Planting a new garden

This financial year was my first as President. I knew that the road ahead was going to take a big effort, but with the committee and the support and drive of our executive team and the enthusiasm of our members, we have planted a garden. • We worked very hard to make sure that the heavy financial losses of the two

previous years were not repeated and as you will see in our financial reports to be delivered at the AGM, we are back in the black and budgeting effectively.

• To minimise risk and maximise the Chamber’s resources, we brought the management of the markets in house and appointed a new market manager. This has proven to be a very wise decision with growth in demand from stallholders up, attendance up and management systems in place. The market is enjoying a growing reputation among tourists and locals.

• We have been working very hard to make sure that our voice is heard at all levels of Government with Bill Darby working on the State Government’s liquor licencing task force and on Council’s Economic Development task force as well as joining the SCDL board giving us a place at the tourism table and

myself being appointed as the Chairman of the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance, to make sure we get our fair share of infrastructure and resources.

• We have and will continue to work to build ongoing engagement with Stockland and the Kawana Health Hub so we are at the table when it comes to the messages that are sent out affecting our future residents and work force and all of the planning issues that may arise from upcoming growth.

• We have made local business competiveness a priority by bringing fantastic business speakers to town to share new and effective ways for businesses to improve their bottom line.

• We are working with events that bring visitors to our great region and we have really hit a big one with 25,000 plus people coming for Tough Mudder Sunshine Coast. We also love the events for locals, like the Caloundra Foreshore Fun Run.

We will continue to work hard on the issues that need addressing. We will nurture our garden and plant more seeds. I look forward to sharing with you further at our AGM on the 9th September.

are We china ready? – Part two Tourism and Events Chair Bill Darby

In the last edition of Buzz, we posed the question; are we China ready? Not surprisingly, this seemingly simple question demands a less than simple answer. Much like most things China, within this question rests great complexity, and only specialists in this field of study know the half of it. For our part, let’s look at where the Sunshine Coast is placed leading into the “Asian century”.

Infrastructure Development and InvestmentWhen it comes to attracting Chinese infrastructure investment generally, we really need to get our ducks in a row. Clearly, Australia and China are politically different. In Chinese cities, the Mayor is appointed by the Communist Party and is effectively able to dictate regional economic policy. In Australia’s contrasting democracy, we don’t have the efficiency that comes with supreme power. Before we make decisions, we require stakeholder engagement, debate and respect for divergent views. One can imagine that this arduous and often protracted approvals process would appear clumsy to Chinese industrialists.

The Sunshine Coast doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to streamlined approval processes and flexible planning guidelines. Somewhat less, is our collective vision on the amount of development that is even suitable for the Sunshine Coast. This was evidenced in a recent reader poll conducted by the Sunshine Coast Daily, where 50% of respondents said China was not a good match for investment for the region. The Council (and many other stakeholders) have come to realise that welcoming Chinese investment doesn’t mean “selling out” or in any way diluting our own cultural relevance. Properly managed, it can simply mean better infrastructure and more jobs resulting in higher standards of living. Let’s be clear though, unless we remove much of the red tape and barriers to commercial viability, the Chinese won’t seriously consider us as an option to begin with.

EducationIf ever a region was well placed to gain advantage by providing education services to foreign students, the Sunshine Coast is it. In addition to a number of well-credentialed private education providers, the Sunshine Coast has a TAFE College offering tuition in a broad range of subjects and a university with an exceptional reputation for high quality teaching. Accredited with a five-star student satisfaction rating, USC is ranked the highest in Queensland.

As the rapidly growing middle class in China seeks better opportunities for the next generation, parents are actively seeking a quality western education abroad for their children. Australia is considered to be a clean, politically stable

and safe destination and we are a country that has been educating Chinese students for decades. With second and third tier cities in China emerging, affordable education services outside our capital cities in the disciplines of health, engineering, languages and environmental sciences will continue to grow in demand. The challenge for the Sunshine Coast is to ensure we are visible to the Chinese market in this increasingly competitive space and that we are viewed as a welcoming and friendly destination. In return we will be rewarded with cultural diversity, better funded education services for our own kids and a whole new source of tourism revenue through visiting friends and relatives. According to Brisbane’s Griffith University, 70 per cent of international students have two or more friends and two or more family members visit them while studying in Australia.

TourismFindings from a recent Tourism Australia research project indicate that when selecting a holiday destination Chinese visitors are wanting (in order of importance): natural beauty, safety and security, good food and wine, friendly and open locals and native and cultural heritage activities. If we relate these preferences to the Sunshine Coast, it’s clear we tick all the boxes but this doesn’t mean we are China ready. It just means there is nothing stopping us from becoming China ready.

Having evolved over five millennia, the Chinese have an acute sense of association and belonging. To feel comfortable, they need to sense a connection to community and to their surroundings. Unless the whole Sunshine Coast embraces the idea of sharing our region with the Chinese and in turn prepares our tourism infrastructure for Chinese visitors, it will be a long time before we see any real economic benefit. To achieve this, tourism providers will need to work closely with their industry groups to learn about the cultural requirements of Chinese visitors, just like the Chinese have done so respectfully to accommodate westerners. Providing basic translation services, Chinese credit card facilities and meeting simple dietary requirements are obvious considerations. Improved levels of hospitality, being more racially accepting and appreciating the richness of Asian culture also wouldn’t go astray.

Forging a pathway to ensure the Sunshine Coast maximises any future opportunities from the wealth of China is our challenge, should we choose to take it up. This is however, a decision we all need to make collectively and there is a lot to be done. The resources necessary to promote our unique offering and build equity in brand “Sunshine Coast” will not be insignificant. If over time, we can build on the foundation we already have with our Chinese neighbours, who knows what opportunities might lay ahead.

maJor EVENT

In 2006 Richie Eyles met with then Mayor of Caloundra, Don Aldous, to talk about the possibility of creating a music festival in Caloundra.“Don envisaged a ‘jazz festival’ that would put Caloundra on the map,” Eyles recalls.

A little less than a year later, the first three- day Caloundra Music Festival was held at Kings Beach, with an audience of about 5000 (mostly) locals enjoying acts like jimmy Barnes, Ross Wilson, Darryl Braithwaite and Mark Seymour.

October 2013 marks the 7th Caloundra Music Festival.

“The event has experienced spectacular growth in its first six years,” Eyles says.

“This year the festival will run for 11 days; it will aim to attract an aggregate attendance greater than 80,000 and contribute the equivalent of around 60 full time jobs to the local economy.”

Despite the vagaries of organising and running a huge festival, Eyles has nothing but enthusiasm for making it bigger and better each year.

“I reckon I have the best job in the world” he says, referring to his role as festival manager.

What makes the Caloundra Music Festival stand out is its family-friendly approach and a program which appeals to a broad demographic, Eyles says.

“My own musical tastes are a bit old-school - I lean towards soul, R&B, blues, funk, jazz, Motown and the like, but there are plenty of young people on the team too. They make me listen to triple j at work.

“And the family always have commercial radio on in the house and car. Between us all we ensure that CMF has something to suit most tastes.

“I think one of the best things about the Caloundra Music Festival is the fact we are appealing to a broad demographic.

“People enjoy the diverse music on offer, but also love the festival being right on the beach, and being able to bring their kids along.”

But we’re all a product of our upbringing, and much of Eyles’ background is linked with the US and New Orleans, he says.

“We have had some top acts over the past six years, including Powderfinger on their farewell tour, the John Butler Trio, Ben Lee, Icehouse, Jimmy Barnes, Empire of the Sun and a heap of others.

“To be honest however, I have been more excited about presenting acts like Tower of Power, Booker T, Allen Toussaint, Jon Cleary, Trombone Shorty and Galactic.”

Eyles has been involved in the music scene for as long as he can remember. After leaving school he completed a music degree at the Sydney Conservatorium, and later undertook studies at the Canberra School of Jazz.

“I reckon I played every two- bit bar, nightclub, restaurant and pub in the country.”

The comment under his photo in his high school yearbook states “The two things I love most are music and Sharyn”.

“Not much has changed in the past 30 years,” he says.

Richie, wife Sharyn and their family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2003 following a stint working in the USA as a choirmaster working with young Afro-American and Hispanic kids.

Richie has recently been getting asked to play with some young bands again.

“Unfortunately I’m 25 years older than the guys I’m playing with,” he says with a grin.

In addition to performing and teaching, Eyles has spent time in technical roles, running an entertainment venue, building and operating recording studios and running a booking agency.

maJor EVENT

“I’ve been working on my MBA at University of the Sunshine Coast for the past four or five years.

“I’m hoping to finish before I retire.”

Eyles calls upon his creative talents, industry knowledge and business acumen to steer the Caloundra Music Festival towards a bright future.

“One of the things that sets CMF apart is the fact that it is held in the busy tourism precinct of Kings Beach,” he says.

“This means people can leave the festival site to visit local restaurants and shops, and easily walk to the event from local accommodation houses.

“This is different to many other festivals, which are often held out of town, where the only place for people to eat, drink, sleep and shop is inside the festival gates.

“This is the major reason CMF is seen to be such a boon for the local economy. Many local restaurants and businesses are saying that CMF is their busiest time of the year, even bigger than Christmas time.”

“Our proximity to Brisbane, the large amount of holiday accommodation available nearby, the beautiful beachside location and the support of the local community – especially our volunteers – augers well for a great future.”

Last year saw the introduction of the Caloundra Fringe Festival.

“With the development of the Fringe Festival we are now looking to open up the spectrum of activities to include other music genres cultural activities such as dance, art, film, crafts, food, wine, produce and more,” Eyles says.

“This year we are partnering with Kim McCosker and her 4 Ingredients team to deliver our first food and wine component of the festival – and there are many more plans in the making.”

In our last edition of Buzz we spoke about the importance of relationships in business. Thinking outside of the box about who you can partner with and how you can both benefit from the partnership is the next stage. This story takes a look at some Caloundra businesses who are building their business platforms through strategic alliances.

Cindy and Anthony Steele are relatively new to Caloundra after moving here for a sea change from Sydney, packing up their two kids and Top Gear Security business in the shift. Cindy, a marketing and networking guru, went immediately to work in Caloundra looking at possible strategic alliances for the business.

Top Gear Security joined the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Caloundra Connect Networking Group, and paired up with Westpac bank as well as Sandbar Café & Kiosk, Universal Hair Studio and Red Hot Chilli Pepper. What do they all have in common? They are local businesses who promote and help each other directly or indirectly.

A great example of this is that when you install a security alarm and have it back to base for your home or business, you can receive a discount on your Westpac home & contents insurance, as well as your business insurance? So Westpac now promote Top Gear Security and vice-versa. It makes perfect sense with both parties cross promoting and the customer gaining in the process.

Rebecca Jones, Branch Manager of Westpac Caloundra said that they have formed a strong alliance with Top Gear Security which has and will continue to be mutually beneficial for both involved.

“Westpac has been promoting Top Gear Security through our Business of the Month display board located in the front foyer of our branch. Through talking to customers about physical protection options and how this aligns with what insurance cover they have in place, we are getting a good response.

“Recently Top Gear Security and Westpac also joined forces and had strong representation at the Sunshine Coast Business Expo which saw both businesses generate a number of leads from this event. When you build trusting relationships with businesses it is very easy to promote one another” Mrs Jones said.

Sandbar Café & Kiosk have a more indirect strategic alliance with Top Gear Security. The relationship works on positive referrals to each other’s business, as they have used each other’s services and feel comfortable referring friends and clients. Richard and Steve, owners of Sandbar Café & Kiosk, understand the importance of strategic alliances and think they are especially useful in regional areas.

“Another good example is the alliance we began last year with Rumba Resort & our other close Bulcock Beach traders to put on the Rumba Carnivale, as part of the Caloundra Fringe Festival. We had fantastic customer feedback last year so we are working together again this year to make it happen” Richard said.

Local, well known photographer Alicia Aberley connected with Cindy at a networking event. Cindy and Alicia now have a strong bond and continuously develop their strategic alliance. Cindy promoted Alicia Aberley Photography through a new health focussed networking group which helped Alicia drum up some business. Cindy also introduced Alicia to Sandbar Café & Kiosk knowing that she wanted to get more into food and product photography.

So what do spices and security have in common? Nothing, but by promoting Vicki Taylor’s Red Hot Chilli Pepper business via Cindy’s local speaking engagements on the ‘art of networking’, Cindy has been able to give away some spice packs as lucky door prizes which gives Red Hot Chilli Pepper further local branding. Vicki herself is a master of business alliances, and the founder of Caloundra Connect a regular business networking breakfast.

Cindy’s best tip to help you form great strategic alliances in your business is to start ‘thinking outside the box’. Take a moment to reflect on who you’ve met, and how you can work together either directly or indirectly to promote each other’s business. As long as you are both on the same page, have a written plan that’s a win-win, the world is truly your oyster!

top tip

Cindy believes that strategic alliances aren’t about mentoring or prospecting, but they do share elements of both:

• They are about learning from each other.

• They are sometimes about cross-selling to each other’s customers.

• They are about sharing all kinds of resources, experience, and history.

A megatrend is a significant shift in environmental, economic and social conditions that will play out over the coming decades. The indicative time frame of the analysis is 20 years; this publication is perfect in considering just what we want to achieve through our own Queensland Plan.

the six trends are as follows: 1. More from less2. Going, going, gone3. the silk highway4. Forever young5. Virtually here6. Great expectations

In breaking down these trends to see how they apply to Caloundra, it is easy to see the potential our area holds for the future.

our future worldAt the Queensland Plan summit held in Mackay in May this year, delegates were presented with the CSIRO’s publication entitled ‘Our future world: Global Megatrends that will change the way we live’.

our future world“More from less” explores how companies, governments and communities will discover new ways of ensuring quality of life for current and future generations within the confines of the natural world’s limited resources.

Everyone can play a role in this, perhaps this is where we need to examine our lifestyle patterns and begin working towards conserving the resources available to us not just in Caloundra but in Australia.

“Going, going, gone” acknowledges the rich natural habitats, plant species and animal species that are in decline or at risk of extinction. In Caloundra we have a bio diverse area that needs our care and attention.

The Pumicestone Passage with all its flora and fauna for instance, a majestic piece of the natural world, but in order to maintain and preserve this we need to appreciate and assist groups such as Take Action for Pumicestone Passage (TAPP) and enthusiastic conservationists.

“the silk highway” discusses a shift towards China and India. In order to capitalise on this market, Caloundra needs to start working towards strengthening our tourism and cultural ties. We live in a truly beautiful part of the world and tourism is an important part of our lifestyle, we need to ensure we’re encouraging this growth.

“Forever young” is most important for our region as it acknowledges the ageing population as an asset.

Older citizens provide a wealth of skills, knowledge, wisdom and mentorship. A way forward to cohesively work with older Queenslanders while inspiring our youth is definitely something to put into action.

“Virtually here” This megatrend explores what might happen in a world of increased connectivity where individuals, communities, governments and businesses are immersed into the virtual world to a much greater extent than ever before. Expanding upon this megatrend is well under way, with organisations such as the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and the various business networks and community groups coming together and sharing their ideas.

The last megatrend, “Great Expectations” has implications for the Australian retail sector and human service delivery systems of government and private sector organisations.

People of the future will have expectations for more personalised, better and faster services. This is a perfect opportunity for business owners, operators, entities and us to begin discussing how they can address this need now before it becomes critical.

CSiRo’s publication entitled ‘our future world: Global Megatrends that will change the way we live’ can be found on the CSiRo website at www.csiro.au.

touriSm UPDATE

GLENN’S UPDATEThis month, Caloundra Downs will be transformed into a military training style obstacle course for one of the world’s toughest events – the Tough Mudder.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the hundreds of visitors who will flock to compete in the event for the next three years.

Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd. (SCDL) has worked with local operators to put together event packages for Tough Mudder and other regional events.

Also in local tourism news, return flights from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast with Air New Zealand are well underway.

With a longer season than last year – flights are every Tuesday and Sunday until the 13th of October – giving plenty more opportunities for Kiwi tourists to visit the region.

The season also coincides with major events such as the Caloundra Music Festival and SCDL has worked with Air New Zealand to offer 100 free tickets to passengers.

Finally, our Visitor Information Centres are recruiting volunteers. If anyone would like to spend time helping provide visitors to our region with an exceptional experience I would love to hear from you.

For those tough enough, the tough Mudder is held one week before the Seven Sunshine Coast Marathon, giving participants back-to-back opportunities to push themselves to the limit.

For a more unique racing experience, sign up for the Sunshine Coast’s Colour Run, a paint race where runners of all abilities are doused in different colours at each kilometre.

getting to KnoW you TIDeS wATeRFROnT DInInG

Tides Waterfront Dining in Caloundra was this year presented with an Australian Good Food Guide Chef Hat and Wine Goblet Award. We speak to the owner, Michael Mulhearn, to find out more about the man behind this highly successful restaurant.

How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast?

We moved to the Sunshine Coast 12 years ago and have since married in Caloundra and now have two beautiful daughters who keep us quite busy.

Why did you join the hospitality industry?

I started by chance, previously working for Pizza Hut as a delivery driver while completing my business degree. I was promoted into Pizza Hut’s corporate trainee course and quickly realised I didn’t enjoy working in an office with four walls. When I got the opportunity to come to the Coast, and run a café, I jumped at the chance and have never looked back.

Have you always worked in hospitality?

Yes going on 18 years now. It has its ups and downs like any job, but getting to meet different people every day is fantastic and the office window I have now, would compete with anyone’s in the world.

What do you enjoy most about the hospitality industry?Meeting different people - every day there’s a new customer to talk to and you form strong bonds with other hospitality staff. The hours we work create a unique culture of people who enjoy their weekends on a Monday and Tuesday.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? Caloundra’s Happy Valley is great for the kids because there’s a huge park and access to safe waters. Personally, I love the Sunshine Coast’s golf courses – we have two that are consistently ranked among the best in Australia.

Favourite thing to do? Play a round of golf with friends or watch a good movie with my family.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your role? Meeting and dealing with the different personalities and keeping a high consistent standard for our guests to enjoy.

Greatest achievement of 2013? We were very proud of Tides earning its First Chefs Hat and Wine Goblet - awards that have never been received in Caloundra before. It inspires us to maintain our high standards.

What makes the Sunshine Coast naturally refreshing for you? There’s always something to do whether it’s enjoying the beautiful sunshine or chilling out on a rainy day with a nice glass of Pinot Noir.

better BUSINESS

the definition of insanity

by Martin Grunstein

Albert Einstein was the first to say the definition of insanity was to do the same thing every year and expect different results.

If that’s the case, I believe most businesses in this country are insane!

Let’s use the humble Christmas card as an example.

Over 90% of businesses in this country send some form of Christmas card or greeting to their clients every year. I say “stop doing that!”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m the last person to cut back on the generation of goodwill but I believe there is a better way to spend the money.

Let me explain.

If your clients are anything like my clients, they probably receive a hundred cards at Christmas and the majority of them go in the bin (trust me, it’s most likely one of yours). So, I stopped

sending Christmas cards years ago. I now send “Happy November 27” cards!

I get a card printed that says on the front “Happy November 27” and when you open it up it states “I bet you get a lot of cards wishing you happy December 25. How many do you receive wishing you happy November 27? Well, happy November 27”. I send a card to my clients and the people that I’ve met and want to do business with in the next twelve months. I also write a small personal note on each card.

I follow the card up with a “how’s things” phone call and I find out that all of my clients get heaps of cards on December 25 and they don’t remember who sent it to them but my clients all get ONE card on November 27 and every one of them remembers who sends it to them. My best early result from the cards was in 1994 when I generated over $20,000 of seminar work from the cards.

The point I’m making is do something different. Don’t just do things because you’ve always done

them. Challenge yourself to defend why you’re doing it and more importantly, is there a better way to get an improved result?

But I also want to make a key point about follow up.

I believe less than half of the people that I send a November 27 card to and follow up with a call, would have contacted me if I didn’t approach them each year.

I don’t make money out of November 27 cards, I make money from following up November 27 cards. It is the lifeblood of my business and it can easily work in yours as well.

I challenge you to take a long, hard look at the way you do your business and if you’re not doing anything different from one year to the next, even if it is sending out November 27 cards instead of Christmas cards, and you’re expecting different results ... YOU’RE INSANE!

Matthew and Sharynne Wilson made the move from Sydney share trading to running a Moffat café that they relaunched and renamed, Blackwater trading Co. Another newcomer to the Moffat strip is the funky pocket Espresso Bar. Esther and Johnny have created a pumping little sit in or take away coffee club. It’s great to see the new blend with old favourites like Café by the Beach and Sunny’s on Moffat still going strong. And, it’s not just all about where to eat and drink. Moffat has some other great stores with homewares, art and of course fashion. Shine Boutique has been building a loyal following with their young, hip clothing range since 2001.

STALLHOLDER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Sweet Revolution began in April this year due to Shelley and Shannah Brown’s love of baking. Although they have other careers the girls decided it was time that their passion for baking became part of their weekly routine, and Sweet Revolution was formed. The girls are now part of the Markets on Bulcock each Sunday, and their delicious treats are running off the shelf.

Sweet Revolution is all about baked goods, just like the home-made cakes that nanna used to make, baked from scratch, some with a modern twist. Their main products are cupcakes, loaf cakes, delicious slices and their new, popular melting moments. Flavours vary each week so there is something new and exciting to try.

Some of the cupcake flavours that you might see include gooey choc caramel, lemon meringue, cookies and cream, and the well-known very vanilla. Is your mouth watering at the sound of these delicious treats? You can find Sweet Revolution at the Markets on Bulcock each Sunday and trust us; you won’t miss it with their enticing stall with rows of cupcakes and cakes.

Shelley and Shannah love the vibe and energy of the Markets on Bulcock and have found their business is increasing more and more each week with regulars coming back for more, plus new visitors to the market can’t resist the tempting sight of these delicious treats. For those gluten free or dairy free people out there, you don’t have to miss out; there are also mouth-watering treats for you at Sweet Revolution.
