RGS Junior School Bullen IN ASSEMBLY THIS WEEK…. I was very grateful that my old friend, Professor Begonia, was outside investigating the shrubbery whilst I opened a present! It turned out that the present was a magnificent specimen of Sudamerlycaste costata and the Prof (he works in the Senior School) was on hand to tell the children the following: Here is a picture of Professor Begonia and some children studying Sudamerlycaste costata. It is slowly bursting into bloom and I am told that its flowers will be fragrant in the evening. I may be staying late to enjoy its scent. Now, here’s an idea: if students think of an easier name for the orchid than ‘Sudamerlycaste costata’ and then write it down and explain why they chose that name, I will draw the names from a hat and award the winner a prize. I hope you like our blooming marvellous South American orchid. CHESS

Yichen Han in Year 6 had a fantastic summer of chess tournaments. Firstly, during July

in Poland at the end of the summer term, he finished joint second in the U11 European

Schools' Chess Championship, only half a point below the champion. During August in Hull, he won the

British U11 and U12 Championship titles, scoring 6/6 and 5.5/6 respectively. After that, he beat an

English Grandmaster (GM), Mark Hebden, in the Midland Open Championship. This made him the

youngest ever Dutch player to beat a grandmaster in a longplay chess game.

On Saturday 15th - Sunday 16th September, he won the Delancy UK Schools' Terafinal U10 Championship

in Peterborough with 6/6. This is the national final of the tournament that started way back in January in

our chess club. He was awarded a cheque for £750 and a very heavy cup!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YICHEN!
