They live permanently in Cuenca, Ecuador. In response to the hospitality of the local region’s community in year 2010 the couple started a few businesses to help and support the local businesses.

Their first project was their Gold and Silver shop. They sponsored the Christmas Gold for children program. That’s how they started raising funds just in time for Christmas for three orphanage projects. After the huge success of this project Richard Verkley decided to formalize his work and established the Hearts of Gold Foundation. He decided to give a percentage of all of his profits to the charity.

The main goal the Hearts of Gold is to educate people and provide them necessary tools to break the poverty cycle. The organization carries out projects and programs through Ecuador to help families and local communities.
