Homecoming is such a huge part of our small town that you can practically feel the excitement all around. It has many layers, each one revealing more and more fun and sur- prise. It is a celebra- tion of former and current students that takes place every fall. One of the most fun aspects of homecoming is that it is one big, colorful competition where points are awarded for many different parts of the festivities. It included two weeks of parade/float build- ing in which fam- ily and friends were invited to participate. Each class was given a theme based on a chosen category. Along with the floats, there was a spirit week followed by a pep rally. Spirit week was the five days leading up to homecoming day and was full of costume fun. Monday was camouflage day, Tuesday was hat day,Wednesday was character day, Thursday was red, white and blue day and Friday was class color day. Throughout the week, each class collected cans and coins to help earn points too. The pep rally was held the Friday before the big day where the classes competed against one another in games, contests, and rowdy cheering. This is also where senior Johnnie De Lima was announced as homecoming king. His court consisted of seniors Anthony Rudzinski, Carlos Delaroca, Justin Wanckle and Dominic Kidd. The juniors won banner, the seniors won the can and coin drive and the freshmen won spirit stick. For the sport activities, the seniors won volleyball against the juniors and sophomores won against the freshman. Finally, the juniors won the relay race and the seniors won the hula hoop game. This year, the theme for floats was music genres. The seniors se- lected first and took country. After this, the juniors selected disco, the sopho- mores opted for rock and roll, and the freshman chose reg- gae. Float building began on Monday, September 30th and every float needed to be 100% completed before Friday, October 11th, at 10:30 P.M.. The float building process was both challenging and entertaining and required large amounts of skill and teamwork. Out of two weeks, there were eight evenings selected to build the float. Each class got their own garage in which to build, decorate and store their floats. The freshmen were figuring it out, the sophomores were improving, the juniors were almost experts and the seniors knew what they were doing. When asked how her first homecoming experience was, freshman, Caitlin Armstrong said, “My first homecoming experience was extremely fun and I cannot wait for the next three homecoming seasons.” Homecoming day kicked off with a parade through the wonderful town where each class unveiled their float to the community. After skits, the floats were brought to the football field where skits corresponding to each classes’ theme were performed. During this time, the judges awarded points for the presentation and float quality. First the fun and then the football! Another big part of the day was the annual football game, which drew a huge crowd and provided more excitement. Continuing the spirit of competition, the Riverside Rams fought for a victory, but were defeated 38-0 by Robinsville. During halftime, Emily Schmitt was announced as homecoming queen. The court included Rachel Armstrong, Amber Lee Jack, Maddy Scheetz and Erin Starke. Once the game was over, the crowd dispersed and the students went off to get ready for the homecoming dance which was held later that night. The dance is a culmination of two weeks worth of hard work, competition and of course fun. It is at this time where the points were tallied and the sophomores were announced as the winners with a total of 658 points. The sophomores rocked their way to the top with their rock and roll float. The freshman float brought the Reggae culture to life. The juniors boogied their way to second place with this disco themed float. One last rodeo for the seniors as they get ready to walk in their last homecoming parade.

2019 Homecoming King and Queen

Johnnie DeLima and Emily Schmitt

How long have you worked here at RHS?I’ve worked here for about 19 years!

What made you want to teach high school students spanish?Well, I love spanish and I’m very passionate about it so I thought why not teach it.

Do you think that people that have graduated have a better opportunity in learning another language than not knowing it?Yes! If they know spanish or any language they can use it for their work/jobs.

Are you interested in other cultures and languages besides Spanish and English?Yea, of course! I love all cultures and languages. I’m open to any culture.

You’re a spanish teacher, but besides that, what do you like doing in your free time? I like to spend time with family, going for walks, swimming and cooking.

Do you ever have trouble finding a good restaurant to eat at? If you do, I know the perfect restaurant for you! Chili’s is the perfect restaurant to go to when you want a delicious meal. They offers many things such as a gluten-free menu and party platters available for takeout. However, the closest Chili’s is located in Mount Laurel which is about a 20 minute drive. On Sunday, October 6th, at around 4:30 P.M, my Oma, my sister and I went to Chili’s. First, we started out with drinks. I ordered a lemonade, my sister ordered a diet coke and my Oma ordered coffee, but they didn’t have any, so she ordered water instead. After the drinks arrived, we ordered an appetizer of chips and salsa. The chips were warm and crispy. For the main dishes, I ordered boneless buffalo wings with fries, my sister ordered a burger with fries and my Oma ordered fajitas. My boneless wings had the perfect amount of sauce on it that made them hot and tasteful. My fries were crunchy and seasoned with salt and pepper. Our waiter, Dave, had a great attitude and was a good waiter. He checked up on us about every 10 minutes and made sure everything was going well. He made sure our drinks were okay and that our cups weren’t empty. When our drinks were gone, he asked if we needed refills and gave them to us. Overall, I had a great experience at Chili’s and I definitely recommend it.

Joana Aucay: Sophomore at RHS

Since it’s the beginning of the school year, what are some clubs you’re interested in?Well I’m in the interact club, I’m going to join the business club and I want to join the world language club as well, maybe even student council.

Is there anything you would like to change about the school?I would like to change the environment of the school of how in some rooms there is no air conditioner and be more modernized. I also think we should have different sports and teachers that will teach well.

Do you think Riverside high school has the best education?Sort of a good education just some teachers don’t explain things well and then students get frustrated.

How’s your experience on homecoming so far?I like how we all are interacting and helping each other. We all are working together to win and in the end everyone is united as whole class and it’s a good experience.

What’s one memory you won’t forget about RHS?How I’ve met people and how they influenced me to become a better person.

It Chapter 2 is about a group of friends coming back to their hometown, after 27 years, to fight the evil clown Pennywise. They want to stop him from ter-rorizing the town of Derry once and for all. In my opinion, I thought the movie was great! I liked how the director put the movie together. He/she made the jump scares, techniques intended to scare the people, realistic, but I thought they could’ve made them unexpected. Also, for a rated R movie I expected more graphics. On a positive note, all the characters played their parts well and the producer did a good job of making it a scary movie.

Montclair State University has a lot to offer. It’s located in Montclair, New Jersey, near the communities of Little Falls and Clifton. The class sizes are small, 30 students to a teacher, which gives the students access to more personalized assistance when needed. Montclair offers many programs, like performing arts, nursing, science and accounting programs. Academic programs include, the School of Communication and Media, The New Jersey School of Conservation and College of the Arts, which includes music among

many other programs. There are over 300 majors, minors and certificate programs, enough for anyone who is undecided to realize what they want to study. Tuition is affordable, between 6 to 10 thousand dollars per year. Montclair is also close to New York City and you can even see the skyline from campus. Montclair has easy access to several major highways. The university is located next to two train stations as well, for an easy commute. There is also a campus shuttle service in the main campus area. Montclair’s State graduate program was ranked among the nation’s best in U.S. News and World Reports 2020 Best Education Schools. Nothing beats a committed and united team. The RHS field hockey team is just that and they’ve had a very successful season so far. Since prac-tices started, the team has been working together and has been focusing on improv-ing their skills. They’re con-stantly having fun, but working and playing hard at the same time. The team’s current record is 10-5-1 and they’re confident that there will be more wins in their future. The coaches are Mrs. Brittany Bellan and Mrs. Nancy Fritz and they help and cheer on the team as much as possible. The captains, Emily Schmitt and Jacqueline Lim, are

also doing all that they can to help their fellow teammates. They are pushing the team to work harder. Elysia Espinal said “As a freshman seeing all of the upperclassmen shoot and defend well, that pushes me to work harder. It pushes me to work harder on skills like dribbling and keeping the ball on my stick so I can move it around more easily.” She and other new members of the team are getting used to the routines of the field hockey team. The team keeps a routine at practice. They start with a warm-up lap before doing stretches like lunges and leg kicks to loosen their muscles. Then, they usually do three to

five perimeters around Hooker Field. After cooling down a bit and getting water, the team shoots on goal. This allows the team to practice shooting and the goalie, Tiffany Tolo-meo, gets to practice protecting the goal. To get used to game pressure, the girls do a 3 vs. 2 scrimmage then shift to corners. The coaches go over things individually while talking about the upcoming games, practices and anything else that’s important. To end the practice, they run sprints or cages. Cages are when the entire team has to run from one end of the field to the other in under 25 seconds. This shows that they need to rely on each

other and that not only one person wins a game for them. Right now the team is looking forward to Senior Night. For the rest of the team, Senior Night is a night for them to recognize the seniors and all of the hard work and passion they put in for the team. For the freshman on the

team this is a new and exciting experience even though they have to say goodbye to some of their newly found friends and family. Another big thing the girls are looking forward to is the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The whole team enjoys the tradition and it is another way for them to bond and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The time of year that everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived, football season! The RHS Rams football team has been tirelessly working to prepare for this years’ season. Football preseason began the last week of June, where the team went over plays, wide receivers worked on routes, new members were taught the proper stance and the whole team participated in strength training.

The football captains this year are Danny Devlin, Dominic Kidd, Johnnie DeLima and Naz Parker. The staff includes head coach, Mr. Dominic Cesare, assistant coach and offensive coordinator, Mr. Robert Van Sciver, special teams coach, Mr. Chuck Kazowski, and quarterback coach, Mr. Donald Jack. Some players play multiple positions, such as senior and one of the team

captains, Johnnie DeLima. Johnnie plays both right tackle and defensive tackle. When asked which of his positions he prefers to play, Johnnie explained “I prefer right tackle because I did really good in it last year and because I get to pancake people. Boom.” The team has also been busy raising money and doing fundraisers, such as team apparel and Krispy Kreme donuts.

Football will also host their annual senior night game November 1st, 2019, against Clayton. The Rams have been up against some

tough competitors but they are keeping their heads held high and are continuing to work hard throughout the season. Their current record is 1-5-0.

Preseason for the RHS Girls’ Soccer Team started on August 12th. They practiced every day after that except on Sundays. They even practice in weather over 90 degrees. The girls were getting prepared for the games coming up. In all, they had four pre-season games. Their first

game for preseason was on August 22nd, which they won. The coach for the varsity team is Katie Morton. The captains for JV and varsity are Mia Nazario, Emily Mc-Ginely, Leo Combs and Erin Starke. For the JV team, the coaches are Ms. Katie Morton and Mrs. Michelle Simensen. On September 26th, 2019, the varsity and JV soccer

teams played against Florence. The varsity team lost the game with the score being 2-1. The JV team also lost to Florence, with the final score 1-0. The loss for Riverside was out of the conference and the Florence win was in conference. This was a very important game. If Riverside had won, they would’ve been tied in first place with Florence for
