« L e lien entre HugoPratt et Jean­MichelFolon, c’est le règne

de l’aquarelle et du geste li­bre », lance Cristina Ta­verna, commissaire del’exposition “Les cheminsdu rêve”, basée sur l’œuvred’Hugo Pratt (1927­1995.Le travail de l’artiste ita­lien est exposé depuis cesamedi et les visiteurspourront découvrir cetunivers si particulier jus­qu’au 24 novembre à laFondation Folon deLa Hulpe.

L’autre commissaire, Pa­trizia Zanotti, s’est char­gée de la mise en couloirdes histoires en bandesdessinées. « Nous avonsvoulu travailler sur la thé­matique du rêve, notam­ment. Ce rêve se trouve dansplusieurs œuvres, où voustraversez des nuages. Maisquand vous lisez Pratt, vousrentrez dans un monde où

tout vous paraît normal. »Ce mélange entre voyage,

fantaisie et poésie estl’une des spécificités del’inventeur de personna­ges célèbres comme CortoMaltese. Avec commesource d’inspiration Sha­kespear, Saint­Exupéry ouKipling.

Les planches pensées parHugo Pratt reflètent aussi« le contexte dans lequel il agrandi, baigné par le multi­culturalisme », poursuit Pa­trizia Zanotti. Des racinesanglo­françaises, turqueset juives séfarades par sesgrands­parents. Il a aussi

vécu dans l’actuelle Éthio­pie, pendant la colonisa­tion, puis l’Argentine etpratiquement tous les re­coins du monde.

L’exposition la hulpoisese divise en trois étapes :nature, temps et personna­ges. Jeux de miroirs, om­bres ou cabinets ferméspermettent de découvrirl’univers d’Hugo Prattsous différents angles. Unmonde surprenant quis’intègre parfaitement àcelui de Jean­Michel Folonet de sa fondation. ■

Quand Hugo Pratt rencontre Folon« Les chemins du rêve », c’est le nom de la nouvelle exposition de l’artiste italien Hugo Pratt à la fondation Folon, jusqu’au 24 novembre.

L e conseil communal desjeunes de Villers­la­Villea participé ce mercredi à

des activités sur le thèmedes produits locaux, lorsd’une après­midi intitulée« climat­éco­citoyens ».

En compagnie d’Anne­Mi­chèle Pierard, l’échevine encharge de la jeunesse, ils sesont d’abord rendus à laferme de Gentissart. Aprèsavoir visité les lieux, ils sesont mis au travail. Avec auprogramme, la cueillettedes fraises et des courgettes.Les jeunes conseillers ont aussi été mis à contributionpour la taille des asperges.

Deux coordinateurs péda­gogiques de la Fédérationdes jeunes agriculteurs ontensuite pris le relais pourorganiser des ateliers afinde (re)découvrir des con­cepts comme le circuitcourt, la provenance des ali­ments et la transformationdes produits alimentaires.

Un vrai moment de convi­vialité et d’apprentissage, àla fois. ■ P.B .

Hugo Pratt demeure une icône du neuvième art, l'affaire est entendue. L'œuvre de l'Italien est synonyme d'aventures, de voyages... mais aussi de rêve. C'est tout le sujet de cette exposition montée dans l'antre d'un autre maître des songes : le Belge Jean-Michel Folon. à la lisière de la forêt de Soignes, sa fondation accueille aquarelles et planches signées du père de Corto Maltese.

Près d'un quart de siècle après la mort d'Hugo Pratt, ses héros

n'ont pas pris une ride. Le plus cé-lèbre se nomme évidemment Corto Maltese. Celui-ci apparaît en 1967 comme personnage secondaire de La Ballade de la mer salée. Motivé par des éditeurs en quête de bonnes histoires, le Vénitien en fera le vaga-bond des mers que l'on sait.

Les Français le découvrirent d'abord dans Pif Gadget (!) puis la revue (à suivre). Son trait à l'encre de Chine, inspiré par l'Américain Milton

Caniff, en fit alors un maître du noir et blanc, et sa virtuosité à l'aquarelle un peintre estimé.

Planches magiques

Au-delà de la légèreté de son dessin, Pratt fut aussi un conteur génial. « Il introduisit dans ses récits des tech-niques cinématographiques, notam-ment l'usage de l'ellipse, mais aussi nombre de références littéraires : à Jack London, Ernest Hemingway ou Arthur Rimbaud », commente Patrizia Zanotti, co-commissaire de cet accrochage. L'artiste nourrissait effectivement une passion pour la poésie. « Parce qu’elle est synthé-tique et procède par images », dé-clarait-il lui-même.

Cette exposition focalise toutefois sur un aspect moins (voire jamais) décrypté de son travail : le rêve. « C'est pourtant un thème fonda-mental de son œuvre, assure Cristina taverna, autre commissaire. Il fut pour lui un moyen de transporter le lecteur d'un monde à l'autre, de voyager à travers les pays ou les époques, mêlant constamment le réel à l'illusion ».

à bien y regarder, les personnages "prattiens" songent souvent, s'en-dorment et se réveillent dans une autre réalité... ou conversent avec

des animaux : des corbeaux (Songe d'un matin d'hiver) ou des requins (La Ballade de la mer salée). à la Fondation Folon, une soixantaine de planches originales et d'aquarelles se répartissent en trois sections : le temps (forcément aboli), la nature et les personnages. Comme dans le labyrinthe enfumé de J'avais un rendez-vous (illustrant l'affiche), le lecteur-visiteur s'égare alors dans des volutes infinies, en dehors des cases.Julien Damien

EXHIBITIONLES CHEMINS DU REVEComic creator and graphic novelist Hugo Pratt was born in 1920s Venice, spent the war years in Ethiopia and later moved to South America before coming back to Europe, hop-ping from the UK to Italy to France and, fi-nally, Switzerland. His travels in between are too numerous to count, and it all influenced his work, rooted in mythology and meta-re-ality. The wonderful Fondation Folon, in an old farmhouse in La Hulpe, is hosting Les Chemins du Rêve, an exhibition dedicated to Pratt’s exquisite dream sequences in his comics and graphic novels.

FESTIVALGOUVY JAZZMadelonne Farm, tucked away in the Ar-dennes close to the border with Luxembourg, is the bucolic site of an internationally re-nowned and much-loved celebration of jazz. Each year since 1978 the farm has hosted an impressive roster of names – this year’s line-up includes Mongolian-Bulgarian-French combo Violons Barbares, Ioannis Vafeas Trio with Vasilis Xenopoulos, and the Ana Popo-vic Blues Band. The horizons of Pratt's stories are always open to knowledge

VOYAGE TO A WORLD OF DREAMSPatrizia Zanotti is co-curator of Les Chemins du Rêve at Fondation Folon, an exhibi-tion of the work of Italian graphic artist Hugo Pratt.

“Hugo Pratt is a novelist who drew his stories and wrote his drawings. That might seem a contradiction, but it explains how his graphic and pictorial artistry is supported by deep narrative content. Pratt, through his characters, explored the vast universe of both phys-ical and mental travel, covering the exotic routes of the South Seas, the African deserts and the Amazonian forests. With his best-known character, the sailor Corto Maltese, he revolutionised how comic adventures were narrated, introducing quotations, themes and sequences from his vast knowledge of cinema, literature and poetry.

The themes that appear most frequently in his stories are the classic ones of the ‘great adventure’, a curiosity to discover the new while maintaining a profound respect for other cultures. Pratt grew up in an extremely heterogeneous environment, in contact with var-ious beliefs and religions. The horizons of his stories are always open to knowledge. His watercolours immerse us in exotic Caribbean atmospheres or among the poetry of the Celtic world, they make us savour the intense sounds of Macumba or the delicate minuets of Boccherini, bringing us into a rarefied and distant world of magic realism.

The atmosphere of the Foundation and the works of Jean-Michel Folon exhibited there suggested to me and to Cristina Taverna, the co-curator of the exhibition and a friend of Folon, the theme of dreams, because the alternation between dream and narration is always present in Pratt’s work. My favourite piece is Morgana, an almost monochrome watercolour that shows all Pratt’s skill in portraying a world using simple brushstrokes that create movement and nuanced emotions.

Pratt left us a great gift: learning to explore the world with curiosity and open-mindedness. Corto Maltese is a modern traveller who doesn’t fit the usual stereotypes of the adventur-er. He seeks the chance encounter; he knows that for a sailing ship there is never a single route. The journey depends on the wind. He also knows how to wait, because he knows that time and space sometimes cancel each other out to give us a different view. Entering Pratt’s dream world is a voyage in itself.”

Ook de naam Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005) zal u misschien niet bekend in de oren klinken. Maar het zien van de beeldhouwwerken van ‘L’homme bleu’ en heel wat aquarellen zal een gevoel van herkenning opwekken. En die herken-ning mag een erkenning worden.

Het universum van Folon

“Eigenlijk ben ik geen schrijver, geen tekenaar, geen affi chemaker, geen schrij-ver, geen graveerder. Ik ben abstract noch fi guratief. Ik behoor tot geen enkele school. Ik streef er niet naar om in een of andere kunstgeschiedenis te fi gureren. Ik heb niets uitgevonden want ik heb alles te danken aan iedereen. Ik begrijp mijn beelden niet, en iedereen mag ze begrij-pen zoals hij wil. Ik heb alleen gepro-beerd mijn eigen dromen vast te leggen, in de hoop dat anderen er die van hen aan vastknopen.” Folon wil niet fi gureren in een kunstgeschiedenis, maar roept wel in oktober 2000 de Stichting Folon in le-ven. Sindsdien kan je er de werken zien die hij zelf heeft bewaard “om ze op een dag op een en dezelfde plaats herenigd te zien”. Het werk van Folon mag dan

de hele wereld rondgereisd hebben, het gros ervan heeft hij voor zich-zelf gehouden. Zodat we niet naar het buitenland hoeven te reizen, maar we in Terhulpen zijn oeuvre kunnen bekijken in een knappe en sfeervolle scenografi e: aquarellen, beeldhouwwerken, affi ches, zeefdrukken, etsen … Meer dan 4500 werken en daarnaast bijna 3600 unieke, persoonlijke documenten zoals archief-foto’s, brieven, schetsboeken enz. Je hebt dan ook anderhalf tot twee uur nodig om dit museum te bezoeken. Folon heeft im-mers veel gecreëerd, misschien te veel, want hier en daar krijg je het gevoel van veel variaties op een zelfde thema.

De magie van Pratt

Hoe dan ook, het blijft een poëtisch parcours met dromen als leidraad. En dat is ook het geval voor de tijdelijke tentoonstelling over striptekenaar Hugo Pratt (1927-1995), vooral gekend als schepper van Corto Maltese. Het is de eerste keer dat een tentoonstelling over Pratt het thema van de droom behandelt, een thema dat uiteraard gedijt in het uni-versum van Folon. Het is genieten van

een zestigtal aquarellen en originele pla-ten in een magische sfeer, tussen realiteit en illusie. Folon en Pratt hebben elkaar slechts een keer gezien. Deze dromers ontmoeten elkaar vooral in hun verbeel-ding. Hun creatief trefpunt is de aquarel. Pratt defi nieerde die als vuil water, vuil met kleuren, gelukmengsels … De wereld van Pratt wordt gevoed door fabels, ver-halen, legendes en mythes. Folon en Pratt zijn beiden ‘landmeters van de paden van dromen’. Een wandeling langs deze pa-den en die van het domein dat Folon zelf ‘de tuin met de duizend rododendrons’ noemde … het is een alvast een geslaagd recept voor een – zomerse – uitstap.
