  - Students will read an article summarising the racial riots. Key points: 

1) 1964 race riots took place in 2 periods- July and September between  Malays and Chinese. Many deaths and

2) Possible causes for this conflict: strained neighbouring relations (Malaysia and Indonesia). Hence, importance of racial harmony with our neighbours in the broader context.

  Main activity

-Students to write a personal pledge dedicated to maintaining racial harmony in Singapore, bearing in mind racial conflicts in Singapore’s history.

Closure - Teacher to wrap up and reinforce the RH message:

 

1) We celebrate Racial Harmony Day as a reminder that racial harmony is particularly important in multi-racial Singapore.
