Digital storytelling allows participants to grapple with and explore their own ways of being, perceiving and understanding themselves and the world. In sharing and engaging with others in the process, participants come to understand the inherent interconnectedness of their narratives within the lifeworld that they share– this is inherent in the African philosophical conception of Ubuntu ‘I am because you are’." - Paphitis & Lindvig Social innovations (SI) are defined as "[novel] solutions (products, services, models, markets, processes etc.) that simultaneously meet a social need (more effectively than existing solutions) and lead to new or improved capabilities and relationships and better use of assets and resources. In other words, social innovations are both good for society and enhance society’s capacity to act." - Rule Accredited short courses

RHODES UNIVERSITY SOCIAL INNOVATION HUB

Fixed | Semi-fixed | Mobile | Pop-up

Located in Rhodes University Community Engagement Division, the Social Innovation Hub is

a digital storytelling resource centre that aims to make the technologies and resources

required to make digital stories, freely available to anyone who would like to share their story

or explore a novel method of collective knowledge-building.

The Hub strives towards enhancing community cohesion and providing opportunities for

members of the community to empower themselves is vital to this project. The Hub thus

facilitates the process of empowerment by addressing the digital divide in the country and

making digital tools and training opportunities accessible to the public. To this end, we

facilitate digital literacy courses, hold digital storytelling train the trainer workshops and host

story-sharing evenings to showcase the stories of the people of Makana.

What is Social Innovation?

social innovation; creating novel and creative solution to social issues, such as poverty and unemployment, that goes beyond conventional and traditional solutions, and is powered by the community or innovator’s own resources.
