As a scholar at Bridgend College, you’ll have access to the excellentopportunities which will enable you to learn, connect and be involved. As well as studying towards your chosen qualification, you’ll also beassigned a top mentor from a business and work experienceopportunities.

You’ll have the opportunity to access external workshops, conferences,events and competitions, all designed to help to excel and achieve greatthings. You’ll be part of a unique network of scholars, each working toenhance your skills, knowledge and confidence.

Our scholarship programme runs annually for a single academic year(September-June) and includes the following support package;

+ One to one mentoring with exceptional businesses+ Extended work placements with a business sponsor+ 12 month paid subscription to a relevant trade magazine or eJournal+ £1000 bursary to support with external trips, visits, conferences and competitions

Construction trades and related industries are in the top ten largestindustries both regionally and nationally for occupations, with skilledtrades accounting for more than 65,000 jobs within the region, the fourth largest sector growth area in 2018*.

With UK employment within the industry predicted to reach 2.77 million by 2022, there’s never been a better time to consider your next steps in construction.

Based at our Pencoed campus, our purpose built construction academyhouses a diverse range of programmes from entry level through to highereducation, covering disciplines including plumbing, brickwork and thebuilt environment.

The hospitality industry offers a diverse and exciting range ofopportunities from event planning to coffee roasters, food manufacturerand organic production to fine dining.

There are more than 55,000 hospitality roles in the region, with nearly12,000 job openings in 2019, with restaurants and mobile food servicesaccounting for 31% of jobs within the industry. Accomodation and foodservices is the 5th largest industry in Wales. Restaurant operations are in the top four in-demand skills within the region and in Wales.*

If you’re passionate about creating opportunities for people to connectand relax through great hospitality, why not apply for this scholarlystrand. To apply, you’ll need to have an interest in the catering, hospitalityand food services or tourism industry and be studying one of thesequalification pathways.

You’ll have access to a top international multi-million pound hotel chain,offering fantastic work placement opportunities, mentoring as well asaccess to up-to-date trade opportunities via a monthly subscription to an industry magazine of your choice.

Careers in entertainment and the arts are the sixth fastest growingindustry, with more than 20,000 jobs within the region. The industry isgrowing 3.7% faster within the region than across Wales as a whole and is one of the fastest growing industries in Wales.

Our strong partnerships with some of the very best and innovativecompanies in Wales and the UK will provide extraordinary workplacement, live project brief and mentoring opportunities for ourscholars.

Individuals interested in applying for one of the scholarly opportunitieswithin this strand will also need to be studying a relevant creativequalification pathway.

We’re currently building a state-of-the-art £30m STEAM Academy(Science, Technology, Engineering, Digital Arts and Maths) at ourPencoed campus, opening for its first intake of students in September2021. Visit steam-academy.co.uk to find out more.

STEM related subjects make up the second largest industry in the regionand is the biggest area of employment growth. Auditing and accountingoccupations are the highest in-demand skills within the region, withdemand exceeding that of the national average.

This scholarly strand will provide learning opportunities and experiencesboth within this purpose built environment, along with access to some ofthe most innovative and influential businesses in the UK. Our build andconstruction partner, ISG will provide exciting work placement andmentoring opportunities as part of this scholarly strand, providing youwith access to cutting edge design and engineering techniques.

We are committed to advancing Welsh language opportunities for alllearners and celebrating diverse Welsh culture and heritage. As part of our demonstrable commitment to the Welsh Government's ambitious onemillion Welsh speakers by 2050, we are proud to partner with a number ofbusiness sponsors who are delivering innovative approaches to enablingWelsh language and culture to thrive.

Welsh language and linguistic skills are in high demand both within Walesand across the world, with individuals who can converse in Welsh earningaround 9% more than non-Welsh speakers, and those able to read, write and speak Welsh earning 11% more^.

Public sector organisations in Wales, including the NHS, Police, Universitiesand College are all required under the Welsh Language Act and Welshlanguage standards to deliver frontline services through the medium ofWelsh, making your Welsh language skills more valuable and sought afterthan ever before.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are vital to the Welsh economy. 14% ofpeople in Wales are self- employed and more than 99% of businesses innWales are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with over 34%employing fewer than 10 people. In some sectors, the number of peoplerunning their own business or freelancing exceeds the number of peoplein full-time employment. ‘Side hustles’ among the employed in all sectorsare also on the rise.

A recent survey found that 62% of young people between the ages of 11 and 16 would like to work for themselves if they had the opportunity.This Enterprise and Business Start-Up Scholarship recognises theimportance of start-up support for future business success and isdesigned to guide a Bridgend College learner to take the first steps on their entrepreneurial journey.
