Rhodes

• Rhodes is an island in Greece, located in the eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, with a population of 117,007, and also the island group's historical capital. Administratively the island forms a separate municipality within the Rhodes regional unit, which is part of the South Aegean region. The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is Rhodes. The city of Rhodes had 53,709 inhabitants in 2001. It is located northeast of Crete, southeast of Athens and southwest of the Anatolian coast in Turkey.

• Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

The name of Rhodesand other names of Rhodes island

• The name of the island from ancient times has often been connected to the name of the homonym flower, holy like the God Ilios (Sun) and thus until today Rhodes is associated with the island of Roses, in the Greek language as well as in other languages. Thus the coins of Rhodes presented on the one side the head of the God Ilios Sun and on the other side the rodon (rose). The name Rhodes is also met in the ancient Greek philological monument of Homerus the Iliad.

• According to myths and historical reports the name Rhodes did not originate by the historical era but it existed from previous populations, as well as Symi, Kalymnos, Kamiros, Attaviros etc. Taking into consideration that the name rodon (rose) of the plant comes from the same era as well as ambelos (vines), elea (oils), erevinthos etc then we conclude that the populations that were previous to the Greek population, named the island. At the same time it had more names that were connected to the vegetation, the shape and other characteristics of the island:

• Ofiousa: Because there were many snakesAsteria: Because of its sky that was full of starsTrinakria: Because its shape consists of two trianglesKorymvia: because of the shape of a corymb that ends at two summitsTelhinis: Because of its first residentsMakaria: namely happyPondia: Because of the seaEthria: Because of its beautiful climatePoiessa: Because of its rich vegetationAncient writers talk about these names: Eykratis, Diodoros, Plinios, Pindaros, Stravonas and Souda

Mythology of RhodesRhodes the nymph of iliou (sun)

• When the gods divided the earth between them, Rhodes did not show on the surface of the sea, it was immersed. Ilios (Sun) was away on his usual trip and the other gods forgot to give him a share. When Zeus heard about it he wanted to redistribute the earth. Ilios (Sun) yet did not allow him to do this , due to the fact that he could see a new region immersing from the sea and asked to be given that one. Zeus invited Lahesi to give oath that the new region would be the share of Ilios (Sun). So the beautiful island came up to the surface of the sea and they gave it to God Ilios (Sun).

• On that island God Ilios (Sun) with the nymph Rhodes had seven sons the Heliades: Ohimo, Kerkafo, Makar, Aktiona, Tenagi, Triopa, Kandalo and a daughter Ilektryoni. Kerkafos had three sons Kamiro, Ialiso and Lindo, they divided the island into three towns and each one of the sons had his own town and they named them after themselves.

• This myth that is created by persons imagination, tries to interpret the different events. The surfacing of the island of Rhodes from the ocean is relative to the subsidences, that are mentioned in Geology relatively to the forming of the land. The love of Ilios (Sun) for Rhodes is explained with the sunny days that Rhodes has nearly all year round. This is why they called Rhodes the Nymph of Ilios (Sun) and they still think of Rhodes as the daughter of Aphrodite that emerged from the ocean.

THE TELHINES – THE FIRST RESIDENTS

• The first residents of Rhodes are considered to be the Telhines, a weird race of people that were presented to be demons. Their name originates from «θέλγω» (thelgo=entice) namely charmers, magicians. They produce clouds, rain, hailstone, change shapes and are brilliant at arts. They were the first to have created statues of the Gods, in Lindo the “Appolo Telhinion” in Ialyso “Ira” and the Nymphs and in Kamiro the “Ira Telhinia”. When Poseidon reached manhood he fell in love with their sister Alia, got married to her and had six sons and a daughter called Rhodes by whom it is believed that the island acquired its name by.

• They were good sailors and also skillful craftsmen in metal work. Stravonas mentions that they came from Crete and Cyprus, something that reminds us of the early colony’s in Rhodes. The tradition presented them as wild, dark because they process metal whereas others called them “vaskanous” and “goites” and that they had divine origins. It was believed that they had Zeus grace who sent the wealth to Rhodes as gold rain and the protection of Athena who made them first in arts and they decorated Rhodes with plenty and beautiful artifacts.

The Colossus of RhodesONE OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

• The Town of Rhodes was created at the Northeast of the island in 408 BC by the union of the three towns of the island, Ialiso, Kamiro and Lindo.

• In Ancient Rhodes – the beauty of the Greek Towns – as the Historians call it, prytaneums, markets, arcades, stadiums, music schools, philosophical and rhetorical schools, five large ports and at least 3.000statues existed.

• The masterpiece of all was the colossus. It was created around 293 by Hari from Lindo, who was a student of Lysippou. It was a massive brass statue of the patron saint God Iliou (Sun), approximately 31meters high. The inhabitants of Rhodes sold (300talanda) the besieger machines of Dimitriou when he ceased the siege and left defeated then they made the statue, the construction of which remained for 12 years. The statue has been a topic of conversation for ancient people and also medieval writers. It remained in its position for 66 years and collapsed in the earthquake of 227 yet they didn’t re erect it due to their fear of some prophesy as Stravonas mentions. For 9 centuries the colossus was not re erected until 653AC when the Arabian caliph Moavias took it and sold it to a Jew from Edessa, for the brass, he needed 900 camels to transport it.

• The problem that occupies modern researchers is of were the Colossus use to stand. Misunderstanding a phrase of the epigram engraved on the base of the colossus, they said that it was positioned “not only over the ocean but also on the land” they imagined that it was positioned at the entrance of the port with its limbs open standing with one leg on the one edge of the port and with the other leg on the opposite edge of the port, while holding in its hand high up a light like a lighthouse for the ships that went past to enter the port. From the 16th century such an engraving was presented and lasts until today.

• Modern researchers believe that it was impossible for it to be positioned close to the sea and conclude that the only place that it could have been standing was the grounds of a temple and the most probable at the temple of the God Ilios (Sun) were the palace of the Grand Master of Knights is located today. A beautiful marble head of God Ilios (Sun) with broken beams that today is located in the Museum of Rhodes was found nearby. Also in the way that Stravonas describes it, it shows clearly that he saw it on land “It is now broken from the knees and fell due to the earthquake”. If it was positioned over the sea it would have been lost completely or only a part would show, something that the writer would have mentioned.

• The Colossus of Rhodes was an hymn to Art and Freedom.
