This has allowed me to de-velop my public speaking skills.”

MORGAN SHELLY as SANDY

Morgan Shelly (Grade 11) began her ca-reer in Drama at Rustenburg Junior School where she particularly remembers when, in Grade 1 (2003), being trained by Ms Buckle to act in “The Cabaret of Letters.” In 2012 Morgan was cast in “Bride’s Head, Revisit-ed,” the production which was victorious at the National Girls Schools’ Festival in Potchefstroom. Morgan is represented by Boss Model Management and has, under their guidance, already achieved as a local model. She has been featured in many fashion magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Glamour, as well as doing cata-logue work for Edgars Club. Her foray into modelling has allowed Morgan the oppor-tunity to perform in a number of television commercials, such as for Levi’s Jeans and Identity. Morgan regards as the greatest credit, currently on her résumé, being se-lected as South African ambassador for Guess Jeans. She is also proud of shooting an international television commercial for Clear Hair for Men, which was screened both in the USA and Europe. She intends working further in the fashion and media industry upon matriculation and looks forward to travelling overseas. Mor-gan has studied Dramatic Arts as an aca-demic subject since Grade 8. She is cur-rently also rehearsing towards her final Ma-tric Drama Performance examination, for which she will present to the adjudicators a Workshop Theatre production entitled “Sieves and Elephants.” Mr A Skelly

National Fencing Competition From the 24th ~ 29th of June, during the school holidays, the 13th African Senior International Fencing Championships were held at the UCT Sport Complex, and we, a group of Grade 9 Rustenburg girls, volunteered our time to act as crew for this event. We were offered this oppor-tunity as part of our community service sector for the President`s Award. We had great fun and got to watch our conti-nent’s greatest fencers at work and also to meet highly esteemed ministers, politicians and head of states. Not only did we have time to bond, but we learnt so much about our diverse continent as well as the art of fencing. We had the chance to serve our community as well as broaden our horizons and prospects through this experience and we would like to encourage others to join us in similar events in the future. Kelly Bang (TiC Presidents Award:B. Ryan)

In the June school holidays Ms Ryan and Ms Blackshaw took a very excited group of 16 girls away (from anxious parents!) on a World Challenge adventure to Kerala in the SW of India. We went of a three day trek through amazing spice plantations up into the Western Ghats mountains. The girls coped really well with the high tem-peratures, monsoon rains, slippery slopes and the dreaded blood-sucking leeches!! We then travelled down to Varkala, on the coast, where we spent five days on a pro-ject at a small government school. The girls bought supplies and worked really hard laying cement floors, tiling areas, building benches and making a retaining wall. In between the bouts of heavy la-bour, time was spent interacting with the gorgeous children at the school who loved having the girls there. Having earned the right to some R&R we travelled to Kollam where we spent a relaxing day on a house-

boat before setting off the next day, via train, taxi and plane, on our thirty-four homeward leg. Throughout the trip the girls assumed lead-ership roles and made all the major deci-sions about the budget, the work we did, the trips we took, the transport we used etc. I think I can safely say that it is a trip that will be remembered for a long time and one which for many girls was a life chang-ing experience. They were really wonder-ful ambassadors for their school and coun-try and coped remarkably well with the hard work, spicy food, lack of toilet paper, crowded living conditions, mosquitoes & constant hand sanitizing!! They went away as a group of individuals and came back as a team with a whole lot of skills and qualities some of them never knew they had! Ms B Ryan

GENERAL NEWS

Special thanks to Mr Gregor Profitlich who kindly donated his 100 Watt bass amp to RGHS before leaving South Africa to re-turn to Germany.

Well done to PEARL JUNG who was se-lected to play in the Orchestra at the Inter-national Chamber Music Festival in Stellen-bosch and to JULIA COOKE who led the cello section of the Concert Orchestra at the Festival. Julia played in The Selfish Giant written by the South African composer, Peter Louis van Dijk, which was narrated by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu!

The SANYO course was held in Port Elizabeth during the July holidays. After rehearsing for a week with esteemed coaches such as Farida Bacharova (Leader: CPO) and Lucia Scott, the orchestra gave performances at the Feather Market hall in Port Elizabeth and the Guy Butler theatre in Grahamstown, as part of the National Arts Festival. Our conductor was Gerard Korsten and we performed the 2nd Symphony by Sibelius, Hin-demith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis and a spe-cially commissioned piece by Robert Fokkens (a RBHS Old Boy now living in England). The concerts were well attended and we had a won-derful time. The Rustenburg participants were: PEARL JUNG (cellos of NYO) and STEPHANIE LAW-RENSON (2nd violins of NYO).

ROGs Lynne Donson (cello) and Ingrid Pienaar (viola) also attended. Stéphanie Lawrenson, C1

STANDARD BANK NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ FESTIVAL

Each year the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, held in Grahamstown, is a soul-enriching and thought-provoking experience, and this year was no excep-tion. Seven Rustenburg girls, Claire Den-ny, Megan Denny, Aimée George, Stépha-nie Lawrenson, Jaime Newdigate, Azraa Parker and Marianne Schwellnus accom-panied by Mrs Jepson, attended the festi-val this year. It was the first time that all of these girls had taken part in the festival and each of them came back inspired and enthused by the jazz idiom. They learnt more about the art of performing, their in-struments and how to improvise. During the day, the girls were exposed to a selection of elective workshops to which they could choose one that was of most interest to them. Workshops were given by teachers and professional performers

whom they were able to watch performing in the evening in the main hall. These con-certs were open to the public, but were in-cluded in the registration fee for each stu-dent attending the Festival. The girls were able to ask the professionals any ques-tions about being a musician and perform-ing, as well as about practice techniques and how to produce a ‘professional’ sound on their instruments, including the use of microphones. The girls were also put into mixed ability bands where they were able to play and perform with musicians from other schools and universities from across the country. This experience was incredi-bly enriching for all involved, even the con-ductors, as everyone was able to learn from each other, network and make new friends. Mrs R Jepson
