• RFID Definition– Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an

automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

RFID History

• In 1946 Léon Theremin invented an espionage tool for the Soviet Union

• RFID tags are passive, active, and semi-passive• Requires no internal power supply, the

antenna from the rfid tag picks up power from the transmitter

Facts of R.F.I.D.

• Data capacity for each R.F.I.D. is big enough so each R.F.I.D. code will have its own unique identify – unlike barcodes which are the codes are the same

for each product.

• an R.F.I.D. tag can store 2kb of data

• Weather Forecasts• Senses of Road Conditions with Use of

Beacons• Noise level Monitoring• Retail Theft Protection• Personal Identification• Information Tracking Systems• I-Pass

Why Is This Technology Still Emerging?

• RFID tags cost 20 cents a piece• High standards for UHF signal which is used to

read RFID tags• RFID tag readers cost about 1000 a piece,

companies would need many of these for their warehouses, etc.
