Good Shape 5To tlie Stockholders of the K 0 Bnriev Tobacco Growers Co Before coins into details on wha has been don I deem it proper to correct an erroneous Impression that a fow stockholders teem to have and that is that we guaranteed that if we did not get the tobacco Binned np we would give them back their money Such a proposition was never thought of or talked over to my knowledge It doubt le < s grew out of the statement made in reference to the organization which was and so stated on the subscription list Bleneil that if we secured the amount stated hamely 5250000 in subscription and 10 per cent paid into bank we would organize if not and we tailed tc organize the company that the trusteet of the several funds would hand back the money paid in This was a proposition pure and sim ¬ pie as to the organization of the cot pany We dill organize the company and the money was remitted to the treasurer in accordance with the plans organization As soon as we orga ized and elected officers and went wcrk that ended that proposition b no one ever suggested a guarantee th the growers would sign up their tobacco such a guarantee as that would be it ¬ possible for any one to make and would not be a sound business proposition but those parties who subscribed and paid their 10 per cent are the rtockholdeis of this company and our books and r cords are open at all times for their I n ¬ spection Our stockholders and the growers a re- in a general way well informed of the fact that we began the organization tills Cfmpnny about the first of Amigo and the work was closely followed up by holding meetings in which the plans previously adopted by the meeting of delegates at exiugton were fully ex- plained and the benefits of the organi ¬ zation were thoroughly dwelt upon On the 27th of September the compar was incorporated organized anti equi ped with its officers for business Im- mediately ¬ thereafter using the nam esout and addresses that the old Ompany had secured in 1901 we began the work of explaining the purposes of our organ tion allover again direct to the grow er by mail To do this we han to have large force of clerical help immediately The canvass was taken up and the entire hurley district fortyfour con nB ties and in addition some outside con I ties were thoroughly canvassed takir the name posiofflce address and esi i rusted pounds of tobacco for 1904 and 1905 As fast as we secured these names and addresses we sent them cir- cular letters explaining what contract A was the necessity of signing a theobacco in order to make the entht enterprise a success This year a labor in the country taking statistics was paid for by us this enabled us toI have it done thoroughly In the mean time we perfected organization in each county and when the time arrived ti first of November to send out contra A we were enabled to reach evenI grower in the entire burley district which means 44 counties requiring about 42000 names and addresses to I IeC written contracts to be mailed inclnd jug return envelopes printed and the letter also enclosed urging ujjpn the grower the absolute necessity of imme- diately signing and returning the same Procuring the necessary facilities to do this cost us considerable money be sides the labor and material the teen was that we perfected to a remarkably successful degree our organization tit country We had from forty to fifty good substantial men acting as chair ¬ J men or managers in each county who proved by their labors that they were sincere and earnest in their work and with few exceptions labored tlivouses on tJd the company 1 or lack of anyugflig the company could do The growers received our proposiM tori in the form of contract hey declined to accept or sign conse- quently we failed to get anything like the required amount of tobacco This ot course was the undeniable privilege of the grower arid It is no part of our duty to criticise his judgment Time and circumstances will develop whether it was good or bad but it must not be stated or assumed by any one that the Kentucky and Ohio Hurley Tobacco Growers Company is a failure so far as C its organization and work is concerned because the growers aid not accept the proposition made to them by the corn atiy The organization still remains is in good shape has no liabilities and can be used by its stockholders to rert der any aid and comfort or benefits tow the grower that the good judgment o its stockholders and Board of Directors wi forward business proposition trom the company to the grower to purchase his tobacco The 5To tlie Stockholders of the K 0Bnriev Tobacco Growers Co

Before coins into details on wha hasbeen don I deem it proper to correctan erroneous Impression that a fowstockholders teem to have and that is

that we guaranteed that if we did notget the tobacco Binned np we would

give them back their money Such aproposition was never thought of ortalked over to my knowledge It doubtle < s grew out of the statement made inreference to the organization which wasand so stated on the subscription listBleneil that if we secured the amountstated hamely 5250000 in subscriptionand 10 per cent paid into bank wewould organize if not and we tailed tcorganize the company that the trusteetof the several funds would hand backthe money paid in

This was a proposition pure and sim ¬

pie as to the organization of the cotpany We dill organize the companyand the money was remitted to thetreasurer in accordance with the plansorganization As soon as we orgaized and elected officers and wentwcrk that ended that proposition bno one ever suggested a guarantee ththe growers would sign up their tobaccosuch a guarantee as that would be it ¬

possible for any one to make and wouldnot be a sound business proposition butthose parties who subscribed and paidtheir 10 per cent are the rtockholdeisof this company and our books and rcords are open at all times for their I n¬

spectionOur stockholders and the growers a re-

in a general way well informed of thefact that we began the organizationtills Cfmpnny about the first of Amigo

and the work was closely followed upby holding meetings in which the plans

previously adopted by the meeting ofdelegates at exiugton were fully ex-

plained and the benefits of the organi ¬

zation were thoroughly dwelt uponOn the 27th of September the comparwas incorporated organized anti equiped with its officers for business Im-mediately

¬

thereafter using the namesoutand addresses that the old Ompany hadsecured in 1901 we began the work ofexplaining the purposes of our organtion allover again direct to the grow erby mail To do this we han to havelarge force of clerical help immediately

The canvass was taken up and theentire hurley district fortyfour con nBties and in addition some outside con Ities were thoroughly canvassed takirthe name posiofflce address and esi irusted pounds of tobacco for 1904 and1905 As fast as we secured thesenames and addresses we sent them cir-

cular letters explaining what contractA was the necessity of signing a

theobacco in order to make the enthtenterprise a success This year alabor in the country taking statisticswas paid for by us this enabled us toIhave it done thoroughly In the meantime we perfected organization in eachcounty and when the time arrived tifirst of November to send out contra

A we were enabled to reach evenIgrower in the entire burley districtwhich means 44 counties requiringabout 42000 names and addresses to I IeCwritten contracts to be mailed inclndjug return envelopes printed and theletter also enclosed urging ujjpn thegrower the absolute necessity of imme-diately signing and returning the same

Procuring the necessary facilities todo this cost us considerable money besides the labor and material the teenwas that we perfected to a remarkablysuccessful degree our organization titcountry We had from forty to fiftygood substantial men acting as chair¬ Jmen or managers in each county whoproved by their labors that they weresincere and earnest in their work andwith few exceptions labored untiringlyIJfactof organizition was successfully attained

it received the untiring and enerntic support ofpJte omeers of flu 0tiiGflnarkvSLicks that wilt hold from 17 to OIiCseculdit was tlivouses on tJd the company 1

or lack of anyugflig the company coulddo The growers received our proposiMtori in the form of contracthey declined to accept or sign conse-

quently we failed to get anything likethe required amount of tobacco Thisot course was the undeniable privilegeof the grower arid It is no part of ourduty to criticise his judgment Timeand circumstances will develop whetherit was good or bad but it must not bestated or assumed by any one that theKentucky and Ohio Hurley TobaccoGrowers Company is a failure so far as Cits organization and work is concernedbecause the growers aid not accept theproposition made to them by the corn

atiy The organization still remainsis in good shape has no liabilities andcan be used by its stockholders to rertder any aid and comfort or benefits towthe grower that the good judgment oits stockholders and Board of Directorswiforward business proposition trom thecompany to the grower to purchase histobacco The grower declined the offerThat incident is closed but the comCanliutBoard of Directors may see proper orthat may appeal totheir beM judgment <
