RFID History

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses radio waves to exchange data between a reader and an attachment to an object. The first version of the technology was created in 1945 by Leon Theremin. Originally, it was designed as an espionage tool for the soviet union. Used as a covert listening device, the sound waves were directed through a diaphragm. This altered the shape of the diaphragm, which modifies the reflected radio frequency. This early predecessor did not have an identification tag.

• 1945 - Leon Theremin develops 1st version of RFID technology, an

espionage tool for the soviet union. It was a covert listening device

that used sound waves to manipulate a diaphragm to modify a

reflected radio frequency. This early device did not use identification

tags.

• 1945-1948 - IFF Transponder developed by the UK during WWII for

use among the Allies. It was used by aircrafts to Identify targets as

Friend or Foe, thus the acronym IFF. This device is still used today.

• 1948 - Harry Stockman publishes “Communication by Means

of Reflected Power”, which set the pace for RFID research and

development.

• 1973 - RFID as it exists today was developed by Mario Cardullo, and

demonstrated by Steven Depp, Alfred Koelle, and Robert Freyman.

The original patent used radio frequency, sound and light waves as

transmission media. This device was used by the NY Port Authority

as a toll device.

• The original device developed by Mario Cardullo was designed for

use in the transportation, banking, security, and medical industries

• 1983 - First patent with the abbreviation RFID granted to Charles

Walton.

Currently, RFID is a major part of daily life, and used by the likes of

the US Department of Defense, and Wal-Mart corporation

• Finally, in 1973, RFID as it exists today was created. Mario Cardullo created a passive radio transponder with memory that was originally used by the New York Port authority as a toll device. The original patent used radio frequency, sound and light as transmission media.

Uses

Large use of RFID

Today, the largest use of active RFID is the US Department of Defense. Over 1 million shipping containers that travel outside the continental states are tracked with active tags produced by Savi Technologies. The largest use of passive RFID is by Wal-Mart. With over 2,800 retail stores, the corporation employs over 25,000 reader systems.
