to Meloidogyne incognita and to
Pratylenchus brachyurus (Gielfi, 2001; Goulart et al., 1997).
• Cleaning of machines and agricultural tools: strong water jets are
sufficient to remove the soil that has adhered to machine parts
and to agricultural tools.
• Nematicides: products based on active ingredients Carbofuran,
Aldicarbe, Fenamifos and Terbufos are registered by the Ministry of
Agriculture for cotton crops with the aim of controlling
Meloidogyne incognita and/or Rotylenchulus reniformis. Only the
commercial products Furadan 50 and Ralzer 50 GR are recom-
mended for the two phytonematodes. The use of nematicides is
quite frequent in cotton growing areas, mainly due to the
monoculture that is carried out in many areas year after year,
stimulating a considerable increase in the nematode population.
• Antagonist plants: green composting with Crotalaria spectabilis, C.
grantiana, C. mucronata, mucuna-aterrina, mucuna-cinereum or
wild turnip also contribute to reducing the population density of M.
incognita. Crotalaria breviflora, C. spectabilis and C. juncea are
indicated for the control of P. brachyurus e R. reniformis (Motta;
Machado; Inomoto, 2006; Silva et al., 1989).
• Crop rotation: gramineous plants such as rice, sugarcane and
Digitaria decumbens have a resistant behavior to the reniform
nematode. The search for soybean cultivars that are resistant to the
reniform nematode and the root lesions is being initiated. In a paper
by Asmus (2006), commercial soybean cultivars M-SOY 8001, CD
202 and CD 201 stood out as being resistant to the reniform
nematode.
For Meloidogyne incognita, the use of resistant soybean cultivar is the
most efficient means of control and the most appropriate one in a
crop rotation situation. Information on these resistant cultivars can
be obtained by consulting EMBRAPA'S annual publication that deals
with Production Technologies for Soybean in the Central Region of
Brazil. Brachiaria brizantha, B. decumbens and Panicum maximum
cv. Guiné can be recommended for the control of this phytonemato-
de. Peanuts and hybrids of resistant maize (P30F80, BRS 2114,
AG9090 and others) can also be used.
• Weeds: weeds are excellent host plants for gall nematodes, reniform
nematodes and root lesion ones. Therefore, avoiding their presence
in the crop is of great importance to prevent their increase and to
maintain the nematodes during the harvest and between harvests,
so as not to have an impact on the success of the crop rotation.
DisseminationThe transport of soil particles by wind, a fact that can take
place intensely in a conventional system, especially on bare
land, during the stages for soil preparation, can lead to the
dissemination of the phytonematodes inside and between
properties. Machine traffic also contributes to dissemination,
as it displaces soil that is adhered to tires and other
components of the machines and agricultural tools.

As

é tudo!
Protection is everything!ave you noticed how in today's world the verb to
protect is constantly being used? There is a reason for
this, since protection is connected to the idea of Hprevention, which means foreseeing a problem and ensuring
the integrity of what we wish to protect, be it our home, a life, a
position or even an idea or creation. This is a highly valued
attitude today since it allows us to avoid pain and disappoint-
ment, as well as saving us time and money for the most part.
In agriculture, it works the same way. Let us take, as an
example, a typical case in which protection is everything: seed
treatment in large crops. The use of fungicides in this
treatment is an inexpensive, efficient and indispensable
practice that, along with high quality seeds, becomes a strong
foundation on which to obtain homogeneous and dense stands,
which lead to the desired high productivity.
Brazilian agriculture stands out internationally in this aspect,
which proves that our farmers are aware of the urgent need to
adopt this practice. The high amounts of STF (Seed Treatment
Fungicides) use in Brazil illustrate this awareness. Statistics
show that 100% of hybrid corn and vegetables are treated with
fungicides. This also applies to 80% of soybean seeds; all
cotton seeds are cultivated with high technology and there are
high levels in other crops, such as winter cereals, beans, and
highland rice. Farmers recognize that the seed is the most
efficient vector in the transportation of plant pathogens, since it
disseminates these microorganisms across short and long
distances.
Large crops, other than vegetables, flowers, fodder plants, or
even weeds, contain within their seeds specific pathogens
and/or saprophyte polyphagous organisms such as Aspergillus
spp. e Penicillium spp., also known as storage, or post-harvest
fungi. These fungi harm seeds by reducing their germination
capacity, their vigor and, consequently, the crop stand. Since
they are dispersed by the seeds, the fungi enter healthy areas
and reinforce the harmful “patch” of these plant disease
agents.
Treatment of seeds with fungicide aims to eradicate fungi
carried by the seeds themselves as well as providing some
protection for seeds against fungi that have the soil as their
essential “habitat.” These are classified as soil fungi and are
very aggressive, usually polyphagous since they are parasites
of a large number of cultivated species and are important
causal agents of the feared “damping-off,” or the falling of
seedlings prior and following emergence.
Isolated control practices are not part of the integrated
management of large crop diseases. Joint measures must be
adopted in order to obtain a healthy plant with high productive
potential and to generate seeds or grains of the highest
sanitary and physiological quality possible. The production
process begins with seeds of known cultural value treated with
products specially developed for this purpose, in the appropria-
te sowing season and density, continues with cultivars resistant
to disease and adapted to regional climatic conditions making
use of balanced fertilization. Do not forget that in the case of
leguminous vegetables, when inoculation is correctly used it
can supply all the necessary nitrogen for the development of
the plant.

A powerful mixturesince the sixtiesFor reasons perfectly explained by the science of seed
pathology, and corroborated by the millions of hectares
annually treated, the best and safest results in the control of
seed plant diseases in different crops are obtained by the
application of products known as double action since they join
in their formulas, preferably in liquid form, active ingredients of
the systemic and contact type.
Among the fungicides registered for seed treatment, the
carboxin+thiram mixture stands out internationally as it is
registered in more than 100 countries with the trademark
Vitavax-Thiram 200 SC. In Brazil, Uniroyal/Crompton, today
known as Chemtura Indústria Química do Brasil Ltda., chose
FMC as its domestic distributor because of its unequaled
expertise and world leadership in seed treatment. The exclusive
liquid formula of Vitavax includes unique characteristics for
stability, suspensibility, redistribution and adhesiveness in seed
mass, easily visible to the user by the unusual pigmentation
that the product gives the seeds.
Vitavax is still the only product of its class, patented in the
United States under no. 3,454,391 in 1969, based on scientific
research conducted by the University of Kansas stating that
Carboxin is a catalyst that stimulates the enzymatic activity of
seedling, accelerating the transformation of nitrates into nitrites
and, in turn, into organic components (proteic nitrogen) that
are responsible for growth inside the plant.
The growth biostimulating effect in seedlings induced by
Vitavax-Thiram 200 SC is observed with higher intensity when
sowing takes place in unfavorable edaphic-climatic crop
conditions. Under optimum conditions such as high vigor seeds,
fertile soil, or appropriately fertilized and corrected soil, with
appropriate humidity and temperature, it is obvious that the
stimulating effect will not manifest itself, since it is impossible
to improve on optimum conditions.
With the advent of the carboxin+thiram mixture developed by
the former Uniroyal Química at the end of the sixties, the
formulation (systemic+contact) would be later recognized and
adopted by official research institutions as a standard for
soybean seed treatment.
In the beginning of the nineties, the original Vitavax-Thiram
formulation in its original WP (Wettable Powder) version was
introduced internationally by Uniroyal Química in a new and
bold liquid version of this seed treatment fungicide. It was the
result of the agronomy expertise of a company focused in ST
that broke the paradigm worldwide that it was impossible to
treat leguminous seeds with a liquid product. The liquid formula
was accepted and widely used by farmers and adopted by all
other companies operating in the segment.
In order to have perfect interaction between the systemic and
contact actions of a fungicide, it is indispensable for the active
ingredients in the formula to be fungitoxic (be efficient) against
pathogen classes that are parasites of the crop, or that are
known to be present in the soil of the geographic region where
the product is being used. This means that the contact and the
systemic parts must act harmoniously in order to complement
each other's respective actions. Seed treatment compositions
where the systemic fungicide is highly specific for a certain
class of fungi is restricted for use in susceptible crops or regions
where the probability of occurrence of this type of pathogen is
high. Hence, it is not enough to have double action, the product
needs to provide double performance.
Other than expanding the range of action of each one of its
components, the joint action of the fungicides that compose the
Vitavax-Thiram 200 SC formula minimize the possibility of
selection of resistant breeds by working in different sites of the
fungi's biological cycle.
Carboxin's systemic action interferes in the metabolism of the
hyphae of the infecting fungi, especially of the Basidiomycetes,
by blocking their penetration activity in young tissue (disinfecti-
on) and by translocation, where structures such as seminal and
secondary roots, hypocotyl and coleoptile of seedlings are
protected during their initial development phases. The infecting
hyphae (that lay dormant inside seeds), housed in the
integument, endosperm or in the seed embryo, are eradicated.
The contact action of thiram (TMTD) is busy eradicating a broad
range of fungi belonging to the classes of Deuteromycetes and
Ascomycetes located on the outside of seeds (loosely connected
to the integument, covering, paleae, and lemma). This
promotes the decontamination of these seminal structures, as
well as protecting seeds and seedlings from attacks of the main
soil fungi. This also protects against Oomycetes (Phytium spp.
and Phytophthora spp., pathogens more common in temperate
and humid regions). Thiram acts as a protective “shield” for
seeds by repelling, controlling or minimizing attacks from these
fungi in the rhizoshere environment.
Seed treatment with Vitavax-Thiram 200 SC has the goal of
aborting fungi parasite activity that negatively interferes in the
seed's germination process and thus avoiding primary infection,
in other words, the transmission of the fungi present in the
seeds to the emerging plants in the form of fungic disease in the
case of a pathogenic fungus.
Let's not forget: the basis for a good harvest begins with healthy
and protected seeds.

A challenge through time
iseases in plants at present are responsible for a 10% to 20%
loss in the yearly agricultural productions worldwide. Problems
are uncountable in crops such as potatoes, tobacco, tomatoes, Dsoybeans, beans, cereals, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. Evidently
many of these problems are not modern. In old times, the Romans
already faced diseases in grapevines, and based on empirical data,
some of the fungicides being used up to present became consecrated,
such as the inorganic copper ones.
However, with the epidemic caused by Phytophthora infestans in potato
plantations in 1840, more than one million people ended up dying in
Ireland. As a result of the tragic extension of this event, a diversity of
scientific activities gave way to what is presently known as modern
Phytopathology. Under the leadership of mycologist Anton de Bary,
several scientists began their research in Europe and the United States,
rebutting theories such as spontaneous generation and, based on
genetic and biochemical foundations, began to associate organisms to
the problems whose actions on plant physiology represented great
damage. Since that time onwards, several epidemics have been
reported. Hemileia vastatrix in coffee (1870), in Ceylon, Microcyclus
ulei in rubber (1920) in Brazil, Cochliobolus miyabeanus in rice (1943)
in China, Cochliobolus heterostrophus (1970) and Fusarium (1999) in
wheat in the United States and Phakopsora pachyrrizi in all of the thsoybean production areas (since the beginning of the 20 Century).
These examples are negligible if we consider that only in bean crops
there are more than 240 diseases that have been described, whilst in
the soybean crops there are more than 40 pathological systems.
thWhile during the beginning of the 20 Century the main goal was to
discover which pathogen was causing a certain disease, presently a
variety of research centers throughout the world seek to determine the
genetic and biochemical bases involved in interactions between
individuals of a pathogen population and the cultivars of a host crop.
Many resistance genes are cloned routinely. A variety of crops have had
their chromosomes mapped, in the quest to characterize the available
loci to improve such features and comply with the ever-growing
demand for quality in the world. Genetic engineering strategies are
making it feasible to incorporate genetic resistance against targets
whose traditional techniques were not operational and were extremely
costly. The pathogen's inherent resistance has made it possible to
incorporate resistance in crops such as tobacco or potatoes against
virosis that until a short time ago were deemed impossible to obtain.
Mapping and molecular bombing techniques may make it possible to
obtain genetic resistance against the bean golden mosaic geminivirus.
A diversity of physical and biological control strategies have equally
been developed, with satisfactory results obtained in segments or
under specific conditions.

researched and launched into the
agricultural production world markets.
Ranging from inorganic metal fungicides to
products with the capacity of interfering in
physiological or genetic processes, we have
observed significant progress in the last 60 years.
Nonetheless, alongside with significant technical
progress, 10% to 20% of the world food production
continues to be lost, giving rise to a discussion from
several viewpoints.
From the pathogen-host interaction viewpoint, genetic
improvement of vegetables, with the aim of finding productive
and specialized cultivars ended up by leading to the screening of
the most virulent and aggressive individuals in the pathogen
population. In the 70's and 80's, the primary goal was to obtain
cultivars resistant to the more relevant pathogens in crops.
Nevertheless, as new cultivars were launched, new physiologic
species ended up taking over and destroying the resistance, three or
four-fold times faster. As state resources destined to research
underwent a drop worldwide, genetic resistance remained a priority
only in those cases in which long-lasting results were obtained.
Furthermore, a loss of rusticity in detriment of a gain in
specialization led to an increment in crop sensitivity. If in the past
such crops had low levels of productivity but were sufficiently rustic
to minimize the impact of pathogens, presently they can attain high
productivity, and still present great sensitivity, even though such
problems are deemed to be secondary.
From the market viewpoint, what has been observed is a growing
demand regarding diversity and nutritional quality, as well as the
food's visual appeal, thrust by agro-industry that demands
germplasm with minimum fiber, oil, vitamin or carbohydrate
contents. In such a scenario, production factors have become
secondary. In truth, the urban universe has no knowledge of the
agricultural process that gives way to food, clothing, cosmetics, or
the fuel that moves us day in and day out. If it had knowledge of
this world, perhaps there would be a contention in the level of
demand. Rural producers, who originally were the
autonomous suppliers of raw material, became part of the
production process impelled by the great commercial
and industrial conglomerates. Phytosanitary problems
continue to fall under investigation. Management
techniques and systems are researched to
economically ensure the feasibility of agricultural
exploitation. As soon as these problems attain
levels that will financially impact the final
goals of the system, they will deserve the
due attention. It is possible that oftentimes
we take action somewhat late, and it is
also possible that it is too late already to
take effective action. In the final
account, human beings have been
selecting plants that comply with their
desires, hardly ever contemplating the
population dynamics and balance.

incidence of diseases. In the present day scenario and
considering what we will have to face in terms of food demand,
the need for an adequate distribution of food throughout the
world, and how all this ties in with food security, the role of
diseases in the future of agriculture should be looked upon with
concern. Some issues are inevitable.
Can genetic strategies add sufficient genetic complexity to
counteract the viability of pathogens? Can the oil crisis impact the
supply of fertilizers to such a point that it will make crops
vulnerable to pathogens, not enabling them to express their
productive potential? Is it possible that the synthesis of fungicides
may be impacted to such a point that it will reduce their
availability and be unable to comply with the ever-growing
demand? Will we have an even greater increase in the targets as
crops become evermore sensitive and vulnerable? Will integrated
management strategies, due to the prevailing economic scenario
and the growing demand for quality and quantity in food,
continue to be feasible and in accordance to the pressure of the
pathogen population?
Investments in technology linked to seeds and genetic
engineering are part of the present scenario with a strong future
repercussion, if we consider exclusively disease management. It
is important that in the future scenario we do not lose sight of
how the pathogen and the host operate within population
dynamics. The already consolidated genetic engineering needs to
be looked upon in view of the scenario above. We do not deem it
sufficient to have an introgression of genes as a solution to
problems relating to diseases. As a global strategy, the
complementary role of chemical, genetic and cultural actions will
have to be adjusted to the varying environments. In tropical
regions, where the population dynamics of organisms is even
more intense, the probability that diseases will become significant
factors is considerable. Nowadays already, when we consider the
cost of producing the main crops, whether annual or perennial,
disease control tends to be a significant part, and the trend will be
growing. Based on present-day reality, the role of diseases does
not seem to be minimized, quite the contrary, this will require
partnerships between Industries and States, whose investments
will make it possible to keep the importance of diseases at a level
that may be compatible with the global market.

Know your enemyne of the basic principles of a battle against pests is to
know how to identify them. This is done by collecting
the insect or through observing the symptoms Opresented by the plant, making it possible to determine which is
the pest attacking that crop, which is fundamental to make use
of the appropriate control measures.
Nevertheless, producers should be concerned with the pests
that take place every year, the main ones, because these are
the ones that will cause damage. In Rio Grande do Sul, for
example, there was an increase in the incidence of pests in
irrigated rice in the last few harvests. It is the case of the root
pest, Oryzophagus oryzae (COL: CURCULIONIDAE), the most
important pest in irrigated rice. In the last harvest 60% of the
area cultivated in the state was attacked by this pest. Besides
this species, others also attacked the crop: Lissorhoptrus
tibialis, Lissorhoptrus bosqi, Lissorhoptrus carinirostris,
Lissorhoptrus lepidus, Helodytes sp., that is to say, there was an
increase in the insect population in the crop and consequently
an increment in the damages caused.
The level of damage is defined by the population of a pest that
causes a reduction in grain yield equal or higher than the
estimated cost of control. Therefore, before applying chemical
products, a producer should know which are the pests causing
damage. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out periodic
inspections in the crop, a sampling, with the aim of specifying
the population levels that exist in such plants.

Adults feed on the leaf parenchyma in the longitudinal direction, leaving
scars that are 1 mm wide. The greatest damages are caused by the larvae,
after 30 days of irrigation, as they cut the root and cause an imbalance
between the aerial part of the plant and the root system, decreasing the
absorption of nutrients and causing up to 80% destruction in such plants.
The damaged plants present a lower height, yellowish leaves with dry tips
and can easily be pulled out. When such symptoms are observed, the root
system is already sufficiently damaged and greatest losses have already
taken place. Infestations levels that cause economic losses begin with 5
larvae/sample.
DESCRIPTION AND HABITS
The adult root pests head towards the crops with the temperature increases in
Spring, when irrigation begins, as formerly they were hibernating in the stubble,
grasses, mud walls or huts, streets, canals, bamboos, located either on the inside or
outside of the crops. The first step taken by adults is to enter the crop and feed
themselves. Afterwards, the female pest lays eggs in the sheath of leaves along with
the plant culm. There is the opening up of the larvae a week later and in two days
reaches the roots. The larval stage is long, lasting on average 30 days, therefore it is
necessary to control this when there exist high levels. After this, there is the pupa,
that last ten days and it is then that the adults appear, completing the cycle.

DETERMINATION OF THE NUMBER OF LARVAE
The number of larvae can be obtained by pulling out a plant with 7 or 8 offspring and
putting it in a bucket of water. Upon shaking the plant, some larvae will appear
floating on the surface. After counting them, the water will become very muddy.
Therefore it should be tossed out and substituted with clean water. By agitating the
soil at the bottom of the bucket, generally a high number of larvae will be observed
once again.

Aspects to consider in thechemical control of the root pestThere are several control methods for the root pest that are
nowadays within reach of irrigated rice producers. Basically, we
can divide these in preventive methods, those used without the
certainty that the pest will occur, including here seed treatments
and control of adults, or leaf spraying and curative control, also
called larvae control, in which an insecticide is only applied
when the pests occur at damage levels, verified previously by
research agencies, consisting in the application of granulated
carbamate insecticides, with the presence of a water blade.
The main advantage of preventive control through seed
treatment or through the control of adults is its practical aspect.
In the first case, during periods in which the work load is
reduced this application can be done, taking advantage of the
labor available on the farm and in the second case, the product
goes jointly with the herbicide, which dilutes the cost of this
application. Nevertheless, the producer runs the risk of applying
the product without the need for it, or even carrying out an
application in the total area, when in truth the attack has taken
place in only 50% of the area. In these situations, preventive
control becomes anti-economic, that is, it is the price paid for
the sake of practicality.
MANEJO
MANAGEMENT
Producers can apply some technical recommendations
when they observe the presence of insect-pests in their
crops, to avoid losses.
Elimination of weeds
Host plants in canals, drains, streets, mud walls or huts
extend the permanence of insects, as they take shelter
there during the hibernation period, when the climate
conditions are unfavorable.
Destruction of stubble
Will create adverse conditions for the adults in
hibernation, a period of low temperatures. It is not
recommended to burn the stubble, because of the broad
scale elimination of natural enemies.
Manuring or fertiliziang
This gives way to stronger plants, larger roots that are
better able to withstand larvae attacks.
Chemical control
There are registered products for the control of the root
pest, for seed treatment, for the control of adults and to
apply to control larvae.

At this point, the benefits of curative control are undeniable, as
they help the farmer control pests at an ideal time, that is, not
before this plague attains a population level which would truly
justify control or later, after irreversible damage has been
caused in productivity. Allied to this, we have the possibility of,
with a well carried out sample, controlling pests only in the sites
attacked, allowing for a lower cost per hectare treated.
Furthermore, differences between varieties should be taken into
account when it comes to tolerance to insect attacks, differences
between the duration of larval attack versus the duration of the
growth of stalks/root appearance period, the fertilizing period
used and the uncertainty of the occurrence of these pests and
we will have a sample of the complexity of factors involved in
the decision making process to control this pest, pointing to the
fact that to apply to prevent could eat away a large chunk of the
producers profit. FMC has invested in upgrading and enhancing
the Furadan 100 G and 50 G formulations, the only Carbofuran
toxicological class III (blue strip) and the only ones in their
category to be registered for aerial application. Besides this,
FMC was the first company to submit its products to stringent
assessments of soil degradation and persistence, in water and in
sediments, besides the constant training and awareness offered
to people involved in the application processes, through its
Responsible Action Program. It is worthwhile mentioning that
Carbofuran is one of the most studied insecticides in the world,
and its registration as an insecticide dates back to 1968, it is
also registered for the control of over 300 pests in 70 crops that
are of interest to agriculture worldwide.
Integrated Pest Control (IPC) is an important tool in rice crops,
as it is based on agronomic concepts such as sampling,
economic damage level, economic control level, damage
prevention level, that is, a series of concepts that should be
considered when making a decision on pest control.
Unfortunately these concepts, of great importance, have not
been put into practice in our daily work, and the result of having
forgotten them has been reflected in the poorly done applicati-
ons or applications carried out outside of the ideal time frames,
or even without the need to, using non-recommended products
or products with restricted use, products acquired without an
agronomist prescription or even without registration for that
specific application mode, generating the need for new
applications and a consequent increase in costs for the producer.
Nowadays, in the present-day scenario it is ever more necessary
to have strong control and a correct use of the production
factors at hand. There is no doubt whatsoever that the control of
the water beetle, or simply the root pest is a relevant and
definite factor to attain high productivity in rice crops, however,
on the other hand, there is no doubt concerning the choice of
the control method that could lead to a greater or lesser
profitability per hectare for the same crop.

he revolutionary nature of Turbine 500 WG, that allows for
excellent control of one of the greatest cotton pests, the
aphis, justified the launching strategy that was equivalent Tand as good as the benefit offered by the product. It was necessary
to inform cotton producers on the features of this innovative
product: formulated with a new molecule that has a differentiated
form of action, it is the only one in the market with anti-feeding
action. This technology acts effectively, paralyzing the animals
feeding in less than two hours. As it is specific for the aphis, and due
to its differentiated form of action, Turbine also represents an
excellent option for insecticide and management rotation,
preserving natural enemies. Its water-soluble packaging is another
distinguishing factor, allowing for handling without contact,
permitting great safety to those applying it and greater ease in the
disposal of packaging.
The challenge to take this information to the customer in an equally
innovative and efficient manner, introducing Turbine 500 WG in the
cotton market successfully required that we have a strategy that

representing a total of 15 municipalities, reaching 1.400 people,

The idea behind this was to allow the customer to have sensorial
contact with all of the product benefits, ensuring this would turn out
to be a memorable experience. For this reason, the truck was
transformed into a mobile stand and the inside was divided into
stations, enabling the customer to experience each piece of
information received on the product. At the Institutional Station,
the FMC product line was presented and the portfolio of benefits
offered to cotton producers. At the following station (Pests), the
scenario represented the aphis' natural environment, enabling the
visitor to check out the damage caused in cotton and have contact
with this pest through a looking glass. A video was presented as
well, with a comprehensive explanation on the aphis, all the way
from its importance, cycle, damage caused up to the possibility of
control.
Mode of Action, the third station, showed a representation of a
molecule in a modern and futuristic environment, in which the anti-
feeding technology was presented. Ensuing this, the visitor walked
through the Natural Enemy Station, where he confronted several
insectariums with the main species of natural enemies, besides
technical information on each of them. The fifth station was
dedicated to the Water Soluble Package, the great differential of
Turbine 500 WG, as it helps diminish the disposal of packaging and
exposure to the person applying it. At that station, the visitor has
access to a glass tank to view the dilution of both the packaging and
the product, thus demonstrating the benefit. At the end, the
Questions and Answers Station, where a terminal was made
available through a computer to interactively pose five questions on
the learning acquired during the Truck Showroom, offering gifts to
those who answered the questions correctly.
The launch strategy also included other actions, such as e-mail
marketing; presentations to the main consultants in each of the
cotton producing states, a presentation to agronomists, technicians
and participants at the Brazilian Cotton Congress; technical
bulletins and all of the promotional support material for the field
team to use. All of this, added to the attributes of Turbine 500 WG,
guaranteed the success of this strategy. However, for us,
we were left with the certainty that seeking a
different way of presenting information to
the customer adds a great deal of
value to the business.

A look at Californiauring an initiative called InterTech, 15 cotton
consultants participating in a relationship program from Dthe FMC Top Class Consult were contemplated with a
trip to the United States, to the California region, for a technical
visit to cotton crops.
The aim was to get to know and gain an understanding of the
Californian production model, where cotton is produced with top
quality fibers, and subsequently convey this information to the
Brazilian cotton consultants, contributing towards enhancing the
processes developed here in the country.thThe program extended for a week from August 28 to
thSeptember 4 including field visits and meetings with
researchers, producers, representatives of the companies
supplying inputs and independent consultants. “The trip was
fantastic”, summarizes the FMC Marketing coordinator, Diego
Silveira, who led the group as they followed the program. The
consultants were able to expand their knowledge in terms of the
trends, technologies that are being used in the United States
and that, in the future will arrive in Brazil, besides creating
relationships and gaining culture”, he justifies. “We all learnt a
great deal!”, adds the technical supervisor Carlos Eduardo Fabri,
that alongside with Diego, led the InterTech project. Get to know
the main topics on the trip taken by the consultants.

What most drew the consultants' attention:
The programs developed by the University of California, geared
to research on Integrated Pest Control (IPC), genetic
improvement, natural insecticides, new technologies and
monitoring of the bollworm awoke a great deal of interest. The
fact that farmers can feel backed by secure information and that
they have the certainty of being able to count upon projects such
as these and as those of the government in holding back the
water, gives them the right ground to make decisions and was
considered to be quite relevant. The information generated by
the research centers is valued and put into practice by farmers
and this is the basis of the knowledge that guides extension
workers and local consultants.
Californian cotton plantation model:
No farmer is in a monoculture. There are at least three crops and
cattle raising. The planting period is well defined, be it because of
environmental problems or because of legislative measures
(there is strong legislation there, rigorously complied with by
everybody), which guarantees loss pest pressure. Monitoring
activities are carried out by specialized and independent
companies, and compensation for this work is deemed to be a
natural thing in the agricultural production system.
Main problems faced by farmers:
It could be the scarcity of water, were it not for the dam project.
Irrigation there is carried out essentially through flooding.
Diseases and boll worms are not problems and the nutritional
program basically follows the recommendations of the University
of California. Nevertheless, even with few pests attacking the
Californian crops, thestink bug Lygus hesperus has managed to
cause losses. With this, cotton tends to lose space ever more to
other crops, mainly due to the profitability offered by crops with
higher added value, such as almonds, pistachios and tomatoes.
In 1979 the cotton crops occupied 1,6 million acres* (3.952.000
hectares); presently they occupy 0,6 million acres (1.482.000
hectares).
Use of technology:
The use of biotechnology in cotton is not as widespread in
California, thanks to a pest control program that makes the use
of Bolgard cultivars unnecessary. Only the Roundup Ready
varieties are used. Acala/Upland (G. hirsutum) and Pima (G.
barbadensis) varieties are planted in spacing that varies
according to the soil characteristics, between 30 and 40 inches
(greater in fertile soils). On average US$ 1.000,00/acre are
necessary to produce cotton; of these, the highest cost center is
the lease of land, at US$ 250,00/acre.
The mean productivity of 3,0 bails/acre in the region requires five
irrigations carried out by flooding (1.000 mm of water/cycle),
with the cost varying between US$ 60,00 and US$ 150,00/acre
based on the distance of the canals.

The present-day competitive scenario poses new challenges to
companies. Presently the strategies adopted to set oneself aside
from competitors are being revised, as they have not proven to
have effective results. We can illustrate this scenario by discussing
some strategies used by companies when it comes to products
and price.
Regarding products, innovations require heavy investments in
research, development and in marketing, to support new products
launches. Nevertheless, products can be copied and the cost and
the time to reproduce them are evermore being reduced by
competition.
With respect to price, many companies, precisely because they
quest for new markets and market share, use this strategy to
conquer customers. However, a strategy focused on price is very
difficult to sustain in the long run, be it for new companies or
those that are well established in the market. Companies that are

What is fundamental when dealing with customers in a different way is to develop a
learning relationship with the customer, that is, the company will interact with the customer
to understand his/her needs, preferences, habits and can customize the offer and service
according to that customers' specific needs. This is the process that is repeated at every
interaction, enabling the company to continually improve its' capacity to deliver exactly
what the customers need in a personalized way.

consolidated in the market are optimizing their processes steadily
(ex: total quality, 6 sigma, continuous improvement), lean
organizational structure and insistently seeking to reduce their
operating costs. New companies that seek space in the market have
a specific period to attain their market share and remain capitalized
enabling them during that period to present a negative balance
resulting from the squeeze on margins. This cannot be sustained
forever, as shareholders expect to have a return on their
investment.
And the competitive scenario becomes more and more complex,
because besides the commoditization of products and price
competition, we have an ever greater diversity of offers for the
customer, with several competitors disputing the same market
niche. Think for one moment: how many automobile brands and
models exist in the market? How many cereal brands? How many
options in powder detergents?
In the attempt to create a competitive edge, many companies
invest heavily in mass marketing, with advertisement on television,
magazine ads, billboards, etc. And, once again, costs soar and the
rate of response of customers plummets.
And the question arises: how can companies create a sustainable
competitive edge? The answer: by investing in relationship with
their customers. The business goals will remain the same: to
acquire, maintain and develop customers. The great change lies in
how this is done. It is evident that for a company to gear its
attention to customers does not mean to have to sidetrack from
investments in the development of new products or optimization of
the operation. It means focusing on the growth of the company by
increasing the value of the customer base.

o desafio dos bravoso get stuck in the mud, earth roads, holes, slopes, dust,
closed curves, to cross rivers... The worse it is, the better.
This is the philosophy behind the International Rally of Tthe Hinterlands (Sertões) and that is why this sport is not for
everyone. You simply have to love adventure, have a bold spirit
and love being up against all odds that need to be overcome.
And it was all that which attracted me to the competition, moved
by the adventure and the challenges, which I am made of. It was
not for any other reason that at 20 years of age I dropped
everything in the South and came to settle in Bahia and, without
any knowledge whatsoever of the agricultural field, I became
the producer I still am today, planting cotton (23 thousand ha),
soybeans (16 thousand ha) and other minor crops. But there are
even more qualities needed to have success in this competition,
as there are in agriculture.
I have always followed-up on the Rally, and became more and
more passionate about this sport that demands a great deal of
determination and skill from those who practice it. With each
edition, the dream of being able to one day participate and win
grew deep inside of me. This was how in 2005 I went right ahead
and registered. I came in fourth, merely four seconds behind the
third runner up, a good result at that point. Nevertheless, to my
surprise, because that was an atypical result, in this year's
edition I became the champ. I cannot describe the feeling I had,
but I can guarantee that it was very good.
Although this result was attained due to the difficulties faced by
the favorite teams, who during the initial stages of the Rally
were there to win or drop out, there was a great deal of merit in
our conquest, firstly because we were able to spare the car until
the end and mainly because we had to overcome a series of
challenges that went beyond those that are intrinsic to the sport.

During the Prologue (time taking), we toppled over, and had to thset out in the 30 position. On the first day of the Special (the
timed part of the race) the gearbox broke, when we started out
and from then onwards we had to learn how to manage the
problem, driving with a single gear most of the race.
Afterwards, in the seventh stage, from Seabra to Brumado, in
Bahia, I had to deal with a cold, a sore throat and fever. Upon
arriving in Brumado, I was hospitalized and spent the evening
taking serum, but the following day we set off for a Special that
we ended up winning. That same day, we got the news that a
truck with the spare parts for our car had turned over on the
highway. However we received the support of the other teams,
and the automobile assembling company, who took the spare
parts and managed to resolve our problem.
I have told you all of that to justify what I said at the beginning:
it is absolutely necessary to have an adventurous spirit,
determination and great skill. In a rally like this one, every day
is a challenge, laden with adrenalin. As if the precarious
conditions of the roads were not enough, at each stage you
have to drive through 400 to 450 kilometers a day, on average,
for a total of 6 to 7 hours, oftentimes at temperatures of 48ºC
inside the car. During some of the parts it is important to gain
speed of up to 150 kilometers an hour. With any mistake, the
probability of crashing is always an imminent risk. Moreover, it
is necessary to be in shape physically, be calm upon making
decisions and really enjoy driving, because in this sport, vehicle
and team limits are put to test one moment after another. For
this reason, a great deal of concentration is needed.
Another fundamental aspect is having the driver and the
navigator be attuned. You do not know the road and the
navigator tells you what is about to come up, and for this he
needs to have skill and be able to read and correctly interpret
the spreadsheet with the car at high speeds, bouncing up and
down. The driver has to drive the car artfully to take the curves,
the jumps, the braking and acceleration at the right time, so as
to complete the track in the shortest time possible, but ensuring
the car will not break down.
It is not necessary, and you really cannot train for this. It
suffices to keep a routine of physical exercises and good vehicle
maintenance that begins to be tested 90 days before the
competition. Besides this, it is advisable to have a good car, all
of the equipment and an efficient support team, responsible for
following up on the two drivers upon starting and arriving,
where, at the box, the vehicle maintenance is carried out, a
vehicle that is washed and has the suspension, brakes, that is,
everything checked daily during the evening, when the driver
and the navigator are resting.
The reward for all of this is the pleasure this sport provides. The
award for the victory does not include money, but instead a
consecration of the driver and the navigator, who receive a

doubtlessly the coming year I simply intend to look for a

... is his progressive way of thinking. He is a man of vision and commitment...
No lazer, o patriarca, sr.
Family reunion: the Italian blood is ever present in their enjoyment of parties, and as good gauchos, they cannot live without the barbecue and unsweetened mate. During leisure time, the patriarch Egidio appreciates some good fishing and the wife, dona Leonida, at 79 years of age, besides zealously looking over her family and being a staunch supporter of her husband, is also excellent at the crochet needles

ith over 60 years devoted to
agriculture and 82 years of
age just celebrated recently, WMr. Egídio Antônio Trojan could stop if he
wished, but he hardly thinks about that.
Quite the contrary, in his property in the
Southern gaucha city of Uruguaiana, he is
still the fulltime commander. He produces
approximately 20 thousand bags of
irrigated rice in a cultivated are of about
180 ha, where Egídio coordinates the
work of his six employees at the Tapira
Farm, and takes part actively at all times
during the plowing, leveling, planting,
irrigation, dealing with the machines, in
the drier, leading and commanding his
team on the field. All with the same
determination he brought up his six
children with, two boys and four girls who
have given him 15 grandchildren and
eight great grandchildren. The two sons
that grew up working very closely with
their father, have followed his steps and
have also become farm producers, having
moved 28 years ago to Mato Grosso,
where they plant cotton, soy beans and
maize. “Everything we learnt was with
him, my father was a top teacher”, boasts
João Trojan. Going beyond the technique
and the dedication to cultivation, he
emphasizes the sense of responsibility
and honesty that was conveyed by their
father. “He always demanded a great deal
of seriousness from us, and used to say
that leisure and work never walk hand in
hand.”
Another of Egídio's very marked features
is his progressive way of thinking. Even
thought he never went to a formal school,
he became a self-taught man, “a post-
graduate from the school of life”, as
defined by his son João Trojan. He is a
man of vision and commitment, he was
one of the founders of the Cooperativa de
Aviação Agrícola Copagriu, at the beginning
of the 70's, president of the Lions Club in
Uruguaiana in 1978/1979, and also chaired
the Trade Club in 1982.
During this long trajectory, Egídio counted
upon, as he still does today, his faithful
companion Leonida Segabinazzi Trojan,
whom he married when he was 24 years
old. An Italian with a strong personality, his
wife was never defeated by difficulties and
affectionately brought up her family and
giving the necessary support to her
husband to help develop business. And
believe me, there were more than sufficient
obstacles that had to be overcome. Barely
16 years old, very young as his four other
brothers, Egídio lost his parents, victims of
an electric shock caused by a wire which
after a strong storm fell into the yard of the
small farm they lived in. Ensuing this came
the financial and family difficulties.
However, four years later, in 1944, at 20
years of age, with his brother Bernardo, he
planted his first farmland with rice, in the
municipality of Itaqui, and never stopped
thereafter. “He was able to overcome, as
few ever did, the early loss of his parents,
overcoming existential obstacles in an
extraordinary way. With a clear and
objective vision, he overcame his
shortcomings with dignity, thus mitigating
the harm caused by that loss, seeking to
understand through reading and keeping
himself informed”, summarizes his son.
Egídio was born in Dona Francisca (at that
time a district of Cachoeira do Sul). In 1956
he moved to Uruguaiana, where he
continued cultivating irrigated rice, and this rdyear he will be planting his 63 (sixty third)
crop, without interruptions. Nevertheless, if
it depends on his will, there will be many
more crops ahead of him.
