start a new year atBrigham Young Universi-ty-Idaho, the communitywelcomes them with theannual Rexburg Un-plugged event.

The event started asa way to introduce thebusinesses to our newstudents, Donna Benfield, the Executive Director ofthe Rexburg Chamber ofCommerce said.

This year, the event willtake place at HemmingVillage, a fairly new shop-ping and dining centerdowntown. During theevent, the street will beblocked off from FirstSouth to Second South.

The event is put on bythe Rexburg Chamber of

Commerce and is spon-sored by several localbusinesses.

While the main pur-pose of the event is for

students to interact withlocal businesses, the eventalso features a battle ofthe bands competition forstudent bands.

We wanted to dosomething that the stu-dents would be interestedin and enjoy. By having allstudent bands it brings alot of the students downto support their friends ifthey play in the band, saidBenfield.

Three prizes will be giv-en out for the first, secondand third place band inthe competition.

This is the 11th yearof the event and Chesbromusic is one of the prima-ry sponsors for the battleof the bands this year.

During the music event, booths run by local busi-nesses and food vendorsline the streets advertisingtheir goods and services.

Several years back Ben-field said the city wantedto hold the event on theBYU-I campus. However,it was the Universitys ideato hold Rexburg Un-plugged in thecity.

The eventwill be Sept.28 from 2 to 6p.m. Benfieldsaid the eventis usuallyearlier in themonth butbecause of thelate schoolschedule, theyhad to pushthe event to a later date.

Janet Miller, the EventsChairman, said We offer

booths to the businessesfor $25. They can alsobring us 1,500 fliers andfor $10 we will give themout to students.

The event has beenexcellent in past years. The students come outin big numbers and wehave gift packets for eachstudent that comes. There

are goodies from all thebusinesses included in thebags.

Benfield said refresh-ments and games are alsoprovided at the event.

Even though the eventis geared toward students,

Benfield explained thatcommunity members arealso welcome to attend.

Benfield said she islooking forward to thisyears Rexburg Unplugged

because the city enjoyswelcoming new studentsinto town.
