TRANSCRIPT
Influenced by Plan Baton Rouge II, the Downtown Greenway is a 2.75 mile pedestrian and bicycling corridor that links inner city neighborhoods and expanded DDD boundaries to downtown parks, businesses, and cultural attractions utilizing the existing BREC parks, interstate infrastructure, and public right-of-ways.
Parks and Greenspaces connected by the Downtown Greenway:
Downtown Greenway at North Blvd. features a separated 10’ urban bicycle path and 5’ pedestrian garden path, median crossings, specialty pavement, curb ramps, seating areas, lighting, sculpture, water fountains, bicycle racks, and lush landscaping. Over 1,000 plants have been installed to create a botanical experience inspired by Manhattan’s famous “High Line.”
An economic stimulant, intending to spur new investments and redevelopment in the city’s core, as well as strengthen workforce opportunities by providing an alternative transportation source.
Connects to the Mississippi River Levee Trail at the recently completed Florida Riverfront Access Point, the beginning and end of the Downtown Greenway, located at the intersection of Florida Street and River Road. The Rotary Club of Baton Rouge has also secured approximately $350,000 for an interactive sculpture to be constructed at the Florida Riverfront Access Point for their centennial celebration in 2018.
Feasibility Study completed in 2010 by ABMB Engineers, Inc. and Schematic Design completed in 2012 by Spackman, Mossop, & Michaels + Tipton Associates through the EPA’s Greening America’s Capitals Program. Final design and construction plans funded though a grant provided by the Capital Area Finance Authority and completed in 2016 by Design Workshop and sub-consultants; Reich Associates, Fenstermaker, Forte & Tablada, Walter Kulash, and Chris Davala. Rotolo Consultants, Inc. was awarded and constructed the greenway at North Blvd.
Owned and operated by the City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge in conjunction with the Recreation & Parks Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) where the Downtown Greenway enters into BREC park areas.
Construction completed at Expressway Park in the spring of 2015 with a partnership between the Downtown Development District/City-Parish of East Baton Rouge & BREC. Construction has also been completed in 2015 along Myrtle Street, connecting the Lincoln Theatre to the Downtown Greenway at Expressway Park, in a partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish Redevelopment Authority.
Construction on East Blvd./TJ Jemison Blvd. and North Blvd. Town Square expected in early 2017.
