Rhinoplasty Recovery

Your road to recovery begins essentially without delay right after your rhinoplasty. You will not find any hard and fast rules about rhinoplasty recovery. Everyone heals in a different way, in their own time.

Some mild to moderate discomfort immediately after your nose reshaping medical procedure is common. This is often managed with prescribed pain killers. Many people can stop taking the pain medication after just 48 hours. Nausea is common after medical procedures, especially if it was performed under general anaesthesia. Your surgeon can prescribe medicine to relieve your symptoms.

A compact splint will be placed on your nose. The splint’s function is to shield your nose and keep it secure for at least five to eight days after the surgery. Some surgeons use nasal packing to help reduce swelling and bleeding. This packing is positioned inside your nose during the course of the medical procedures and removed early the next morning.

You may also feel stuffed-up after nose surgery. The challenge is to not blow your nose for at least a week after surgery. Decongestants can help minimize your stuffiness. However, try to stay away from decongestants that contain aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines that can lead to excessive bleeding. Ask your surgeon for guidance before taking any medicine.

Bruising and Swelling

There will likely be some bruising and swelling within the days and weeks following your nose surgery. You could even land up with two black eyes. Try applying cold compresses to the sore parts. Bags of frozen peas or frozen raspberries might do the trick. Ask your surgeon for more advice on how to avoid swelling and bruising. Some surgeons may recommend homeopathic treatments which include Arnica Montana and Bromelain.

The majority of the swelling resolves within just two weeks, and the bruising in about a month. However, it can take up to 12 months for the residual swelling to abate so you need to be careful during this period. For this reason, you should wait at least one year before considering any revision rhinoplasty.

Be Careful While Healing

Your surgeon will give you instructions on how long to keep your head elevated immediately after rhinoplasty. You must sleep on your back for the few weeks following surgery to stop placing strain on your nose.

Be careful to avoid any type of trauma on your nose after rhinoplasty. This means no contact sports, also be careful around young children or pets which can move quickly without warning. If you are not sure if an activity is permitted, ask your surgeon for advice.

In the event you wear glasses, try not to use them for a few weeks after your nose cast has been removed. Consult you surgeon for advice on when you can start using your glasses. Be careful washing your face and make sure you use sunblock on your nose once your surgeon says it okay to do so. Your nose will probably be quite delicate for a while after rhinoplasty.

You are likely to be functioning as before within 10 days following the procedure.

Watch Out For Infections

There are certain red flags you should be on the lookout for which may signify that you recovery is not going well. A fever can signal infection so you should take note of any high temperatures you experience and take antibiotics if they are prescribed.

Having the perfect nose can be achieved with rhinoplasty but it is important to remember that this surgery, like all surgeries, does require some recovery time. Always wait until your nose is completely healed to view the full benefits, and never consider having revision rhinoplasty before 1 year after the first rhinoplasty procedure.
