Welcome to your autumn issue of Rhiwbina Living - the official magazine of thevillage.Last issue, I spoke about looking forward to long summer evenings and balmyweather. It’s a shame it never seemed to arrive. But autumn is certainly beginningto make its presence known.North Cardiff is such a beautiful place at autumn. The crimson colours comecreeping down from the valleys and create a patchwork of yellows, golds andreds. It was about this time four years ago that we were planning the first issue of

Rhiwbina Living. We never expected the magazine to become such a treasuredpart of the local community. But it has, and we are delighted to continueproducing a magazine that reflects the special community spirit we have here. Our featured interviewee this issue is probably already well-known to fans of

MTV. Matthew Pritchard, star of ‘Dirty Sanchez’ is renowned for his daring on-screen antics. But there is another side to the North Cardiff stuntman andskateboarder. Read more on page 10.With the 2011 Rugby World Cup on, we thought we’d highlight the men of NorthCardiff’s rugby heroes over the years. Most recently of course, Rhiwbina’s veryown Sam Warburton captains the Welsh team who are looking to progress to thelatter stages of the World Cup Finals this autumn. If you’ve always fancied yourself as a writer, we’ve started a new page devoted

specifically to local writers who would like to see their work in print. To find out why local firemen are getting naked, their epic story starts on page

15. It’s not a story for the faint-hearted.Lon-y-Dail is our focus for our ‘Local Photo Album’ this issue and we’ve got afantastic £170 worth of spa treatments up for grabs in our competition. Our Christmas issue will be out early in November. It will feature details of theannual Victorian Festival. Until then, enjoy all that autumn brings.See you in November!

As your Neighbourhood BeatManager, I continue to fight thisbattle on a daily basis. I woulddescribe “rogue trading” from theaggressive selling of items door todoor, unwanted building work andthe purchasing of shares from nonexistent companies.Regretfully, the residents ofRhiwbina are seen as vulnerable andeasy prey for those unscrupuloustraders who are driven to get themost money for often shoddyproducts and inadequate workcarried out.Through partnership work with the

local trading standards team, westrive together to reduce theopportunity for these practices to becarried out. As a multi agency

approach, I have participated in anumber of proactive operations. The operations have been very

successful. During the exercises, persons have been dealt with forminor drug offences, reported by theDepartment of Works and Pensionfor claiming incapacity benefit whilstworking, reported by Customs andExercise officers for using vehicleswith “red diesel” (the duty has notbeen paid on the fuel), the list isendless. By carrying out theseoperations, we are able to monitorand obtain intelligence of the traderswho working in your neighbourhood. If residents adhere to the followingpoints then we can all fight the battleagainst the rogue traders:» All work carried out and productspurchased should be of asatisfactory standard.» Cancellation rights in writing by laware required to be given by the

trader.» Contracts/invoices should becompleted prior to work beingcarried out. It is imperative that youknow the price and what work is tobe carried out.» Use a trader who has beenrecommended by a friend orneighbour.» Have a family member or friendpresent when the work is beingagreed.» If you have not asked for any workto be carried out or requested aquote, make sure that you send thetrader away.» Report any suspicious activityconcerning these individuals. Please contact South Wales Policeon 029 20 222111/101/999. DDeeaarr EEddiittoorrssMy son Nick Salter, a 16 year oldpupil of Whitchurch High Schoolwho has just completed hisGCSEs, has turned his attentionto another fund raising event forthe Wales Air Ambulance, thecharity organisation that savedhis life.In 2007, Nick was involved in abiking accident and sufferedserious facial injuries. While out on a scout camping

holiday, he was off roadmountain biking in the Forest ofDean, when he hit a rock. Hewent over the handle bars and

fell face first down the mountain, knocking himself out andsustaining severe facial injuries. He also fractured his elbow.Because of the remoteness ofthe mountain and the severity ofhis injuries, the Wales AirAmbulance were called and tookhim to Hereford Hospital. Withoutthe prompt action of both Nick’sScout leaders and the Wales AirAmbulance (and her crew), thedoctors said Nick wouldn’t bearound today.Nick was joined by fellowstudents and staff fromWhitchurch High for the 55 milesponsored bike ride from Breconto Cardiff Bay on Sunday 26thJune.

His next sponsored event is aparachute jump and possiblyclimbing Mount Kilimanjaro,Nick has a huge debt to payand I don’t think he’ll ever stopfundraising for them.If anyone would like to donate

Muddy Bum BikesCelebrates First Year ofNew ManagementFor Rhiwbina trader, Sam Lawrence, bikes and the local village havebeen part of his upbringing.“We lived at the top of Rhiwbina

Hill. My brother and I were cyclingeverywhere from the age of 11. “I was quite happy in my last job

this time last year but word got tome that the shop was up for sale. I was waiting at the traffic lights oneday, and happened to be stoppedoutside the shop. It was then that Idecided to go and see what theowner was wanting for it. Once I’dspoken to him, it was a no-brainer.“I then set about trying to raise the

money for it. Luckily, I didn’t have toapproach the banks for it - all thefunds came by way of loan fromfamily and friends. “Unfortunately though, just as we

were good to launch, I fell off mybike and broke my leg. I had to askaround for help once again from

friends and family. They reallyhelped me.”The shop is now celebrating its firstfull year of trading under its newowners. And in that time, they’vemanaged to achieve a great deal.“The biggest thing we’ve achieved

is the fact that we have beenaccepted by the community - andthat’s something that we’re lookingto extend and become moreinvolved with. We donated a bike tothe Rhiwbina Events Committee forlast year’s Summer Festival. We alsooffer shop rides where we takecustomers out on local trails. We’retrying to engage with the grassrootcyclists in the area. “As a business though, we’re oncourse to beat the previous owner’sbest year in our first year alone. We’d like to think that this is down tothe positive reputation we’ve workedhard to build since we took over lastyear.”The shop has also launched theirown downhill race team, that will

compete nationally.“We’ve also got plans for creatinga team to compete in road racesnationally too. In fact, we’ve just gotback from Germany, where we wereasked to attend and test 2012products.” Sam remains tight-lipped about themedium-term plans for the shop. “We’ll be rebranding the store inthe next few months. We sell a lotonline too. Our bikes are all 99%ready to ride when shipped, whichmeans that customers don’t have togo assembling themselves. Ourshop has onsite repair facilities, looked after by my brother Ben.“Ben has worked at the shop sincewe started. His contract at Airbus inToulouse was coming to an end sowe snapped him and hisengineering skills up pretty quickly!”says Sam.AA:: 55AA BBeeuullaahh RRdd,, RRhhiiwwbbiinnaa,, CCaarrddiiffffCCFF1144 66LLTTTT:: 0022992200 6622 66116699EE:: iinnffoo@@mmuuddddyybbuummbbiikkeess..ccoomm

A firefighter based at Whitchurch FireStation is attempting to raise£100,000 for charity this winter, whenhe and a colleague will attempt torow the North Atlantic.Jamie Windsor and Ely-based JohnHaskell are raising money for fourcharities - the Fire Fighters charity,Breast Cancer Care, Help for Heroesand the WRVS. They will be leaving the island of LaGomera in the Canaries on the 4thDecember, and arriving in theBarbados region some 3 monthslater. The “0 items of clothing” is causingthe most interest and concern, notleast for the crew. The reason for theprolonged nudity is that salt crystalsform over the body during the trip, and these then chafe the skin duringthe row causing open sores. Butnudity presents its own problems, mostly being sunburn and hungry seagulls.

Jamie told Living Magazines: “The two main aims of the trip areto raise money for the chosencharities, and not dying. The eventis a serious undertaking. We willface 40-50ft waves, sharks, tropicalstorms, navigation, winds andcurrents. More people have beeninto space than have rowed theAtlantic!”The duo will row the 3000 miletrip, using a 2 hour rotating shiftday and night burning 10,000calories each day. There pair willbe eating freeze dried food, andthe occasional bit of fish. (Theycannot fish too much as this willattract sharks!)The pair are also linking in withother organisations, principally touse the publicity they are gaining topromote fire safety and to talk with, and motivate young people, to dosomething interesting that helpsothers.John had the idea for thefundraising event after his wiferecovered from breast cancer. Giventhe support he received from thischarity, he wanted to give somethingback. Jamie has always supportedthe elderly as being a fire-fighter, hegoes into many homes and seesgreat people in need of somesupport. The team will be raising money atvarious events locally:• Fireworks night at Whitchurch firestation. (Tickets will be available asusual at the station soon)

• Car Washes• Corporate sponsors (the pairdesperately need more corporateinvolvement. If you can help pleasecontact them. Details below)• Marathon Treadmill runs atsupermarkets• Public donationIf you would like to donate anyamount it would be greatlyappreciated by the team and this can be done by visitingwww.atlanticdash.co.uk. Sam Warburton2009- presentSam’s sporting interest started whenhe was just 10.“I was playing at primary school. Iwas always good at sprinting so theHead put me on the wing in Year 5rugby. I didn’t have a clue what to doto be honest, so I stood there for awhile until someone gave me theball.”A back row forward, he was captain

of the Wales Under-20 team for the2007–08 season. Sam made hisdebut for the senior Wales nationalrugby union team on 6 June 2009versus the USA. Versatile enough toplay anywhere in the back row, hemade his regional debut for theCardiff Blues away to Edinburgh in2009. On 18 January 2010 he was named

in the 35 man Wales national Squadfor the 2010 Six Nations tournament. He scored his first international tryagainst Italy in the 2011 Six Nations.Warburton captained Wales for thefirst time versus the Barbarians on 4June, at the age of 22 years and 242days becoming Wales secondyoungest captain after GarethEdwards. In August, he was namedas the Welsh Captain for the 2011Rugby World Cup in New Zealand inthe absence of the injured MatthewRees.Sam told Living Magazines:“As captain I try to lead by example

on the pitch, as opposed to goingaround thumping my own players topsych them up.”Sam has certainly made an impact

on Welsh rugby already.

Gerald Davies1966-1978Gerald Davies played club rugby forCardiff RFC and London Welsh. Hecaptained Cardiff for three seasonsin the 1970s, his most famous gamefor Cardiff probably being a 1977-8Welsh Cup game against Pontypoolwhen he scored four tries to earn hisside a 16-11 win.He made his international debut on

Saturday, 3 December 1966 againstAustralia in Cardiff. In total, he wascapped 46 times for his country. Gerald toured with the British Lions

in 1968 and 1971 and was part ofthe group of Welsh Seventieslegends. Invited to join the 1974Lions Tour of South Africa, he turnedthe opportunity down on his personaluncomfortable position at theconsequences and realities ofapartheid.“We lived in Wenallt

Road for six or seven years.I remember Rhiwbina being aconvenient and comfortableplace to live in. It was a nicearea - full of good people. The best thing about living inRhiwbina was the fact thatyou could walk 100 yards andyou’d be out in thecountryside. We used to gofor walks - we’d take ourdaughter up to the Wenallt. The views up there arespectacular - looking acrossto Caerphilly and out over thechannel”.Gerald has consistently been votedthe best-ever winger in world rugby.

Howard Norris1963-1966A Rhiwbina resident for over 40years, Charles Howard Norris wasconsidered a bruising No.8 whoactually earned more caps as aBritish and Irish Lion than he did forWales. He was selected to play forthe 1966 Lions Tour of New Zealand,Australia and Canada.“We played 33 games on

that tour - that would belaughed at these days.“We landed in Invercargill

on my birthday. The boysfrom the team had bought mea present - a beer tankardwith “Happy 30th” written onit. The boys were in on thejoke - it was in fact my 32ndbirthday but I had lied aboutmy age to the selectors whodidn’t consider anyone overthe age of 30.”Howard played in the first three

Tests against New Zealand, injuringhimself in the third and thus rulinghim out of the fourth. “At the end of the tour, three others

and I were invited to play for the NewZealand Barbarians. However, whenwe got to the pitch on the Sunday,we were told that our contract withthe Lions had ended at the finalwhistle of the last Test and thereforecouldn’t play.“Sitting dejected at the airport, a

gentleman turned up with the NewZealand Barbarian shirts that we hadbeen due to play in. We had tosmuggle them out as those jerseyswere never supposed to leave thecountry.”

North Cardiff’s rugby greats

Jonathan Davies1985-1997Jonathan Davies has played bothcodes of rugby and is nowrecognised as one of the foremostcommentators of the game.‘Jiffy’ was born in Trimsaran,Carmarthenshire in 1962. He signedfor Neath RFC in 1982 and after 35games for the club, he was selectedto play for Wales. His first game was in Cardiff ArmsPark against the age old enemyEngland. Jonathan gave a Man ofthe Match performance, scoring twotries in a Welsh victory. He played a very important part inthe Triple Crown success for Walesand between 1985 and 1997 he won37 rugby union caps.During 1988, he switched codes, leaving Llanelli to play for Widnes. In1991 he took on a further challengewhen he spent the summer inSydney playing for the CanterburyBull Dogs.In 1996, he was awarded an MBEand in more recent times, hasundertaken a lot of television andradio work both in the English andWelsh languages. He even hosts hisown chat show, Jonathan, which waslaunched on S4C in 2004. He is often been cited as one of the

best fly-halves that Wales has everproduced.Jonathan now lives in Llandaff with

his family.

John Dawes1964-1971“I went to university atLoughborough and eventuallymoved to London where I became achemistry teacher. London Welsh inthose days was a flourishing side, with many of the greats playing forus – Mervyn, Gerald, JPR and thelike. London Welsh was consideredat the top echelon of rugby sides.“My first cap for Wales came in1964; we were in Dublin and therewere no replacements allowed backthen. DK Jones, the former Llanelliand Cardiff player dropped out and Iwas brought in. I was fortunateenough to score on my debut. Thecommentator said that I was‘revelling in an outstanding game’but I’m not sure which game he waswatching as I only touched the balltwice throughout the whole match!”John went on to captain Wales to aGrand Slam in 1971.“Winning a Grand Slam in the FiveNations was such an achievement. Itwas practically unheard of, but wehad such a great team full offantastic players.”1971 was also the year that Johnwas appointed captain of the Britishand Irish Lions Tour of New Zealand. The tour was a success, and to thisday, is still the only Lions team tohave beaten the All Blacks on a tour. John is a regular visitor to Llandaffwhere he enjoys time with friends.

Dr Jack Matthews1947-1951Until his recent ill-health, Dr JackMatthews was a regular at Llandaff’sButcher’s Arms. Jack formed a centre partnershipwhich is regarded as one of thefinest in the game. He won 17 capsfor Wales and six with the BritishLions, though his career wascurtailed by the Second World War. Whilst stationed at RAF St Athan airbase in the Vale of Glamorgan in1943, Jack fought future worldchampion Rocky Marciano in anamateur boxing match. Marcianofamously ended his career havingwon every professional match hefought in, but only Jack had held himto a draw.A General Practitioner byprofession he travelled, with the1980 Lions on their tour of SouthAfrica as the team doctor. Before winning his first cap, Jacktook part in five Victory Internationalsfor Wales, including the win overFrance in which he was captain. Aswell as his 17 Tests for Wales, hewon six caps for the British and IrishLions on their 1950 tour of NewZealand and Australia. He was awarded an OBE in 1981and maintained his links to bothrugby and boxing. In 2009, Jack, once dubbed theIron Man, suffered a stroke, whichleft him unable to speak.

Kingman Davies OpticiansBeulah Road, RhiwbinaFor Emily Kingman, Rhiwbina is the perfect location forher community based opticians, Kingman and Davies.“I love our little row of shops on Beulah Road. There’s anincreasingly eclectic collection of shops in our villageand I’m proud that Kingman Davies plays its role in thecommunity.” says Emily, who qualified from CardiffUniversity in 2003.“I’ve been here in the village since 2005. Mr Davies andI felt we had the same enthusiasm for creating anddriving forward this friendly practice. Mrs Davies, one ofthe partners, was retiring, leaving me to take over the

reins. I’ve tried to inject some contemporary features intothe practice since I took over and I think we’ve nowmade this place a first choice for people who are looking for a professional, quality, caring service in NorthCardiff.”The business has certainly benefited, with Emily’shusband joining the team earlier this year.“Justin joined us earlier this year. He brings over 20

years’ experience to the business. It also means now that we have on-site facilities for glazing andrepairs. Justin is highly regarded for his qualityworkmanship and knowledge!” said Emily.“We’re really happy to have a practice in the community

that offers a real family-friendly service- both during andafter your visit.”“The shop offers a range of top-quality frames from

leading brands such as Guess and Gant, but we’ve alsojust brought in a new range from Versace and Vogue. Wealso have many spectacle lenses in-store, which meansthat in some cases, you can have your eye test, andleave the shop with your new glasses in less than anhour.”If you’re looking to brighten up the way in which yousee the world, head to Kingman Davies in the heart ofRhiwbina Village.A: 3a Beulah Road, Rhiwbina, Cardiff CF14 6LTT: 029 2061 1283

Billy was No.3 in the family, thethird son for my mother, who sofervently wanted a daughter.

Make no mistake about it though, mymother loved children, and lovedBilly. Perhaps unconsciously, she didnot always show it.For some time now, my parentswere increasingly concerned aboutmy youngest brother and hisrejection of life outside the familyhome. Maybe it was his misfortunethat the two older boys were suchmodel sons, shining academicallyand on the sporting field. Both hadwon the Victor Ludorum on theschool’s sports day and were in the1st Junior Rugby Team. Billy’sachievements…nil. He was a lonerand lived in his own secretive littleworld with his only friend – his dogBobby. We lived about ten minutes awayfrom my grandparents and saw themquite often. My grandfather spent alot of his time on his belovedallotment, which was a shortdistance away from their house. Butnow this was in jeopardy. His sightwas beginning to fail, so it was decided that one of his grand-children would accompany him. Iwas too young and my two olderbrothers

were busy studying. That left Billy tobe Grandpa’s escort and he patientlyagreed. Now, in the light summer eveningsand weekends, it was a familiar sight– Billy and my grandfather walkingalong the embankment en route tothe allotment, which was on the otherside of the River Taff.Generally, the supper table’s

conversation was dominated by Pauland Edward, my two older brothers. But after the first week of takingGrampa to his allotment, Billy wasanimatedly holding the floor. He toldus of Grampa’s father’s house inFaringdon. He told us of the farm heowned called The White Copse, andof the public house he owned calledThe White Hart. His gambling took itall away.“Grampa told me he couldremember the German dancingbears, who with their master, visitedthe White Hart every year.”One evening, an excited young ladbrought home an old yellowedauction catalogue dated WednesdayMarch 15th 1893. “Mum must have been very richthen – look at all the rooms here!”Billy opened the pages of thecatalogue which described the

seven bedrooms and the dressing room in White Copse Farm. The ground floor had a servants’ hall, a butlers’ pantry, a drawing room, a dining room, a library and an outside coach house. My mother was

fascinated by the ‘dimity’ curtains inthe bedrooms. It was the strangenames of the farm implements whichintrigued my father. What was ascuffler, a Cambridge roller or a flat-iron roller? Billy, a true animal lover, marvelled at the horses, the blackand chestnut geldings, the brown and bay mares. All had been named. There wasTurpin, Smiler, Tom and Diamond.Violet was the only roan mare.Billy was now regarded with a newsibling respect, as befitting of hisrole as custodian of the familyhistory. My father too, surprised hehad only vaguely known of hisfather’s pre-Cardiff life, found himselfturning to Billy for more information. The young boy who had hithertoshunned all outside interests, wasnow an enthusiastic boy scout, andhad joined the junior football club.So it was, all the cajolings of mymother, and all the inducements ofmy father, had done naught to cracktheir son’s shell. It was instead, arevered old gentleman with hisimpaired vision, who had seen andpenetrated his grandson’s armour, and made Billy a part of the outsideworld.

As a gardenerthough, I sympathise with you. There are many products on themarket attempting to deter cats, dogs, foxes etc from using yourgarden as a latrine. These includechemicals you pour onto the soil, markers and substances which giveoff a scent, and electronic devices. The fact that there are so manydifferent approaches tells you thatnone is very reliable, and you needto experiment to see what works inyour garden. Cats usually dislike citrus odours,so many deterrents are based onthis smell. You may find thatscattering lemon or orange peelaround an area might help. It is saidthat the dung of big cats(lions/tigers) frightens away manyanimals, including cats, rabbits anddeer. Not very easy to come by, andpossibly more unpleasant that theproblem you are trying to prevent!Physical barriers such as small twigsstuck in the ground in seed beds orstring stretched tightly a few inchesabove the ground are often effective.I use a light wooden frame coveredwith wire netting and raised on shortlegs to protect the seeds I plant inmy garden. One note of caution – there aremany electronic devices which emitan ultrasonic sound which humanscan’t hear but which cats/dogs can,and dislike. These may also affectwildlife, and you should thinkcarefully about the possibleconsequences of using them.

effects that neutering has had ontheir dogs, a variety of ‘side effects’are mentioned.Weight gain is the most common

problem that dogs experience afterneutering. Calories consumed inexcess of the daily need can eitherbe burned off as ‘waste’ heat, orstored (as fat) for later use. What anindividual’s metabolism does isdecided by factors such as breed, age, sex and others. When an animalis neutered, more of the excesscalories are stored as fat than werepreviously … but it’s only the excesscalories that are stored. You need tobe careful to monitor your dog’sweight and reduce his rations ifnecessary. We usually recommendthat when fully grown dogs areneutered, the owners immediatelyreduce the amount they are fed, onthe principle that it’s easier to gainweight if you get thin, than to lose it ifyou get fat!Another side effect of neutering is

reduced territorial marking anddefence, though the instinct to guardwill not be abolished, and thereduction in marking behaviour isusually regarded as a good thing.Dogs will also be less inclined toroam seeking a mate.Neutering is often blamed forincreasing a dog’s appetite, butthere is no evidence that this occurs.Owners of fat neutered dogs blamean increase in the pet’s appetite for the increase in weight, rather thanaccepting responsibility foroverfeeding it! Neutering is often done in theadolescent or young-adult stages of

the dog’s life, when his/herpersonality is changing as he/shematures. This gives rise to the myththat neutering causes dogs to slowdown or to calm down. It doesn’t –it’s just the development of the adultpersonality.

competition for places at the sevenveterinary schools in the UK, thoughit’s not as bad as when I went tocollege, shortly after the JamesHerriot era. The academic entryrequirements are very high – you willprobably need at least 4 grade AA-levels in the sciences. Universitiesalso look at your wider academicabilities, so it is important to have agood set of GCSE results, and otherachievements (like music or sport)are also worth having. The universitycourse is very hard, and theselectors will be looking for studentswho can perform well underpressure. In addition to your academic

qualifications, you need to be able toshow in your application foruniversity that you have a realinterest in animals and their care.Having a family pet is not enough;you need to get lots of experiencewith animals – voluntary work in ananimal sanctuary or boardingkennels, work experienceplacements in a vet, groomingparlour or similar.

Are you ready for the Welsh carrier bag charge? The Welsh Government wants to drastically reduce the number of bags given away in Wales. So from 1 October 2011, you’ll pay at least 5p for all single use carrier bags.

The carrier bag charge will apply in all shops including clothes stores, take away food outlets and restaurants, corner shops and market stalls. It will also apply when you have goods delivered in Wales, such as dot.com groceries.

You can avoid the charge by taking your own bags shopping with you.

What bags are included in the charge?

All single use carrier bags are included in the charge. This includes bags made of plastic, paper and degradable material.

What bags are not included in the charge?

Only bags used in certain circumstances, such as ones used for unpackaged food like meat, vegetables or poultry are exempt.

Bags used to carry free prescriptions or other items which are supplied free on the NHS are not included in the charge.

Any bags that are intended to be reused for example ‘bags for life’ and those made from cloth, jute, or cotton are also not included in the charge.

Why take action on carrier bags?

During 2009-10, in Wales we took home an estimated 350 million carrier bags from the major supermarkets alone. Bags are bad for the environment as they are a waste of resources, create litter and harm wildlife.

Ithink it was Tony Benn who oncesaid on television that he’dcalculated that he’d drunk enough

tea in his lifetime to float the QE2. There are several legends aboutthe origin of tea. The most prominentone involves a certain Shen Nung.As you can tell, he wasn’t a locallad. Shen was in fact, a Chineseemperor and had an fascination withherbs. The story goes that one day, there he was, boiling his water andminding his own business, whensome leaves from a nearby teashrub fluttered into his water. Beinga curious fellow, he tasted the brewand decided that it was tasty. Andso an institution was born. Clearly,he had left the lid off his kettle.By 3AD, tea was so popular in

China, that they had to invent a newword for it - ch’a (in its anglicisedform). For me and my siblings, achup-o-cha was my way of saying ‘acup of tea’. It was a staggering 1,600 yearslater before the Europeans clockedon to tea. Despite tea being a very‘British’ thing, it was in fact, theDutch who introduced tea toWestern Europe. The Dutch hadelbowed their way into thePortuguese shipping routes to theeast. The Portuguese had beenbringing some tea back in dribs anddrabs, but it was the Dutch whobrought it back en masse. It was the marriage of Charles II toCatherine of Braganza that sealedtea’s fate in Britain in the 1600s.Catherine was hopelessly addictedto tea. Even back then, the Britishpublic followed the trends of royalty. Not one to miss a trick, the EastIndia Company of London, began to import tea into Britain. Its first orderwas placed in 1664 - for 100lbs of China tea to be shipped from Java.

All this is all very well and good. But I wonder if all these historicalfigures have any idea of the delightand misery they’ve brought me viathe medium of tea.I went to see my doctor a few yearsago as I was getting palpitationspretty regularly. He asked me howmany cups of tea I drank per day. I told him. He leaned back in hisseat, bent his Biro and looked meright in the eye.“Ten cups of day Mr Morgan? I cansee exactly the reason why you’regetting palpitations. I suggest youcut down significantly on your teaintake. After a few weeks, you’ll feelthe benefits.”Thinking about giving up my teabrought me out in a cold sweat andpalpitations. I had to go home andhave a cup of tea to get over it (I’dlearnt from watching Eastenders, that if there was ever a problem, thefirst thing you should do is put thekettle on).I looked up the benefits to tea tosee if I could justify a reason fordrinking it. It was claimed thatdrinking tea has potential healthmaintenance benefits incardiovascular disease and cancerprevention. It was also apparentlyhigh in fluoride. I’d get palpitationsbut at least I’d still have teeth toclench while I had them.80% of office workers now claimthey find out more about what'sgoing on at work over a cup of teathan in any other way.Tea also contains half the amountof caffeine found in coffee. For me, the biggest benefit of tea

for many years, was the fact that itgot me out of working. I’ve hadsome very dreary call-centre jobs inmy time. Making tea became aregular way of getting off the

phones. This was in the case when Ilived in Cornwall and worked inPlymouth. I was appointed Chief TeaMaker for the entire office. Makingtea for 50 people was my kind ofwork. My success was however, mydownfall. They hired a lady calledJean, specifically to make tea. How Ihated watching her moochingaround with her stupid trolley andher beige cushioned shoes. Worse was to follow when theysacked her and replaced her with ahot drinks vending machine. And weall know what tea from them tasteslike.Tea for me these days is a crutch,as maybe a cigarette is for somepeople. I’ll happily admit that I’mprobably addicted. It’s the first thingon my mind when I wake up. Oncethe first cup of the day has beendowned, it’s on to the second. I stillprobably drink anywhere between 7and 10 cups of tea a day. These 7-10 cups have to be madein a certain way. I’ve often made themistake of accepting a cup of teafrom a friend, and been sadly letdown by the mug of elephant juice Iget handed to me.So here’s the definitive way ofmaking a perfect cuppa.1. Place a teabag in a mug.2. Boil kettle with fresh water. Watershould only be boiled once so don’tuse water that’s already been boiled.3. Pour boiling water instantly ontothe teabag. The teabag should puffup as the oxygen is released fromthe tea leaves.4. Wait until the teabag actuallysinks to the bottom of the mug. 5. Spoon out the tea bag, and addmilk to desired level. Do not stir.6. Congratulate yourself on a perfectcup of tea.Cheers.
