5. A WALK BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. No single place

epitomizes the history of Iceland and the Icelandic nation better than Þingvellir. At Þingvellir - literally "Assembly Plains" - the Althingi general assembly was established around 930

and continued to convene there until 1798. Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and therefore the place is held in high esteem by all Icelanders. Today Þingvellir is a

protected national shrine and was accepted on the World Heritage list for its cultural values in 2004. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault. Þingvellir is not only protected by Althingi due to its significant role in Iceland´s history but also due to its natural beauty and the geological wonders that can be found

there. Our guide for the day will be Ms. Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir, an Icelandic adventurer and pioneer. Among other things she arrived at the South Pole on January 17, 2013 after a 60-day hike, and in

2017 she arrived at the summit of Everest Mountain, as the first Icelandic woman.
