Richard Dubanoski RetiresRichard Dubanoski, who served as dean of the College of Social Sciences for the past 23 years, retired on December 31, 2011. He is the university's longest-serving dean.

Fondly remembered by many alumni as "Professor Dubanoski," Dick, as he prefers to be called, joined UH in 1969 as a psy-chology professor. Throughout his 42-year career at UH Mänoa, Dick put students first. The quality of education provided them was his paramount concern and utmost priority. His advocacy for and commitment to liberal education are well known throughout the campus and community. He remained stead-fast to ideals of leadership, and established a governance philosophy for the College of Social Sciences that emphasized collegiality and excellence.

In many arenas, Dick represented not only the Social Sciences, but also the Arts & Sciences. With an engaging personality, he was an effective ambassador of the colleges and university. He successfully established many endowments, programs, and scholar-ships, the benefits of which the university, and in particular, its students, will enjoy for generations.

Dick leaves an inspiring legacy. Along with our gratitude, we bid him fond aloha.

Konan New Dean of Social SciencesDenise E. Konan, previously a pro-fessor and chair of the Department of Economics, is the new dean of the College of Social Sciences. She served in senior executive positions as Interim Assistant Vice Chancel-lor for Academic Affairs and, sub-sequently, Interim Chancellor for UH Mänoa. Konan is the founding director for the Center for Sustainable Coastal Tourism within UH Mänoa’s Sea Grant program.

Konan has held numerous consultant positions for international entities such as the World Bank in Washing-ton, D.C.; the Ministry of Economy in Cairo, Egypt; Ministry of Interna-tional Trade and Investment in Tunis,

Rising Cost of Higher Education

Tunisia; Ministry of Finance in Saudi Arabia; and the Hawai‘i De-partment of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Konan was very involved with last year's Asia-Pacific Economic Coop-eration summit, having served as senior advisor to UH President M.R.C. Greenwood.

Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw remarked, “Dr. Konan clearly has impressive expertise, academic and administrative experience, and strong recognition in the global economic arena, so we enthusiasti-cally welcome her leadership in this new capacity."

The University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents approved a five-year tuition schedule proposal presented by the UH administration to begin in fall 2012 and run through spring 2017. In recognition of the state’s cur-rent fiscal situation and the resulting impact on stu-dents and their families, the tuition schedule proposed modest increases.

“This has been one of the toughest issues we have taken on in our service as Regents,” said UH Board of Regents Chair Eric Martinson. “We are well aware of the economic struggle that many Hawai‘i families are experiencing. We made this decision with the best interests of Hawaii's citizens and our only public higher education institution in mind, and with the cer-tainty that accompanying increased financial aid and outreach counseling will continue to make a college degree accessible to all who desire it.”

The university sustained over $86 million in cuts to its core operating budget over the last two years. During this same period, enrollment increased to a record high of 60,000 students, an increase of 14,000 students from a decade ago.

“The university has made every effort to preserve ser-vices that directly impact students and has made sig-nificant adjustments in its operations to address these budget cuts, including salary reductions, hiring freezes, travel restrictions, energy conservation, and other mea-sures,” said UH President M.R.C. Greenwood. “In the meantime we have made extraordinary efforts to, in the face of declining public dollars, pursue and win grants and extramural funding that have gone directly into programs and opportunities to benefit our students."

Established in 1907 and fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the University of Hawai‘i is the state's sole public system of higher education. The UH System provides an array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees and community programs on 10 campuses and through educational, training, and research centers across the state. UH enrolls more than 56,000 students from Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, and around the world. For more information, visit www.hawaii.edu.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The new year is well underway; please pardon our belated good wishes to you. Given that we have only two visits with you each year (through Ke Kumu 'Ike), we have to seize the opportunities when we can. As such, we are devoting a substantial portion of this issue to acknowl-edge and thank you for your gifts over the past couple of years. The Arts & Sciences are so fortunate to receive your support, which has been generous, unwavering, and thoughtful. Please know that we appreciate every single gift and are dedicated to using donations with the same meaningful spirit in which they were given. This is our obligation, our commitment, and our privilege.

New years mean new beginnings. Our colleague Dick Dubanoski's retirement from the Social Sciences dean-ship marks both an end and the start of an era. We have learned immensely from him and will carry that knowl-edge forward as we continue to strengthen the impact of the Arts & Sciences on this campus--and beyond.

Though the changes of the new year have begun in many regards, there are some things that will never change. Chief among them, is our commitment to students. As the cost of higher education continues to rise at institutions throughout the United States, it is imperative that we provide an excellent education and experience to all who pass through our halls. As an analogy, students are the customers and we are the store. Not only do we intend to attract the customers into the store, but also provide 100% satisfaction and earn long-term loyalty. We take seriously the facts that students and their families entrust us to deliver an outstanding product and service, and pay hard-earned dollars for them.

Whether in a robust or down economy, our support for students, much like your contributions to the Colleges of Arts & Sciences, will not falter. We may have to re-arrange, re-prioritize, or re-budget, among a host of other "re-s," but that is not unlike any other successful business. After all, there are many competitors out there, and we are glad that you have chosen the Colleges of Arts & Sci-ences to fulfill your educational goals.

Sincerely,

Thomas R. Bingham

We are pleased to acknowledge donors who made contributions to Arts & Sciences programs from January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2011 via the UH Foundation. There are many organizations to which you can donate; we are grateful that you chose the colleges. We also acknowledge do-nors who made gifts less than $100, and recognize the importance of these thousands of gifts, but could not publish the names here in the interest of space.

President’s Message Aloha Friends, In the few months since I spoke to you last via Ke Kumu 'Ike much has happened to make me realize more than ever how much the University of Hawai'i means to people and how their support never ceases to amaze me. These experiences have been both heartwarming and humbling. Let me explain.

Last September CASAA held its 7th annual wine pairing dinner at Kapi'olani Com-munity College's Ka 'Ikena Dining Room and raised over $13,000. I might add that KCC's culinary program is superb and we're proud to showcase their talented faculty (chefs Warren Uchida and David Brown), staff (David Miyamoto and Kevin Donnelly), and students. What began as an intimate event seven years ago to raise a few dollars for annual scholarships has transformed into an event that raises serious money for an important endowment fund. I'm happy to say that the dinner remains an intimate affair in that attendance rarely exceeds 100, many of whom look forward to the get-together year after year. Between these dinners and your mail-in contributions when you kindly reply to CASAA's letters asking for donations, the endowment has grown to over $86,000. In total, CASAA raised al-most $300,000 in endowments over the past 10 years, an impressive figure, thanks

to the generosity of friends like you. Whether you're a friend or a CASAA member (membership fees help CASAA pay for operations and are distinct from scholarship funding), your gifts are making a big impact. Heartwarming and humbling, indeed.

Last October I had the great privilege of visiting Ver-mont thanks to the gracious invitation and hospitality of alumna Leta Finch ('74, BA) and her husband, Bill Ryerson. They showed that the aloha spirit is thriving in beautiful New England as they opened their lovely home for a brunch for graduates living in Vermont and New Hampshire. [By the way, this is the second time they hosted CASAA for a special occasion. Several years ago, Leta and Bill's house was a most enjoyable luncheon stop on the CASAA New England travel tour.]

The kindred spirits of UH alumni inspired fond memo-ries, created sore cheeks from endless smiles and laughter, and established new relationships. As Algene "Gene" Bailey ('73, BA), a non-traditional student while attending UH mentioned, he never thought he would get together with fellow graduates, again. He appreciated the rare opportunity that Leta provided and spoke of its meaningfulness while evoking emotions among all. He and his wife, Mary, drove three and a half hours from New Hampshire to attend! The truth of the matter is, these opportunities won't be so rare because Leta is already planning the next get-together. So, Gene, we'll see you, again. Heartwarming and humbling, indeed.

My warmest aloha, Bernadette Baraquio, '94, BA

Department of Information and Com-puter Sciences associate professor Scott Robertson was awarded a four-year, $948,537 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the use of social networks and new media in political deliberation, voter decision-making, and civic participation. Use of the internet and social net-working sites to get information about politics is increasing dramatically, especially among young people. It is important to understand what infor-mation people are getting from social software and how it influences their opinions and choices. The grant will support two graduate students and a post-doctoral researcher. The team will study how

Major Grant Supports Social Network Study people use social software to find in-formation, measure how social infor-mation influences the understanding of traditional media, and observe how social information influences choices. One part of the research will follow people through several election cycles and changes in technology. The team will also design better online searching, browsing, and deliberation tools. Bet-ter tools in the area of digital politics will broaden opportunities for civic participation in the 21st century. Robertson serves as the director of the

Hawai'i Computer-Human Interaction Lab on cam-pus. He has a PhD in cognitive psychology from Yale University.

Physics Professor Receives Homeland Security GrantAssistant professor of physics, Sven E. Vahsen, received $174,820 from the Department of Home-land Security. Vahsen’s award is for continued development of a new type of particle detector for Homeland Security, future particle physics experiments, and dark matter searches. The ongo-ing project is expected to bring in excess of $500,000 to UH Mänoa.

Vahsen and his collaborators are working on a de-tector that can record the trajectories of electrically charged particles in three dimensions, with unprec-edented precision. While advances in this area are needed for future experiments in particle physics, the same underlying technology may also enable

the directional detection of neutral particles, such as dark matter particles left over from the Big Bang, and neutrons from nuclear material.

This award was enabled by support from the National Science Foundation, and generous startup fund-ing provided jointly by the UH Vice President for Research, UH Mänoa Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education,

and the Dean of the UH Mänoa College of Natural Sciences.

Vahsen was hired from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2010, and received his doctorate in physics from Princeton University in 2003.

Madey to Receive the Robert R. Wilson Prize The American Physical Society (APS) recently announced that Physics Pro-fessor John Madey will be awarded the APS 2012 Robert R. Wilson prize "for the invention and first experimental demonstration of the free electron laser and important contributions to its con-ceptual development." The prize will be presented to Madey at the APS April 2012 meeting in Atlanta.

The prestigious Robert R. Wilson Prize was established in 1986 to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in the physics of particle accelerators. Robert R. Wilson was an iconic American physicist who lead the effort in creating the Fermi National Ac-celeration Laboratory and served as its director from 1967-1978.

Madey received both a BS degree in physics and an MS degree in quantum electronics from the Califor-nia Institute of Technology. He then went to Stanford

to pursue his doctoral degree. While at Stanford as a graduate student, Madey invented the Free-Electron Laser (FEL) and published the seminal paper on the theory of FEL operation. These lasers are powerful tools for research in medi-cine and biology, electronic materials, nuclear physics, and manufacturing by virtue of their high power and coher-ence and ability to operate at wave-lengths at which no other light sources are available.

After receiving his PhD in 1970 from Stanford, he accepted a National Re-

search Council Postdoctoral Fellowship and led the effort at Stanford to develop the first FEL amplifiers and oscillators. Madey was appointed as a profes-sor of electrical engineering at Stanford in 1986. In 1988, Madey was recruited by Duke University to start their FEL Program. In 1998, Madey left Duke and came to UH Mänoa to start the UH FEL program.

Ho-min Sohn, professor of Korean language and linguistics, has been cited by the Republic of Korea government for his contributions to the study of the Korean language. Sohn received his cultural medal and citation, signed by President Lee Myung-bak, last October in Seoul.

A teacher in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures for four decades, Sohn is an author-ity on Korean linguistics, specializing in phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolin-guistics, and Korean language education. He joined the university faculty in 1971, having earlier worked for the Republic of Korea Ministry of Education and having taught at several universities in Korea.

Did you know . . .that Johnson Hall, Manoa's oldest residence facility, was named after John Alexander “Jack” Johnson Jr.? Johnson, an active student leader, graduated in 1935 with degrees in economics and business. Built in 1958, Johnson Hall recently underwent a $6.7 million reconstruction project.

Called to active duty with the National Guard in 1940, Johnson was one of the few non-Nisei members of the famous 100th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action during the Battle of Cassino, a pivotal and costly series of battles waged by Allied forces with the goal of breaking through German lines and seiz-ing Rome.

Speaking of Nisei veterans, the Colleges of Arts & Sciences congratulate the surviving members of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regi-mental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service who were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, our nation's highest civilian award, last November.
