All Natural Recipe Book

BeautyThe human desire to look, smell and feel good is one of ouroldest and most ingrained. For centuries, people have beenusing cosmetics to enhance and alter their appearance. However, these days, a lot of the products we put on ourbodies may actually be causing more harm than good. What weput on the body can have as large an effect on our health aswhat we put into it.

At the Women's Environmental Network, webelieve that the best way to avoid harmfulchemicals in cosmetics and everyday products isto make your own alternatives using all natural, organic ingredients.

The majority of modern cosmeticsare complex mixtures ofindustrially produced syntheticchemicals. Individually, thesecosmetic products contain verysmall amounts of chemicalingredients- it is the cumulativeand combined effect of applyingthese ingredients that gives causefor concern. Some commonly usedchemicals can trigger allergicreactions or chemical

sensitivity. Some are suspectedhormone disruptors and may affectimmune and nervous systems. Othershave been linked to birth defects, male infertility and the early onset ofpuberty in girls. Without being atrained, professional chemist, it canbe very difficult to identify harmfulchemicals in products. The ingredientlist on the back of the bottle is usuallyfull of long, unrecognisable words thatmean very little to most of us.

Essential oils have a wide range of health, skincare and haircare benefits and are great toincorporate into your beauty recipes. Below are some recommendations of oils which areespecially useful, and the different benefits of each. If you are pregnant or nursing it isrecommended that you consult a doctor before using any essential oil on your skin aresome could be harmful to you and your baby.

Essential oils are incredibly strongand therefore should not be useddirectly on the skin. Instead, blendwith a carrier oil of your choice(such as hemp seed oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil or castor oil) beforeuse. They should be blended to amaximum dilution of 5% (equal toone drop of essential oil per 1 ml ofcarrier oil).

MOISTURISERS

2 tbsp shea butter4 tbsp coconut oil

10 drops essential oils(we love refreshing grapefruit!)

2 tbsp avocado oil2 tbsp olive oil

Mix all the ingredients together in the order they are listed, then store in a sealed container - simple! Coconut oil andshea butter are solid at room temperature but still maleable. To make them even easier to mix, put the amount you needin a glass jar then pop that into a few inches of boiling waterto melt the oils a little. Shea butter and coconut oil have highcomedogenic ratings (see next page) so avoid using this onyour face, but it's perfect for the rest of your body!We chose grapefruit for its summery smell and energisingproperties, but use whichever oil you like! To make agorgeous foot cream, use a mixture of peppermint andteatree oil.

OILS& SKINCARE

There are several oils which can be used to moisturise the skin, either ontheir own or combined in an oil blend. Here are some useful examples:

Jojoba oilThis lightweight oil is suitable for all skin types, though it works bestfor those with combination or oily skin. It is very similar to sebum, theskin’s natural lubricant, which regulates how much oil the skinproduces naturally. Jojoba oil is also an excellent carrier oil (formixing with other exciting things!)

Rosehip oilThis oil is great for healing scar tissue as it rich in Omega-3 andOmega-6 essential fatty acids and Vitamin C, so try it onstretchmarks! It is also high in retinoic acid, which can help reducethe appearance of wrinkles and brighten the skin.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil has a low comedogenic rating, which means it doesnot clog pores! Perfect for use on the face, and also has effectiveanti-inflammatory properties. It is also believed to contain the idealratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 essential fatty acids, allowing it to sinkinto the skin well. Take care to store hemp seed oil in the fridge orfreezer as it will spoil if left at room temperature. It works best whenmixed into a carrier oil, such a jojoba or castor oil.

Almond OilAlmond oil is rich and indulgent. Use it on dry skin for deepmoisturising. You proabably won't need to use it every day, soalternate with a lighter oil.

Comedogenic RatingsThe comedogenic rating is a measure of how pore-clogging an oil is. The lower the rating, the lesspore clogging the oil will be and the more suitable it is for use on the face. The scale goes from 0(low) to 5 (high). These ratings are easy to find online or you can ask in health food shops.

SCRUBS &EXFOLIANTS

VANILLA CHAI SUGAR BODY SCRUB

Exfoliation - removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin - has been used inskincare for thousands of years. Recently however, cosmetic companies have begun usingsynthetic exfoliants, called 'microbeads', in face and body scrubs. Not only are these littleplastic particles bad for your skin and overall health, they are also too small for waste watertreatment to catch, so they flow straight from your shower to the sewer and out into the sea.Microbeads are disastrous for marine life, contributing to the plastic soup in our oceans andeven ending up in the food chain. Because they don't biodegrade, microbeads in the sea canend up in the fish we eat. Nasty, right? These recipes for homemade scrubs are totallymicrobead free, good for your health and the planet, and, most importantly, gorgeous. Makesure you use all organic ingredients!

5 chai tea bags80g each brown & white sugar

Tear open the tea bags and mix thecontents with the sugar andcinnamon. Then add the coconutoil, honey and vanilla extract andmix well. Use with warm water in theshower or bath on any part of thebody to leave skin glowing and soft. Store in a sealed jar and keep forup to 12 months. Enjoy!

Haircare is a huge part of nearly everyone’s health and beauty regimes, however, it mayactually be more harmful to your hair and general health than it is helpful. The main culprit isSodium Laurel Sulphate, which has been linked to all sorts of nasty problems from skin andscalp irritation and disease to hair loss and even cancer. So why is it in our shampoo in thefirst place? SLS creates a foaming lather, something that many manufacturers andconsumers associate with cleanliness. However, suds do not equal cleaning power.Instead of cleaning your hair, SLS isactually stripping it of the good, naturaloils and bacteria. Making your own allnatural shampoo is the most reliableway to ensure thatyou avoid exposing yourself to thisharmful chemical.

½ cup liquid castile soap¼ cup canned coconut milk

20 drops essential oil (e.g.lavender, orange, etc.)

¼ cup honey2 tbsp olive or almond oil

Mix all the ingredients together. You can use differentessential oils in this basic recipe depending on the resultsyou want to achieve. Lavender oil prevents hair loss andencourages growth, and soothes a dry or itchy scalp. Teatree oil works well for dandruff. Hemp seed oil willincrease elasticity and shine.
