TRANSCRIPT

Rhode Island Department of Education Diane Girard & Colleen OBrien The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a group of states working together to develop a set of assessments that measure whether students are on track to be successful in college and their careers. PARCCs core belief is that assessments should work as a tool for enhancing teaching and learning. Beginning of School Year End of School Year Diagnostic Assessment Mid-Year Assessment Performance- Based Assessment End-of-Year Assessment Speaking and Listening Assessment OptionalRequired Key: Flexible administration Performance- Based Assessment End-of-Year Assessment After 90 percent of the school year All items are machine scored to enable quick turn around of student scores After 75 percent of the school year Extended tasks, applications of concepts and skills Items include Human and Machine Scoring to be completed on student constructed responses Beginning of School Year End of School Year All students: ELA/Literacy: Grades 3-10 Mathematics: Grades 3-8, Algebra I & Geometry Two Required Components: Performance Based Assessment (PBA) End of Year Assessment (EOY) Student Scores: PBA + EOY = Overall Student Score PARCC ELA/Literacy Model Content Frameworks ECD is a deliberate and systematic approach to assessment development that will help to establish the validity of the assessments, increase the comparability of year-to year results, and increase efficiencies/reduce costs. Claims Design begins with the inferences (claims) we want to make about students Evidence In order to support claims, we must gather evidence Task Models Tasks are designed to elicit specific evidence from students in support of claims Performance Based Assessment (PBA) Students demonstrate understanding of texts and standards Students will craft 3 Writing Samples ALL GRADES, EVERY YEAR KEY: PBA includes writing & reading End of Year Assessment (EOY) Students will demonstrate understanding of texts and standards KEY: EOY includes reading only Performance Based Assessment (PBA) End-of-Year Assessment (EOY) 75% of School Year Students garner points towards WRITING & READING score Students will complete 3 EVERY GRADE: Narrative, Literary Analysis, and Research. 90% of School Year Students garner points towards READING ONLY. Engage with Complex Texts Extract and Employ Evidence Build Knowledge Evidence Based Selected Response (EBSR) 2 Parts (usually) Technology Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR) Utilizes technology to capture student comprehension of text in authentic ways Often capturing skills previously difficult to score by machine Prose Constructed Response (PCR) Written response Can take many forms Elicits evidence that students understand a text or texts and can communication that understanding well TECR: Technology Enhanced Constructed Response PBA Texts1 Extended Literature Text 1 Additional Literature Text EBSR/TECR 6 items total 2 items measure vocabulary 4 items measure combinations of RL 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 All items aligned to RL1 & 10 PCR 1 item total Measures: All Writing Claims & One of the following: RL 2, 3, 4 (grade 10 only), 5, 6, 7, 9 All items aligned to RL1 & 10 Texts1Literature Text EBSR/TECR 5 items total Measures: combinations of RL 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 All items aligned to RL1 & 10 PCR 1 item total Measures: All Writing Claims Texts1 Extended Informational Text 2 Additional Informational Texts* EBSR/TECR 9 items total (Grade 3 has only 6 items) 3 items measure vocabulary 6 items measure combinations of RL 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 All items aligned to RL1 & 10 PCR 1 item total Measures: ALL Writing Claims & Combinations of the following: RI2 (grades 4 and 5 only), 3, 6, 7, 8, & 9 Also aligned to RL1 & 10 (*Grade 3 has only 1 Additional Informational Text) Grades 6-11 RSTs include standards: Reading Informational Text, & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects : ~RI ~RH ~RST ~Grade 3 ~Grades 4- 5 ~Grades 6-11 Engage with Complex Texts Extract and Employ Evidence Build Knowledge Students Command of Evidence with Complex Texts is at the Core of Every Part of the Assessment! Describe what students might say or do to demonstrate mastery of the standards. Articulate Reading, Writing and Vocabulary claims and the evidences to be measured on the PARCC Summative Assessment. PARCC ELA/Literacy Summative Assessment items will measure multiple standards and multiple evidences. Grade Claim Standards: RL Reading Literary RI Reading Information Evidence Statements Also include: Grades 6 11 Literacy Standards: Reading History/Social Studies & Reading Science/ Technical RH Reading History/Social Studies RST Reading Science/Technical Standards: L Language Standards: RL Reading Literary RI Reading Information Standards: W Writing Practice Tests Independently: Review PARCC Evidence Statements: Grade 6 Reading Literature (RL) and Vocabulary (RL4 and L) Determine which standard & or evidence statement is being addressed in each item of the PARCC Grade 6 Practice Test (items #1-7, LAT). With partner/group : Discuss findings. How might this experience guide your thinking about lessons and assessments aligned to the CCSS?
