IntroductionHabia Cable’s reputation as a manufacturer of market leading, high performance coaxial cables such as Flexiform and Multibend has been built on a foundation of RG Style ‘Brown’ coaxial cables.

RG (LS0H)These coaxial cables take the popular industry standard RG (PVC) type coaxials such as RG 58 and RG 59 and add a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH or LS0H) sheath. This provides a completely halogen free cable ideal for use in sensitive areas where use of materials such as PVC that exhibit corrosive and toxic fumes under fire-conditions are prohibited.

RG (PVC)Using solid PE dielectrics and PVC sheaths for a low cost, general performance cable, these are the industry standard for coaxial cables.

RG and SMUsing solid PTFE dielectrics and FEP sheaths in order to offer high temperature properties. These coaxials typically use non-magnetic conductors which are less susceptible to passive intermodulation as well as providing a more cost effective solution.

RG (M)These coaxial cables are original, military grade ‘Brown’ coaxials. These RG types use solid PTFE dielectrics and FEP sheaths in order to offer the highest possible electrical performance from a non-foamed coaxial. This is complemented by a wide temperature range of -55oC to +200oC which enables both a wide range of applications that the coax can be used in, and also excellent power ratings in relation to the size of the coax.

RGDThese coaxials are built up with a conductor, dielectric and then two braids in contact with one another, then finally an overall sheath. The addition of the second braid improves electrical performance over a range of frequencies, offering a cleaner signal which makes them ideal for long cable runs.

RGT and SMTTriaxials are built up with a conductor, dielectric, braid and inner sheath, then a second braid and an outer sheath. In contrast to the RGD types, as the second braid is separated from the first, it can be used as an electrical screen.

RGL and SMLDesigned to be immune to the electrical interference caused by vibration and pressure, low noise cables have in integral carbon layer between the dielectric and the screen which reduces the noise generated from within the cable by factor of over a thousand when compared to standard coaxial cables.

In addition to the various options shown here, Habia Cable also manufactures the Speedflex range of coaxes. These are designed to be dimensionally and electrically comparable with the standard RG and RG (M) types such as RG 179 and RG 316, but in addition they are a completely Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) solution.

ApplicationHabia’s RG (LS0H) coaxials take the is industry standard RG (PVC) type coaxials such as RG 58 and RG 59 and add a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH or LS0H) sheath. This provides a completely halogen free cable that is ideal for use in sensitive areas where the corrosive and toxic gasses released by PVC under fire-conditions are prohibited.

ApplicationThe original, military grade ‘Brown’ coaxials.

RGL and SML low noise cables

ApplicationsSuitable for use with piezo-electric sensors as well as other highly sensitive detection or measurement equipment, low noise cables have extremely low microphonic sensitivity due to the application of an integral carbon layer between the dielectric and the screen. Any electrical charge formed by movement or pressure on the cable is rapidly returned to and from the screen, effectively trapping these unwanted signals so that they are unable to interfere with the equipment connected to the cable.

FEP (K) -65oC to 205oC

ApplicationsFEP is a thin wall insulation and sheathing material intended for applications up to 200oC. Although primarily used as a sheathing material over PTFE data and coaxial cables, it is also often used as a dielectric in its own right given a dielectric constant of 2.1. FEP also finds use in medical applications and control/signal cables for extreme temperature environments including space.

Properties:FEP has excellent non-ageing characteristics and a broad temperature range from -200oC (a nominal operating temperature of -65oC) to +205oC. Passing many of the most stringent fire tests including IEC 60332-3-24 and UL 94 V-0, and as one of the most chemically resistant polymers, FEP is one of the most versatile materials Habia Cable has available.

HFI 90 (P) -50oC to <80oC

ApplicationsPrimarily used as a dielectric material for coaxials and data-bus cables, HFI 90 is often used in benign environments and applications. Options of Low Density (L) and High Density (H) are available.

PropertiesHFI 90 has the best electrical properties of any halogen free material with a dielectric constant of 2.3 and very high insulation resistance. Although the material does not have any particular capability in fire it is highly suitable for use in water (where it is often used with HFS 100), or in radiation. HFI 90 also has very high abrasion resistance and can be cross-linked to further improve its physical and mecahnical properties. The electrical properties of HFI 90 are essentially unchanged after cross-linking, however chemical resistance is improved, particularly oil resistance at elevated temperatures.

HFS 80, HFS 80 T (W) -40oC to 80oC

ApplicationsAlthough primarily a general purpose material, HFS 80 has found extensive use in the rail industry thanks to its considerable fire, smoke and toxicity properties. HFS 80 T is a variant of HFS 80 that was developed primarily for the telecomms market. It is Habia’s most common sheath material for Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) coaxial cables.

PropertiesHFS 80 is one of Habia’s best peforming materials in fire, and is arguably the best material for smoke generation and toxicity. The HFS 80T variant offers additional UV stability for external use. The lower temperature range has been extended from -25oC down to -40oC following further testing by R&D.

PTFE (E) -200oC to 260oC

ApplicationsPTFE is extensively used in a wide variety of applications. Particularly suited to datacoms where it is used as the dielectric material for coaxials and data pairs, due to its stability over an extensive frequency range. It is used for many high temperature applications such as gas turbines and high voltage gas ignition wires. Due to its thin-wall properties, PTFE is used in aerospace and even in vacuum.

PropertiesPTFE offers unparalleled electrical performance with the lowest dielectric constant of any solid plastic, together with excellent mechanical properties. Amongst these are a remarkable solder resistance and extremely low out-gassing. It is sutable for use from (fixed installed) -200oC or (dynamic) -65oC up to +200oC. PTFE is processed by either tape-wrapping or cold ram-extrusion and sintering.
