Term 2 2019

Hi everyone! Time flies when you are having fun. It seems like it was

only yesterday that I welcomed all of you back to school. Now, Term 2

is ending as we usher in the June Holidays.

I proudly present “RICHIE’S BULLETIN 2019/2, the termly newsletter

which captures some of the rich learning experiences in TKPS.

Enjoy reading!

Prefects’ Camp 2019 – Camp LaPS (Leaders as Problem Solvers)

The annual Prefects’ Camp is an important platform for newly appointed prefects and appointed prefects to

bond and build camaraderie. On top of that, the activities planned during the camp enabled the prefects to

hone their leadership skills and be a better leader.

This year, the theme “Leaders as Problem Solvers” was chosen with the intent to equip the prefects with

problem-solving skills. Prefects were also reminded to always approach problems with different perspectives

so that they can empathise and understand the situation in order to find the best solution. The value of

resilience was highlighted as initial failure experienced should never be an obstacle to one’s success.

Alumni Senior Prefects and the P6 Senior Prefects were the facilitators for some of the activities, thus

providing the prefects with the opportunity to learn from their seniors. The prefects went through team

bonding activities which challenged them to step out of their comfort zone. Through these activities, they

learnt more about themselves and developed teamwork.

Some prefects displayed exceptional leadership qualities in leading others and these prefects were

eventually appointed as the new batch of senior prefects of 2019.

P4 CDP Forest Adventure 2019

In Singapore, where it is a dense concrete jungle, it may seem difficult to find some unique outdoor fun.

Lucky for us, all hope is not lost. Just a short drive from our school is Forest Adventure, Singapore’s largest

tree top adventure park.

Located in the heart of Bedok Reservoir Park,

Forest Adventure is Singapore’s first and only

tree top course. It boasts 69 new crossings and 6

zip lines, along with 3 appropriate rope courses

for children of all ages. This tree top obstacle

course comprises obstacles made of wood and

rope, and suspends from platforms of varying

heights among the trees of Bedok Reservoir Park.

The objective of this obstacle is to move from one

platform to another until you reach the end.

This year, a total of 171 Primary 4 students

participated in this activity where they were

expected to complete the course on their own.

Throughout the course (of 26 obstacles), the

students experienced excitement, anxiety, fear

and eventually, a sense of accomplishment.

After completing the obstacle course, most of the students learnt that by stepping outside of their comfort

zone, they will be able to overcome new challenges and gain more confidence.

Students also exhibited a greater ability to show empathy and understanding of others; especially so when

they had completed the course but some of their peers were still struggling at an obstacle. Many of the

students came forward to encourage their peers, assured them and some even gave tips on how to overcome

the obstacles!

Through this experiential learning, the students were able to apply their socio-emotional skills in a real-life

context and it was extremely heartening to all the teachers who witnessed their growth.

Student Leaders Investiture 2019

A proud moment for our student leaders as the whole school gathered in the hall on 2 April to witness the

investiture ceremony of the various student leadership groups.

The ceremony was led by our very own Head Prefect, Hazeldine Carol Rose and Vice-Head Prefects, Rebecca

Kui and Kim Yina. This ceremony recognises the contributions and services given by the various student

leadership groups to our school.

Together with the prefects, the student leaders will continue to serve the school with pride and inspire

new batches of students to contribute to our school and community.

CWA Media Literacy Workshop

On 5 April, our Cyber Wellness Ambassadors (CWAS) attended a Media Literacy Workshop conducted by

National Library Board to learn about the increasing trends of fake news online.

In the workshop, our CWAs learnt the essential skills needed to identify fake news. They also learnt the

difference between real news and fake news. Our CWAs were then put to the test with various pictures

and websites. With new knowledge and skills, our CWAs are able to use search engines online more

effectively.

English Language Week 2019

The English Department held its English Language Week (EL Week) from 25 March to 29 March. EL week

aims to provide varied platforms and opportunities for students to develop a love for the language.

The theme this year is ‘Reading Opens the Window to the World’ for Upper Primary levels while the theme

for Lower Primary levels is ‘Superheroes Read’.

The week started with a reading survey and ended with book recommendations and book sharing activities.

Students from all levels were first given a list of recommended books – books that can be borrowed from

the school or national library. Students were encouraged by their teachers to read at least one of these

books and complete a book review or book sharing after they have read the book.

The department hopes that this will further encourage our students to pick up reading as a lifelong habit.

Primary 5 – book promotion and book sharing.

Primary 3 – readers’ theatre and book sharing. Primary 2 – book jackets.

International Friendship Day 2019

Our School commemorated International Friendship Day (IFD) during the week from 8 April (Monday) to

12 April (Friday). The theme for IFD 2019 is "Connected Communities". Globalisation provides us with the

opportunity to appreciate and live together with friends with different traditions, languages, cultures and

histories. It is important to encourage our youth to actively deepen the connection with our neighbours by

empowering them in this process of celebrating our vibrancy and building our community.

This time round, our school collaborated with HDB’s Outreach to Young and Youth! (OHYAY) Roadshow.

Together, we seek to engage students in building community bonds in the heartland areas through lively

assembly talk, multimedia shows and interactive games.

The assembly talk was conducted by HDB.

The content focused on conveying

messages of good neighbourliness and

eco-friendly living. These messages were

told in the form a story of the Little

Heartland Beanies, a group of 5 aliens

who came down to Earth to teach

residents how to be good and eco-

friendly neighbours.

Five stations were set up during recesses

to engage students on how to be a

friendly and responsible neighbour, and

tips on leading an eco-conscious lifestyle

at home. The five stations were Digital

Games station, Spin the Wheel, Art &

Craft Station, Board Games & Puzzles

and Exhibition Panels.

P4 Social Studies Field-based Learning to the Singapore River

As part of the Social Studies curriculum, our P4 students went

for a learning trail along the Singapore River on 28 March 2019.

This Field-based Learning (FbL) ties in nicely with Singapore’s

Bicentennial - the 200th anniversary of Raffles establishing

Singapore as a free port. Through a guided tour, the students

learnt about the importance of the Singapore River and the

contributions made by our pioneers to the development of

Singapore.

During the FbL, the students were entranced by the stories of

old Singapore told by the guides. The students enjoyed

themselves immensely as they interacted with their guides to

learn more about Singapore’s rich history, heritage and culture.

statue of Raffles by the Singapore

River.

Students were able to pick up the good

habits of high-rise and eco-friendly

living through exciting and interactive

digital games.

In the Art & Craft Station, students

learnt about upcycling using unwanted

denim material for art & craft work.

With the mission to build a zero-waste community, the P5 students went through a sustainable upcycling

workshop to better understand upcycling and its possibilities. They reflected on the amount of daily

wastage and were made to rethink the ways we could creatively reuse and redesign disused products.

Students were shocked to find out that old clothes are one of the top contributors of textile waste, of

which, about 95% of the textile that are dumped into landfills could actually be recycled! Armed with that

new-found awareness, the students learnt to reuse textiles to make upcycled pallet textile thread art via

upcycled techniques to produce designs based on our school’s 6 core values.

To reduce fabric waste in our school, a collection drive of old or unwanted cotton t-shirts was carried out

in Term 2. It was a good opportunity for students and staff to play their part in giving new life to the

fabrics, saving them from ending up in a landfill or incineration plant.

P5 VIA Activity – Sustainable Upcycling Workshop

Students were guided on how to handle the

nails and hammer to create the outline of

the artwork.

After much observation, students had a

hands-on in the nailing process.

Students were proud to present their

final artwork which they worked

collaboratively to create the pieces.
